This place was recommended by a friend for authentic Greek food. We stopped by on a Friday night for my birthday dinner. They told us all the tables were reserved but we could sit at the chef’s bar. So we did, and it was a special experience to watch the kitchen staff prepare the food and talk with the chef/owner. We tried the grilled octopus which was something new for me, The cocktail was a delicious concoction. They have unusual items on the menu. My husband got a hen stew.. it looked like a high end pot pie with phyllo dough. I got grilled chicken which was more like a Cornish hen. The service was great and they even gave us a baklava on the house for accidentally omitting one ingredient in my entree. They make all their own desserts which is impressive! We got basil ice cream which is unique! Fun dining experience.
Love the location just south of the hustle and bustle, next to a small dog park in a non meter parking area.
The beautiful wood bar was so inviting and can accommodate about 12 patrons. The dining area appeared to be comfortable with views of the kitchen. Our bar team were friendly and helpful with drink suggestions. Watching them tossing and mixing reminded me of Tom Cruise in the movie, Cocktail! Mixed drinks appear to be their specialty.
Our choices:
Wine (Sebastian Suggested)
Deya Wine (Spain)
Dry with a fruity finish but not too sweet
Food
(3) Mixed Dips and Pita*****
Change daily, Feta Chilli Pepper mix, Lentil mix and Tomato mix.
Grilled Whole Sardine with Cucumber Salad*****
(3) Grilled to perfection on charcoal
Veggie Moussaka*****
So light and cheesy, sauce was zesty with a bit of heat.
Received a comp of champagne for
My B-Day. Can't wait to revisit with friends and get some mixers.
The restaurant is unusually large (for Philadelphia) and has a wonderful vibe when you walk in. There is limited outdoor seating that is not directly on the street. It abuts to a grassy side yard. The waitress was not very friendly but the owner was amazing. He walked around the restaurant and greeted many tables and answered questions. The food had the types of complex flavors that I prefer. Some were too complex and a bit risky for the average palate.
Good greek food, fresh food, good service but the music is too loud.
To explain the flavor of the cuisine in 2 words, sun drenched. Service is impecable and servers are knowledgeable. Lots of seasonal choices making the emphasis here, fresh. Wines by the glass are not only reasonable, but top notch. Cocktails and food are very creative.
First we were warmly greeted by their petite blonde hostess who is so nice. She actually rocked her job by giving us two possibilities for seating. (Rarely does that happen)Then our waiter explained the specials and answered our questions. The food was so delicious and fresh. We absolutely loved the whole experience.
We live across the street, so this is our choice when we just don't feel like cooking. Great staff, fantastic service and solidly good, fresh food. The only reason I didn't give it the full five stars is that it is a little pricey for what you get, but we still keep going back for the other reasons I outlined. It competes with South Helm for title of best restaurant in the neighborhood.
Wonderful dining experience every time. Interesting, flavorful, well-prepared food. For a particularly fun experience, sit at the counter near the wood-fired oven and grill so you can watch the chef in action.
Great contemporary dishes that is light but fulfilling with great flavors and good sized portions. Also great cocktails. Parking can sometimes be a pain but worth a trip.
Drinks are amazing
Service was phenomenal !!!
Food is filled with flavor... I never write a review but this is my third time coming here and this was well deserved.
The atmosphere is great too.
Went to Kanella for brunch on a Saturday morning, and the place was pretty empty! That surprised me. Even though it was dead, service was great. Food was delicious, but as a cucumber and parsley HATER, I was disappointed to find it in almost every dish. My friend is allergic to parsley (I know, weird), and they were very accommodating to his needs. The bloody mary was a very interesting concoction with beet juice, cucumber juice, tomato juice and some other different things than you would normally find. I could barely pick out the differences of the different juices, which made me happy since I like neither beets NOR cucumbers! The lamb burger was fantastic!
Nice food. We made a meal of appetizers and were plenty full. Parking isn't easy but they do have valet. A bit noisier than I prefer but nice overall.
