When I first had the pleasure of dining at Smith and Wollensky in NYC, I never imagined how delicious the food would be. I was a teenager and my parents brought me to this restaurant on a whim. They had been before but hadn't spoken of it to my sister and me. Though the ambiance was what you would expect of a steak house, the food was in a realm of its own. My father started the table's order with an appetizer that WAS NOT listed on the menu. It was a seafood sampler of some sort that was only known secretly by those who knew to ask for it. Apparently, my father knew about it because he had been among businessmen once who ordered it in his presence. Though I'll admit the cost of this sampler was quite hefty (nearly $100), it was truly amazing. Crab happens to be something I happen to be a bit of a "food snob" about, and the crab served in this sampler was delicious. I could have eaten just the sampler and been satisfied. However, I did order a steak (a filet) because, after all, Smith and Wollensky is a steak house primarily. My cut was perfectly cooked and so tender. As a teen, I was one to frequently use steak sauces to accompany my meat, but this cut required nothing. It was delightful all on its own. I would certainly return to Smith and Wollensky in the future. Writing this very review has even started to make my mouth water. Perhaps I'll make a reservation now...

Stopped in for a drink and dessert late in the evening. The chocolate peanut butter cake was just what I needed to fill my chocolate craving that day. So rich and delicious.
I ate here a few years ago when I came to NYC, i am so happy to find back still some of the best meat I ever ate. Well done to the kitchen, you guys rock !!!! Thank you for keeping standards up, what a reference for steakhouses around the world.
The meat lovers pilgrimage should include this bastion of old world tastes and style. Heavily wooded and with supple furniture, it feels as if this place grew out of the ground and will live on forever. Their seafood is excellent I am told, but from personal experience, I can only speak to their steaks which are top class. Better, newer places might have sprung up but you gotto tip yiur hat to history.
A unique dining experience. Old world charm in the 21st century. The name was chosen by taking two surnames from random out of the telephone directory. Sometimes called "the quintessential NYC steakhouse" Smith & Wollensky is one of the highest grossing restaurants in the USA, featuring USDA Prime steaks, dry aged and hand butchered on premises.
This restaurant is all about an old style of service lost in time and profit margins. Your wait staff will make you feel very important and dignified. So charm and class are two words that would best describe this dining experience.
This restaurant is also much more than just steaks - the menu is extensive & so is the wine list. I also liked their 'world famous' Carrot Cake. The serves are large so be sure to make extra room.
If the walls don't provide enough information, guests are encouraged to ask wait staff about the iconic restaurant's legends - some of these stories can be quite entertaining.
A truly full rounded dining experience.
The grill located in the same building but with its own entrance around the corner is open up to I believe 2am. If you find yourself looking for great food late night then this is your place. You know the meat is good. You can explore that on your own. My advice is make sure you get the hash browns. They are amazing.
La atención de este lugar es muy buena, y el salón muy acogedor. La carne es de calidad pero los precios un poco altos. Un acompañamiento que recomiendo son los espárragos que se adaptan bien a cualquier carne que elijas.
One of the many NYC Steakhouses!. I have been dining at this Steakhouse for years mostly for business engagements. The Steakhouse decor has the look of an old woody tavern which I believe has not changed since they were called Manny Wolff’s Steakhouse. Smith & Wollensky history is best told on the walls of the restaurant with great wacky photos, reviews, restaurant awards, and personal brass name plates hung over favorite tables. As always, the service is very attentive and the food is usually always good. The Pork Chop and the Crab Meat Salad which the restaurant did special for me were excellent
The old reliable. For a late nite supper, the grill and bar is hopping and open until 2am while still serving a perfectly done ribeye. The hash potatoes were nice and crispy but a bit drenched in butter.
Twice a Year. Two times every year we have a sales conference at our NYC location. The first night in, before the others arrive, a friend and I always head to this place. I have no complaints. We order the same thing because it's become a ritual: before dinner we have a Grey Goose martini, dirty; filet mignon, creamed spinach, and mashed potatoes for the meal. The martini has always been cold and good, the steak nice and cooked as requested, the spinach creamy, and the mashed potatoes hot and good.
It's tough to screw up this order and they don't. If you want those items, this place will please you.
Although we usually walk in, or maybe make reservations through the hotel without much advance notice, we have always had a nice table. The atmosphere is loud without being noisy. It's always packed (but I guess that can be said about almost every restaurant in Manhattan) but we never felt cramped. You don't have to be "server of the year" to get the order straight, and we have no special requests, so the service has always been brisk and efficient.
I can't speak to anything else on the menu, but what we order has had us coming back, twice a year, for eight years. Considering we can go anywhere we please (ain't expense accounts grand!), that says something.
You'll leave well fed and in a good mood... we do.
Absolutely great steak and seafood. I cannot say enough about the great steak and lobster I had. Peter Mcguire my waiter was top drawer. My family have since been there and the same excellence of service food
My next time in New York my wife and I will dine there
Earl Hope of Vancouver Canada
Old school charm!. Old school steakhouse! Really like S&W! Very good quality food! Get the potatoes! Service is old school and solid.
I have been eating here for 20 years. I no longer work in NYC but whenever I visit I try to eat at S& W. I took my son here last month and he was amazed by the shellfish appetizer.
B+ orrrrr C?. It was tasty.... pricey
see & be seen crowd though....ehh
Great Steaks. Service is one of the best anywhere. Ambiance is worthy of any great steak house. Everything is of course ala carte, bring a hefty wallet and prepare to pay. I have been there several times, great place for a date. I might return again,,,
Got to visit while in NYC. A little more pricey than some other steak houses but I have to say they have the most amazing steaks and amazing sides. You've got to visit this place while in NY. The only downside was that after booking a table we seemed to have been ushered upstairs based on how we were dressed. If we'd turned up in suits we'd have been given a table in the main restaurant.
This sets the standard-all else are imitators.
A New York Must. For steak, in manhattan there is no other. Just smashing. Super wine list, Great service, and will amaze for that special moment or evening as they did for me, without even being asked. Can't say enough about the great food, and great service. Seafood quality matches the Steak quality too!
Steaks are excellent, but expect a crowd. The steaks here are second to none, but do expect it to be packed, don't be late, and the volume level comes with the crowd. You come here for a great steak and a nice selection of wines. (for the true wine pundit, ask the maitre d' for the "written" wine selection. Excellent.
Great steak. The meat is high quality and the service is fantastic. Any place that gets their stone crab from Joe's in Miami is a winner in my book.
Almost Perfect. The steak and wine selections are fantastic, but why can't I get a mashed potato? So close.
Good times. Great steaks and wines. This is one of those places that you go to be pampered. The servers are a little old and cranky, but knowledgeable.
Now my husband had built this place up and although my eyes watered at the cost of our New Yorker steak it was incredibly delicious, cooked how we'd asked for it and in no need of any starters, sides or puddings. It also had an wonderful buzzy atmosphere and was jam packed on a Thursday.
"One of the most trafficked restaurants in New York and among the most celebrated steakhouses in the world" - so says Smith + Wollensky's website. I was delighted to eat here on this visit to New York (my attempt failed last time - unsurprisingly - with a vegetarian friend!). And even more delighted that it fulfilled my expectations after a three year build-up. Hopefully, the photo below (courtesy of theanorak) shows the quality of the steak cuts and preparation. Outstanding. Lardbutty restaurant of the week: Smith & Wollensky Fillet and sirloin steak While Smith & Wollensky might fall into the premium restaurant bracket, it feels very comfortably down to earth with it's cosy bars and friendly, efficient service. Restaurant info: ~ Lardbutty rating: 4 / 5 ~ Type: American / steak-house ~ Menu: Smith + Wollensky menus ~ Address: 797 Third Avenue, New York ~ Post/zip code: New York 10022 ~ Website: Smith + Wollensky NYC website ~ Location: Smith + W
Porterhouse for two is my turf of choice, the cut has a bit of everything which I love. Juicy and the beef flavors are prominent. Not as amazing as Peter Luger but pretty close. The texture is a bit different, maybe the amount of butter has something to do with it or the temperature and extremely hot plate they serve it on.
Porterhouse was cooked just right, Fried calamari was lightly battered, cream spinach was light and smooth and hash brown was crispy crust and soft inside. All the food was great except the bacon was way too salty and house bread wasn't fresh. Chocolate cake was dark and just the right amount of sweetness. It was definitely an enjoyable dinner.
The steaks were superb and cooked to order. The staff were super friendly and efficient! Well worth the price you pay for!
One of the best steak houses in NYC!! Everything was incredibly delicious!! I especially enjoyed the Prime Rib and Carrot Cake. The service was also exceptional. The waiter advised us on the perfect portion for two - he recommended that we share one serving of pea soup and one of Prime Rib. They arrived on two separate plates and were the perfect size for both of us!
I’ll definitely be back!
Amazing dinner celebrating my friend's engagement without him. The atmosphere, the food and and staff really completed the experience. Thick steakhouse bacon was divine, especially paired with the house mustard. The magnificent holiday sangria stood out on its own, Shoutout to Sam for being a gem and always be attentive. And I can't forget Brad with his lovely singing voice. I've hope to see more of this place in the future.
We always love smith and wollensky. The filet mignon was great! Perfectly cooked. The sides and dessert are always the best part though. I love their hashbrowns since they go so well with the steak and the mac and cheese and brussel sprouts were both great as well. The strawberry shortcake was so delicious and sweet! Highly recommend
Had the Cajun rib steak and normal fillet. Meats were of high standards but the Cajun was too over powering for me, where as the fillet felt a little under seasoned.
Not the best steak house I’ve been but overall still worth it.
Lighting was a little dim but it’s the atmosphere 👍
My favorite was the crab lumps! Large portion, sweet and fresh!
You can skip the prawns though.
As my wife and I were on our anniversary holiday, they gave a a free cheese cake which was amazing.
Overall still a good 8.5/10, I would return again 👍
Porter steak was delicious as per our request of medium but it could use a bit more of seasoning. Seafood plater for two was fresh and delicious. Our waiter was attentive and made us feel welcomed. Extensive wine selection but none on cocktails.
All the dishes we have ordered were excellent. the highest quality meats and perfect cooking points. The exceptional atmosphere as well as the attention of the waiters, very careful and attentive.
I can’t recommend this place enough!!! The service was out of this world. We visited from California to celebrate a friends bday and they gave us an experience of a life time. First we were greeted and sat at the Chef’s table. Bacci and Luis made sure we were taken care of. Chef Josh also came out to greet us. They were gracious enough to give us complementary dishes and gave us a tour of the restaurant! The kitchen staff were also nice enough to sing my friend happy birthday and gave us the best dessert! Thank you to the entire staff and Smith and Wollensky! Food was amazing, and the staff was even better!!!
It felt like a New York steak house - go to the bar when you arrive to have a drink, they know your table so they put the drinks straight on your tab, straight answers about the menu and suggestions for the table, efficient (and friendly) service, and out the door in no time with a couple of extra pounds. The prime rib and t-bone were great tasty cuts!
As soon as we arrived for our reservation, the staff was quick and very attentive. They were amazing at helping my husband pick out a wine to go with our meal. The steak was cooked as ordered, and everything was hot when it arrived at the table. The restaurant is dark, but that adds to the overall experience. If you have the chance to go here, I highly recommend it. If you order anything, get a steak, the loaded potatoes, and dessert. The chocolate mousse cake melted in my mouth. We will be back!
I have read about this restaurant for years. This classic restaurant lived up to its billing. The steaks were perfect. The side’s spinach, mash potatoes , macaroni and cheese were excellent. The carrot cake was sinful. The service was amazing. Our waiter had been here for 40 years. Highly recommended
This is my favorite S&W. Tonight we we very fortunate to have Cammie as a server. Is old school charm and attention to detail made our dinning experience that much better. He introduced himself extremely professional manner, laid out the specials, and gave us an idea and a direction to move forward with. We both decided to have the massive, delicious Cajun bone in ribeye. Fresh asparagus, oysters, and a wonderful dessert to finish it off.
They did not have chocolate cheesecake, so I ordered the cheesecake and the chocolate cake and decided to make my own chocolate cheesecake. It was delicious.
See you next time Cammie.
We absolutely loved our food: ribeye, crab cakes, Mac & cheese shells, Asparagus, wine. I do not recommend the creamed spinach tho. We sent it back & got asparagus instead. Our waiter, Tony, was great!! Love the atmosphere in this small, intimate space.
I love the Wollensky Grill, the atmospheric, sometimes damned noisy but fantastic , bar and grill just next door to the main restaurant.
You can't beat the steaks. You just can't. My last visit (Dec 2023) loses one star for service, as I got asked twice if they could clear away my plates and I was clearly still eating! There were spare tables so it is not as if there was any desperation to get rid of me, so I have no idea what was going on.
Great response from manager who empathized with my irritation wonderfully.
Still an amazing place - will be back soon.
