Review Gumbo Shop - New Orleans

Deb Clif
We had an amazing visit at the Gumbo Shop. Everyone was super friendly the moment we walked into the entryway. The inside had two wall paintings that looked old, but unsure of their age. There was a courtyard as well. I felt I was in Europe. The food was also very good. Everyone, including our two teens ate everything. The bread was fresh, and our server was really nice and very attentive.

What to say? The jambalaya, shrimp creole, and gumbo were stand outs for me. I would skip the mint julep if I were to go again. It just didn’t live up to my expectations and didn’t taste good. The best part of the meal was the pecan pie a la mode. It came out warmed up, which was nice. The bread pudding was also covered in condensed milk and was quite sweet. These desserts were the best part of the meal for me. Our server was polite and attentive to our table and the food came out quickly. Would stop by again on my next NO trip!

Came here after a long day with my friends on a girl’s trip and wandered in even just for the name. Knew we wanted something hearty and comforting and this was it. It was a little cold when we walked in, maybe they had the AC blasting? But we were seated quickly and brought bread promptly. The food was great, warm and seasoned well and all the New Orleans must tries in one place, which is exactly what we were looking for. All of the varying stews and beans and rice (I don’t want to butcher the spelling) were cooked well. My friends and I were hungry and thought we ordered well but it’s heavier so we didn’t end up finishing everything on the table. But we wish we could!

Came here because all of the good reviews for gumbo and was not disappointed. Wait staff was very friendly. I ordered the chicken and sausage gumbo and it came out in less than two minutes with a bit of rice. Had a cold beer to wash it all down. Definitely recommend.

Came here on a Saturday night around 9pm and it wasn't too busy. We got seated promptly and was attended to very quickly. I got the Chicken Andouile gumbo, and my girlfriend got the jambalaya. The food was very flavorful and delicious. I devoured my food in a short period of time. Highly recommend this place if you're visiting the area.

We came here for lunch and needed a place that had vegan options and we hit the jackpot. We got all gumbo options - Seafood, Chicken, and Vegan - all were delicious. Note - they have okra so they have a more thick texture, but it was delicious. Perfect portion, not too much. We also had the bread pudding - phenomenal and very sweet. It was my mom’s birthday and we got a second dessert - brownie with ice cream - also phenomenal and huge! Special shout out to Sam, our server, who was so nice, attentive and made each of us feel super special and taken care of. Note: they won’t seat you unless your entire party is present.

This was a great place to stop in for appetizers. Gaynell was the biggest sweetheart! I had the crab cake appetizer with a hurricane drink. It was delicious, even the bread for the table came out nice and warm with butter. The location itself is pretty small, but the area doesn't call for much space anyhow. Would recommend for sure.

⭐️The service is great and food comes fast. ⭐️Drinks are strong & very refreshing in the heat. There’s a huge choice of frozen daiquiri flavours, I had melon and would recommend it here! 🍹🍈 As for the food… I had a cup of gumbo as a starter and creole shrimp for main. It’s not a high dining place and there is definitely better quality food in New Orleans, but will do the job if you’re hungry and want not fast food, fast. 😊

Gumbo Shop was a great place as a tourist to get a taste of New Orleans. I went by myself and was seated right away around lunch time on a Friday. The Jambalaya was delicious and I had actually thought about ordering another portion for takeout. The Seafood Gumbo was great but I think next time I'd rather just gumbo without seafood as there was minimal seafood.

Amazing local food in the heart of the French Quarter. You can't go wrong with this restaurant. Food was delicious - we had the 3-course dinner with gumbo bowl, combo, the espagnol chicken and bread pudding for dessert. Service was very fast (maybe a bit too fast for me). The only problem (for me) was: NO RESERVATIONS! You have to wait in line to get your number called. My wife and I waited for 20ish minutes. Still worth it though.

We got there around 5PM and didn't wait long to get our table. 🦐 We had: - Soup of the day - Crawfish and Pasta in Tasso Cream - Blackened Fish Nuggets - Jambalaya - Hot Roast Beef Po-Boy
Brian
My wife and I enjoyed a nice dinner at the Gumbo Shop. For apps, we had the blackened fish bites, and spinach and artichoke dip the fish bites were melt in your mouth buttery with the sauce. The artichoke and spinach dip was heavy on the spinach with store bought chips. I would not recommend it. For the main event, I had the red beans and rice with smoked sausage and my wife had the Chicken and Andouille gumbo. The Red beans and rice were well cooked and were perfectly balanced with a lot of flavor. The sausage was a great addition adding a smokiness and juiciness to the dish. The Chicken and Andouille gumbo was delicious, well balanced with a hint of spice and not over powering. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu, attentive without being over bearing. In fairness when we dinned it was not a full dining room so the sound of the daiquiri machine was loud and we needed to pause our conversation until the machine was off.

Best gumbo I had in New Orleans, hands down. The atmosphere inside is perfect, with an open courtyard inside and intimate seating arrangements, really felt like a hidden gem walking in here. Service was quick and helpful and the food was simply amazing. If you're anywhere in the French quarter, you must make the gumbo shop one of your stops.

One of the best Creole food I have ever had. Crawfish etouffe’, gumbo and jambalaya were just incredible. We had take out so I cannot rate the service at the table. However my order was prepared really fast.
Greg N. Misemer
This was not normal. Over an hour from order to receiving food. Chicken and seafood gumbo got mixed together and was cold. Luckily no seafood allergies. Our waiter ignored our table. Poor service, poor food I was very disappointed.
Jacob Boshears
We were with a student group, and were given $15 to eat wherever we wanted. I got the chicken gumbo, which they claim was voted the best in the city by locals, and it was incredible! The wait staff were really good. Most of us were able to eat well under the $15. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Ty Walls
Mikey. Not Mickey is the most pleasant, professional server we have had in a long time. The food was top notch. Remember in the movie Ratatouille when Ego, the food critic took his first bite of his life changing meal? Yes, my first bite of dinner at the Gumbo Shop had the same effect on me. It took me back to joyful memories.
Jason Ross
Food was awesome and the waitress (Mrs Brenda) added so much color to the meal. We had BBQ shrimp, crawfish etouffe and a chicken salad that was to die for.
Alicia Gray
The food was amazing and the staff were very nice & helpful. I would highly recommend to eat here. I tried a few wonderful dishes (all were delicious) but my personal favorite was the Chicken Andouille Gumbo!!
Mike Calori
This place was recommended to us and we couldn’t have been happier. There was a line out the door which we only waited in about 10-15 minutes. We sat in a nice spot outside. We got the gator sausage and BBQ shrimp for appetizers. Both were delicious but the gator sausage was absolutely amazing. Our entrees we both got the creole sampler with the crawfish etoufee and it ALL was amazing. We may stop in again before we leave town!

Food was fabulous with generous portions. Our server, Brenda, was charming and represented everything good and inviting about New Orleans. I highly recommend a visit!
Ben Ryan
We went for gumbo and sides during our holiday last week. Beautiful dishes, excellent service, very reasonable prices, very picturesque location and brilliant atmosphere. We'll visit again next time we're in New Orleans - best gumbo in town for a reason :)
Robby Sherman
I absolutely LOVE this place. I highly recommend... the gumbo. I always get what I call “The Trifecta” seafood, chicken & sausage, & spicy turkey! Add the garlic hot sauce to top it off!
JauntyTour
This is supposed to be voted best gumbo in New Orleans. I like the ambiance here over other restaurants in the area by far. Less heavy dark wood chairs and low lighting typical of the French Quarter, but a bright, wide and airy European Cafe feel. Great service, great crawfish roumelade.
Kemal Tugcu
One of the must visit Cajun / Creole restaurants in French Quarter. always crowded during day and night. Chicken Jambalaya was good. Gumbo and Shrimp Creole are OK but taste a little too fishy - perfect if you like it that way. I tried them all by ordering only side dishes. Must pour a little hot sauce over all of them for better taste.
Matthew Ketchie
Authentic Creole & Cajun in the French Qtr. Great setting in a historical building. Tim was very attentive and amazing as our server. Complimentary French bread served. Eater beware: the Po Boys are huge! I had the jambalaya and was slightly disappointed on the serving size and lack of spice (easily patched up by the sauces and spices at the table). Not easy to get to by car...plan to park and walk. Only “beef” was the line to the 2 small bathrooms is nearly always present.

I've already had gumbo at least twice in New Orleans so far, but I stilled wanted to check out The Gumbo Shop. New Orleans is a Mecca of culinary temptations and as a native I wouldn't want it any other way. Temptation and atonement are part of our culture. With religious roots that are primarily Catholic, thanks to our French founders, the church affects our calendar in a rather unique way: we celebrate Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, the final day of feasting before 40 days of Lent. The traditional abstinence from meat during this time leading up to Easter means that we have to "sacrifice" by enjoying the bounty from nearby waters: fish, shrimp and oysters from the Gulf of Mexico, crabs from Lake Pontchatrain, and crawfish from area swamplands.
Kristian Henry
Hadn’t tried any gumbo before but I found it very interesting, enjoyed the seafood taste and the little pieces of crab that came with it. The consistency was gluggy like but nonetheless was quite nice and full of flavour. <br/><br/>Next I tried the hot roast beef Po boy and wowee I really enjoyed that! Tender hot roast beef with hot gravy in a warm, soft buttery bread. <br/><br/>All in all I’m glad I finally tried New Orleans infamous Gumbo and Po Boy

Great place. Always packed. It was nice to have a vegetarian option for my Indian friend. He said he has the same dish (black beans and rice) back home. Prices are great.
Anusha Manjunath
Are you looking for some authentic southern food while in NOLA, so here is the place-<br/><br/>They have vegetarian, cajun and a lot more varieties of Gumbo. They taste delicious. Try the small plates and pick your best one for your big meal.<br/><br/>The restaurant is very southern in it's ambiance and the service is nice and quick. And request for  a vegetarian menu and they have some really interesting menu for vegetarians.

On our vacation to New Orleans we visited this place in the French quarter. It is a very small place with very good food. My wife had a roast beef po-boy sandwich with garlic mashed potatoes. She said it was pretty good. I had the sausage gumbo and the jambalaya. The jambalaya was pretty good. The gumbo, on the other hand, was another story. It was not good, it was fantastic! On a 1 to 5 scale I would rate it a 13. It was so flavorful I did not even add any hot sauce to it. My wife was in shock that I did not add any hot sauce like I always do. There is a reason they call this place The Gumbo Shope, they nailed the name. If you get a chance to come here, definately try the Gumbo. Very reasonable prices, very good service and out of this world gumbo. Honestly, give this place a try.
Anirudh Gairola
After reading good reviews about this place we decided to have lunch at Gumbo shop. I ordered okra seafood gumbo. To be honest, I didn't not like the food. Apart from food, the ambiance and service were good.
Truth Be Told Australia
Service was great , I had the fish in the hollandaise sauce and creamed spinach !! Yummmmm , very rich but that's what's expected I guess. He had the steak and it was cooked to perfection, as was the fish . Worth a visit . Loads of staff
WSNA
Quite the find... great creole dishes. The crawfish remoulade salad is an excellent way to start the meal. The wait staff is friendly and efficient, and always willing to explain and answer questions. The Gumbo is by far the best we have had in town. The combination platter covers all the basics and will leave you wanting to come back. They were packed and had a line out to the street both times we went. They seem to have a 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 seatings (roughly). They don’t take reservations so come prepared for a wait, which is more than worth it!
Snakez
Expect a line up on the weekends. We waited about 15 minutes Saturday night. Our server was helpful and explained to us the specials and questions we had about the menu. One of the specials was linguine with shrimp. Did not really like the taste of it... was expecting more of a tomato base than what we got. The jambalaya came with shrimp, sausage, chicken and crab and was delicious. Wasn’t spicy but they give you different hot sauces on the table.
John.sineath
Absolutely loved it. Great atmosphere on patio and the blackened catfish with crab cake and cream shrimp sauce was amazing! Glad we came early because there was a big line when we left.
Matthew Finowicki
My wife and I visited Gumbo Shop restaurant while on our trip to New Orleans a few weeks ago. After dinner, it was time to pay. The waiter never brought the itemized receipt, just a credit card statement to sign. I checked prices on line later and found out that we were overcharged by a lot, like 70%. I contacted management via their website but never heard from them. I guess cheating and ripping off tourists are approved by the restaurant management. Stay away from this place.

Great ambience and atmosphere.<br/><br/>What looked like a long queue to get a table moved quite quickly. The staff are very friendly and we were seated at a table in a mini courtyard. The look is rustic and cosy and has a lovely charm to it.<br/><br/>The food was excellent. Very flavourful with a lovely aroma.<br/><br/>The staff I thought were genuinely friendly and a cut above the rest of the stuff in the vicinity.<br/><br/>
Kimberly Goss Sawyer
Really enjoyed the crab cake, red beans and rice with sausage was delicious. There was a line but it probably took us about 25-30 minutes to get in but it was a Monday evening. The creole combination was excellent especially the jambalaya. Would definitely recommend this place.
Roro Hamwi
The food were great we got the crab cake which is not on the menu it is filled with crab topped with shrimp and white sauce and creole shrimp it was delicious and flavored . This is the only place beside acme I love to dine in

The decor and atmosphere were great. We sat in the mini-courtyard outside which was adorable. The servers were so nice, and gave us a seat under the large umbrella for the better considering it started raining during our meal (but we and our stuff remained dry)!<br/>The coffee is delicious, if you trust the waiters, it comes with a special sauce that is made of rainbows and unicorn tears.<br/>They gave great suggestions on what to eat as well. The crab cakes are absolutely delicious! And so were the alligator sausage!<br/>Very reasonably priced. I would recommend this place to anyone.
YBENORMAL
Great little place and extremely popular. When we got there the line was down the street and was still just as long when we left. We had the sampler and jambalaya. Everything was very good and well worth the wait. Staff was very nice and helpful. We also had the crab cake which isn't on the menu but is very good and should be on the menu. My only complaint was no sweet tea. Lol
Kim Mascarenhas
Appetizers are great here. They make a fantastic crab cake ( which strangely isn't on the menu and you have to request ) and the boudin was also great. We tried the sampler which had small servings of jambalaya , shrimp creole and crawfish etouffe which were all , to my dismay, very bland and needed serious spicing! Try their bloody Mary and daiquiri, although they have a good wine collection too.
Haley
My coworker and I got sick all night after eating here. Atmosphere was wonderful and the food was okay. Wine was not good. Prices were reasonable.
Lilsweetie
Service was amazing! Attentive, patient and very friendly. <br/>We tried both the chicken andouille gumbo and the seafood gumbo. I loved the former, my husband liked the latter. Both were delicious and they didn't skimp on ingredients!<br/>The crawfish etouffée was pretty good. First time I have tried this dish, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but once again, the seafood was generous and it was well seasoned.<br/>Both our desserts - chocolate brownie pie and bread pudding with whiskey sauce were amazing. The chocolate one is dense, rich and perfectly paired with vanilla ice cream. The whiskey sauce is strong and a perfect complement to the cinnamonny, apple-raisin goodness of the bread pudding.<br/>We sat by a New Orleans local who has been a regular here for years and I understand why now, after the great experience we had.
Winslow
A 1 because there is no zero. After 30 minutes for soup gumbo, which never came... 2 rats went up the stairs Yes Rats, with the beady little eyes and the long tail... So I can't really say much about the food!!! So if I get back to NOLA I won't be back here!!!
Nom Nom Cakes
I was hyped to get to New Orleans just to try a bowl of authentic gumbo. Many people suggested this place, so I listened. It was okay. I was a bit disappointed. The gumbo was hot, hearty, had flavor, but was nothing spectacular, especially after flying to get it. I'd look for other gumbo spots before spending your money here.
Patty Campbell
service very good and fast.<br/>food not overpriced.really enjoyed it. food all great! we had jambalaya, spinach and artichoke dip, crab cakes, chicken gumbo...will go back for sure!!!!
Jamsnola1
One of the best gumbos in the city of gumbo. Atmosphere is classic NOLA, margaritas are to die for..esp with the right bartender, ask for extra fresh lime instead of mix. We get them to go, thats how good they are. The bread is awesome, you will ask for more...ask early and ask for more butter, you'll need it because you will want to swab up the juices of you're gumbo. Aligator sausage is great when they serve it. Service can be slow, but its a popular place.
The Shag In Fayetteville
Small, crowded, and loud.  The food was good yet not outstanding.  I was looking for the best gumbo in New Orleans and while this was good, it just didn't have the depth of flavor I look for in gumbo.  It wasn't bad by any stretch but it wasn't as good as I had let the hype lead me to believe that it would be.  I want to visit again and see if my first impressions were faulty.
Vicious Hillbilly
This was just ok... So much better at Felix's or Hobnobbers. Cold and bland. Better gumbo elsewhere. I was disappointed. Go to the others I mentioned. Not bad, just not good.
Ashley Byrd
This was my first time ever trying Gumbo and it was amazing! My husband and I stopped in for lunch in their beautiful mini courtyard. We both had the seafood and okra gumbo which was absolutely delicious! We also tried the boudin and the shrimp salad which were both very good. The staff are very friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back!
Arnold Newton
Living on the Gulf Coast, I am accustomed to very good Seafood gumbo, and other Cajun/ Creole food. I was expecting this place to serve great food. I' ll have to say that the food was just OK, nothing great. I had the Creole sampler with the crawfish ettoufee and my wife had the seafood gumbo. Both were amazingly mediocre. For someone that doesn't get good creole food often, it would probably be fine. If you have had good creole before, you will be disappointed. We were.
Keith B
Not as Good as Expected<br/><br/>I think that the Gumbo Shop is coasting a bit. While it continues to have a line out front in the evening, we found it to be only OK. It’s the kind of place that seems to only attract tourists. Nothing was bad but nothing was really good—especially after eating at several other way more interesting places in New Orleans. At least the prices weren’t too bad.<br/><br/>I got a traditional Sazerac cocktail to start with. It was, by far, the sweetest one that I had in town. I don’t usually do this, but I had to send it back to be remade.<br/><br/>Service was perfunctory and took a lot of waiving down to get something needed.<br/><br/>We got two of the tasting menus so that we could try lots of different things. Across the board, everything was “that’s fine” or “it was OK”. The favorite was probably the Crawfish Etouffee.<br/><br/>With so many wonderful restaurants in New Orleans, it would be a shame to try The Gumbo Shop and think that this is how New Orleans restaurants have to be.
Ashley Hansford
Gumbo shop<br/><br/>The Gumbo Shop, down an alley & just behind St. Louis Cathedral, is apparently regarded as a paragon of its titular dish to tourists, foodies, & natives alike. I stopped in b/t meals for a sample of their seafood specialty, & was very pleased w/ the service, the watermelon daiquiri, @rrthe perfect French bread , & the main attraction. It was rich & hearty, but the only outstanding feature was the pair of teeny crab claws sticking up from the milieu, as if inviting you in to the dark abyss. Well, just a small bowl really. And if you can procure enough meat to taste the crab from one of these Darwinian weapons w/o drawing your own blood, then a master crabber you must be. One big strike against the Gumbo Shop, for me, was the prevalence of flies in the dining area. There are several dining rooms indoors, but as w/ many older buildings in the Quarter, serving any purpose, there's an open central courtyard. All doors are left open, so in the summer, mid-afternoon heat w/ garbage piled up in every alley, all are lucky they're not much worse. I would return to TGS for the gumbo, but likely only after dark.
Jack Stevens
Gumbo with a single piece of shrimp about the size of a pinky finger nail & a crab claw. Complained to the waiter who spoke to the manager, who did not want to offer me a real meal. I returned it and just sat while the rest of my party ate. Also, they were having a roach problem along the inner wall, so no one was being seated there but maybe they have taken care of that problem. If I could give less than 1.0 I would.
Foodie2015
Stopped in here 2 days in a row for lunch on my last trip to New Orleans, and ordered the same dish both times. Their Shrimp Creole was so delicious that I just had to go back for more.
Dan Williamson
Fairly overpriced with entrees that were clearly made earlier and warmed up before being plated. I've had better jambalaya in California than I got here in the heart of the French Quarter.<br/><br/>On the plus side, the service was polite and attentive.
Kayti McMyermick
The Gumbo Shop has been one of my favorite restaurants in the Quarter thus far. Their gumbos are outstanding, the shrimp creole is one of the best I've ever had, and their desserts are fantastic as well.<br/>Service was ridiculously polite and quick.<br/>Would definitely go back again.
No Doggie Bag
The Gumbo Shop was a great place to stumble upon in the French Quarter before hearing Preservation Hall Brass Band change my whole perspective on the world (you must go). I really could not believe go delicious the crawfish étouffée tasted. I thought the Jambalaya would win my heart, but no. Not a chance. Get the étouffée!!
Livin The Good Life
The service was impeccable on this visit and we were lucky enough to have a table in the courtyard on a beautiful New Orleans evening. While the food itself was far from bad, I can't help but wish we had tried some place else that had spicier dishes. That being said, the trip to the Gumbo Shop did give us a chance to explore beautiul Jackson Square and take a horse drawn carriage historical tour of the French Quarter.
Heather Young-Nguyen
The Gumbo Shop is always busy but somehow I've never had to wait for a table. <br/><br/>Service was fast and efficient. We started out with a crab cake with creamy shrimp topping, which was really good. <br/><br/>It's my birthday so I treated myself to the complete creole dinner: shrimp okra gumbo, crawfish étouffée, creole creamed spinach, and a praline sundae. I was especially partial to the warm, crusty, soft French bread that comes out with dinner. My wife had blackened chicken, garlic mashed potatoes and creole creamed spinach. We weren't impressed with the spinach but everything else was really good. We filled up on the bread before dinner so we ended up taking quite a bit of it home with us (perfect late night snack haha). <br/><br/>The bathroom had no toilet paper when I visited but I let the hostess know and she took care of it right away. I'd definitely love to visit again!
C S Peters
Wow, this is a great place! The food was wonderful and the service was even better. Our waiter, Micheal P. was spot on with his recommendations. Crab cakes- Banana daiquiris- alligator sausage... Several in our party ordered the special (Catfish St. Peter), and they loved it. The Crawfish and pasta in Tasso Cream sauce was everyones favorite. The shrimp creole was a close second. I would definitely go here again. No complaints at all!!!
Travis
I tried as many of the popular restaurants as I could during my stay here in the French Quarter. The Gumbo Shop ended up being my all-time favorite stop. They serve a traditional Creole menu and are located in the heart of the French Quarter. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and have a online shop that you can order many of their food items from. The Gumbo here is amazing. I can see why it wins many awards. But my absolute favorite was the Red Beans and Rice with Smoked Sausage. I just couldn't get enough of it. It was so flavorful and it ended up being my favorite dish I ordered all week. I had pretty good service too. I plan on ordering their cookbook so I can try and reproduce some of these yummy dishes myself at home.
Sarah Mattix Arevalo
The Gumbo Shop is my fav gumbo restaurant to eat in the city. Please dont get it confused with the Gumbo pot on Decatur street they are two different restaurants.
Leo Shock
Either my palate has changed or their gumbo has declined. I had better gumbo at a cooking demonstration held at the New Orleans School of Cookie. Chef Kevin Belton prepared a superior gumbo in only 30 minutes. The bourbon bread pudding is still a winner!
Parsondamon
Delish. This was absolutely amazing, best gumbo and jambalaya I've ever had. Truly was the best meal we had in new orleans.
Joe Denney
Crawfish Etouffee. I had this dish more than 20 years ago when visiting a friend who lived in New Orleans at the time and it still lives in my memory. Absolutely wonderful.
Crystalwells99
Vegetarians don't bother unless you want mediocre. Veg gumbo tasted like grass with onions and all over priced. I sent it back. Whole menu is over priced. They don't even try when it comes to vegetarian foods.
Jill S-Davis
One of my top 3 places possibly my new #1!<br/>Great ambience and professional waiters w a very cozy feel. This place really a bargain gem! A MUST!
Chris R.
Great food at a reasonable price. Try the combo platter with red beans and rice, jambalaya, and shrimp creole. Gumbo was good too.

Authentic cajun food that is vegetarian friendly!. My husband and I popped in for dinner during Mardi Gras, and the place was very busy. However, that didn't stop Patty, our waitress, from taking the time to give some fabulous recommendations on dishes. My husband had the creole/cajun sampler platter, and I had the vegan gumbo and a vegan po' boy: both delicious. The food is not spicy, but it is flavorful, and there are many options for vegetarians. I originally ordered the vegetarian plate of the day, a beans and rice dish, but I soon learned that they had an additional pasta and po' boy option available for vegetarians, and since the latter is so hard to find, I had to go for it. The vegetarian po' boy is massive and filled with sliced/grilled zucchini, red pepper, and onion. I also had a bite of the husband's dessert- bread pudding with whiskey sauce: simply yummy. A final word: this is a tightly seated restaurant, so if you are claustrophobic, try to stop in during an off time period, but rest assured: there is a full bar to relax you as well. Margaritas were a big hit! We'll be recommending to everyone we know who visits the Big Easy.
Andrea Collins
I just went to New Orleans for the first time during this past week. My favorite meal I had during my stay was at the Gumbo Shop. I had the Crawfish Pasta with creamy Tasso sauce. It was wonderful. The food was decently priced and delicious. The servers were not the greatest and they all seemed like they were not enjoying their jobs, but it was during Mardi Gras... So it's understandable. I would definitely visit again.
Anita
Love this place!. I've eaten here since 1985. I go every time I get to New Orleans. It's delicious. The praline sundae is the best I've ever had. The fish over the creamed spinach is my favorite dish. I bring friends here and they always love it too. It's authentic New Orleans food. The wait staff is always friendly and helpful and make the experience relaxing and fun. The cocktails are always cold and delicious. And I love that you can order them to go in a plastic cup for walking around the quarter. Try it!
Ken.highley
Awesome food!!. We ate lunch there yesterday. We had the choice of indoor or outdoor seating. We chose indoor due to the light rain. Waitress was very nice and friendly, and explained the menu and the Specials. My co-worker had the blackened catfish fillet, with crab meat on top. I had the corn and crawfish chowder, and the jambalaya. Everything was delicious. And don't forget the Bread pudding! Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Would go back the next time we are in town for sure!

Great Red Beans and Rice. The staff are great, and if you are looking for the real deal when it comes to New Orleans cuisine, this is it. Sit in the outside courtyard if you can, the ambience is great.

Excellent Dining. I had the Okra Seafood Gumbo Appetizer, Combination Creole Platter with Creole Shrimp, Jambalaya, and Crawfish Etouffee with cream spinach and Chocolate Brownie. Each course was delicious, my least favorite was Shrimp Creole but that may be because I dont like red gravy/roux sauce. I highly recommend the Jambalaya if you aren't willing to try crawfish. The prices were very reasonable compared to other casual dining restaurants in the area. Excellent service and courtyard dining, well worth the price.
Paul S
Great lunch and the place lived up to the hype. Our server was very polite and attentive. The seafood and okra gumbo was delicious, though my wife's BBQ shrimp and pasta dish (which is like a creole scampi) was on a whole different level. We really enjoyed the alligator sausage appetizer as well. Bought some of their creole seasoning to bring back with us to the southwest.
Facebook User
Authentic!. I stopped in for lunch today because my friend wanted some authentic gumbo while we were here. I started with the crab cake (with the shrimp creole sauce) and she started with the BBQ shrimp. Both appetizers were incredible!<br/><br/>For my main course I went with the jambalaya and man I do not regret it. This was probably the best jambalaya I've ever had!<br/><br/>She had the seafood okra gumbo and raved about it all the way back to the hotel.<br/><br/>Our server, Patty, was fantastic. She was very friendly and made great suggestions for us. I will definitely be back on my next visit!

More than just gumbo.... Once more part of the southbound roadtrip I find myself passing through New Orleans, Louisiana. Of course, as a foodie you want to try what the area is known for. One of those things are gumbo and alligator. So as we walk around the French Quarter and after having finished the pilgrimage to Cafe du Monde, we ask a cashier as to what restaurant she suggests and she mentions The Gumbo shop. Without hesitation, we explore the French Quarter and find the place. The restaurant is conveniently located near the St. Louis church which is where we wanted to go after lunch. The entrance to the restaurant has its own charm as you walk through a short hallway, to the left you see an open air dining area and to the right you see a high ceiling spacious indoor dining are, you didn’t thing possible. Our waitress was very pleasant and friendly. We decide to go with dishes we thought “local” to the region not state or city mind you! , crab cake, gumbo, alligator sausage and a slice of pecan pie. I asked about the sausage and pecan pie and was told both were made in the restaurant.<br/><br/>As we soak up the ambiance, we are given bread and butter as a starter, and the bread itself seemed to be able hold its own in taste and texture as it was wonderfully crusty and warm. As our ordered dishes arrived, we ate our meals and could only say..it was delicious. The crabcake, sausage, and gumbo was tasty and the pecan pie was great. TIP: I suggest ordering pecan pie heated and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and although the crab cake is not on the menu, ask about it or I think they have it as part of their house special. Overall it was a great experience.

Fantastic! EAT HERE!!!. Great location, great service, and most importantly GREAT FOOD!!! Everything was reasonably priced and the portions were on point! Lovely covered terrace outside and a very spacious and well-decorated interior. The waitstaff was very friendly and very willing to entertain a bunch of Yankees like my family and myself.

Loved the Vegetarian Gumbo and Praline Sundae! With few vegetarian options in this awesome city, having a chance to have creole (vegetarian) gumbo makes the whole experience in NOLA much more authentic and enjoyable! Yum!!

Blah. Was encouraged by a few positive reviews but VERY underwhelmed by the food and service. The seafood gumbo was small and nondescript. My daughter's shrimp marinara came without shrimp. The waiter didn't notice. Jambalaya was two dry scoops of a quasi jambalaya- eatable but not memorable. Crawfish etouffee was very good. Nice atmosphere but nothing special about the food overall.

Gumbo!. Don't believe the haters. This was delicious!
Lilnav
Terrible service! Food was just okay and the waiter spilled gumbo all over my boyfriends dress shirt without even pausing to say sorry or help. Very small table and was hard to fit out meals and drinks on.
Jason
Are you kidding me the bread they serve with your meal is all chewey and microwaved. This ruined the dining experience. Please pay attention to detail and have quality crisp bread. I did have the blackened fish nuggets as well and they were awesome along with their exclusive dipping sauce. The spices were perfect.

Great food. Not only was the food very good here, but our service was extraordinarily outstanding. A very memorable experience.

Decent service, bland food. My family got Jambalaya, blackened chicken and blackened catfish. Jambalaya was mostly dirty rice with a few chunks of sausage and a couple of pieces of tomato. Both blackened items had no flavor beyond the source meats. We did have one order of chicken gumbo which was very good. Get your jambalaya at Cafe Mospero.

Awful Food and Service. My date called ahead to see if this restaurant was vegetarian friendly. He was told that it was and was given some menu options. <br/><br/>When we arrived, Brandon, our server told us that whoever we talked to on the phone LIED! He proceeded to tell me the two vegetarian dishes that could be made. Neither were on the menu. I ordered the vegetarian gumbo and it was awful. It had no taste to it. No salt, pepper, garlic, thyme, paprika, cumin, parsley, anything!!!! The previous was just for effect but seriously, no seasoning whatsoever. <br/><br/>Brandon was awful too. He did not offer any suggestions or dishes I could order instead of the gumbo. Instead, he says "you gotta doctor it up. Put some of this hot sauce on it." SMH. <br/><br/>Never again!
Donato
If you go here just order from the menu. Do not let your server(Brandon) talk you into a "special". He spoke to us so fast and was so hard to understand that I asked him twice to repeat his offer. <br/>So I heard it three times and understood we would get six dishes for $14.00. Well, we got six dishes for $32.00 and an incredulous response and a very clear explanation of what we had been offered.<br/>Now, quality of the food; you get lots of white rice with different sauces(soups) poured over them. They taste fine but really Zaterains quality, nothing more.<br/>I wouldn't go back.<br/> One of New Orleans tourist rip off places in my humble opinion.

Wonderful meal. W<br/>We went during Mardi Gras 2014 and had a wonderful meal. m<br/>My partner had the Blacked Tuna and I had the Seafood Okra Gumbo, Creole Combo and Garlic Mashed Potatoes. The .Chocolate Brownie was excellent!
Gregory J. Griffin
Gumbo was excellent and the bread pudding was delicious! Nice staff and great ambiance/decor. Recommended.

Good food, good atmosphere, great prices. <br/><br/>This is a great restaurant, the food is delicious, with very generous portion sizes. The staff is very helpful and nice, they all get along and act like family, which comes out in the service and feel of this restaurant. <br/><br/>Drinks are a bit pricey, but they are really strong, and let's face it you don't come here to drink, it's the food that's the real star.

Good Enough to Travel from DFW just for the Gumbo. Best Gumbo at the best prices in town. Small and quaint but reasonably good service. Tight quarters as they have maximized the number of tables. Really apparent this trip because it was raining and their courtyard was closed. Got the Chicken and Andouis Sausage Gumbo adding the appropriate amount of the house Garlic Hot Sauce and didn't leave a speck in the bowl. I also had the Red Beans and Rice with Smoked Sausage and it was phenominal with nearly a pound of the perfectly spiced and smoked sausage along with well cooked and silky smooth beans and well cooked rice equals ambrosia. I asked how much the Garlic Hot Sauce was and the manager had the waiter give me the sauce to take home for free. This has been and always will be our first stop whenever we are within 300 miles of NOLA. Best value in the French Quarter.

Great First Experience with Creole Cuisine. I love these passageways that open to beautiful courtyards and even better when its a good restaurant. Our friends brought us here to try traditional creole cooking and it was wonderful. My husband began his meal with seafood okra gumbo followed by a crawfish pasta. The gumbo was large and the warm break that accompanied it was quick devoured. The pasta sauce was rich and contained lots of crayfish. I tried the special - blackened catfish stuffed with crab meat and covered in shrimp sauce (how could anyone pass on that option?) with collard greens on the side. It was delicious! The fish would wonderfully cooked, the crab stuffing was generous and the shrimp sauce was just enough to accent the meal. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and my husband his. I would definitely recommend this place and return for another meal.

In New Orleans there are so many choices for good food, great atmosphere and excellent service. This place had very little of any of these things. Food was blah, drinks were common and our server seemed like he'd rather be doing anything other than waiting on us. Spend your money and time elsewhere.
John Cicala
Possibly the blandest meal I've ever eaten; they have abandoned what made them great and taken out any hint of flavor and seasoning in their dishes. We had the chicken/andouille gumbo and their étouffée. Tasted like nursing home food. French market cafe the night before was incredible however. Go there instead.
Deebee
Great Lunch. The shrimp po boy was different but excellent. The jambalaya was excellent also. The blackened chicken salad came with a pecan vinagrette which was wonderful. The place could of used some music. Overall would go back.
James Cole
Good feed, but smaller portions. The gumbo shop was a very nice place to eat. But every plate except for the pecan brownie dessert (which was utterly exceptional) was a bit on the meager side for my personal gastronomic propensity. Even the cocktails were a little on the small side. The food itself was delicious and the service was great. They also cater well for vegetarians which was very much appreciated. Just note though that if you're really hungry and used to US portion sizes you might have to spend a little more to fill up than you bargained for.

Our favorite Gumbo in NOLA!
Andrew
New Orleans Classic. This past week I was in New Orleans for a conference. After trying a few different restaurants throughout the week, I have been convinced that New Orleans is my new favorite “restaurant city” or “favorite city to go to restaurants.” There are a few staples in the New Orleans diet, but each restaurant is unique in its own right. There is spicy food, seafood, creole food, and french food, but if I had to sum up New Orleans cuisine in one word it would be flavorful.<br/><br/>The first night I was in New Orleans our group went to the Gumbo Shop. The Gumbo Shop is located in the French Quarter and is well known for its creole food. We stopped in on a Monday night and the place was happenin. Our group of eleven was seated in a back room that had an older New Orleans vibe to it. You could feel the energy in the restaurant and made for a pleasant first evening in the city.<br/><br/>Trying to decide on a dish was a difficult task as many of the options looked really good. Personally, I am partial to seafood, so I knew I had to start my week off right by ordering some fish. After a few minutes of looking at the menu I decided on the Fresh Fish Florentine - Catfish served with spinach covered in a warm hollandaise sauce with a lemon garnish on the side. Since this was my first meal in New Orleans, I had high expectations going in and this particular dish delivered in the clutch. The flavors mixed beautifully and the hollandaise sauce was particularly flavorful. Our table was also provided with several loaves of fresh bread, which added a nice touch. Others at the table ordered things like crawfish, red beans and rice, gumbo, and jambalaya. I think everyone was pretty satisfied with the food and the service was excellent.<br/><br/>One thing I would like to point out is that New Orleans has some of the nicest people you will ever meet. This makes the restaurant experience even better because you can expect quality service. Our group went to over a dozen restaurants and not once did we receive poor service (just a side note on New Orleans in general). As for the Gumbo Shop, you can expect great food, amazing service, and a pleasant atmosphere. Definitely check it out if you find yourself in the French Quarter!

Very yummy food! Service was not great.

Great place to try NOLA specialties. We were not going to eat there, but we randomly asked a guy to take our photo & he recommended this traditional restaurant. We are very happy that we ended up going there. <br/>The food was great & reasonably priced compared to other restaurants! We got fresh bread to start with, then I had seafood gumbo & my husband had jambalaya!!! They were deelish!<br/>We were sitting in the patio area - it was really cute. Our server was nice too.<br/>We would go back there again.
Kmart
Hit the spot. Back in NOLA for the weekend, we decided to stop by the Gumbo Shop because they were the only place without a long line at 11 AM on Sunday. It was a good choice. I ordered a bowl of seafood gumbo, a shrimp po-boy and a Cajun bloody mary. The rest of my party ordered various things and they really enjoyed them when it was all said and done. The gumbo came out first and it was rather bland. Some hot sauce added to it spiced it up some. The French bread was awesome with it, however. The bloody mary was excellent and much needed that morning. My po-boy didn't show with the rest of the meal and the waitress felt terrible about it. When it came out, she included a cup of beef gumbo on the house. That turned out to be my favorite part of the meal. All-in-all, we had a great experience at the Gumbo Shop and I could see myself returning next trip.
Michael Hillis
Creole food at it's best! Food is classic New Orleans comfort food in every bite. Service is above and beyond! It's no wonder The Gumbo Shop has been a New Orleans Landmark since 1945!
Niki
Vegan/Vegetarian Friendly!. Yay! Thanks for catering to vegans and vegetarians that were born and raised here! When I saw the review below I tried your vegetarian dish of the day which was black beans and rice (so yummy) and also sampled your vegan gumbo (which was also great)! I'll def be returning soon :)
Amalakoe
Ask for the vegan gumbo!. Not advertised, but extremely tasty is the vegan gumbo. their menu features daily vegetarian options but a nice server brought me a sample of vegan gumbo. It was so tasty we went back the next night for a whole bowl of it! the perfect thing to warm you up after a haunting ghost tour of the french quarter.
Don
Great gumbo. The gumbo was some of the best I ever had in New Orleans
Maria Velado Degwitz
We were seated quickly & the service was excellent - thanks Babette! We had the BBQ shrimp, chicken espagnole & catfish florentine. Everything was served nice & hot. The creamed spinach had just enough nutmeg. Bread was good. Would recommend.

Sad. Gumbo shop has been a must stop on our list when visiting for years so of course we went for dinner. It seems to have lost its luster since our last visit. I orderd the sampler, not one thing on my plate was hot, barely warm. The flavors just seem to have been better in years past. The food was slopped on the plate and reminded me of a bad plate of mexican food. (like cold refried beans and spanish rice) To many other choices to stop here again.
Tim Srock
Greens were best ever. Gumbo was great.
Larryf
Ok gumbo. I went there for the Seafood Gumbo, it was just OK, I've had much better in California! The gumbo was bland and not flavorable, i had to add hot sauce to make it just ok. The service however was awesome, friendly and quick. The bread was fresh and crust was crispy.
Rose
Not sure. Feeling kind of ambivalent about our meal there. It wasn't disgusting, but it wasn't a big thrill either. Had the crawfish etoufee, while my partner had some kind of pasta. We ended up trading as the crawfish tasted a bit "fishy" to me. Waiter was a little fast with everything. Just a fair experience in a city with lots of options.
Brandy Rodgers Booth
Loved it! Great service, great atmosphere, and great food. I lived the étouffée. The jambalaya was could but I can't get over the étouffée. I wish I was there eating done now!
FrankL
Just ate there. My wife and I split the 24.99 sample meal. We had chicken andouille gumbo, the combo platter(beans and rice, shrimp creole, and jambalaya) mocque choux corn, and bread pudding. We are from New Orleans and I still say that this is the best shrimp creole I've ever had. Everything else was excellent as well, but the shrimp creole is better than anyone in my family makes (and we are serious cookers). I highly recommend this sampler to anyone curious about how these dishes should taste. So many places have mutated the recipes to something different. This is how Grandmaw makes it!
Jeff
Total Crap!. My girl and were visiting New Orleans and came across the Gumbo Shop with a friend on a slow December day...12/11/12. It's in a tourist area so I expected the inflated prices and potential marginal food quality but they surpassed my expectations! Gumbo was good and sort of fresh as was the bread! Alligator sausage was dry, old and flavorless. Red Beans and Rice were good but my Jambalaya was at least three days old, clumpy and hard and had a stale taste to it...and no shrimp or chicken in it. Her Etouffe was downright disgusting....at least three days old and microwaved.Typically that type of poor quality would warrant me calling a manager to the table but it was our vacation and didn't want the negative vibe....so here i am! The total with two beers was $77.00 and the waitor "Jerry" asked if we could tip in cash since they get paid every two weeks. I still tipped 20% but am kicking myself for that. Oh well, hope this helps.

Consistently hits the spot year after year. Been going to The Gumbo Shop for at least 17 years, and my last visit was probably my best. Atmosphere is cozy, friendly, classic New Orleans. Our server was helpful and knowledgeable. He kept imitating Schwarzenegger's "Get to the chopper" but he said "Get to the kitchen"--hilarious. Had hot apple cider w/ a cinnamon stick, Christmas in a cup; tasted and smelled divine. I ordered the house pecan vinaigrette for a side salad; no other way to describe it except pecan pie filling made into a vinaigrette--wickedly delicious. I always get seafood and okra gumbo and it is always delightful, with French bread and butter. And finally we go home in a food coma.
Jake
Good food - loud staff. Great and flavorful gumbos. The best shrimp creole I have ever tasted. Velvety smooth red sauce with incredibly rich shrimp flavor. Great New Orleans feel in the heart of Quarter. Decent values to locals and tourists alike. Only issue here is staffing. Kitchen was constantly yelling at each other and it was like a PA system at your table. Service was slow and lacking and employees hanging out in the closed section were also loud and intrusive of the dining experience.
Alyssa P Martinez
LOVED THIS PLACE!! It's nice and quiet which was a good break from<br/>the city. Prices are reasonable and portions are big. The food itself is amazing and they get their shrimp in everyday so it's nice and fresh and never over cooked. Come here! You can even take some home frozen!
Jim G.
TRY THE CREOLE COMBO PLATTER. When in New Orleans, you have to have three dishes to say you have had Cajun/creole cuisine. They are jambalaya, shrimp creole and red beans with rice. The creole combo platter includes all three and each was nicely prepared and presented. They were all tasty and not overpoweringly spicy, so I really did not have a favorite.
Ricardo Ibarra
I LOVED the andouille gumbo and boudin appetizer. If you're looking for authentic creole cooking in a classic NoLa restaurant, this is it.
Ben
Was good but not "wow" ... food was well presented but nothing I would write home about. service was good and atmosphere was pleasant.
Jeanette
Decent, but nothing realy special. We ordered redbeans/rice and a seafood gumbo...neither of which was outstanding. Service was fast and professional.
Gristle
My favorite lunch of the week. While in NOLA, I had lunch here. Po boy and gumbo. This place was really good, the staff were friendly and because it's on a side street it wasn't as busy as other places. The only down side was the washrooms, an outhouse is a step up.
CoutureChef
Tasty food and good atmosphere, adequate for a nice breakfast with friends
Ben Heusted
Don't waste your time and money at this tourist trap. I've had far better "cajun" food in Kansas City than this place. Staff was friendly though.
Jbird
Excellent service. Like most of NO-bathroom kind of dodgy. Crawfish etouffe is adequate. NO BBQ shrimp on linguine rocks although quite spicy.

TOURIST TRAP. A friend of mine was in town and wanted to eat gumbo. Unfortunately, he's allergic to shellfish, so we were limited to a place that served chicken and andouille gumbo. After doing some research and talking to some co-workers, it appeared that Gumbo Shop was the best option. In fact, Gambit rated it as the best restaurant for chicken and andouille gumbo.<br/><br/>I was initially hesitant to eat here due to its location (and therefore likely being a tourist trap). I could not have been more correct. After checking out the menu, we ordered the grilled boudin as an appetizer, and it was pretty good. For dinner, my friend ordered the chicken and andouille gumbo, and I ordered the seafood and okra gumbo. However, the waitress told me to order the chicken and andouille gumbo because the seafood gumbo was not good that day (that should have been my clue to leave). The next clue was that there was no Tabasco sauce in the restaurant. The only hot sauce had Gumbo's Shop's label on it (and it was awful).<br/><br/>The gumbo was awful. It was very bland, and there was hardly any chicken and andouille in it. Unfortunately, many tourists probably think that it's pretty good, as my friend did. I had no choice but to tell him that it was horrible.<br/><br/>To top it off, the waitress asked if we wanted dessert and suggested the praline (PRAY-leen) sundae. Having lived in New Orleans for most of my life, it's pronounce PRAH-line. That's like calling crawfish, crayfish.<br/><br/>Gumbo Shop is a tourist trap, and I will never go back. There's a reason why I had never eaten there before.
Michelle Nelson
Mmmmmmmmm mmmmmmm mmmmmm just like aunt jemima used to make it lowrdy lowrty soo good.....masta smith would love this place
Josir
AWFUL blackened chicken. Not blackened at all. Chunks of fat and tasteless. My only bad meal in New Orleans ever. So sad.
Frederic
Gumbo is superb Jamabalya is colored rice barely seasoned Crayfish étouffée is really tasty Good service
Todd Bannon
Great spot to stop for lunch close to everything. Eat in the courtyard if there is room.

French Quarter Favorite. The gumbo is delicious. Yes it is a tourist favorite and so the prices may be a bit high for somethings but overall great food red beans and rice, gumbo, jambalaya, and bread pudding. For visitors who want a taste of classic staples of cajon creole foods New Orleans is famous for this is a nice accessible place to stop.
Libby
Consistently good. I recommend it to all friends who visit French Quarter.
Justin
Vary good don't pass this one up

Visited here to get the authentic Cajun experience. My family ordered the pasta in white sauce with the crawfish and the blackened catfish with shrimp criole. I ordered the sampler platter for 13 dollars. Firstly it was not a large portion ( and there are little to no vegetables on the menu unless you want to pay 5 dollars for a side) it was very bland and I found myself sprinkling a lot of seasoning on it to spice it up. However that could not mask the taste of mud especially in my shrimp creole. Tasted like river water. The étouffée was pretty good and the jumbalaya was yummy but I had the taste of heavy mud in my mouth the whole night. The pasta dish my brother and mother ordered was delicious and the blackened catfish my father got was light and yummy and the creole he got wasn't muddy tasting at all. Maybe I got a bad batch or maybe I just can't appreciate true Cajun.
We Travel For Good Food
Always good. Everything we had was delicious and savory. The gumbo is a meal unto itself.
Southern Foodie
Unreal. $24 three course meal is off the hook.
Soursister
My little family of 4 ate here last night. We were sat immediately and had a really nice waiter! The shrimp creole was great! I also had a banana daiquiri...probably the best I'd ever had! Great hurricane too. The chicken and sausage gumbo was very favorable with a dark roux (the way we coonasses at home cook it). My 8 year old son ate the whole bowl! Great atmosphere.
TooPicky
NOT GUMBO. This is not gumbo -- it is more like gravy. People in New Orleans do not know what good gumbo is -- you got to go to cajun country to get good gumbo. <br/><br/>IMHO
Missy
Great service and food!! My favorite is the Chicken Parmesean poboy !!!!!!!
Lynne
The Crawfish Etoufee was delicious, as was the bread pudding. The gumbo was very flavorful, but I have to say that the crawfish was the best I've had in the Quarter.
James Goodman
Quaint little place. Awesome find in the Quarter. The courtyard here is very intimate, very nice. Much more than we expected. We were seated immediately on a small two top in the courtyard. The seating is very cramped as though they got as many tables and chairs as possible into the little space but it was great. Our server outlined our specials and I immediately eyed the Chicken Espagnole with rice. A half chicken smothered in an amazing sauce. The chicken was juicy and full of flavor. The rice was cooked perfectly and the accompanying turnip green were a wonderful surprise. My girlfriend had a blackened catfish which she thoroughly enjoyed and then it was time for dessert. We had the bread pudding and I paired it with a grand marnier. We enjoyed the perfect weather in the courtyard. Our server Catherine took really good care of us. It was a great dinner date.
Carman
We are locals and the wife and I have not eaten here in many years. We were walking by and decided to go in and get a bite to eat. The gumbo was not Good. Although it wasn't spicy there is plenty of stuff on the table to adjust the seasoning. My wife had the crabcake for appetizer and liked it. Lots of crab in it. I ordered the combo with shrimp etoufee jambalaya and red beans and I thought it was very good. The wife has the shrimp and corn bisque which was the special and although the waitress said nothing was spicy the chef that night had spiced it up and it was just right when I tasted it but too hot for the wife although she still liked it. Not bad at all and reasonably priced
Mia
The chairs were covered with caked on dirt or sauce. I was afraid to eat the food but everyone seemed to enjoy it. Dirty tables make me wonder how clean the kitchen is?
Mr Wonderful
I Agree. Touristy, but Worth It. This is the place you have to take neophytes to NOLA for a yummy sampler of New Orleans food. It's also the place to go when no one can make their mind up on where to go. Food has always been good; the service is friendly, if not always fast. This is a staple.
Brad Cecil
Where's the heat?. Ate there last night and was disappointed by the blandness of the food. If you want seasoning, ya gotta put it on yourself from the bottles of hot sauce on the table. The waitress told me they have to make the food bland for the busloads of old incontinent tourists that shuffle through there for a packaged NOLA experience. What a shame! Dishes had almost all of the right stuff -- just needed a little heat.
Gregory Moore
Definitely a good spot...will be back!. The Gumbo Shop was my final place to eat this Saturday and it was by far a great experience.<br/><br/>The service was great and the seafood gumbo and the chicken and sausage gumbo were superb.<br/><br/>We ordered the special cajun combination dinner which had jambalaya, crawfish ettufee and shrimp ettufee.<br/><br/>While my girlfriend did not like the crawfish ettufee, we both agreed that the gumbos and the shrimp ettufee and jambalaya was well worth the price of admission.<br/><br/>Would definitely go back again.
The Dixie Dish
So Good.... When visiting New Orleans, this is one of my top stops. They have a great location and menu. I suggest the gumbo or the crawfish etoufee!
Kimber Cleereman
Great Jambalaya. It was my first time in New Orleans and after viewing the mouth watering pictures on Urban Spoon, I decided to check this pace out. Even though they are known for their gumbo, I went with the Jambalaya which was fan-friggin-tastic. I also paired it with an Abita amber ale which was also phenomenal. In addition, every meal is served with warm french french bread.....Great additive to the overall meal.
Ilovefood.
The name is gumbo shop you would think the gumbo would be the best you ever taste! But IT'S NOT! It was so plain. Zattaran's gumbo in abox taste better than theirs! Dont waste y'all money!!!
Music Lover
Nice Value. Walking around the Quarter, I've always been intrigued by this place by looking through its window, but had never gotten around to trying it. Finally did the other night and discovered it was unlike what I expected. The murals on the wall are beautiful and very New Orleans-esque. The place is very tightly packed and thus very loud, so if you're looking for a quiet, romantic dinner, maybe check out some other place. However, if you're looking for a nice sampling of typical local dishes at a so-so level but good price, this is a good place to come to. The hostesses that evening were very friendly, but our waiter was not very attentive and a pretty sarcastic guy. All in all, I'd give it another whirl.
Fernwoodmama
Mixed. I ordered the seafood okra gumbo, which was kinda bland. One of my companions enjoyed their food, however, so I suggest asking the server for a recommendation. My other friend ordered the vegetarian red beans and rice which was very bland (however, at least they offer a veggie option!). The line up is long but we got in quickly anyway so don't be turned off by the long line up. The decor needs some sprucing up, but the service was very good (why is there acoustic ceiling tiles in a successful French Quarter restaurant?). For better food, try Oceana's.
Jeff
Fast, friendly service with good gumbo. Can't go wrong with a stop at the gumbo shop!
Kevin J. Booker
Had the combo; shrimp creole, jambalaya, red beans and rice. Really good and very reasonable pricing.
Erik The Blonde
Shrimp Po Boy rocks. Don't believe the negative remarks here or anywhere else, I go here every time I am in New Orleans and I always get a good meal for a very reasonable price. The Po Boy is a big piece of French bread, they dig out the bread and fill it with seasoned shrimp and sauce and it's just excellent. Service is great, always a busy place, usually wait 10 minutes or so. It is on St. Peter about a block south of Bourbon on your way to Jackson Sq.
Ryan
Fantastic Creole cuisine.
Kabir
Brought a friend from out of the country here.... The experience was close to perfect and I'm not really that big on 'touristy' places, but I understand their purpose, and even though I'm not from here myself, I thought it was perfect timing for me to go. It was a terribly cold day, and walking around the quarter, no idea where or what to eat, my gf suggests the Gumbo Shop. We sit, and the server tells us that the special drink of the evening, because of the severe weather is a hot rum drink (I had no idea what it was or what it was mixed with), with a cinnamon stick in it. This thing was glorious. This is one of those drinks I will never forget, because if winter has a remedy, it was that drink. <br/><br/>The food? Just classic creole, we tried the Jambalaya, and the Gumbo, and it tasted great, just add some hot sauce and walla! Extremely friendly service, and from judging the food on other tables (I know, I know, this can be rude), I would like to go there again just to try their creole pasta dish which looked amazing.
Aaron Gaertner
Great service and old school New Orleans cuisine. Prices are fare and cocktail are good value.
Bryce Gorman
Not a local hangout for a reason. The Gumbo Shop is very popular with tourists, but in truth it is for the same reason tourists like New York Pizza at almost any location. They're not used to gumbo. My girlfriend's family wanted to go, and the gumbo was not the quality that my family can make at home, let alone the quality of better restaurants in New Orleans. <br/>You will pay more for their food than you really should. For the same price, you can try excellent gumbo at any of the Brennan family restaurants in the city. My recommendation is Commander's Palace, but if you want to stay in the French Quarter, Palace Cafe is fine as well.<br/>One caveat, though, is their vegetarian gumbo. If you do not eat meat or fish, this is your best bet. <br/>The service here was standard.

Horrible service and awful food!!!
Prop Joe Esq.
Touristy. But still good. They have great gumbo. Don't like the shrimp creole, but I don't like it anywhere else either.
Marktwohey
Gumbo Shop.. Save your money folx. This is a tourist trap with NO flavor. I've tried many of their dishes and was VERY disappointed with everything. The flavor of New Orleans is just not there. Seek out other places.........
Mrteapot
Gumbo Shop. Gumbo, yum. Barbecue shrimp, yum. Pecan pie a la mode, yum. <br/>Total= yum, yum, yum.
Mel Daniels
Service great! Food not so good! Blackened fish was just burnt and crap cake worst I ever had. Gumbo was pretty good. Maybe just picked wrong dish. Wasn't satisfied at all.
GoodnessGracious
Dirty. Slow service and dirty. Went through 3 sets of silverware trying to find one without food.
R.I.P. Uncle Jones BBQ
Affordable in the French Quarter. I chose this place based on the reviews here and I was not disappointed. We came in for lunch and had a seat in the courtyard. I can't remember what name they gave it, but what I had was basically a half chicken with a couple sides. Pretty good. Also cheaper compared to other places.

Good Gumbo!. After a terrible meal at Pere Antoine, Gumbo Shop was SO good! I asked the waitress so many questions about the recipes that she brought me their cook book to look at. I used their gumbo recipe (online) to make turkey andouille gumbo after Thanksgiving, and I'll never go back to my old recipe. My my my, good place to eat! I think I'll order the cook book too.

Looks and sounds like tourist trap but isn't. Of all the places in the Quarter, if you would have asked me to name a tourist trap, I'd name it Gumbo Shop. On the outside I'd have a big wood sign with a gumbo pot filled with Creole delicacies. And if I were to warn you of such a place, I'd look at the surface of Gumbo Shop and say watch out!<br/><br/>But the Gumbo Shop is very good. The last time I ate here in Sept 09 I got the fried shrimp platter. There were about a dozen very plump and perfectly fried Gulf shrimp waiting for me to devour them. It was about $15, which was a little high, but those are Quarter prices and for Quarter options, it was actually a good deal as ACME wouldn't have as good shrimp and is more. Deanies is good, but you wouldn't get as many and they wouldn't be as big.<br/><br/>I haven't had anything else, but I can give my seal of approval for the fried shrimp platter.

Well...... Very attentive staff. Lots of staff. The restaurant looks run-downed and has quite dirty floor. I ordered Jambalaya and my bf had Chicken Gumbo. The rice was a bit too soggy and a bit bland... (i was expecting Jambalaya to be more spicy). Though the Chicken Gumbo is excellent!

I LOVE the gumbo here. With so many places that offer gumbo in the quarter - this truly is the best out there. It is flavorful with a dark roux and spicy kick. The Gumbo Shop hot sauce on the table is a great addition to the gumbo as well.<br/><br/>The atmosphere here is spectacular. With old murals on the inside and beautiful courtyards, every table has something special to look at.<br/><br/>As other mentioned, yes the lines can be long at times but it is worth it. If you'd like to avoid the lines head in there around 3 pm. No lines at all for my family and I on a Saturday afternoon.

Lovely. Definitely loved this place!!! My friend and I went there after reading the positive reviews. Loved the atmosphere. **FOOD WAS AWESOME!!!!** I had the Penne Pasta with Tasso sauce. So damn good. My friend had the some kind of platter with gumbo, red beans and rice and shimp creole. She loooovvved it. Her Hurricane was well made too. Our waitress, Lisa, was so nice and took good care of us. We sat in the patio and it was so nice. Totally wished I could go back.

What's up with n.o. I don't know....my steak was way over cooked for med., it was xwell. dessert was really good, but it has been so ordinary these days to eat downtown and walk away feeling like your home area thinks you are from outa state. it amazes me that people still want to eat here in our new orleans. some of our food that we call real n.o. or cajun is just a bunch of the same seasonings from sysco. what happen to our fresh tasting seafoods...and i am speaking even before the bp erruption. i do not go to coplands because everthing tastes the same...feeling that way towards downtown too. trying to get a steak cooked less then well is challenging too, even at high end rest.

Great service. The best redfish I've ever had. Gumbos are full flavored with the right amount of heat. A basket of their custom blended spices and sauces along with hot sauce are on every table. The bread is classic NO...crunchy crust with fluffy centers. And refilled without asking. Great turnip greens; smoky but still with a bite. Abita turbo dog on tap and the best bread pudding for miles completed an excellent dinner.
The Mom
Great food, especially the gumbo. Bad service - extremely slow. This may have been our waiter - bad.

If you're going there, you have to try the Gumbo. I mean really. I come here every visit and I am alway satisfied. I am picky about Gumbo. It should be dark and somewhat thick, not see though and watery. They do it right. Other than the Gumbo though I cant really say if there is anything else that stands out. Maybe I'll try something else next time. Nah

Used to be a favorite.... We used to take everyone here when we hit the Quarter with friends. Last time, though. I think they changed chefs. The food last time terrible for everyone. Not even close to the quality we had in the past. The only thing close to the yummy goodness was the seafood gumbo, but even that has gone downhill. Embarrassing after we built the place up to our visiting friends.
Misspris
I had the seafood gumbo which was good. For an appetizer I had alligator sausage now that was awesome- full of flavor :) staff was friendly and atmosphere was comfortable and more on the quiet side compared to other restuarants in that area

Beyond Awesome!. My husband and I were newbies to New Orleans and cajun/creole food beyond what you buy in a box and make yourself in the midwest. We wanted to go where the locals go, so our hotel manager recommended them (along with Urbanspoon). My husband had the chicken gumbo, which was good, and I had the combination platter with crawfish ettoufe(?) with jambalaya and shrimp creole. The jambalay and shrimp creole was good, but the crawfish ettoufe was spectacular! I am so glad I ditched the comfort zone for this dish!
Food Fiend
OK gumbo at a reasonable price. Service was OK. Ordered some boudin and the waitress couldn't even tell me if it was boudin blanc or noir, she just said it was brown! My chicken and sausage gumbo was good but it just didn't do it for me. It was a nice average lunch at a very reasonable price.
Finicky Foodie
Enjoyed this NOLA spot. You get all the feel of New Orleans in the restaurant, especially if you dine in the outdoor patio. Food was delicious!
Martin Chalk
The Gumbo soup and Jambalaya were both excellent and were more European sized than often in the States. Service was good and friendly, without being intrusive
Jeremy Carpenter
Was pretty good.. For the price this was pretty good. Although my girlfriend asked for a shrimp dish and they brought her chicken, it still tasted good. The gumbo was fantastic.

What's a PO-BOY??. I uttered this as we entered our first restaurant after landing in NOLA. Being assured my my wife that I would love it, we ordered the Hot Roast Beef PO-BOY. It arrived, and hand-to-my-heart, was the best sammich I've ever had! It is my No. 1 place to eat when I get to go back for a honest to goodness PO-BOY! Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Very nice boudin & creole mustard. Good chicken & andouille gumbo. Reasonable prices.

Best Gumbo in town!. You must try the gumbo. It's mouth watering good!

Great food...great service. Seafood Gumbo and Crawfish Ettoufee excellent

Good Gumbo, So-So Service. I had the Chicken and Andouille Gumbo and it was really good. The roux was dark and gave the dish some depth of flavor. <br/><br/>The service on the other hand was less than average. The waiter seemed annoyed when my wife asked for a side salad (not on the menu). He brought us each a salad, even though I hadn't ordered one. I went ahead and ate it rather than irritate the waiter even more. <br/>I'd definitely go back, but hope I don't get the same waiter next time.
Jess
Very good!. We went on easter sunday and it was pretty busy. service was a bit slow but that was fine with us because we were in no rush at all. the bloody mary was good and so was the fresh fruit daiquiri. gumbo is a MUST order. i had the crawfish pasta in a cream sauce and it was to die for. hubby had the 1/2 chicken in a mushroom sauce and he said it was pretty good.
Loux
Ya Ya. Started with a cup of seafood okra gumbo. The roux was dark, just the way I like it. I used the french bread to soak up every last spicy bite of it. The grilled boudin went really well with the creole mustard. I had the shrimp creole as my main and it was alright - could use a little more fire, so I added some tabasco. Finished dinner with the pecan pie. Definitely do it a la mode.<br/>The service was good and friendly. The server also brought extra bread without being asked. I noticed a section for vegetarians on the menu.<br/><br/>Returnability rating : 4 boomerangs

We took our kids to Gumbo Shop and must say we were not dissappointed! I had the jambalaya which was fantastic! My husband had the gumbo which was also excellent. I think my favorite had to be the Cajun bloody mary!
B Smith
My wife and I have been going to the Gumbo Shop on every trip to NOLA sine our honeymoon in 1992. We love the étouffée and shrimp po boy. One of my favorites.

Good, not great. The whole experience was "so so", including the food.
Moxieman
Fun place. Good food at a great price..you know your in new orleans when you try teir awesome gumbo and boudin. It is a good place to bring yor kids without breaking yor wallet.

Good, not great. There are so few decent restaurants in the FQ in this middle price range that it is hard to knock one of the few good ones. Food is good, though far from incredible....but by FQ standards it is very good for what you pay. And the food is good and consistent. Drinks are very nice and service adequate. As a lunch place in the FQ, I think it holds up extremely well. For dinner it is fun to bring a group, especially if they are from out of town and want to go to the Quarter but not spend a ton.
Ed Ruiz
Good food...so-so staff. I have been going to this place for years. I absolutely love their crawfish in tasso cream and their ettouffee. I do have to say that the last few times I've been there the hostess was difficult and rude to my friends whom I convinced to go. Still, the food is worth checking out.
Jonny
Delicious food but not hot enough, good value, SLOW service. I'd do it again.
Javier
This place is good. food was yummy although the their Gumbo wasn't as tasty as I hoped... (I'm still searching for that mythical best gumbo in town). Overall the experience was good.
Scott Robichaux
Great Lunch. This is a very good place to stop for a quick lunch while in the city
Angela
Nice staff but won't go there again. Food was all under seasoned . There are so many other places to go for the effort and money . However wait staff was great.
Lkh
This place is packed with people (mostly tourists, it seems) and you may have to wait for quite some time to get a table (we waited for 30 mins). But the food is very good for the price.
Laura Clapp Davidson
Tasty food, great drinks and fun waitstaff. Mom and i went on a rainy Saturday and had no wait. Mom wasn't wowed by the gumbo but I loved my red beans and rice.

Recommended. 9/10 point Review. Don't go for lunch. That is if I'm in town. I don't want the line to be too long. The very best gumbo in the world! One of the best spicy bloody mary's in the world. Atmosphere is small and cozy and location is perfect if you're in the quarter. Don't go here for perfection of service, fancy linens, or an unusually creative and artistically plated dining experience. Go when you are hungry, and you don't want to be disappointed and you aren't wearing your coat and tie. Unless, you are dying to sit outside, I wouldn't sit in the small courtyard, bathroom lines tend to form out there and sometimes the sewage smell can permeate through the air. I am the restaurant snob, so greasy spoons, diners, and the like aren't my thing, but I love this place. <br/>Service 6/10 (this seems harsh, but that's all you need here)<br/>Taste 9/10<br/>Plating 8/10<br/>Atmosphere 9/10<br/>Value 10/10<br/>Overall 9/10

Great Gumbo. This place was recommended by the front desk at our motel. The Gumbo was one of the best I have ever eaten. The fried alligator was not so great.
Nina Jones Morel
Great place for a nice tasty filling meal when you want to be in and out in an hour or hour and a half. The turnip greens are the best I've had. Nice on the courtyard. Good service.
Dr. Matt
Best Roast Beef PoBoy. While you might think this is the place to have great gumbo, you are wrong. It's OK. <br/><br/>But their Roast Beef Po-boy is out of this world. <br/><br/>Fun wait staff ready to give you their opinions. <br/><br/>This is a must in the Quarter
Santi
Decent. The food was decent, I've had better "authentic" New Orleans food. The bread pudding desert was very good.
Noel Howell
Awesome jambalaya. Close to river. Try the local amber beer.
Richard
I stopped in for lunch, and really enjoyed the crawfish étouffée. The service was quick and very friendly.
Bryan Moody
We ducked in while hunting for something quick and authentic. I was shocked at how fast we were seated on a busy Friday night! The food was incredibly good.
Jon Stevens
Must stop for lunch, but don't tell anyone.. The line usually moves pretty quickly, but it will be there every day for lunch. I usually don't like waiting in line in order to eat, especially in a place with so many great restaurants, but it is a travesty to visit New Orleans without Gumbo Shop for lunch. Service is friendly, but mediocre at best. Dining room and small courtyard is crowded and cramped. Great Prices and Great Food. Seafood Gumbo is the best, hands down, anywhere. Shrimp Remoulade salad is worth trying too.
Shaun F. Hedgepeth
Gumbo Shop. Gumbo Heaven!
Emily
AWFUL. It was suggested by a local in the french quarter, but it was awful food and HORRIBLE SERVICE.
Micky
Same old same old. They're not that great at the same old thing.
Alix
Gumbo gumbo and more gumbo. What can I say. Have been eating here since I am a little girl. Get that gumbo fix!
Shane Collins
Great Casual Place. Gumbo here is, big surprise, the show stopper. It is the best. Everywhere else's gumbo is compared against their's. Always busy, so go early. Service is friendly but very casual. Perfect lunch spot in quarter. Also try shrimp remoulade salad and Spicy Bloody Mary.
JD
Great Meal. I had the combination platter which consists of Shrimp Creole, Jambalaya, and Red beans. I also requested a piece of sausage to go with my overflowing plate of food. I asked to sit out on the patio and was granted that wish. A typical afternoon shower had rained a bit, but I had two servers hustling to make my arrangements without water. The Makers and water was superb...though I think they made my drink water proof as well. The sausage I asked for was a surprise. It was very good and didn't over power my red beans. I enjoyed the whole pepper as well. Shredded it and scattered it throughout my meal. Should've requested one or two more to give the meal a flame more to my liking. <br/>Service was great. I liked my server. He appeared to be going the extra step despite the desire to be elsewhere. Who can blame him? The food was overflowing, the drinks were stiff, the service was swift. Strong suggestion for anyone looking for a place with a romantic and cozy touch.
Erik Engstrom
The food was blander than I expected, plus more expensive. Only 1 item on menu for kids -- grilled cheese. Bread pudding was good.
Gary And Misty Mitchell
Very good food &excellent service. Crawfish etouffe $ chicken gumbo were delicous & tasted great with the fresh bread!!!
Scarlet Dangerfield
I was so excited to go here from others reviews I read, but it was the worst dining experience I had while in New Orleans. The hostess and the server were extremely rude and seemed as if they didn't want to be there. If that didn't make the dinner ackward enough my gumbo was served with half a crab shell in it. Which quickly made me lose my appetite. But thankfully we passed about 20 other resturants on our way back to the hotel that looked wonderful!!
John J. Lawless
Food was great, prices very reasonable and the service was excellent. The crawfish étouffée was awesome.
Shaner
Long line but was seated fast because. We took an outside table on hot day. There were fans on us and sufficient shade. Food was very good as was service. Strong bloody Mary's. Vegetarian choices. Worth the stop! Great food and good prices.

A Visitors Tradition. Whenever we have visitors in from outside of Louisiana, we try to take them to two restaurants, neither of them fine dining: Boutin's in Baton Rouge (where we live), a Mulate's clone that does very well with the cajun music, and The Gumbo Shop. The Shop does a fine daquiri, and is a good start for any of the traditional creole dishes. It is a pleasant courtyard, and the d'Zerbes is a good introduction to gumbo for any of the squeamish who might pay TOO much attention to what goes into their bill-of-fare.

Regular Haunt. One of the most consistent places that I've been visit after visit.

The best gumbo I've found in NOLA. Friendly servers and great atmosphere. Fantastic!
James Emerson
Best Gumbo I've ever had. End of review.

This is a very charming spot. Right next to Jackson square in the heat of the French quarter. Donald, our waiter was superb.

One Local's Fallback "FQ" Tourist Restaurant. The Gumbo Shop is a big, airy, busy dining room serving well-prepared, tasty, and affordable NOLA comfort food. It offers a broad menu friendly to many dietary needs and preferences. It is my fallback mid-range FQ tourist restaurant. <br/><br/>I ended up at The Gumbo Shop most recently in late 09/2008 for a 1 pm Saturday lunch with a group of 7 local college froshwomen on a lit class tour of the French Quarter. We found ourselves hungry and indecisive after finding the wait for the Napoleon House patio excessive. <br/><br/>Right there on the sidewalk, I pulled out the Urbanspoon iPhone app to assist in the pressing command decision in re Plan B for lunch. The Gumbo Shop! Yes!! We were all so hungry at this point, and the students wanted "New Orleans food."<br/><br/>My subcommandante swooped in ahead of a large challenger pack, and secured our table. Everyone ate well for a reasonable price. The lactose-intolerant ate. The vegetarians ate. Some people ate fish. Subcommandante ripped through a respectable+ roast beef po-boy. Several students enjoyed very good gumbo for the first time. The bread is crispy and generously-served. The service overall is competent and friendly, even in a superbusy room. <br/><br/>Everyone left stuffed. I can't quite remember, but I think we shared desserts. My boudin and mustard, cup of greens, cup of red beans, and cup of chicken andouille gumbo were well-prepared and satisfying. <br/><br/>The more adventurous tourist in search of New Orleans neighborbood comfort food should jump on the bus and go try Ignatius at 4200 Magazine Street at Milan Street (Uptown).<br/><br/>The Gumbo Shop also does catering off the same sort of New Orleans menu from Front Street location Uptown. Red beans, greens, and rice express to you in cunning heatpacked containering!
Andrew
One thing I would like to point out is that New Orleans has some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
FCV
But my favorite meal, by far, was at the Gumbo Shop (in the French Quarter), which serves authentic New Orleans cuisine AND offers both a vegetarian gumbo and a daily vegetarian creole-style rice and beans dish. Unfortunately, the restaurant does not accept reservations, but I had no problem getting a table even during the busy carnival season by showing up a little early, before the dinner rush.

Gumbo Shop is another foodie destination where a queue with a long wait is the norm. Always lingering in the mind is if the wait will be worth it.  As it turns out, it was worth the wait.  On this drizzly evening, the queue was about 30 people deep. Fortunately, a menu is posted along the wall so we decided on what we would order before we finally got a table. It would be the Grilled Boudin with Creole Mustard and the Complete Creole Dinner. Boudin. It was soft, mushy, and disintegrated upon cutting. I

Being fairly famished by this point, luckily they started us off with two large po-boy buns. It’s a type of bread that’s synonymous with New Orleans with its airy centre and dry flaky crust. Although it is derived from a baguette, it lacks the chewiness and aromatic fragrance the French counterpart embodies. Nonetheless, when you’re hungry everything tastes amazing. To begin we each ordered a bowl o

A touristy joint in the French Quarter is just going to be a let down after Café Des Amis, D.I.’s and Prejean’s.

...black beans and rice (with a corn salsa), and it was simultaneously scrumptious and inexpensive!
A Vegetarian Traveller
This was a jackpot - I was attracted to the place because of one menu item that said 'a vegetarian dish with rice, beans and creole seasonings'. Lo and Behold we could eat all of the items below: Gumbo z ' herbes or green gumbo Meatless macque choux corn

We were in New Orleans over the weekend for a friend's wedding. On Saturday, we rode bikes through the French Quarter and stopped for lunch at the Gumbo Shop. I'd flipped through the (local alternative newspaper) Gambit's "Best of" issue and the Gumbo Sho

Neil and I took advantage of free flights (on Aeroplan points) and my March Break to head down to NOLA for the first time for both of us. Here’s a brief(ish) roundup of some of the memorable places we ate in New Orleans. And yes, I did bring my big camera
Watch Me Eat
I started to get hungry while wandering around the French Quarter in New Orleans. This meant lunch was happening soon, and the winning restaurant turned out to be the Gumbo Shop. Gumbo Shop is located in a historic building on St. Peter Street. They had indoor seating or outdoor seating in a nice looking courtyard behind the restaurant. I had the Seafood Okra Gumbo. According to the menu, this was okra, onion, bell peppers, celery, and a tiny bit of tomato sauteed and blended with shrimp and crab into a thick brown Creole soup - served over rice. This was a very tasty okra. There were plenty of good sized shrimp floating around in there, as well as half of a crab. The gumbo had just the right amount of spice. It was very flavorful, and wasn't  too spicy or bland. I liked it! Bread was served on the side. I enjoyed Gumbo Shop. The food was good and the prices were much more affordable than the surrounding restaurants that I looked at. I'd return!
