Steak 'n Shake

It's wonder they are still in business. Have to place your own order at a kiosk, and they immediately ask you for a tip. I did tip but I shouldn't have as service was horrible. In fact, there is virtually no service. We ordered 2 double cheeseburgers, and cheese fries. That fact is plainly printed on our receipt. I noticed there was a large block of cheese by the employee loafing around the grill. There were only 10 other people inside, all waiting for food. Our order came after a 40 minute wait. When I received our food, no cheese on the cheeseburgers and no cheese on the cheese fries. When this was pointed out to an employee, they just shrugged and have a smirk. Also the wall where I was sitting had a constant run of ants up and down. If I had not been forced to pay immediately, I would have walked out. If health inspectors don't shut it down, I can't imagine they will last much longer.

Hours of operation at this location is 10-10. I showed up at 8:45 pm but the shake machine was down. I understand that it is a pain to clean, but there is no way the shake machine and ice cream machine should be down at a Steak N Shake. Why else do you go there after 7:30 pm? If it is a one time thing, that is fine. I understand things breaking, but this location is famous for not wanting to clean it later in the evening. In addition, these guys do not know how to follow a request. A simple request to leave the sauce off of the Frisco Melt and they can’t even do that. If I managed this location, I would definitely have a more reliable staff working after hours.

Everything was through a kiosk and there was no size options for the drinks. we ordered cheese for our fries but they were out of cheese and yet we were charged for it. It was a hassle to reimburse the cheese so I exchanged it for something else at least they did that. The food was cold when it came out, they forgot our shakes. When they made our shakes they were missing pertinent ingredients like no cookie dough in chocolate chip cookie dough flavor. Besides having a limited menu, it was a pretty sad experience. I miss the whole Dine in feel of the old steak ‘n Shake experience.

Showed up at 2pm. Shake machine was out of order and after ordering found out people had been waiting over an hour for food. I realize there are only two people working but if it’s that backed up it would be nice to know before ordering. Tables were dirty. Bathroom was out of paper towel. Not a great experience for our first time at Steak and Shake. Would not recommend.

Definitely a staff shortage, which is understandable in this day and age, but - outside of the manager who was definitely putting on her A game - the staff that was there was lacking any sense of urgency. I kind of wished I couldn't see the kitchen where a burger sat off the grill for literally 5 minutes before being dressed and wrapped for someone else's order. Maybe everybody else but the manager was new... But that would be hard for me to believe.

I really don't want to post this review because I have been a fan of Steak and Shake most of my life and this location has been a great spot for friends, family and students over the years. However, my last visit was horrible. They aren't open for inside dinning since the beginning of the pandemic. Drive through only!!! They only operate 5 pm to 8:30-ish. I happened to be driving by and they were surprisingly open for drive thru service. There were only two cars in front of me but they had me pull forward after I paid even though they weren't that busy. I waited and waited and waited. They served FIVE cars after me!!! After 25 minutes of waiting, I had to get out of my car and bang on the front window for someone to acknowledge me since the doors were locked. One of the cooks finally came over and I told him I was waiting for 25 minutes! His response was, "I wondered why you were sitting there!" That tells me, they knew I was sitting there and no one came to check on me. Finally, they gave me my order but the burger had cheese and I specifically asked for no cheese since I am lactose intolerant! Sad that such a previously great restaurant is going down like this!😭

I visited this location on the evening of Father's Day. They were very busy, especially the drive thru. I'm adjusting to the new concept Steak 'n Shake has moved to, but we still chose to dine in. The staff were working their tails off. They were still pleasant and getting the food out as fast as possible.
