Review Big Dog Coffee - Pittsburgh

Nathan Masucci
Cozy spot for a decent cup of coffee. I was really impressed with the comfort and the seating. It was a perfect spot to have a good conversation with a friend. The yogurt bar was also a nice plus. Although rather expensive, $8 for a yogurt bowl, you could pick any toppings you want, and all toppings were fresh. If I lived in the area, I would likely frequent more often, most likely do work there with the comfort and the ample space.

This has to be one of the most consistent shops in Pittsburgh when it comes to espresso drinks. I’ve been visiting Big Dog for years now and it’s always a great experience with tasty espresso. Outdoor seating is one of my favorites along with the gas-lit fireplace in the fall/winter. One of the coziest shops on the South Side.

Such a cute cafe!! Love that there is outside seating. Went one early morning, and had a nice cappuccino and oatmeal combo. Their oatmeal bag is so neat and customizable. Lots of options and the pastries were also very good. The pb cookie was soft and had a nice nuttiness too it. The people working there are also very friendly and give you good recommendations. A nice play to study or just relax.

Big Dog is one of our go to spots for post-run coffees! Those caramel and seasonal lattes are just perfect. The owner is incredibly kind, and the whole vibe with the eclectic decor and artwork is my kind of cozy. Bonus points for letting in cute dogs to pet! Whenever I've got the time, sipping my latte from a mug and soaking in the atmosphere is my little treat. Highly recommend for anyone who loves good coffee and a welcoming vibe.

Nice interior with a spacious layout. The backyard is also a nice place to have a drink if it isn’t too cold or too hot out. Music wasn’t too loud inside, and the latte was solid, pretty large in size too. Good place to spend the day doing work.

Amazing little coffee shop! Plenty of different styles of seating, and a pet friendly patio!! The gentleman made an amazing tea latte, and cute coffee with art! Their food was also amazing! The raspberry turnover is amazing! I'd recommend stopping here!

Best run coffee shop in the city. The owner is present almost every day and the baristas always put out top-notch espresso beverages that are still cheaper than most options in the area. Moving a mile further from Big Dog is one of my biggest regrets in life.

Great coffee and delicious homemade yogurt cup. I tried different coffees here. The Guatemala drip coffee is my favorite. The cappuccino is too mellow for my taste. The baristas are skilled and most of them are so friendly and nice. The place is quaint and cozy. I love it there :)

I first started coming here almost 10 years ago when I was a college student in Pittsburgh and it's still the yard stick to which I measure coffee shops. I just visited the city and I'm so glad to see it still going! The coffee here is why I have a good taste for coffee, the food is great, the seats are cozy, and the wood-burning fireplace is the best place to sit during a cold winter's day in Pittsburgh.

Big Dog was everything I wanted in a coffee shop. The venue was spacious but not so much so that it invited a crowd, and had a mix of appealing artwork indoors and a green and cloistered outdoor patio that should suit many coffeehouse-goers. I had a seasonal daily mix that was served in a generous cup and I felt like it really set me up well to have a fun walk on the trails with my partner. I'd come back another time to take more photos of birds flitting about on the patio since they were really cute!

Are you in search of a welcoming establishment for the enjoyment of exquisite espresso? If so, Big Dog Coffee is the ideal choice. They employ a 58mm portafilter to guarantee the quality of your espresso. I had the pleasure of sampling their croissant, which proved to be not only warm and delightful but also a culinary masterpiece. When I return to Pittsburgh, I shall most certainly make it a point to revisit Big Dog Coffee.

Just had the Big Dog Daily Cold brew and it is DELICIOUS. Very balanced taste, no bitterness and very crisp. The owner also seem to be very engaged with all customers, knew the regular and created a very homely atmosphere.

Came here with a small group of cyclists after a ride. The atmosphere was cozy and quaint. The coffee is served in huge cups and was rich and tasty. I had the pumpkin bread that was moist and delicious. A few people relaxing with their coffees and college students in the back quietly working on their laptops. I like to see very old Pittsburgh buildings and row houses repurposed into useful, productive, pretty neat places. Parking can be challenging as it's on a street requiring permits but one can park elsewhere free and take a little stroll to get there, or cycle to it. It's just a few blocks from REI and Hofbrauhaus, so stop by if you're in the hood.

The baristas are kind and professional, and their French press coffees are always spectacular- pair it with a pastry or some oatmeal and choose a cozy spot to work/study/chat, and you're in for a great experience!

Friendly staff, fun decor, and vast selection of pastries and drinks. The morrocan mint green tea and matcha are my favorites. The patio is lovely and has a vibe that you don’t often experience in Pittsburgh.

All great (service & atmosphere), but regular (Black Cat Classic) espresso not balanced coffee blend - very high acidity. It means roaster master not enough qualification. Arabica blend balancing - it's really art. And of course, a glass of water, along with espresso, is taken from the tap. What's more, it's very clean inside.

Loved the coffee and the atmosphere. Much bigger space than expected. Clean, fast and cozy. Great macchiato....my kids loved the small sections with Children's books. We will definitely be back. Great street parking, cool old building. Nice variety of choices on oatmeal bar. All ppl were there young to old, loved it. Baristas don't really talk, smile,or say thank you,but the coffee was so good I still had to give 5 stars.

Best coffee shop in the world! Charming atmosphere, owners and staff are amazing, coffee and snacks are delicious, and the clientele is always friendly too (always willing to share outlets for computers, keep an eye on your stuff while you go to the bathroom, or hold the patio door for you if you're carrying your coffee outside). Fireplace in the winter keeps it cozy and the outdoor patio is amazing in warm weather! Great spot to do work, read a book or meet friends!

Big Dog is my favorite coffee shop in Pittsburgh. They brew Intelligentsia Coffee however you like but lack the pretentiousness of other third wave shops. The baristas are always friendly and the food is good too. They never make you feel rushed even if there's a line out the door. Come before 9 on a Saturday and you'll be sure to find a table.

Delicious coffee, very friendly staff, and the best dessert I've had in a long time. (Coming from someone who doesn't like sweets.) I'm only in Pennsylvania today and I'm glad I made the choice to come here!

Big Dog Coffee has the best espresso in the world. I used to love Starbucks until I had theirs!

Hands down one of my favorite places for coffee in the city! It's pretty much central coming from all directions so I meet many of my girlfriends here. The atmosphere is relaxed and all their drinks are wonderful- from the chai, to to their lattes to their house coffee.

Love everything about Big Dog...the lattes, the pastries, the staff. All five stars!!!

Big Dog has consistently great pastries and lattes. I don't think I've had a bad drink or pastry from here and I've tried most of their menu. The atmosphere is cozy with tables but also with comfy seats and a fireplace. They also have outdoor seating with flowers near the tables I find myself most productive while I'm here. Free wifi, great music, and plenty of outlets is also a plus. The employees are also friendly. I love Big Dog coffee.

Maybe it's me but I ordered Cafe au Lait and the dude made it with brewed coffee and steamed milk instead with an espresso shot. Just sayin. 👎🏻

Super cute place with good coffee and pastries. Always a good amount of people there to chat and the staff is friendly.
