Review Slim Goodies Diner - New Orleans

Great food!!! The gluten-free waffles were delicious! Chicken was amazing! Little goat egg dish was yummy!

i love the fact that they were the only place to be open on Thanksgiving Day with great food. loved it. even though i ordered bacon and it naver came out, i still loved this place.
Autumn McNoodles
No vegan mayo for my BLAT sandwich (blt with avocado with no tomato sub onion) but it was actually pretty good. My friend ordered the country fried steak with eggs and loved it. Service was great. Lots of vegetarian dishes, with vegan options as well. Think tofu scrambles and black bean burgers.

The owner was there and was very personal with us! We also witnessed her stay on top of everything, making sure things were satisfactory and taking pride in it. The food was awesome...even the next day as leftovers! The atmosphere is so cute, fun, with lots to look at! You can't go wrong with Slims!

Great place for breakfast or brunch. The food is fun and unique and works really well. (Though maybe reconsider using Jewish in the name of a dish containing shellfish, hm?) I'm afraid I found the food to be seasoned a bit on the tourist (aka bland) side of things, so do be sure to ask for hot sauce.

This was an incredible brunch experience. First, let me prepare you. It's busy. Like "we have good food and everyone loves us" busy not "we're giving away hundred dollar bills" busy that some New Orleans brunch places have. Maybe 30 minutes. Slim Goodies beats all those other places by a mile. My dish was a combination of crawfish ettoufee while my buddy had chili on his. Both had a hash brown bed and a choice of eggs. Simple, incredibly tasty and delicious. Definitely get there.

Had the best meal at this impromptu brunch. The wait was less than 10 minutes on a Saturday. The appetizer (fries with crawfish) was amazing and the coffee was very good. They even have boozy drinks. The pink mimosa was also delicious. Everyone’s meal was satisfactory. We even had our photo taken to add to their unique wall of Polaroids. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting a delicious brunch near Magazine street.

Had a late breakfast here while in town. It’s a really fun hippy vibe. Very colorful. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was nice. The standout being the French toast - they grill it. It was wonderful and worth the visit alone. Fun place and feels like a nice warm neighborhood spot and not touristy. Would go here again.

We really LOVED this place! I had the sweet potato waffle with pecans, my daughter had the pancakes, and my wife had the Greek omelette. This is a quirky place away from the Quarter. Can’t wait to go back for lunch.

So good we went back twice during our stay. Great Bloody Mary's! No one in our group had a bad meal. Waffles, pancakes, eggs...all good. Hash browns were excellent. Bacon cooked exactly how it was ordered (we all like it crispy). French toast was stellar!
The Biscuit Butterer
This place was recommended to us by our AirBnB host as it was locally owned and within walking distance. We were there when they opened, seated and served within 15 minutes. There were Polaroids all over the walls of smiling faces of regular customers, and first timers. My husband ordered a typical big breakfast, and I had the banana pancakes with sausage. They were cooked in butter with crispy edges and soft pockets of fresh banana. It was heaven on a plate. If you looking for that typical diner menu with a casual neighborhood feel, this is your place! 5 stars all the way!
Stephanie Park
Amazing breakfast. The gluten free pancakes are a complete win! Great texture and flavor. Highly recommend!

This place was a favorite when I lived here in the early 2000’s. It’s still a great diner for breakfast. The atmosphere is fun. The food is good. Right on fabulous Magazine Street.

Like waffle house but better. Julienned hashbrowns on the flat top are a must for me, none of this home fries being passed off as hashbrowns that so many places do nowadays. Bacon thick and crispy. Best breakfast I've had in NOLA.
Emily Martin
The service was awesome especially since it was Thanksgiving and who wants to work on Thanksgiving? The food was cold but tasty. I would not order the French toast again since it was mushy and almost cold.
Honey Bee
Across the board exactly what you’d expect from a breakfast joint in a hip part of town. Worth revisiting to try more menu items! The quality is very good and prices reflect it, left quite satisfied. Service was friendly and authentic.

It's a great diner. I like sitting at the counter, in front of the grill. It's just busy, and comfy. The wait staff are always cool, and today was no different. Had Slimcheros. Eggs, meat and cheese in between 2 tortillas (I had corn), with some gravy in top. On the side are sour cream, jalapenos, and salsa. Several cups of coffee. Excellent meal. Excellent place. Try it!!!!

Fantastic food and staff. We sat on the patio with four kids and four adults and fit right in. There were no leftovers! We make it a point to visit any time we are in New Orleans. Their etoufee over hasbrowns is heaven on a plate.

Great atmosphere, friendly and courteous staff. Very extensive menu and very affordable. Plenty of seating, even an outdoor back patio. And, if you're good, you can get your picture on the wall(s) of fame!

New Orleans, Louisiana --- 2nd visit to "Slim Goodies Diner" ... 1st visit around 7am with just 2 other customers, and today shortly before 11am, when chaos ruled ... consistency did not exist at "Slim Goodies Diner" (for me anyway) .., really great service 1st time, but bad service this time ... the 2 slices of bacon were chewey, cold & under-cooked 1st time, with the 2nd time 3 slices of perfectly-cooked crispy bacon ... one constant was the hash browns were cold both times, although the 1st hash browns were "swimming" in grease, but no visible grease the 2nd time ... my over-easy eggs were over-cooked 1st time (hard yolk) & under-cooked 2nd time (with clear stuff running out of eggs when I cut them) ... both servers did not bring me my biscuit/toast until I had eaten a good portion of my breakfasts ... coffee & water re-fills were right on 1st time, but 2nd time I sat with 2 "empty" liquid holders for an "extended" period (& it was not because of chaos, as I could see my server standing around) ... prices are high based on food quality & service $$$$ I do like the counter-seating snd outdoor patio seating options though day 044 "DUSA 2017" (Discover USA) "Run-A-Way Bill" was here! (again, but most likely not again) #RunAwayBill #DUSA2017 04.07.17

It was a long wait but the staff was friendly. Our waitress was nice and we never had a empty glass of drink. The food insane portions of deliciousness! They play great music while you wait for your food you can do a little table dancing . All in all a good time.
Shon Gutierrez
The waitstaff was friendly and laid back, which gave an awesome vibe to the diner!! Food and portions was great... never thought to have etouffee on top of my scrambled eggs!! Defiantly will go back there!!

Stopped in for our last true NOLA meal for breakfast before heading back home to Nj. The name hits home for me as it was my fathers truck driving name, the atmosphere was on point with juke music in the background; food just say was spectacular. So glad to have visited. We'll be back!
Deborah Schumacher
A little hidden treasure of amazing Diner in the truest sense of casual and imaginative food. Simple and friendly and fun atmosphere with awesome people and service. Its a fun stop and a great beginning to any day...

Beautiful owner greeted us at the door! Excellent food, so flavorful, wonderful service, very professional! A must experience.
Lisa Moore
It was fabulous! The menu is wonderful. We had a really hard time choosing because everything sounded good. It's impossible to make a bad choice at Slim Goodies Diner! Great service, friendly staff and delicious food!

This is my favorite breakfast spot in Magazine. It is so amazing and everything is always on point. I love the options and always get a banana pancake.
Claire Riche
This place was suggested by a local on a recent trip and it was awesome. One of my favorite meals on our trip for sure. I had the creole slammer which was super crispy delicious hasbrowns, topped with over medium eggs & awesome shrimp etouffee (not too spicy just a lot of flavor) would definitely recommend!!

Sat at the counter; place was very busy on Magazine St a couple hours before St Pat's parade. Watching the line cooks at work was very entertaining. You could see how each item was made to order. Everything we had was delicious and filling. Very generous portions. 20-25 minutes for orders to be filled but we had a front row seat and passed a good time with the staff and nearby customers. Will definitely put this on list of regular eating joints!
Stephanie Patterson
Great food! Great atmosphere! Highly recommend Slim Goodies if you want a great meal off the beaten path. Great prices too.
KC Hoye
The food is always on point! I know it's not traditional but I'm a huge fan of the chicken and waffles with red eye gravy. Rumor on the street is the sweet potato pancakes will knock your socks off. Definitely a perfect beginning to laundry day.
Wynette Burton
It just doesn't get much better for local places. That's what I like to do is eat local. There was soooo much food. Haven't had a perfect over medium egg in a restaurant in forever. Next time I'm back in New Orleans I will definitely go back. Great atmosphere. I would recommend to anyone.
Fred Campbell
This place is one of my favorite breakfast spots in the city. Cool old Diner feel with amazing food.
Gina Greer
Hoyt ordered a custom omelet and said it was the best he ever had, and I ordered the Doc, with scrambled eggs and sausage. The sausage was to write home about and so were the pancakes. Love this place!
Amelee71
Greasy spoon uptown eatery. I had a simple BLT and it was great. I hear that have a good breakfast. It's been a few years since I visited. Will try again when the opportunity arises.
Andrea Erickson
Hip and fun vibe to enjoy conversation with friends. The menu has a variety of options, including vegan and gluten free. Beautiful outside patio.
Sammy D.
There are no signs outside that make it clear it is the right place. We walked by 3 times before we realized it was the place bc we could see the tiny words on the door. But the atmosphere is very laid back, the food had creative names & it was good food at a good price. We've been back many times & never have had any issues.
Susi Harris
Friendly service fast WiFi big tables spacious airy feel. The food was delicious, hot and fresh scrambled eggs with all the trimmings plus 2 slices wholewheat toast and unlimited coffee. I prefer my pepper black is my only negative comment - excellent stop for a late hangover cure breakfast on Magazine
Nettie
Most discussing filthy outdoor area. Could not stay. Can't give my open about the food. Do not waste your time to find parking to go here. 😟

I learned something the other day…THRILLLIST is about as qualified to conduct restaurant ratings and food rankings as Donald Trump is to be Commander in Chief. "Ouch, Wayne. That's a bit harsh, don't you think?" But as always, there is a source for my sharp impressions.

My direct animosity is derived from an article I stumbled across which was published August 17, 2014. The source is entitled “The 21 Best Breakfast Spots in America 2014”. Yep, it's one of 'those' lists. Now to be fair, there is an implicit disclaimer in the article’s introduction which states that the restaurants listed are the two contributors’ “favorite breakfasts in the nation”.

Can we just acknowledge exactly how misleading that title now appears to be? While the terms “best” and “greatest” are some of the most arbitrary and vague titles existent in the English language, you need some form of quantitative data or proof to reach such a conclusion. Perhaps you could first assemble a panel of individuals in the restaurant profession (individuals who are well-educated in the culinary arts and well-versed in cooking and are thereby knowledgeable of the intricacies of taste and flavor) and then allow them to nominate some of their favorite dishes or establishments particular to whatever meal or cuisine you are ranking (I didn't say that determining the 'best' would be an easy endeavor). After you are provided a list of nominees, you could proceed to conduct a poll asking a number of diners and customers to choose what dish or establishment they preferred most. Finally, you could take the most popular selections and rank them according to votes and consequently attach the label of 'best' to them.

Then again, if popularity was any indicator of success or quality, then McDonald’s or IHOP might be worthy of such superlatives. Still, it seems as though in order to deem a restaurant as one of the best of anything in this country, you would require the opinions and experiences of more than two individuals.

So where am I going with this labyrinthine introduction?

Well, it just so happens that one of New Orleans’ very own restaurants secured a spot on this supremely subjective list. That of course would be the Magazine Street adjoining business known as Slim Goodies Diner.

The place seems harmless enough. As you enter, you are greeted by the presence of hundreds of Polaroid photographs of what appear to be satisfied customers. The pictures cover most of the walls near the front entrance and create a hospitable environment for a morning meal. There is a long bar extending towards the back, with a portion of the kitchen directly in front of the bar. And of course, there are cushioned seats running along the length of this dining area which help complete the classic diner setup. There are also booths and tables available for seating. There is also a doorway beside the end of the bar which leads into an adjacent room comprised of even more tables and booths.
With its high ceilings and various seating options, Slim Goodies prevents you from ever feeling cramped.

When we sat down to look at the menu, we were immediately attracted to the Creole and Cajun influences evident among what is so often standard breakfast fare. The Guatemalan served with black beans and a slice of avocado sounded tasty, as did a number of the plate options with ingredients ranging from crab meat to potato latkes. Because we were having so much trouble deciding on what to order, we asked our server for his input. He remarked that the Creole Slammer was recently voted a “top-100” breakfast in America and implied that it would be worth a try. However, he did not cite the source or publication which granted the dish such merit.

Now that’s quite a statement to make. You have just the set the bar remarkably high for yourself, my friend. When I walked through Slim Goodies doors, I had no expectations for an once-in-a-lifetime breakfast. I simply wanted some good and relatively satiating food before my 11 o’clock brunch reservations.

Of course, I had to order the dish after our server sang such praises. Even at a steep $15.50, I was willing to bet that this would be quite the payoff. After all, it was a serving of hash browns topped with two eggs and crawfish étouffée with a side of biscuit. What part about that doesn’t sound absolutely divine? Aside from the Creole Slammer, we also ordered a stack of the Sweet Cakes, which are pancakes made from sweet potato (one of my absolute favorite foods).

Our food arrived not long after we ordered, but my anticipation was almost immediately dimmed. A frown spread across my face at the sight of the minuscule Creole Slammer. It was comparable in size to a dish that would be valued at approximately $8-10 at any other diner or breakfast joint. Not to mention, the food itself wasn’t all that easy on the eyes. The biscuit was small and hardly looked homemade and there was barely any étouffée roux covering the hash browns and eggs. For those of you unfamiliar with French culinary terminology, étouffée translates to “smothered”. Meaning: there should have been a substantial amount of roux covering my plate (think biscuits and gravy volume). Instead, the dish looked relatively dry. Some of the lack of moisture was due in part to our decision to order our eggs scrambled (my date has a dysfunctional issue regarding non-scrambled eggs), but that still does not forgive the conservative serving of roux.

On the other hand, the Sweet Cakes looked fantastic, and I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into them. Our server provided us with some Steen’s cane syrup as a condiment, but, honestly, those pancakes required no syrup or sauce of any kind. They were some of the moistest and most well-seasoned pancakes I have ever had. I don’t know if I will ever be able to eat plain, old buttermilk griddlecakes again after these lovelies. When paired with the Steen’s cane syrup, they were essentially perfect. To say this is one of my favorite breakfast items I have ever consumed would not be hyperbole in the least.

But in regards to the award-winning Creole Slammer…where do I begin? As I mentioned previously, the biscuit was small and nothing special. It very well could have been previously frozen as far as I know. The crawfish were decently seasoned but nothing compared to what you would expect if they were fresh. And I can’t even evaluate the roux because there was hardly any to begin with. The eggs were what you would expect while the shredded hash browns were both modestly served and, like the biscuit, just okay. When I stop to think about the $15+ price tag attached to this dish, it makes me pretty aggravated.

Say what you want about the price being justified as a result of the crawfish not being in season, but I think it’s absolutely ridiculous when you realize that a similar dish containing crabmeat was only 50 cents more.

To top it all off, the server informed us that they accept only cash for payment. I guess the blame should fall on me for not conducting a more thorough research beforehand, but I saw no indication when we walked in or while gazing at the menu related to the payment policy. Plus, I was not provided my change after paying cash. A tip should never, and I repeat...NEVER, be assumed on the part of the wait staff.

This meal was so polarizing due to my love for the Sweet Cakes and my displeasure regarding the Creole Slammer. I can’t definitively say whether Slim Goodies is a treat or trap, but I certainly feel as though I did not get my money’s worth.

Try it out for yourself to determine what side of the fence you fall on. As for me, I’m currently sitting directly on the fence. There were plenty of other dishes which caught my attention, so I can’t say I wouldn’t be open to the prospect of returning. Until then, I would advise anyone not to set their expectations too high and to take any acclaim with a grain of salt…something the Creole Slammer needed.

Sweet Cakes Taste: 10/10 Creole Slammer Taste: 6/10

Cost: 6/10

Dining Area/Décor: 6/10

Customer Service: 8/10

Location: 8/10

Read reviews about terrible and slow customer service but came anyway, and found all the reviews to be wrong. Amira and mike and another guy who gave me more tea were fantastic, and menu options made this vegetarian very happy

Best diner food. The best. never disappointed. busy on weekends but worth the wait. I love the slimcherros/guatemalen. more or less the same but so fantastic. take all my friends who visit here

Sweet Potato Pancakes. My favorite
Jamestideman.ids
Worst ever. The server kept ignoring us, and drink inking soda without refillilling us. The meal took 40 minutes and was cold. Never again

I love the place but in the last six months the service has gotten terrible. Frankly, it's gotten so bad that we don't go as often as we used to. The new hires just don't get it.
JM
Tasty tasty. Delicious breakfast!
Allofthethings
Gets the job done. Go here if you want to have breakfast. It's cheap, and it's breakfast. Don't go here if you want "brunch" and avoid it like the plague on the weekend, unless socializing in a line out the door is your thing. If you're a tourist you might enjoy going here on weekends because you will get to meet lots of other tourists and talk about all the places you have been while you all wait in the line. All of the food is pretty good, the shakes are good, anything with chicken is kind of gross and the burgers are straightforward.

Great Food Fun & Friendly!. Vegetarian tourist here, and ended up eating b'fast twice during my stay . First time on Sunday with 40 minute wait (um, of course ! ITs SUNDAY people) Had the tofu scramble and it was excellent!! Although slammed our waiter was downright fun and attentive and never rushed us. The second time was on Wednesday around 10:30 am They were getting readyto switch over to lunch but let us order bfast. Delicious, filling food, great service and fun atmosphere all around. X

Waited an hour and a half for this? What was a local like me thinking?! Terrible service and greasy mediocre food! Please don't waste your time!

Awesome Breakfast/Brunch. Went to this quaint diner on Magazine St. Had the Greek Omelete and partner had Havana Omelete both were excellent.
Amanda Fuoco
So freaking good and fast.
Neal Johnson
Hashbrowns were cold. Coffee bland. Pecan waffle was fair. Better places for breakfast in New Orleans
Bettina
Always Happy with this place!. Completely enjoyable every time. Good food, friendly service and wifi in a comfy, classic, yet artsy diner with booths, tables or a bar with stools. The service (and I go pretty often) has always been courteous and friendly. If you go during peak hours, expect it to be slammed. The only negative for Me is "cash only", but that was only the first time. I just go prepared, now.

Best NOLA Breakfast/Brunch Ever!. Went there this morning or our first visit with party of 6, so had to wait about 35-40 mins, which was expected. They were totally slammed with customers, but handled it very, very well.

Each person in our group had something different (Guatemalan, omelettes, salmmers and pancakes) and nobody was at all disappointed! Everybody raved about their brunch!

I had the creole slammer (a plate full of hash browns, topped with 2 perfectly cooked eggs & then topped with the best crawfish etoufee I have ever had, and accompanied with a freshly baked biscuit. The food was served promptly and hot and the server could not have been better.

They applied a 20% gratuity because of our party of six and I even kicked several dollars more (which I only do for really outstanding service).

We will certainly return there every time that we visit Nawlins from Birmingham.

Best Breakfast in NOLA. The 'Jewish Coonass' is no joke! And the Coffee Milkshake is such a treat. The ambiance and location are not to be missed. Love this place.
Snack Attack
Can't go back anymore, too frustrating to see an owner sit there while customers are clearly in need of help. The food is ok, but a restaurant is supposed be a place where needs are satisfied. I know the place is capable which is why sitting there the last few visits left me feeling less hope in the future of mankind, which is dramatic but true. The waiters don't help each other...the owner doesn't care...table keeps falling in my lap...fun place or used to be.
Snackster11
Walked in right when they opened, and was VERY RUDELY greeted by the waitress that was working. I don't know if her name was Tonic? Or Toxic? But her attitude was absolutely toxic. The food was ok and definitely did not make up for the way that I was treated in this restaurant. I've been in the service industry for over 10 years and this is not how you treat costumers. You really need to shape up your wait staff and food preparation to say the least....
Jeff Warner
Bad first time.great second time. First Time: Everything in the center of the omolette was cold. Spinach was not cooked, but the tomatoes and onions where. Mushroom were cold and hard. I love mushrooms, but i could not eat these. It will be a long time before I try this place again. Very bad breakfast.
Second Time: Eggs and black beans. The best I have had in the city.
Third Time: ?

Loves it!. I have only ever waiting awhile when I came with a large party, 10 people. Other than that its never been long and the food is so good, from the first bite you are happy that you came there. The staff seems cheery and helpful, although I have heard other people complain about their experiences. If you want a good meal, try the tex mex slammer. Pancakes are also delicious!
Sarah Rose
Lets wait an inexplicably long time.... ...for a Sysco grease pile cause we're funky uptowners. Nifty!
Bryce
Funky Breakfast, worth the wait. Slim Goodies was the first restaurant I ate at during the Katrina aftermath. At that time, you could get anything on the menu, as long as it was a hamburger. It was that determination to feed New Orleans, even with so little available resources, that I fell in love with Slim Goodies.
The restaurant has a funky style you cannot help but enjoy. You feel like a punk just sitting there. The waffles are perfect, and the slammers are awesome.
Roastbeefer
Bad food. Poor service. Bacon cooked ahead of time and stored in tray that chef ears from in front of customers. Dirty fan on counter for months in front of customers.
Bee Callan McCollum
When my family comes into town for Mardi Gras, Slim Goodies is always a breakfast stop because of the incredible food! This year, we had a group of 12- with 7 young children. The server scrambled to push tables together to get us seated ASAP. Service was quick and friendly, and the food was AMAZING! My personal favorite is the Creole Slammer. The owner came cout and visited with us and told us about how she and her sister were the first ones to reopen their restaurant after Katrina. Then she took us all outside and took our picture for the wall. We could not have had a better experience!!
Rks0874
Rude Service. Tried to get in for breakfast. Waited for a while and when I asked about service, the waiter was rude to us. Decided to leave and found a better place in the area.
Dana
Loved my breakfast!. My family and I went here one Saturday morning for a late breakfast and had to wait about 15 minutes to get a table. Trust me even if it had a longer wait I would have stayed. I had the GuateMalan which has 2 eggs, black beans, avacado, plantains and warm tortillas served with sour cream and salsa. It was so amazing I finished my whole plate which I try not to do. My only criticism was the salsa was very bland. I am going back soon.
SM
Ultimate Hangover Cafe.. Cash only, may be somewhat of a wait.. but definitely worth it. Try to sit outside in the back if there's room. It's a cute little backyard with chickens! Greasy, and filling.. and oh so good.
Meg Lee
Smells like mean spirit. No pancake can make up for rude customer service. The guys that work here need to get over themselves and the mustaches they are trying to grow. Go to Coulis nearby. The food is incredible and you're treated like a customer.
Dan
Good food, hit and miss service. I really like the atmosphere of this breakfast diner. The wait can be long on busy days and you have to wait outside. Food is good and I find the service usually good. My one complaint is they have a separate limited menu during festival times, which there are many festival weekends in new orleans. Omelats aren't on the festival menu, so I avoid this place at those times. Seriously, I would think Omelats are one of the quicker, simpler foods to make!?
Carter.patricia
Excellent Food. Had a great Brunch this Sunday Morning. The Slammers are awesome. My son and daughter-in-law are vegetarian and they had excellent choices.
Hvnewman
Great food, terrible service.... Ive eaten at Slim Goodies on multiple occasions due to its popularity through word-of-mouth. The food was good for a breakfast cafe but nothing special compared to the other diners in the city. 45 minutes for an omelet is a little absurd especially after waiting more than an hour for a table. I continue to warn my friends about the rude staff and abrasive way they treat customers. Maybe waiting that long wouldnt be so bad if the staff was even pleasant for long enough to tell you most things will take a while.
Elspeth
Excellent breakfast/brunch and awesome in general. Slim goodies is a amazing place to cure a hangover. its also a awesome place even if you are not hungover. my favorite thing that i have gotten here is the gautamalan, the slammer version that is similar. they also have good omlettes. a few things about slim goodies:
1) they only take cash.
2) they dont serve alcohol. however, there is a Breax Mart across the st. you will see lots of people go get champagne and orange juice or bloody mary stuff and just mix drinks while waiting for a table. i do the mimosa thing all the time. they also dont mind you bringing in your conviently-purchased alcohol.
3) you will probably have to wait for a table, especially on weekend mornings. it usually isnt more than a 20-30 min wait at most. if you get there early you dont have to wait
4) as you can tell from some other reviews, at times it seems like this place is working to be extra hipster. sometimes it gives out a air of "trying a little to hard to be different". its not really the decor, its the servers. but they are all really nice and ive always had excellent service. im kinda a hippie so it doesnt really bother me, and i dont see why that would deter someone from getting good food in the first place.
Jason Beck
We are tourists from Chicago and found this on urban spoon. Some of the best southern breakfast I have had and service was great. Locals and tourists alike would love this place.
Amber Griffith
YUMM. Cash only, and there is often a wait on the weekends.I love this place. Great greasy spoon type of joint and I am never disappointed. Great for curing a hangover.
Josh Reeser
Not too impressed. Waffle was flat and weak. Service was short despite only a handfull of customers. Why does waffle house still make the best waffle?
Cnolagirl
The pancakes are amazing! Prices are super reasonable and the menu is huge so your guaranteed to find something you like. Wait staff are very nice. I'll definately be going back!
Prop Joe Esq.
Not bad...but overrated in my opinion. The food here is pretty good. Def good for nursing a hangover. Very, very good omlettes. The "Slammers" are pretty good too. The menu is very large, esp. for a place like this.....and it's reasonably priced. Also service has always been OK with me.

I must say, though, that I don't have much more good to say about Slim Goodies. The building and the dining area are both pretty dingy - like they are trying too hard to be NOLA-eclectic. On the weekends, which is really the only time I eat out for breakfast, there's usually a huge line (though you can't really blame them for that). They don't take cards, which I hate (at least, they used to not take them). They don't serve booze, which I don't like as I like to have a bloody with breakfast sometimes. They have even made me and my fiancee share a table here with another couple we didn't know. Some people may not have an issue with this or even enjoy the experience. I thought it was a little weird.

Would rather eat here as opposed to somewhere like Trolley Stop or Surrey's. Would rather eat at Blue Plate or Coulis than Slim Goodies. But if you can get up early enough to avoid the rush, Slim Goodies is a good option and has pretty good food.
Melissa
Eat here!. I ate at Slim Goodies with a few friends on a Friday morning around 10:00. There was about a 15 min wait. We attempted to sit on the back patio, but was informed there was no one serving out back, which was a shame because it was such a grgeous day. The walls of the small diner were filled with drawings, photos, news articles, and posters. Our waiter was super friendly and the food was so good. Lots of vegetarian options. The menu has lots more to offer than the one listed here. I have the Orleans Slammer (which claimed to be the perfect hangover cure). Others had the lil goat, the guatemalan, and the basic egger. We were all very pleased with the food and the service. We'll def stop back by on our next trip to new orleans.
Ward Scholl
Basis breakfast done well. Bit of a wait on a Saturday, but the food was worth it. Service was good.
Jennifer
Good diner food, but B- on service. Colorful, funkadelic decor with photos of the owner's friends' kids on the walls. Had the Orleans Slammer - eggs with hashbrowns, 'mama rose's' chili. Good stuff. People dining w/ me had the burger, the chocolate chip pancakes - which looked good, but were served w/o the whipped cream. The waitstaff was very nice but sort of in-the-weeds-busy. Forgot to bring us water, though did remember coffee refills. I will definitely return to try more of the menu.

Delicious, cute, service not so great. We ate here for breakfast on vacation. It was delicious, and the place is really adorable. Our waiter wasn't all that great, he only came to the table to take our order and drop the check, never checked on us and we were not able to get his attention. BUT we noticed the waiter in the next section was very good, so just the luck of the draw... I have a gluten allergy and I'm pretty sure he didn't tell the chef or really check on anything which is not good for me, but again, could have just been this one bad waiter.
Food was really yummy.. I had the Guatemalan with corn tortillas and my husband had some sort of egg/crawfish etouffee dish that he said was also delicious. Coffee and concentrated OJ - not so good. I would go again though, hope for a better waiter and enjoy their yummy food and good ambiance.

Dirty little diner, yes you are.... Food ain't pretty but it tastes F@#$in great. Like the price too. Sweet potato pancakes are worth the trip.

Great for Brunch. I enjoy the weekend brunch. Good selection of many types of inexpensive Brunch food. Check out this little hole in the wall.

Best breakfast restaurant I've been too in a very long time. Low key and delicious.

Funky. Unique. Delicious.. Can't go wrong with a Slammer

Classic Breakfast Experience. If you're looking for a classic/traditional breakfast experience Slim Goodies is about as good as it gets in the city. The place is fun and funky with a great counter. The menu is diverse and creative (sweet potato pancakes)... The staff is hip, the coffee is hot and the servings are generous. Get there early because it fills up quick. Oh - it's priced the way breakfast should be priced - cheap!

Hangover food...... Its a cool little neighborhood diner place but, the food is kind of bland, greasy and really I only like it when I am so hungover I can't see straight. On the weekends it is a limited menu and the line is so outrageous. Too many other good places to waste your time here.

Cool place,Great food ,Awsome service,Nice change of pace!

It's not bad, but sorta overrated.... My husband and I like a lot of other places much better, but if you are already on Magazine and it's breakfast time (and not a weekend, when the wait it not worth it!) then it is a good place to go to. My issue is that the eggs are just OK, and most of the time, the sausage it overcooked.

The pancakes are not bad. I don't want to give the wrong impression, I like the place. I just think it is way over rated and overpriced for what you get.

Way better than surrey's!. Loud, fun environment. large menu, had the tex mex slammer and the jewish cajun with a side of potato pan cakes. it was all good, although the amazon woman who lords over this place is a little terrifying.

Kids fav. As for me, the crushed ice is my favorite, but my 8yr old LOVES this place.. she has 2 t-shirts and would eat at slims for every meal if i let her:) we love the laid back atmosphere and trendy staff... thanks slim's!

Great breakfast. Typical diner setting, trendy staff, vintage music.

Favorite breakfast joint in town. Slim Goodie's puts Camellia Grill to shame. Who cares if it's open less?

Anything with chili on it is the jam. Great place to take vegetarians/vegans - ask for a tofu scramble.

Very goodie. Awesome breakfast & super friendly staff. a favorite.

Had breakfast here on my very first day in new orleans. the "jewish coonass" was most delicious. the garden in the back is unexpectedly beautiful.

Good and original menu but overpriced.

Great eatery. Have dined there many times. Last time I was there I sat at the counter. I watched the cook prepare meals. He was amazing to watch.

Awesome breakfast! Eggs were fabulous. Not runny at all. Bacon was crisp, not greasy. Good coffee. Good wait staff, very friendly. Could have done without seein the picture of Obama on the wall, but the good breakfast made up for it! Must go when in new Orleans!

Destination Breakfast. Awesome breakfast spot. Items pop from the extensive menu, revealing a broad knowledge, and love, of food, without a whiff of pretension. The atmosphere is perfect for a modern diner, the staff is very personable and friendly in a very authentic way.

Maybe best breakfast spot in NOLA. Neighborhood cafe. Breakfast. Edgy, unique. Lots of tattoos. Best omelets in NOLA. So-so bacon.

About as good as Surreys.

Breakfast review. I've only eaten here for breakfast, but its a terrific value. The service is very good for the most part, and the food fresh and well prepared. I thought the waffles only ok.

Fun, happy breakfast. Happy funboys rejoice with happy fun breakfast goodness. Lots of tasty treats on the menu. I had a giant thing made with hash browns, chili, bacon and eggs. The Wife had a similar thing, but slathered with crawfish etoufee instead of chili. Both the etoufee and the chili were very good and home made. The biscuits were fluffy and sweet. We aksed for another one and our very nice waitress brought it right out, no charge.

Enthusiastic, friendly service and great prices. My only complaints: undercooked hash browns and no gravy for the biscuits! Where are we, Cleveland? In Slim's defense, the waitress said they used to make gravy but the staff would eat it before the customers got there, so they don't make it anymore. Solution: make more gravy! But given the huge menu, it's a forgiveable flaw.

A good breakfast spot.. This spot is two for two with me. Great when you need a little grease after a long night. (n.b.: bring cash or a personal check. No cards are accepted. An ATM is in walking distance, however. Also, no alcohol is served so don't come wanting a mimosa or bloody mary.)
Chez
Sweet!. I love just about everything on the menu, but the Sweet Potato Pancakes are the best!!!

...it’s a bit surprising it took me this long to get around to the local staple that is Slim Goodies diner. I guess it doesn’t help that their summer hours put them closing at two, and my mornings seem to start later and later. But it’s not all too hard to get my motivated to grab a plate of hot breakfast, so I decided to saunter on down while I could still say “Good morning” and have it be applicable. Winging it down Magazine Street The place is known for sporting a comfy, hole-in-the-wall diner atmosphere, with retro fixtures and Polaroids of locals, staff, and regulars papering the walls

So, it was definitely hit or miss. If you're going, don't bother with the tofu scramble. Get the veggie chili, and be sure that you have some time to spare, because this place is slow.
Dinnola
He also got a side of bacon his he claimed to be some of the best bacon he ever had, as you can see he ate it all before I could take a picture. I should add, the coffee w

They have a fantastic breakfast menu, and the Veggie Slammer, as it states on the menu, is a killer cure for a hangover.

Just great no frills with a touch of funk - do it yourself - and - don't be late
