Buttercup Bake Shop

Buttercup is absolutely amazing. I moved out of NYC to Florida two years ago, and I constantly check google to make sure Buttercup has not closed due to covid (I would be devastated if they did). As soon as it is safe to travel again, this will be my first stop when I visit Manhattan. This place is amazing!!! Miss you buttercup!

I stopped in after a few years away (not often down 2nd Ave these days) and got the BEST piece of Strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting. Even better was the understanding service from Farrah, who didn't bat an eyelash when I asked for a slice "from the side with the most frosting". Yes, I'm one of those people :) She was the best and communicated an understanding of the needs of cake fanatics. I needn't have been concerned as when I got home it was a HUGE slice relative to Magnolia Bakery and the service was just nicer. I called to apologize for having to jump on my phone while checking out...and to get Farrah's name because that's the least I can do for GREAT hospitality and service in the face of we frazzled 2020 survivors. Cake helps !!

Buttercup Bake Shop is probably my favorite cake shop in New York. They are great for pre-ordered special occasions as well as drop in cake-by-the-slice. Their cakes do tend to be sweet, but their vanilla buttercream is reminiscent of childhood holiday cookie frosting and has been a hit with everyone I’ve shared it with. This location has a lot of interesting flavors to try including PB&J and Ube. Cake slices are on par for Manhattan $5+, but they are massive and can be shared or split in to multiple meals.
