Review Orient Dong Phuong Restaurant - New Orleans

TRAVELIN' YELLOW CHUCKS
I want to share with my Google Maps 🌎 family how wonderfully amazing this vietnames restaurant and bakery 🥖 is! Screaming 📣from the top of the mountains ⛰️ "Stop by and try any of these deliciously prepared dishes! You'll fall in ❤️ love with anything you chose!" Bakery items to the full restaurant menu, all I can say is get there, try new things, try things you've had before, just get there! We had boba drinks, pho, korean short ribs, rice noodles, and so many bakery items. You will not go wrong with anything you chose!

I love their Banh mi there. Had food at their restaurant too and had the bun Bo hue and the mi wonton. Food was legit and probably the best around. Banh Mi was nice and crunchy and had great flavor of ingredients.

I've been going to the Dong Phoung bakery since I was a child. My family lived in BR but every time we went to NOLA, we just had to stop by for some french pastries and delicious banh mi. Now as an adult, I'm able to go to Dong Phoung myself, I also make sure to stop by even if it means driving through 50mins of traffic. It has never disappointed, the flavors are always so good. The banh mi here will always be my #1. The bread is the perfect amount of crunch, it has a satisfying sound when eating. I love the steamed bao, both the pork egg and char siu filling are tasty. The bao is nice and soft with a sweet flavor. The pate chaud and baked bao are also so good, especially when fresh. I love the texture of the baked bao. I haven't had their pastries often, so I don't have much to say about the ones that are displayed on the shelf. I have had the pandan honeycomb, yucca pie, and steamed banana cake. I was surprised to see the steamed banana cake but it was delicious and reminded me of my childhood when my grandmother would make me some. The honeycomb cake was also a familiar taste that had that chewy soft texture that it's known for. I think the only thing I've had that was a miss was a slice of jelly cake. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not the biggest pandan flavor person and I was also expecting it to taste like something else T_T And then lastly, I did choose to get my 2022 King Cake from Dong Phoung and it was just amazing. I usually don't like cream cheese icing but it was a good balance to the cake. I'm definitely going to get a king cake from them again in 2024. The customer service is immaculate, everyone is so kind. I'm happy that they are able to invest into their branding and upgrade with the bags and banh mi boxes. They have this cute imagery of a scooter with nola backgrounds like .. I love the culture that's being spotlighted.

An absolute must if you enjoy Vietnamese food! The bakery always has a wide array of treats, breads, and much more. Best French bread and King Cakes around! There is also a resturant attached to tickle your tastebuds even further. I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area!

In my opinion, this place is an all-time classic for authentic Vietnamese food! I dined in at Dong Phuong with my mother on a Sunday evening, and the service was nice & quick. We ordered two dishes. The first dish was a “Com Suong Nuong”, which is a Grilled Pork Chop dish sided with rice, cucumbers, and picketed vegetables ($11.00). The second dish was a large “Hoành Thánh Mì Hoặc Súp”, which is a bowl of egg noodle soup filled with wontons and pork ($17.00). For drinks, we got a Thai Tea drink with regular boba ($5.00) and an Avocado smoothie with extra lychee jelly ($5.00 + $1.00 = $6.00). For the grilled pork chop dish, it had so much flavor to it! The pork chop was charred to perfection. Not only that, but the portions were massive as well! For $11.00, this type of dish was really cheap. As for the egg noodle soup, the broth was good too and the portions were huge as well, but I personally liked the pork chop dish more because of the impact the charred flavor got on me. For the drinks, they were all tasty and price worthy in my opinion. As for the decorum, the place is clean, but still a bit dark and small. It’s not like a trendy setting, but the service, cleanliness, and tastiness makes up for it. Although Dong Phuong is located in New Orleans East, a very dangerous area, I’d still say this restaurant is worth a try, especially for the Grilled Pork Chop dish!

Been salivating about Dong Phuong since we wen two weeks ago. Went into Dong Phuong not knowing its reputation. It seemed like a well run bakery and banh mi shop. Loved the variety of pastries. We got mooncakes, an impossible pate chaud, crawfish meat pie, and an impossible bulgogi banh mi as well as the Vietnamese sausage. We were absolutely blown away with how excellent everything was. The impossible items were so good! The baguette was crisp and light, everything was incredible. Absolutely deserving of the praise given to Dong Phuong. I wish we lived closer!

For the ABSOLUTE BEST King cake!! I drove from NJ -before they shipped-to share these exquisite cake with family! Had a great lunch & took sandwiches home.

Wow! That’s all I can say. Traveling through New Orleans from out of state and I love Viet food. Never had a baked version of of the bao and I definitely recommend it. Pate Chaud and Meat Pie is what I got. Wish I had bought more to go. Did try the Bahn Mi and I thought that was okay.

Traditional Vietnamese restaurant. Very clean, staff was very friendly, and had great customer service. The food was hot and fresh! The portions were plentiful. Flavors were really wonderful. You can see the bakery next door and it was very busy. I'll have to add photos of bakery next time. I was too distracted with all the yummy goodness going on over there.

Best king cake period and for $28 bucks each👍you gotta get there between 8-10a or it’s all gone and the limit is 3 king cakes per person. I would recommend to order online on the same day and then picking it up. My favorite is crème cheese 😊

I am no authority on Vietnamese food but this restaurant was delicious. We tried a few different pho’s and all were so good. Depth of flavor in the broth was really good. We also got bakery items that you can eat in the restaurant and everything was delicious.

I haven't eaten at the restaurant, but the bakery next door is phenomenal! They have really good meat pies, and their cakes are delicious as well! I'd highly recommend the pork meat pie and the red velvet cake.

Nice little stop for lunch on our way out to the gulf coast. Nice value authentic Pho and Vietnamese food. As an added value they have a bakery attached for bread and pastries to go. Good find. Thank You

Came for the king cake, got breakfast and pork buns while we were there. Affordable prices and absolutely delicious food. Service was super expedited, efficient and fast. Highly recommend for snack, a meal, or king cake!

Amazing banh mis that are prepared to order!! Wait time: None for us! They are only allowing less than 10 people into the bakery at a time because it’s a small space and it’s probably something that they implemented since the pandemic. Ordered: Pork Banh Mi - French Bread was soft but slightly crisp. Pork was sliced thin with plenty of flavor. Also, the sandwich was huge and was just $6! They’d charge $10 for this where I’m from! They make the banh mi to order and there’s a “build your own option.” Steamed pork bun - Soft, fluffy! The inside had pork, chopped shrimp, sausage and egg. I’ve never had a Vietnamese pork bun before and it was good! I’m my ethnicity we make steam pork buns but without shrimp and different seasoning. Vietnamese coffee (from restaurant) - STRONG! But delicious. Tip: let the ice melt before you drink it. Vietnamese Coffee flavored jello - yum! Not too sweet and tasted like Vietnamese coffee! Vibe: You know it’s good if all the workers are Vietnamese and their main clientele are Vietnamese. Parking: Plenty of free parking in an open lot. Would I return?: YES. I would’ve never stopped here if I wasn’t recommended by a friend. It’s kind of out of the way of the hussle and bussle of the French Quarters, but definitely worth it if you like Vietnamese bakery goods! Everything there is good, but the banh mi is the star of the show. I also want to go back and try the restaurant that is attached to the bakery.

Daughter wanted to try something different from the usual American Sunday dinner, so here we are! I got the beef soup with extra noodles, shrimp, and a side of spicy paste on the side. My daughter got a Vermicelli Rice Bowl "it was bussin 😋!" The limeade was 10/10, and do give the H7 beverage a try: condensed milk, egg yolks, and Seltzer! Great service too!

My husband, children, and I just ate the MOST AMAZING meal at the restaurant, and then we indulged with pistolettes and bakery items from the adjacent bakery. We are from Mobile, but we spend approximately 1/3 to half of our time in New Orleans for business, and this was one of the best meals we have eaten in New Orleans. The Pho is to die for, and their Grilled Pork is something to savor every bite of. Get a piece of cheesecake. It was so delicious that we ate the first piece in the car, and my husband went back inside and bought another piece for us to take home. The staff are warm, welcoming, and patient! Will be back soon. If not tomorrow!

This place has the best banh mi sandwiches around! They are usually busy so get here early before the crowd shows up. Tried their Korean short ribs and pork skin rice dish. The flavoring on the short ribs had more of a Vietnamese flavor to it then the normal kbbq I've had. However, the dish was delicious and I would definitely get it again.
Pompiere
Well everyone says these are the best Bahn Mi NOLA has, but to me it was just ok nothing to write home about. Somehow the sandwich lacked the freshness of others we’ve enjoyed, and the jalapenos offered no spice. With a large Viet population, there has got to be better in the area.
Eric
Love it! In my opinion, the best pho and banh mi in New Orleans bar none. Tasty, cheap (the banh mi is only $3.50!), and friendly service. Make sure you stop by the attached bakery after your meal to get some delicious Vietnamese baked goods as well. 5 stars for Dong Phuong! I will definitely be back.

Long-time favorite. Been stopping in since the early 80's when coming home to metairie from bay st. louis. the best pho, whole duck, and assortment of noodles and sandwiches. the variety is hugh and my kids (34-32-25) still love going there. see you there for mother's day for a great meal and a relaxing casual feast.

Meat Pies. I don't usually care very much for meat pies but these were amazing. So flaky and delicious and the pork inside so delicious.
Bsnola2
YUM!. My friend and I shared two banh mi, a roasted pork (#4) and a BBQ chicken (#9), and they were both delicious, with super fresh ingredients and possibly the best bread of this type I've ever had (firm but not so firm that it scrapes the roof of your mouth). And such a deal at $3.25 each. Can't wait to go back and try all the other varieties!
JEL
Worth A Journey. Great bahn mi spot, and they sell beautiful baked goods. The loaves of bread can't be beat, and the price of three for around $1.50 is a steal!

My wife and I discovered this jewel today. First time in my life after eating a meal at a restaurant, I immediately ordered the same entree for the road. Of the 10 or so Vietnamese restaurants I have visited in my lifetime, this one is #1!!!

Bread is worth the drive!. I heard about this through Top Chef and quickly took the drive and wondered why I hadn't heard of this before. I went on a Wednesday around 1:30 for a late lunch and was so disappointed in the gummy spring roll for my appetizer! The lack of any flavor or cilantro was not as bad as the odd off putting flavor of something inside the roll. Next I had Lemongrass Chicken which was drowning in some sort of brown lemongrass flavored gravy, not very authentic, but pretty good. When I left I bought 6 baguettes in the bakery and they were incredible!! Worth the drive just for the bread.
The Discriminating Palate
Disappointed.... Wife and I were at a hotel in the CBD and were ooking for something different to try on a Sunday afternoon. Checked the DP website and it said they were open til 6 on Sundays. So we hopped in the car at 4pm and took the long ride out to Chef Hwy. Pulled in at 4:30, went inside and were informed that they closed at 4. Makes me very hesitant about ever wanting to drive out there ever again.

Delicious. The best tasty, best value vietnamese food in New Orleans. $3.25 for a Po-boy that was stuffed full of yummyness! $1.25 for scrumptious croissant style meat pies. It's way out in the east but well worth the drive!
Juicy Lucy
OMG.. Most amazing cashiers/hosts Ever. He's young and absolutely breathtaking. He's always so polite. His service is great. I love the food, but I really come back for him. I'm a smitten kitten.

Great viet food and American Chinese, I had grilled tofu , spring roll , egg drop soup and coconut juice , all for lunch and all for about $7. Id go back , I love pho and bubble teas and this place has about the biggest selection of bubble teas I've seen

Why did I wait so long to try this place??!!. Every bite was amazing! I hit the bakery today and picked up a bunch of items to go. The grilled pork bahn mi was the best bahn mi I have ever had. The grilled pork was sweet, caramelized, tender, thinly sliced and a significanly larger portion than other places....a steal at $2.85. The veges were fresh, lightly pickled, very crunchy and also abundant. They've earned their title of best french bread in nola. I picked up 5 rolls for $2.00.

I was suprised when I picked up a pork, sausage and egg in flakey crust...it must have weighed 8-10oz. Unreal. The crust was both flakey and a little bready...just substantial enough to contain all that pork. Very tasty, super moist and incredibly filling...loved it. The steamed bun had the same filling but a lightly sweetened, fluffy, spongy bun...another winner.

Why would anyone ever eat fast food when this is an option? For $12.85 I got 5 rolls, 1 bahn mi, 2 pork steamed buns, 2 pork in flakey crust and 1-20oz soda. I took my goodies and jetted up to the pochatrain shore for a bahn mi in the sun...perfect lunch. I cannot wait to come back with friends and eat at the restaurant.

This place never fails to please me with their food, and I'm Vietnamese. Just a tip when you eat at the restaurant... Order your drinks way before your food because service is a little slow.. My favorite dish is the com bi suon cha with egg. It's classic and delicious! The portions they give you with all the main dishes are also huge so it's worth the money

For Reals the best bread in the city!. Dong phuong prides itself on having the best bread around and, oh boy...do they not disappoint. Their french bread is amazing, its crispy, buttery outside with light fluffiness inside. This bread is used all around the market places in New Orleans East--it's that good! Must try for people stopping by or in the area. It's not expensive either like 3 loafs for 1.25ish (something like that...don't hold my word to me).

Worth the Drive. Best Vietnamese in Town. It took a few minutes to get out there. You have to take 510 to Chef Menteur Hwy and then continue another couple of miles. I entered through the bakery side and was blown away with the all the different offerings. They have $3 poboy station that serves 15 options. I opted to sit down and dine and ordered the spring rolls for an app and the vermicelli lunch plate with pork and beef. Up to this point I thought I had tried good vermicelli plates but nothing quite compares to what I had at Dong Phuong. The meat was juicy and seasoned well. It also came in a giant bowl. Did I mention that you get a bowl of egg drop soup with the meal. Everything was delicious. I now a customer for life. Can't wait to go back and eat my way through their menu.

Worth the drive. Dong Phoung was an overall good experience. Good selection of food - a group of us went together and tried a few different things duck, pho, and grilled lemongrass beef - all very good. Service was good as well..not to mention the bakery. I cant wait to take a trip out to the far far east to have this place again

Great bread and awesome king cakes!!
Big Dipper
#1 Vietnamese bakery from Alabama to Louisiana. Everytime I come in here, the bakery is stocked full of banh mi which is very reasonably priced. My favorite is the BBQ pork steamed buns. They used to sell hot foods like pho, rice, etc in the room next to the bakery but I have not seen that venue of Dong Phuong open in almost a year. I hope they are still offering that service and doing to upgrading/maintenance work because I liked the hot foods that they sell also.

Great bread, great sandwiches. Great bread, great sandwiches and awesome prices. what more can you want?

If you are in the area, try it. I've always gotten a great meal here over the years
Not to mention being able to get tthe best French bread in the city to take home on the way out !

Oh, the bakery...yummy bakery!. This is a must stop location everytime my family and I visit. You can't go wrong with anything in their bakery from the banh mi, to the sweet pastries, or the savory pastries. They bake fresh french baquettes right on the premises and their prices can't be beat....especially when you consider the quality and care with which they do everything!

Mmmm! Dong Phuong is the best place to go eat with family and friends. Their food be rolling and the customer service is great. I love their thai tea tapioca and their food, like mi nuoc, mi xao don, etc. It's delicious and it's making me crave some now!

Best Vietnamese Po Boys around. Super cheap, bakery is always stocked with something good. The puff pastries and steamed buns rock. The restaurant ain't what it used to be.
Urbanspoon Gimp
One of the worst Viet. Consistently one of the worst Viet meals I eat. The bakery is cool and all, but neither is it any good. The bobos from in town like coming out here for the cultural experience, but it's not very good food.
Ray Cannata
Huge portions, great prices, tasty. Vietnamese. breakfast & lunch. open til 4. Closed Mon. More traditional Chinese-American in style than Pho Bang (which seemed more authentically Vietnamese and different). Low ceiling, odd decor. Set at the end of a former motel. Bakery attached. Very good, very large portions. Beef w/ vegetable came with great fried rice, a tiny egg roll, and excellent egg drop soup for just $6.50. Chicken was also good. 1/10.
Phil Rew
All about the Banh Mi.. Wat's to say? Great sandwhiches under $4! good veggie options.
Ugo
Mon, Wed-Sun 9AM-4PM, Sun 9AM-5PM, Tue Closed. Kung Pao Chicken at lunch is excellent. The Pork Chop & Shredded Beef with Steamed Rice (sunnyside-up egg, optional), #54, was tender and juicy, the beef at bit dry (use the dipping sause). Stop by the bakery for the coconut macaroons, champagne cookies, it's all good!
JTran
They have the best Vietnamese and Chinese dishes in New Orleans. Save room for some sweet desserts and an fruity bubble tea with tapoicas.
BackBayouVintage
Everything on the menu is amazing, but I reccomend the No. 1 “French Cold Cut” Banh Mi. This is absolutely worth the drive to the East.
Miss L
Every dish from the pho to a hot pot fish dish is authentic to the core.

When you make a claim like “Best French Bread in New Orleans” you can be sure that me and my camera will turn up! I came in pretty early on Saturday morning and the line was ridiculously long!! This bakery is teeny tiny! I think with about 10 ppl in the bakery, we were standing elbow-to-elbow while reaching for our various pastries. baked goods So early in the morning and stuff is already running out! Makes me feel like a person in that movie, “Confessions of a Shop-a-holic” and you see her at a designer sampler sale and everybody is going nuts over the cheap prices for designer items. famous French bread I love that line in Ratatouille, “How do you know good bread? Not the smell! But the sound! >squeezes the bread< A sweet symphony of crackle!” bahn mi station Even early in the morning, there was a long line for the bahn mi station so I snuck up to the side and took this picture and left without a sandwich, boo
