Review The Twisted Frenchman - Pittsburgh

Dan Oliver
We did the chef's table with wine pairings and it was a great experience. We had 14 courses and wine was paired with all but two or three items. There were some rarer items in the list that brought a special feeling with it. All of the dishes were absolutely excellent and the wine paired well. The presentation of the dishes was also very good. We were not left sitting long between courses and the staff was very attentive and friendly. It is a smaller restaurant and kind of oddly the chef's table was just another table in the main dining area and we were not generally served by the chef which was a little disappointing. Another ding would be that not all the chairs matched, and for a three hour dinner ours were not very comfortable. Given the very high price of the chef's table I think these should be fixed or otherwise noted to guests when getting reservations.

Great experience, excellent service, and delicious food that was inspired and beautifully presented. We had the four course menu, and chose our own cocktails since we aren't wine pairing people. This was perfect for us.

Went with some friends and ordered the 14-course tasting menu with wine pairing, and we were very satisfied. I can't begin to recall every dish served, so I'll speak to the meal overall. At first, I was concerned that the dishes weren't the rich, savory French foods that I'm used to; however, as the meal progressed, a certain logic and planning to the courses became apparent. The initial courses were designed to ease you into the meal, before transitioning into bigger flavors. Obviously, this is how all good tasting menus go, but I'd had a rash of poorly executed tasting menus recently. Anyhow, I digress. Ambiance was comfortable; it was formal, but not stuffy. Service was excellent and on point, and the meal was paced very well. After the meal, we enjoyed some very good cocktails at the bar downstairs. The only negative part of the experience, and I hesitate to mention because it was such a good experience overall, is that the wine pairings were barely adequate. The wines chosen weren't bad in any way, and certainly stood well by themselves, but they lacked a true pairing to the courses. I would expect each wine to compliment and bring out the best and most important elements of the food course, or perhaps conversely to cut through the food course. Instead, with each glass of wine, all I thought was, "Hmm, that's some good wine." Once again, not that it was bad, but could use a little fine-tuning. Bottom line, though, is that you need to go here.

My friend took me here for my Birthday & we did the Chef's tasting menu w/ wine. It was a delightful experience, I'm surprised to find something like this in Pittsburgh! I read recently that they are expanding into something similar to French Laundry which I am elated for, French Laundry is one of my favorite places to dine in California. Edit: I went back to the new location on baum & it was even better then the first time! We did the 8 course tasting menu with the wine pairing which was perfect. The only dish that didn't amaze us was the baby eggplant, I like the smoke effect but overall the dish was a bit bland for my taste. Everything else was delicate & delicious.

Great experience. Went here for a special occasion and were very happy with the service and the food. We did the 4 course menu which gave a nice variety of options including some unique twists on some French favorites.

A gem of cusine. Chic atmosphere. Every dish a layer of textures and flavors each bite different yet complementary. Beautiful presentation. Awaiting a Micheline Star but needing work on cocktails and staff personalization.

Not a great fan of French food, but it was nice and worth the wait!

Food and drinks were expensive but we felt well worth the price. Ambiance was warm and inviting with a great view. Staff was wonderful and I have to add it had the cleanest ladies room I've ever seen. Coming out of the bathroom you get a good look at the pantry and kitchen. They also appeared to be immaculate. We really enjoyed our evening with them.

We did the 18 course chef's table dinner. It was amazing. Our server Claire was great and so knowledgeable on all the dishes served. The kitchen staff was so friendly and professional. You definitely need to bring your appetite. The courses start off light and small but they do get larger and heavier. i enjoyed all of the dishes very much. It was a very unique dining experience that was so enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it. I can't wait to go back and try some dishes from the ala carte menu!

Fine dining at its best. We chose the four course tasting menu and wine pairings. None of our selections were the same, so together we were able to sample one half of the menu. Plating was beautifully done, and we both enjoyed our own and each other's food. Service was on par with the price

We found the service to be exceptional. It would have stood out in any city, but was especially notable in Pittsburgh. The food was also great. All dishes were well executed, though some were not to our taste. The wine offered was outstanding, though some of the pairings were a bit off. All in all, a great experience and we'll return.

I just wanted to leave a good review because I’m afraid the head chef might have heard me make the comment “the worst thing I’ve ever eaten” or something like that. BUT everything was incredible!!! I was referring to the duck because it was my first time trying it and it just wasn’t for me! Other than that it was an incredible valentines meal with my fiancé. Thanks again!!

High end. Really a cool place to visit - greeters are a bit clueless, but waitstaff is very helpful. Small location, which makes it very cozy. Foods do change a lot so you need to visit often to see what the chef has prepared and how unique it really is. This restaurant is also in an older location, which the owner has kept a lot of the flooring as before which adds a nice atmosphere to the place.

Excellent food: visually elegant presentation and delicious. Staff was great: if you don’t like having the ingredients explained you may find the presentation pretentious. But we thought they were knowledgeable, friendly but not intrusive, and with great timing. Best meal we had in Pittsburgh.

Went here to celebrate my gorgeous wife's recent work success! We had the 6-course tasting menu with wine pairing. Interesting foods, exceptionally well-executed and balanced wine selections. One of the better dining options in the city. Very friendly staff and attentive service. Very convenient parking near their back door. Would definitely come here again for a special occasion. Foods included Japanese raw scallop, salt-egg-baked bronzini, fois gras, and chocolate souffle for dessert.

We had a very positive experience at The Twisted Frenchman. Our group decided on the 8 course meal with the wine pairing. The food was creative, modern and delicious. Our waiter Brian was knowledgeable and friendly. If your looking for a high end French dining experience, I strongly recommend The Twisted Frenchman, its expensive but its worth it.

All the rave reviews are 100% accurate. The food, the service, the atmosphere were all impeccable! You definitely do not feel like you’re in Pittsburgh. Since it has opened, this restaurant has definitely matured and grown into a real contender for the title, Best in the ‘Burgh. My favorites last night: The corn and foie gras soup with chantilly cream and beluga caviar and, the deep-fried brioche cube topped with foie gras and a sweet/tart fruit jam.

I have had duck before. I love it. But the smoked duck I experienced tonight at the Twisted Frenchman was eye opening to what skilled culinary artists can do with already great ingredients. The chef took it to a whole new level. Layers of flavor came to life ; from the crisp salty fat, to the most tender smokey breast I've tried, paired seamlessly with the figs and foie gras mustard emulsion. My hat is off to The Twisted Frenchman and the friendly and knowledgeable staff that served us!!!!

My husband and I recently went to the 21 course chefs table for our anniversary - it was so spectacular. Chef Andrew was so informative and welcomed any questions that we had. The staff was so nice and helpful too. Cannot day our if the 21 course we had that I enjoyed anything less than the other. Great place for a special occasion! Great job guys

So happy to have this type of cuisine in Pittsburgh! We did the tasting menu with wine pairing and everything was fabulous! There's still a little room for refinement but I would go again in a minute! Staff was friendly and knew there stuff. Highly recommend!

It is highly likely that this is the best restaurant in Pittsburgh. Too many amazing things to list. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not dining here...simply a must try.

Wow! From start to finish, great service and wonderful flavors. A must have, in the Pittsburgh food scene.
Susan Maxwell Rothenberg
Perfect meal. Thank you. Great service, thoughtfully prepared food, and great wines to match.

What a combination of sensory flavours. Things I would never think of trying proved to be a great success. The cryo food was awesome. The strawberry Italian ice with balsamic vinegar reduction was amazing.

Great meal and awesome new spot. 4 of us split about 15 plates of appetizers, vegetables, main courses, and desserts. Cocktails were amazing. Service was impeccable. I'm definitely returning!!!!

Food was good... however, learned quickly that our food totaled near the 700$ mark.. I've been around the world as a sailor, and I can assure you...this food was not worth $700. My group was under the impression that what we were going to be paying for was a three course meal for around 50$ a person.... I come to discover that after researching the web site further my group wanted to be down stairs at 'bar Frenchman' rather than upstairs venue at 'twisted Frenchman'... In the open table app it was informing the future dining participate that they would call and ask about allergies as well as what course was desired.... our party made it clear what we were interested in over the phone....The manager was more or less apathetic at the situation, even after pointing out the discrepancies he told our party 'tough shit' *in the most elegant business way possible* Also adding in that 'you should have known you were getting a different menu when more than one course came out'... Gee, remind me to receive better course etiquette training from my butler Jeeves...especially since I am oh - so - familiar with dropping 700$ on a meal. Needless to say our party felt snookered. Lessons learned. $50 dollars per person is a hell - of- a jump to $150 dollars a person... If I could do half star ratings I would... 0.5 out of 5 stars. That half of a star goes to the wait staff and cooks... once again, it was good food but not 700$ good.

The chef is too fabulous! His presentation and flavor combinations are like nothing else this city has seen. Not to mention how approachable and friendly he is as well! Trained under Thomas Keller and it shows!

I loved the ginger pear martini and the new york strip! Super! My only criticism is the dessert offerings were not my favorite. We tried both the chocolate and the fennel.

My husband and I had a lovely anniversary dinner here . The food was perfectly cooked, creative and delicious . It was pleasing to the eye as well as the palate. We will defiantly be back. I would love to see more dessert options but the ones provided were tasty and fun to watch the chef prepare . A true treat !
