Can I just say I love this place? I do! I moved to Pittsburgh 4 months ago, and I'm so glad we found this within the first week of moving. I immediately took a liking to the duck (seasonal meal). Now, getting duck can always be hit or miss. If not finde right, duck can be dry and gamey. But at Slate I was never disappointed! Every time I've had thr duck it has been superb. I know, I know, I should expand my horizons and try a new meal. But why order something different when I've a boyfriend to do it and who is willing to share?! We've tried the shrimp, gnocchi, steak, and you really can't go wrong with the many options. Be willing to BYOB if you want an adult beverage. Also, get the pumpkin cheesecake (seasonal); I'm not keen on dessert but this one was worth it.

I'm from out of town and stumbled across this surprise of a restaurant. The food and service were great. Pleasantly surprised indeed. Had to have been the most tender and juiciest pork chops I've ever had.

Great food with a monthly changing menu. Always a mix of old favorites with new ideas. Worth a visit every time.

Me and Grandparents have gone here a few times the past year and it's always consistent with a new menu each time. The meals here are made from scratch and you can tell the chefs put a lot of passion into their cooking. The pricing is very reasonable and its a nice quiet atmosphere.

Excellent 👍 service and helpful, good salad with I believe white Russian dressing--very tasty. My wife's chicken was excellent and my veal was excellent also, very thin and tender. Desert was very rich and tons of flavor, with some coffee flavor I think, was great. Plenty of food to take home 😀

One of the best consistent fine dining restaurants in Pittsburgh. The staff is fantastic, attentive but not overbearing. The food is creative but always hits the senses just right. Always fresh. My only complaint is the difficulty choosing what to order. Steak, poultry, seafood...I've enjoyed each and savor every bite. And the new location is beautiful!

The atmosphere is relaxed and semi-casual but the menu is very formal. The choices were all gourmet quality that wouldn’t be found on any menu in this area. I have adventurous taste. EVERYTHING on the menu looked absolutely awesome so I took the road less traveled and asked for the chef to make me his favorite. I was extremely impressed. Presentation, flavor, seasoning and temperature were all perfect. The price is not out of line for the quality meal served . This is our “Special occasion” restaurant. We try to have special occasions often.

Went for drinks around 5:30. The staff was friendly and the the drinks were tasty. We ordered an app and it was delish. we were definitely the youngest couple (30's) there and several people came in for dinner while we were still there. I think we will def try for dinner some time. Fun little gem in the South Hills

Slate Bistro was a wonderful surprise. My boyfriend and I picked it on a whim - luckily we were able to be sat without a reservation. Dinner reservations are definitely recommended! The staff was all very lovely, and the uniquely crafted menu items are super tasty. They make all of their food (including the desserts!) in-house. We will definitely be returning.

Eli was going to seat us upstairs until he saw my walking cast & quickly adjusted to the 1st floor. All of the specials sounded wonderful. Was hard to choose from them & the great menu. We both went for salmon. Mine was the special with lump crab in a creamy lemon sauce. Melted in my mouth! Will definitely be back here next time we come to Pittsburgh.

I had the pleasure of dining here on with my fiancé this past weekend. We showed up early, on a whim, and without a reservation. We were lucky to have the chance to dine. Upon entry we were greeted happily by a few of the waitstaff and promptly taken to our seats. The layout of the resturant is cozy, private, and pleasently inviting. It has the bones of an old home...because it is one! The menu is small but from what I understand changes every month to give the chef/owners a chance to show their true passion for innovative culinary pieces of art. Having a small menu is a good thing in my opinion, it allows for more focus on the dishes offered resulting in a stellar experience. We were served by Elias Kean, a gentleman, and a true wealth of knowledge concerning this establishment. He was there every step of the way providing excellent service and advice as we worked our way through our courses. We started with the brusketta, unfortunatly my fiancé ordered this so I didn't exactly get to read the menu description of it, but I was impressed by their non-traditional take on a classic small plate starter. The addition of crispy prosciutto was a wonderful surprise that added a great depth to the dish. We then moved on to our salads. I had the grilled romane salad. It was served with large black olives, sundried tomatoes, and a pinenut vinigarette. (I even cleaned my plate with a fresh roll to get the last couple drops of the vinigarette) unfortunatly once again, my mistake, but I was too entranced by my salad to pay attention to what my better half was having. She said it was "tasty" excuse her lack of detail, she is a foodie in training. For my entrée I had the shrimp gnocchi. For those who have never tried a gnocchi before i highly recommend using this as a reference point while judging others. The gnocchi themselves were light and fluffy which went perfectly with the tomato creme sauce. I cannot stand when im given a heavy sauce with a heavy gnocchi. The shrimp were cooked PERFECTLY. I find it rare anymore to find a chef who knows how to cook a shrimp, and serve it in a hot dish without any of the shrimp being overcooked even the slightest. The addition of shitake mushrooms and artichoke hearts added a much needed texture gradient that you dont commonly see in a gnocchi dish. My lady had the pork chop served witb roasted potatoes and broccoli. It disappeared before I had the chance to analyze so I can only assume that it was delicious. Now this next sentence is key. Save room for dessert. We shared both the "burgers and fries" and a banana bread dessert and thought we didn't have room left to fit it in our bellys, but when things like this come along, you make room. The burgers and fries were an adorable take on an american classic. A hot brownie topped with fresh whipped cream served inbetween two warm white cakes, paired with a side of funnel cake fries and rasberry dipping sauce. They even served it in your traditional burger shop basket. The cakes were moist and flavourful and the raspberry sauce was anything but store bought. You can tell there was a real passion that went into that dessert. The banana nut bread was just as good if not better. The bread had a great banana flavour, just enough so you know its banana but not too much to overpower the other elements. It was served with a caramel drizzle and homemade vanilla ice cream. Absolutely fantastic. Overall our experience was top notch and I highly recommend giving this place a shot. I will for a fact be returning, but not until next month. I can't wait to see whats to come in the future.

We ate there on Saturday. Nice atmosphere and our server Elias was very nice and knowledgable. I was a little put off by all the mushrooms! They were on every dish! Even the side dish of the evening was mushrooms piccata. I had the tuna special and was disappointed. It was an odd cut and tasted fishy with not much flavor. I'm used to eating it with wasabi and ginger, and their prep was a hoisin sauce with, you guessed it, mushrooms. My wife seemed to like her dish, as did our friend. Deserts were good, but they haven't perfected their espresso. It was flat without crema and tasted nothing like espresso. We will give it another chance and I'll try some different items.

Lunch. This was our second time for lunch & it was excellent. This time we had the specials & they were excellent. The portions are perfect for lunch. Service was good & fast. Plan to come back for dinner.

Nice & Fresh & Local Sourced. Had a good time and good dinner. First time at Slate. They have a little enclosed porch for private dining for 2, that looked so cool! We were more than 2 so not able to get that spot.
I had a special salad of the night that had apples, golden raisins and cranberries mixed with greens. Very tasty and fresh. For diner I chose the Crab Cakes. It came with a creamy dijon sauce, leeks and peppers. This dish was very good. For a side I had the fresh and tasty veggies.
Service was friendly and efficient.

You can tell it's owned by chefs. I simply love this place: the cozy warm feel of it, the fabulous food with new goodies monthly, the waiter Eli who takes care of you, makes you feel welcome, but doesn't hover unnecessarily. The whole experience is great and their Slate Plate, M-Th 5-6P can't be beat. I've eaten there for lunch and dinner and have always left wishing I could live there; or at least eat all my meals there.

What a meal!. The restaurant feels like home. The menu Is varied and the meal we had was excellent. Everything was made to order and the ingredients tasted fresh . The server was attentive and friendly. Leave room for dessert. There are many and I wish I could have had a taste of them all. If you want great food I recommend you try this restaurant. Great food -- Great service. We were a party of six, four of whom were from out of town and wanting to avoid a chain-type restaurant. We tried Slate and could not have been treated better. Our server, Dee, was very friendly and helpful with suggestions from the menu. The food (we mostly ordered seafood) was fantastic.

Or guests were very pleased with our choice of Slate.

Great food and atmosphere!!. We ate here for he first time a couple weeks back. Everything from the appetizers to the desserts were delicious. You can tell that a lot of thought goes into the preparation of the menu. I think the menu changes frequently so we look forward to going back to see what's new. I enjoy that much more than looking at the same menu time after time. Service was terrific. A nice intimate atmosphere and the servers seemed to have a real team spirit.
We will be back.

-----28 May, 2014-----

Great food and atmosphere. SPECTACULAR & DELICIOUS!. My girlfriend and I went to Slate for lunch on 3/21/14 and had the BEST food ever! This was my 2nd time here and I couldn't wait to share this 'secret bistro' with a friend. We were not disappointed....the food was amazing! We each got the Salmon Salad that was so delicious we barely needed to use any of the incredible balsamic dressing. The chef surprised us with a free tasting of their roasted brussel sprouts drizzled with a warm honey mustard and it knocked our socks off. Disregard any negative reviews on Slate, go and give it a try. I promise you won't be disappointed! SO DELICIOUS!

Bad service. We had a reservation for 12 people. We were seated right away. No one came to our table for 1 hour,no menus or drink orders or water.
As an owner of a small restaurant if your waitress is overwhelmed send someone else to table...A hostess can give out menus.
Food was ok,overpriced ,took. Way too long.you need to give better service if you want to charge $25 an entree

Spectacular Local Gem. My boyfriend and I have dined at Slate many times, and it is always a great experience. The service is always prompt and friendly. Everything on the menu is delicious. You just can't go wrong!

Slightly off but promising. Slate has been around for a couple of years and it appears that they are still trying to find their footing. One of the things that I like about them is that they feature a monthly menu so the food is geared to the season and therefore would benefit from what's fresh and available and any given time of year. I have not been there since the change from Cafe Georgio so when the opportunity came up to have a meal there, my family and I jumped at the chance.

We stopped by on a Wednesday evening in the midst of shopping season and were surprised that the restaurant was almost completely empty. Visually, it has not changed much from the previous incarnation although some changes were apparent. For instance, the previous owner had her paintings up on all the walls for sale and these were removed. Being an old home, it was probably not possible to make too many changes to the structure so the layout is the same as it was. We were seated promptly and since there was practically no one else there, we were immediately provided the menus and had top-notch service. Personally, I think the wait staff was bored and was happy to have something to do, which was our luck!

Slate features a monthly menu and although short, it has enough variety that almost anyone can find something to order and try. In our case we tried the Pumpkin Ravioli, the Pumpkin Risotto, the featured Salmon, and a featured Steak. We also ordered the Brussels Sprouts Salad and had the side dishes that were offered that night including the seasoned rice and veggies. Since we shared everything amongst ourselves, we were able to try practically every side dish.

While the dishes are imaginative, the execution was slightly off. For instance, the Brussels Sprouts salad has roasted sprouts with slivers of bacon or pancetta. This was served cold. Even with the vinegar-based salad dressing this dish would have sparkled as a warm dish, but as a cold dish it left a lot to be desired. Similarly with the Pumpkin Ravioli. The waitress gushed over the fact that they get them from Fedde Pasta but the way the restaurant put it together with the cream sauce came out too sweet to be enjoyable.

We also had a fun experience with the Pumpkin Risotto. When we ate it, we noted there was some sort of additional protein in it which we were speculating at. We were very sure that there were chicken pieces in it, but while we were speaking about this, the manager walked by and stated that those were sea scallops. Now, unfortunately, one of our party has severe seafood allergies and this was a matter of some concern, until our waitress came by, overheard the discussion, and stated that it was indeed chicken in the dish. The scallops are in a different version of that dish that is sometimes served. However, it was only at this time that we learned that we could have ordered the dish without any chicken in it. That would have been our preference as the addition of the chicken did nothing except add some lumps to an otherwise fine dish.

We will definitely try Slate again in the future as there is definite promise with what they are doing and maybe it was just an off-night for the kitchen staff when we visited.

Fantastic !. We absolutely love this place. The place feels like 'home', the service is great, and the food - every plate is a masterpiece filled with flavor perfection! This is the place to go for that special treat!

Very Good Experience. Yesterday my friend and I had a very nice lunch at Slate Bistro. The food was nicely served and delicious. I had the chicken dish and my friend had the pumpkin bisque and Waldorf salad. We both enjoyed the "mini" desserts--caramel cheesecake--just enough of a taste without the calories!

We were under the impression that Slate was open only in the evenings and discovered that lunch is served there on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. It was a perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy ourselves.

1st Thursday group 11/7/13. We are a group of women who meet for dinner on the first Thursday of the month. November's selection was the Slate Bistro and it was fantastic. We ordered appetizers, salads, entrees, and desserts and everything was delicious. One person ordered the risotto with seafood and was a little disappointed, but all other meals were fantastic. I would definitely return to Slate and have already recommended it to others.

Mediocre food for the price. Service was attentive and cheerful but the food was just mediocre. When it was time for coffee and dessert there was a intense bad smell that drove us to wrap up and leave quickly.

Salads (killer tomatoes and house salad) was OK. Salmon dish looked very appealing but was bland. Halibut was OK.
Smores brownie was lacking ice cream.

A place to discover. My son got married this week-end and we hosted the rehearsal dinner at The Slate. Setting was warm and intimate, and food amazing!! Our guests had a choice of Mediterranean chicken, New York Strip steak, or sea bass served with creamy polenta and ratatouille. The fish was cooked to perfection, the steak melted in the mouth and the chicken was delicious and tasty. For dessert, I had the cream puffs (profiterolles), and my husband the crème brulee: both fantastic. According to our guests ( many of them came from France for the wedding), that has been the best rehearsal dinner they have attended so far. I highly recommend the place, give it a try, you will not be disappointed. Thanks to the owners, Dave and Cheryl, for making this night memorable.

Get to Slate!. My daughter, a friend and I finally made our way to Slate Bistro last evening for dinner. It was very good, and we're all glad that we went. We started our meal with the soup of the day, which was a creamy asparagus soup. Fantastic flavor! It was soo good, that we asked our waitress if there was a "ton of cream and butter" in it. She responded that she didn't know, but probably, because anything that good would have to have a ton of bad stuff in it. (Hmmm??? Shouldn't the response be, "I'm not sure, but I can find out for you.")

On to our entres -- we chose 3 different seafood dishes: the salmon cake special, the tiger shrimp (on the April menu) and the scallops (on the April menu). The salmon cakes were terrific. Two LARGE cakes were served with a butter chive sauce. It looked a lot like the sauce you see in the pictures above for the crab cakes. The salmon cakes themselves were not chunks of salmon, but had a more consistent density. I think they must have whipped the salmon in the food processor to make it almost mouse-like.

The scallop entre was also a huge portion. I think there must have been 10 sea scallops on the plate. They were served with prosciutto and asparagus, sort-of arranged in a pile in the middle of the plate. Pretty presentation. The scallops were done perfectly.

The Tiger Shrimp were also good, although my friend thought she was going to get giant prawns with the entre. They looked like regular large size shrimp. She really liked the Thai sauce that was poured on top of the shrimp and rice. As a side, she choose risotto. She liked it, but told me "Your's is better," a very nice compliment to MY cooking.

The salmon cakes and scallops were served with steamed broccoli and cauliflower as the veggie and the starch was what our waitress told us was "risotto." When I took my first bite out of the "risotto" I said, "This is polenta, not risotto." That was fine with me, because I like them both, but when the waitress came back to see if all was OK, and I told her that it wasn't risotto, but polenta -- albeit made with white corn meal, rather than the traditional yellow -- she insisted that it was risotto. We kind-of went back and forth a bit about it in a kidding way. It wasn't until after our meal, when she cleared the plates, that she decided to ask the chef what was served with the crab cakes and scallops. The chef told her then that it was polenta. I'm not sure how many guests she had told the wrong thing. We were the only table seated at 7:30.

Now, none of this took away from the meal for us, beause we are nice, friendly people, and we like to joke around. However, I can see how some folks may be put off by her seeming disinterest in the food that she was serving to us. I think that the owners, Dave and Cheryl, need to make sure that the waitstaff is well informed about the menu, including the ingredients in the dishes. Maybe our waitress was having on "off" day, but when the food is good (as is the case at Slate), the staff should be knowledgeable about it, and should present it to the guests in an enthusiastic manner. OK, 'nuff said. BOTTOM LINE: We'll be back.

George would be so disappointed. Unseasoned cauliflower and a baked potato as the sides? Um, no. A far cry from the beautiful dishes they used to serve. They refired my fiancees steak twice. while it was cut. So, three times this steak got cooked. Even the waitress was embarassed. No apology, no comp. dreadful, oversauced chicken swimming in butter. Disgusting.

Absolutely excellent. You can't go wrong with this place.

What a disappointment.. I had high hopes for this restaurant given the chef's provenance and the previous reviews. But it failed to deliver.

The Thai Shrimp had a nice spicy sauce and a decent, denser than tempura coating.

But here is what bothered me. The shrimp was cooked perfectly as was the walleye pike and the veal scallopini. But the flavoring just wasn't there. All the right ingredients were there without the appropriate seasoning.

With salt from the table, the food was passably good, but this should have been handled by the kitchen.

This is one of the best restaurants I've ever been too! The food was amazing and the service was friendly and welcoming- I recommend this restaurant highly- We will be coming back soon

Great Food. My husband and I stop in on a Thursday evening. The food was excellent and the staff was most enjoyable. We are looking forward to our next visit.

Disappointing over-ambitious food, servers too casual. This restaurant took the (physical) place of the previous Cafe Georgio on Donati Road near McDonald's.

We decided last minute to go there when we discovered Cafe Georgio was no longer there for our wedding anniversary.

The Risotto with Scallops was alright, but the rice was definitely not rich and creamy as it should be. The rice was definitely undercooked and not al dente. Absolutely no seasoning (salt, pepper) was present in the dish, minus whole peppercorns which is not a replacement for seasoning.

They were completely sold out of the special Filet Mignon (offered at $32) at 8pm on a Friday night. Sounds like they didn't order enough. If they were out at 10pm, I'd say ok, but there's not much sense in having a special that can't be ordered. We ordered strip steaks instead, also at $32. Despite potential size differences, it still feels like I'm getting ripped off by paying filet prices and getting a strip steak. These were at best Choice steaks. They might have been Select.

The steaks, both ordered medium, came out with one being medium rare, and the other being closer to medium well. Once again, the steaks were horribly unseasoned, and again, the whole peppercorns (what is it with the peppercorns?) don't count.

The servers were way too diner-friendly, "hey hon, what can I getcha'?" type service. While they were friendly, you can't deliver the same type of service at Al's Cafe that you do at Ruth's Chris. Figure out which side you want to be on, and remember that your prices play a role here too.

This place needs to deliver much higher quality food and deliver much better service if they expect to charge north of $100+ for dinner.
Peterspete
Avoid. If you think you're going to the old Georgios....think again. Inattentive staff. The food is below par. Lot's of other places to spend your money. My wife ordered what she thought was a healthy chicken dish and and it came out swimming in some sort of white sauce. Inedible. I ordered a veal chop and they completely ruined it by drowning it in some sort of tomato sauce.

Close but no cigar. My husband and I went to Slate for a Friday night dinner. They haven't really changed the decor from Cafe Georgio (the former incarnation) and unfortunately you still have to deal with the pretentious nouveau riche seated everywhere around you...that didn't change either.

Our server Bailey was friendly, attentive and knowledgable about the menu (similar to Georgio's but a little less classy) and the arugula salad was quite good. The risotto was a little soupy but quite tasty and the gemelli pasta entree was good.

However, we made the mistake of eavesdropping on Bailey going into raptures over the Bananas Foster cake at the table next to us (at which table, the female party sat there with her shoes off, exposing hooves that last had a pedicure when Nixon was in office, taking calls on her cell phone while cleaning her teeth with her fingernails) and were served a sawdust cake with stale frosting and faux whipped cream.

Bottom line: Try to get yourself seated as far away from other patrons as possible at Slate and DON'T ORDER DESSERT!

Family B-day dinner. We wanted to take our 6 and 8 year old kids out to their first 'fancy' dinner and thought we would try Slate. We went early in case things didn't 'work' out, but it was lovely! And they were totally accommodating. While they do not have a 'kids menu' they made us exactly what our kids needed--from spaghetti with butter and cheese to spaghetti with marinara (which is not even on the menu). They even made them a basic tossed salad--again, not on the menu and all for a totally reasonable price. Our dinners were very nice as well--started with the Oyster stew (very spicy but good!) and the Caesar salad, then on to the salmon with rock shrimp for me and the steak with Boursin cheese. Both very lovely. Overall a great experience...one we would do again.

Very, Very Good. My husband and I went to Slate Bistro last night and had a wonderful meal. The service was diligent and friendly, and the restaurant has a nice, relaxing atmosphere. While the menu is not extensive, they do offer daily specials, and I had a hard time deciding what to order. The menu changes on a monthly basis. They have retained many of the employees from Georgio's.

My husband and I decided to split the Caeser salad and spaghetti with the stuffed meatball, and were delighted with our choices. The salad was not overdressed, as was suggested in an earlier review, and the pasta was perfectly cooked and in a delicious sauce that was a delightful change from traditional red sauce. The stuffed meatball was excellent as well.

I sugggest you form your own opinion and give it a try. I know we will be back!

So so. The entrees were delicious. We had the gnocci & crab cakes. The killer tomato salad was very good too. The sides were below average & the serive was below average. The desserts were just OK & pricey.

What a great new place in the South Hills. Had dinner with my family and was treated like family by the staff. Great food and friendly service made our dinner exceptional! We will be regulars!

Great Place. My husband and I decided to try the new restaurant Slate for date night and could have not picked a better place. We loved the atmosphere, service and especially the food. Stuffed pepper appettizer was to die for. We shared the Killer Tomato Salad and fought for the last bite. The fresh fish and seafood bowl were excellent. We ended the meal with the Keylime Cheesecake. Great choice!! We will definitely be going back as soon as we get the chance.

Not impressed - very disappointed. My husband and I were excited to try Slate Bistro in Bethel Park. We went in with an open mind wanting to find our new "go to" place but left very, very disappointed. Our food was terrible! We ordered the Slate salad which was coated in dressing and did not taste very fresh, as if it was sitting in the dressing in the back. Then we got the meals - I had the crab cakes and my husband the seafood bowl. The crab cakes had to be the worst I have ever had (and I love crab cakes). They tasted like two slices of bread with some crab meat tossed in. I didn't even enjoy the sides that came with my meal. The seafood bowl my husband had was extremely bland in a soupy tasteless liquid and the shrimp and scallops were slightly overcooked. We just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.

AWESOME!!. I took my wife out to dinner to Slate Bistro opening night and it was FABULOUS!! The service was outstanding and the food was grrrreat! I had the gnocchi which I highly recommend. My wife and I had the killer tomato for an appetizer which was delicious. I honestly cannot remember what my wife had for her entre as I was inhaling mine. I am not a big desert eater and don't care much for lime, however my wife loves desert and ordered the key LIME cheesecake and only had a bite because I ate it all! Everyone there is very friendly and the atmosphere is perfect. The prices are very reasonable, the portions are big, and the quality of food is perfect. While we were there one of the chefs stopped by our table to welcome us and to see that our food was prepared to our satisfaction. If your looking for great food and a great dining experience then Slate Bistro is the place for you!! My wife and I can't wait to go back!

Slate hit the mark!. Outstanding! My husband and I ceased our conversation and began humming like little kids as we savored every bit of our entree's-I don't think that has ever happened before. I had the Arborio Risotto and my husband the gnocchi. I had no idea gnocchi existed that was fluffy and creamy. Amazing!
Our server was a sweetie pie! So attentive and knowledgeable. Great atmosphere.
Can't wait to go back! These owners know their stuff!

I heard about this place from a friend so I decided to check it out. I knew it was previously Cafe Georgio and I had a pleasant experience there once so I figured I would give Slate a try. All I can say is I'm glad I did. It was a great atmosphere and the service was excellent. Our waitress was incredibly helpful and friendly throughout the entire meal. Oh and don't even get me started on the meal. Hands down one of the best meals I've ever had. The food was delicious and prepared just right. I have to admit that there are things I don't like, such as tomatoes, but I tried my friends killer tomato salad and I just couldnt stop eating it! The chefs did a really great job and I can't wait to come back again.

Very Good. Excellent for the first weekend open. We were a little tentative to try first weekend open, but the food was very good and the servers were the same as Cafe Georgio which was great to see. Sea Bass was prepared perfectly and my spouse enjoyed the Veal Chop.
