Opened by Nicholas Morgenstern in 2014 it was on the advice of friends that a stop was made at Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream on Sunday, the Bowery flagship not quite as busy in the days before Christmas as mid-Summer but eighty-eight flavors nonetheless available in addition to Cakes, Pies and several housemade Toppings.

Found at 2 Rivington Street and resembling a classic Ice Cream parlor, the multitude of options displayed on a board hanging over glass cases filled by small-batch tubs, guests are invited to peruse sections arranged by bases such as “Vanillas,” “Tropics,” and “Sorbets” before making a selection, the limit of two samples per guest only fair to avoid lengthy queues,  though at least a dozen visits would be necessary to determine whether Morganstern’s execution is uncompromised  across the collection.

Utilizing no additives or stabilizers, high-Fat Milk and quality ingredients instead used to focus flavors ranging from Chocolate to Coffee or Fruit, it was after one taste of Cookies and Cream that an 11-year-old was sold but willing to taste French Fry, the flavor salty and spot-on while Sesame Caramel and Peaches in Clotted Cream each also showed a skilled hand at mixing sweet and savory.

Seeing the boy’s mother delighted by rich Bourbon Vanilla, one sizable $5.10 dip served atop a housemade Sugar Cone, it was after lengthy debate that a slice of Koppelman Ice Cream Cake rounded out the visit, everything taken outside to enjoy in temperatures above 50ᵒF and the combination of Peanut Butter Sponge, Peanut Praline Ice Cream plus layers of Concord Grape Jelly all performing beautifully.

This is one of the best places to have ice cream in New York. Tucked away in between some of the old residencial buildings a tiny place but great ice creams. There is a big line whenever you go there at any time of the day. I stood in line for 45 mins just to get inside that place and the another 10 mins to get my order. But it’s worth the wait. The ice creams and delicious and they are perfect round in shape. They have some great options to choose from and all of them tastes very nice.

It was 2°C when I tried this ice cream. I order one cup Salted Chocolate and another one Vanilla Bourbon. I’m a chocoholic, and for me the taste is good. The texture is like a gelato, I dunno this is ice cream or gelato, because the store said “ice cream” not gelato. The price isn’t pricey, worth it with the size and taste. There’s nothing wrong have a cup an ice cream in cold weather, so you have to try this one now.

With summer winding down, I’ve been getting a lot of requests from people looking to get in their last few frosty licks. Personally I don’t eat a lot of ice cream due to a combination of lactose intolerance and a preference to fill up on the savories. But the places on this list are worth the pain even in the dead of winter. Below are my Top 5 ice cream shops in New York, with a bonus vegan and ice cream sandwich option. Enjoy your sugar coma.

Morgenstern's Finest Ice Cream Parlor is an idyllic oasis of frozen delights. This ice cream is made with the finest ingredients and has flavors that will boggle your mind. There are five flavors for vanilla and chocolate. Five? Vanilla could be Madagascar, burnt honey, rum raisin, French or bourbon. Chocolate has malted crunch, salted chocolate and cocoa nib and two more. A chef brought me here for an after dinner dessert soon after it had opened and I wanted to eat all the flavors. At the moment I like burnt honey, strawberry and smoky mocha. I haven't mustered the courage needed to have one of the prodigious sundaes or the banana split - as yet! It is a blessing that I don't live near by because I would become a ten ton tessie and have to waddle in sideways - which I would continue to do regardless because this ice cream is luscious!

Highly recommended!

Easily the best ice cream i have ever had. Both flavors, coffee and salted caramel, were on point. I would recommend Morgenstern's to everyone living in NYC or just visiting. Definitely, worth the visit. Yes, it is THAT good!

I love how creeeaaammmy the ice cream is, the classic and fun flavors, and the myriad of toppings to choose from. I got a scoop of bourbon vanilla + a scoop of strawberry + chopped chocolate + luxardo cherries.

Which ice-cream parlor is open for breakfast?

Well Morgenstern’s is…offering a standout Avocado Ice-cream Toast as early as 8 AM!

Now how can one go wrong with a few scoops of beautifully constructed avocado ice cream served on thick toasted slices of Japanese milk bread, garnishes with olive oil, salt and pepper?

Nicholas Morgenstern’s has redefined the all American ice cream parlor by creating beautifully textured flavors at his Lower East Side parlor. Each batch of ice cream is created with complete emphasis on flavor.

With offerings that range from Burnt Honey Vanilla to Pistachio Chocolate Oat to Black Ass Licorice and a variety of specials – Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream is certainly one of the hottest spots in town.

For someone who works at a sweets shop, the staff isn't very sweet. The dessert on the other hand was delicious. I had the salted caramel sundae and despite being pretty pricey, it was perfect to split with a friend. This sundae comes with pretzel bits and drizzled caramel which really make it, and it also has caramel "cake" pieces on the bottom that personally I wasn't a fan of. They were very dry and crumbly despite being under a mound of ice cream. I would definitely order this sundae again but it wouldn't be a top priority before I try all their other flavors that also looked really good

Despite a somewhat daunting line at times, it's worth the wait! Went w/ my parents a few weeks ago and we were lucky enough to snag a few stools to sit at. They have these great Venetian windows that open up wide when the weather's nice out and the crew scooping the ice cream has great energy. Really eager to go back and try their Chocolate Oat flavor!

I read a bit about the hype on this new brand of Morgansterns and I was finally in the neighborhood and able to give it a try. I had a medium sized cup with the salted peanut butter and the vanilla soft serve. Quick observation is that for about eight dollars you get a pretty stingy portion that is not worth it. Come on guys, this is not gelato imported from Italy. This is a Lower Eastside product so let’s not gouge our customers. Having said that, I really enjoyed the flavor and texture of the products. My friends who tried these in a couple of other flavors, felt that they were too sweet and I am usually sensitive to excessive sugar, but I did not feel it in my selections. The shop seems like it was thrown together rather quickly, the lighting is a little bit bright and not relaxing, but maybe they want you to leave faster. Although the menu does indicate that the soft serve is dairy free, they might do well to include that in some of the signage up above .

Fun little spot to pop in and grab some delicious soft serve. I opted for the Super Choc and Salted PB in a Waffle Cone and it was a perfect blend of salty/sweet. Will definitely be back to try out the other flavors.

What a cool place to check out, heard a lot of good things about this spot so decided to check it out. The line was somewhat long Friday night but it went by fast. The ice creams were unique and delicious. Toppings are extra but I think the plain ice creams are worth it. Definitely stop by if you’re in the area!

I loved this place I got strawberry and Thai tea and my boyfriend got mango(he rates it an 8). My personal fav was the Thai tea the flavor was on point and the strawberry was the right amount of sweet. None of the flavors were overpoweringly sweet so it was perfectly refreshing! I rate it a 8.8/10

Delish non-dairy ice cream !!! Love my coconut thai ice tea, the flavor and sweetness is just nice and balance. On the other hand, the peanut butter is good but a little way too sweet (take note morgenstern’s)

For starters, the prices here are average and the staff is very polite. Now that that’s out of the way let’s get into the nitty-gritty. I got the coconut Thai tea and Ube cookies and cream. The coconut Thai tea was very good and the flavor profile was really deep, both the coconut and tea flavor come in waves, but manage to balance and enhance each other. I was a little more disappointed with the Ube cookies and cream however. It’s just Ube soft serve with cookie crunch on top. They could have done so much with it, like adding swirls of Oreo frosting in or adding the crunch to the ice cream itself. There was a line when I entered but it moves very fast and you get your ice cream almost as soon as you’re done ordering.

Vegan soft serve ice cream, tons of flavor and topping options, including dips and creative crunchy mixes (mint choc was great). Chocolate was very good, matcha was fine. Peanut butter was great, especially in the twist with chocolate. Nice to have a place with so much variety !!

Vegan soft serve is hard to come by but this place has so many exciting flavor options! I got the chocolate and salted peanut butter swirl with sesame Chex and it was so yummy and creamy. A little on the expensive side and not great seating but good for a little pick up and walk around

I don’t typically opt for dairy free ice cream but tried this out and was really impressed! I got the salted peanut butter which was super creamy and so satisfying. For the naysayers, I don’t think you can compare this 1:1 with dairy ice cream but go with an open mind!
