Review Dick & Jenny's - New Orleans

Mike Chicago
5 stars. Yes. FOOD, service, employee personality, in my neighborhood, all together, add up to A WINNER. The girl who would be my girlfriend and I have been walking by Dick and Jenny's for months, saying "We should try this", but kept walking by. Finally (and thankfully), we did. It's clean, nice atmosphere, not the greatest decor, but ...ok. The servers were polite, friendly, engaging and appreciative of compliments. THE FOOD: Started with a fried green tomatoes appetizer. It comes with a couple of (cold) shrimp and remoulade. The fried green tomatoes were some of the best I've tasted. Light breading, tart, sweet tomato flavor, excellently done to light brown perfection. The shrimp were peeled, and remoulade was excellent. An impressive start. I had the beef short ribs for an entree. Described on the menu as "Braised boneless angus beef short ribs, sauteed chard, garlic mashed potatoes and port wine demi-glace". Yes. It delivers on flavor. The short ribs just pulled apart, no knife needed. Soft, tasty, packed with deliciousness. The mashed potatoes were excellent. The garlic was not overpowering and with the demi-glace was awesome. The chard added a touch of bitter that balanced the sweet of the demi-glace. Satisfaction. Well worth the $26. The girl who would be my girlfriend had the Eggplant rollatini. The eggplant was thinly sliced, and rolled around a mix of ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan, wild mushroom and garlic. A delicious tomato-vodka sauce is spooned on top (not swimming in it). Kind of reminded me of manicotti with eggplant instead of pasta being the vessel to hold the ingredients. An excellent dish if you're carb-conscious. This is a great tasting dish. As a side, we had the Sambal-honey roasted brussel sprouts with smoked pork belly. Let me take a second to close my eyes and retaste it in my mind. Mmmmmm. Can't say enough. The best, most flavorful dish of the night. Which is not to take away from any of the other dishes we had. I could have eaten a bowl of this. For dessert, we shared a strawberry panna cotta. Light, smooth mouthfeel, and a subtle sweet taste. Perfect palate cleanser and end to a perfect meal. We told 2 servers how great the food was and they were appreciative of the compliments and said how good it feels to hear it. I stopped by the kitchen and thanked them for a great meal. Dick and Jenny's quickly became one of our favorite neighborhood places.

The decor, adorable. The service, outstanding. The food was amazing! A different take on seafood favorites, such as the crab topped fried green tomatoes appetizer. I was impressed with every bit of this experience!

I had the honor and the privilege to find this place while I was working in the area. They allowed me to do a little work around their establishment, as they continually reinvest to make this place a true Haven 4 authentic Cajun Creole food. I also got to spend time in the kitchen and watch MERLIN CREATE HIS MAJESTIC MENUES!! With is lovely wife in the middle of this tapestry she would cut and slice and dice and set up the dishes with the most eye a creativity a plate has ever presented. Waving her tools like a magic wand the rest of the delightful staff working in unison to have the food ready for the food servers to deliver these artistic feast to the many customers sitting around the tables.in the awesome authentic dining areas. smiling faces or mouths wide open eyes glistening

Merlin was an amazing host and chef and Sammy took great care of us, as our waiter. The food, sigh, so lovely. Complex flavors that are still comforting.
Allison Marley
See Sammie! Incredible server and so knowledgeable regarding the local area. Love him! The food was perfection too. Must experience!
Jill Unruh
The service was excellent and the fried green tomatoes with shrimp romaloude was fabulous, as well as the oyster fritters and crawfish beignets.
Alex Geriner
Ate dinner tonight with a group of friends tonight and it was incredible. The food was so tasty and perfect. I had the drum and my friends ordered a variety of other dishes from the menu. Sammy was our server and he made the night. Super fun guy that was very attentive and on top of his game. I love this place because it’s a local’s place that does quality Louisiana cooking the right way!

Being that our names are Dick and Jenni this was a must stop for us! Booked through open table, seated promptly. Our waitress however definitely needed a night off, career change, attitude adjustment or all of the above. She's the only reason I'm not giving 5 stars. The chargrilled oysters were different than anywhere else I've had and surprisingly very good!! We almost ordered more!! The cornbread was really yummy as well!! I didn't have my reading glasses and lo and behold, they brought a bag full to choose from. Genius!! The main entrees were delicious!! My friends got a fish order, I don't even like fish but it was actually really good!! There wasn't a bite of food left I don't think. We'll be back for certain, hopefully with better service though.
Casey Mclennan
The food was absolutely fantastic. Our server Melissa was kind and very enthusiastic during the entire experience. We went looking for an authentic New Orleans experience and these folks delivered. Their housemade pasta was the best I've ever had. I'm so happy that we stumbled on this gem.
Jenee Patterson
Super happy we came here. Josh was the best server I have had in a long time. The chef came out said hello and made a fantastic dinner. Could not be happier! Also great wine list with very fair prices
Jason Calmes
A staple of the nice, casual dining around New Orleans. The food is excellent and the feel is homey. It's an easy drive and there is sufficient parking in the area. On nights with a wait, the space is accommodating and you can get drinks on your tab.
David K.
Food was very good, service was polite, pleasant and efficient. It was very busy on Friday and Saturday nights of Jazz Fest - make reservations and expect a bit of a wait for food to arrive on a busy night. Wagu filet mignon with truffle mashed potatoes was delicious, scallops were wonderful. Crab cake was not quite as good. We've been here many times and will definitely be back!

Wife and I had a great experience for our first restaurant in NOLA. Staff was warm and welcoming. The host brought us champagne to celebrate our arrival as new folks in town! Food was delicious. The blackened drum and Tchop are highly recommended, as is the banana cream pie. Thanks to all at D&J!
Lisa StCyre
The food was great and the service was phenomenal. Can't wait to return.

This place was highly recommended by a friend so I gave it a try. Nice cozy atmosphere and a friendly helpful staff. I chose the fish which was cooked well but somehow lacked the flavor and spice I hoped it would have. I'd be willing to give it another try next time I'm in town and hope to have a much more memorable meal.
Bennie Good
Service was nice, thanks Carey. Crab cake was superb. BBQ shrimp a little disappointing.... More of a roux based shrimp and grits. Gin and tonics didn't come with a lime. When I asked for one, I was given two tiny slices.
Margaret Adkins
Cute spot with delicious food and attentive service. Try the brisket...it’s melt in your mouth delicious.
Michelle Wolfe
The best food and service I’ve ever had! We went during happy hour and that was awesome too! Loved everything about this place! You set the bar high the rest of our trip!
Joan Schirle
Mother's Day Brunch was wonderful in every way--the food was excellent, the staff friendly and welcoming. The omelets were tasty, the organic grits fantastic, the mimosas delightful. Thanks to Chef Merlin for a great start to our day!
Rob Meyer
A great New Orleans dining experience in a “neighborhood kitchen.” Great food all night, wonderful wine list and cocktails, and superb service!
Nathalie Dubois
Really good food , I had the beets salad that was incredible and the famous Merlin Crab cakes, that was amazingly delicious ! Merlin, you are a great cook! I highly recommend your restaurant.
Patti Mawn Alley
Our first time here, had recommendation from a friend and everything was perfect! Service was above and beyond, drinks were perfect, food was amazing ... were empty plates across the table. Would recommend to anyone!! Find time to introduce yourself to the chef Merlin, who is now the new proud proprietor.
Stacey Panepinto
Amazing food!! The best corn bread I have ever had. Never knew chicken could taste so good ! Great dining experience.
Roberta Lamonica
Food was good. We were there at 5:30 for the 5-7p $6 dollar appetizers. We ordered 3 off the chalk board and were charged $9 dollars each. We also ordered shrimp and grits appetizer and got a dinner size portion.Everything is separate and the bill adds up very quickly. Drinks are very expensive

Just walking out of Dick and Jenny's fuming and upset on what is our first evening in NOLA. As I write this I am aware our review is going to be an exception to the great reviews it has. We know. We checked the reviews when we decided on this restaurant. Food took over one hour to arrive so we had every right to complain after 30 mins of no news from the kitchen, especially when we had a 2 year old with us. We were seated at 8:45. Ordered around 9pm and were served at 10:10 (mind you, the restaurant closes at 10:00pm) to an annoyed table by the chef himself his own drink in one hand and one of entres in the other with half an apology. The gentleman who accompanied the chef asked us "What can we bring you to make it up to you?" I said we are not complaining because we want complementary food or desserts. Marlin says to him, "They don't want anything, she just want us to listen to her. She just wants to vent." with nonchalance and bitterness in his voice and simply walks away. Who talks to patrons who pay $30 an entre to be talked to in this manner? Our server was really sweet who bore the brunt for an absolutely unorganised kitchen. They did bring us a complimentary crab cake for the four of us because they didn't have chicken for the little one which they tried to use as one of the kindest thing could've done for us - well it's the least anyone would do. The most unpleasant of it all the was the arrogant and condescending attitude of chef Marlin who thought he did us a favour by bringing us his overpriced food over an hour late that we paid for in full. Thank you, Chef Marlin for your permission to let me "vent". I wish you a good night.

The bartender we had tonight was spectacular. He was a younger gentleman and made my Bittersweet Bellini so perfectly. I came to New Orleans to have a good drink. I had to go uptown to Dick & Jenny's to have the perfect drink and a very memorable experience. Thank you Mr. Bartender. I didn't catch your name but you were working Friday the 13 at 7pm you sir truely are a gem.
Sandra Wilson Brooks
Service was good, chargrilled oysters divine, the drum was flaky & flavorful! Will definitely be a go-to place in the future!
Mark Terry
The chargrilled oysters are to die for! We went for the special fish of the day. It was fantastic too!
Tiffany Walker
Loved the food and the staff were amazing price was a little high #repfromaus
Melody Morris Williams
Quaint creole cottage with an intimate setting. The blackened drum with crawfish risotto was delicious.
Blayne Bergeron
Absolutely Extraordinary Delicious dinner with spectacular service. A fantastic dining experience!
Emmy Thompson
It was one of the best meals we had in New Orleans! Definitely the best off the quarter! Make sure you get a reso as we didn't but they did their best to get us a seat at the bar. 2 thumbs up (actually, 5 stars up) for Dick and Jenny's!
Hance Myers
We had an absolutely beautiful and exceptional family dinner last night. The staff was excellent but the food was amazing. Seafood Cheesecake, Chargrilled Oysters and Shrimp & Grits as appetizers were all incredible. Drum and Pork as main dishes were exceptional, finished off with Bread Pudding. Will be in my rotation from now on when back in NOLA!
Kari B.
We were so disappointed Bec we had heard wonderful things. We made reservations outside but upon arrival, we were told that area was closed. Their drink specialties were limited; couldn’t make a chocolate martini. Best thing on the menu are the chargrilled oysters. 10 out of 10! But the rest of what we ordered? Terrible. Someone must’ve forgotten to season the $52 filet. No flavor and so bland, in bad need of salt. Boudin balls were just okay; I’ve had better. Fries were good. Gumbo was more like a stew and the rice to gumbo ratio was off - needed way more rice! Will be surprised if this place is here in a year.
Maddie
Great food, not sure if it's worth the price - "delicious, but a little boring for the money" was my family's catchphrase for the night. The risotto balls and the blackened drum with crawfish risotto were fabulous! The blueberry panna cotta was also ridiculously good. However, the squash pomodoro was pretty bland and needed the addition of the (very good) shrimp and there wasn't a single wine bottle under $32 - a common thing in NOLA but a little disappointing! (Especially since our white wine was warm....) Mostly delicious, but not if you're on a budget!

Great place and definitely lived up to our expectations. Service was exceptional as well. The atmosphere was perfect. Would definitely recommend the special crawfish cheesecake appetizer.

This place has changed ownership, and it's apparent. Looks a little more trendy and not as rough around the edges as the old owners had it. The filet was TINY. My partner had the lamb, which was good and a better portion. $6 for bacon collard greens. $33 for a tiny filet that was just cooked in wine (not the classic Roquefort cheese sauce they used to have). $24 for char-grilled oysters, which were tasty but imported from the new owner's other Italian restaurant in Houma. Not your typical NOLA fare. ended up paying over $100 with tip and only had water to drink. I´m not sure we'll be going back. The food was good, but it's overpriced for the portions you get. It also felt like it has lost some of the neighborhood charm. They turned the back of the restaurant (used to be a waiting room) into a dining room, which may mean that the new owners just want to shoehorn people in there and make more money. Our waitress was nice enough, but a little spacey. The manager was very attentive, as he probably should be. All in all, the new owners may be killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
Karla Ard Rather
Chicken & sausage gumbo was very good. The black drum had way too much red pepper. Overwhelming pepper on fish is NOT good. The risotto and asparagus sides were fine.

UptownLifer. I really wish this place would invest in a parking area. they are terrible neighbors which has caused crowding and loitering in the neighborhood. Staff, take the bus! Guest, your best bet is a taxi. No where near being a neighborhood restaurant, just a fashion some feel they must partake.
Fleur De Lis
Used to Love It. I used to love this place. You really couldn't go wrong with anything you ordered. Now it feels like a shadow of its old self. The food was fine...nothing great. And the server was grumpy and slow. If I'm not mistaken at one time the staff had ownership in the place, but I'm not sure that's the case anymore. Our server was grumpy and he even warned us that he'd be grumpy. And last but not least...this place used to offer an affordable fine dining experience. I think the prices are definitely high for what you get these days. I do hope they get their act back together and return to being a great neighborhood restaurant.

Good when they are open. Twice now they are closed during their posted business hours for Saturday. We have been turned away 3 times for weekend brunch even though we arrived during posted business hours. It's 1:15 on Saturday and the doors are locked! After the 4th time of no service we will have to reconsider going again.

Split Decision. We took some friends visiting from Colorado to dinner Friday night, not knowing that there was a new chef at the helm. The menu was slightly different but the food was still amazing. We dined here with a large group a year or so ago for a birthday and everything was so wonderful, we wanted to share this gem with our visitors.<br/>The delicious food couldn't make up for the horrible service we received. We were a party of 6, so we ordered several menu items to share, plus a bottle of wine, cocktails and beers. Not sure if our hipster waiter decided we were going to be cheap tippers because we were sharing items, but as soon as we ordered our entrees, we were left alone for the most part. Dirty appetizer plates were left for the entire meal. He never checked to see if we wanted another round of drinks, we had to wave him over. He checked on us once after entrees were delivered and we never heard from him again. It was very clear that we were celebrating a person's birthday and dessert was never offered. We were his last table in the dining room and sat there with no drinks, no dessert staring at him while he had the bartender make him a cocktail and they shared a laugh during their discussion about their post work plans. I finally had to verbally summon him to our table so we could get the check. He was on top of it then, eager for us to pay. After his fake banter about being from New Orleans, etc, which he isn't, he again went back to his cocktail at the bar and waited for us to exit. We will never return here because of his service or lack of. What an embarrassment to bring our out of town friends here and have them treated like this on their birthday.
Holcaf
Two stars (max). The food was very mediocre. It did not live up to expectations. I ordered the shrimp special and it tasted like unseasoned canned tomato sauce poored on top. The shrimp were the size of a quarter and those were the big ones. Had it not been for the corn bread, I would have left hungry. Very disappointing. I won't go back.
Paula Cuccia
My sister and I recently dined here and EVERYTHING was fabulous. Service, food, atmosphere, and company. We enjoyed everything and the next table enjoyed everything, too. I will be bringing any out-of-town guests here to dine.

Horrible!! Don't go!!
Localyokel1976
It had been some years since I had dined here & I am the one who has been missing out. A sensational culinary show. The chicken & rice soup w/ tarragon was in a class of its own. The escargot app is exquisite. Great service. I can't say enough about my dining experience earlier. <br/><br/>A+
GirlsGoneFoodie
Grand Slam!. A welcoming ambiance accompanied by a delicious array of dishes! Jules, our waitress, was informative, friendly and very attentive. Today my Foodie friend and I had the bruschetta (goat cheese with basil, diced tomato, fried capers, chopped red onion and cold smoked salmon) which was simple and divine. The kitchen bread knife gets a good workout as you9 insure you get all the goodness off the cheese board! The Carpaccio, served with arugula, capers, lemon, shaved parmigiano was good but tough in certain sections. My friend ordered the Gumbo (andouille sausage, chicken and shrimp) as her second course and it had uniquley distinct flavor and was excellent! One of the better gumbos we've had in the city. For our entrees we ordered the Raviolini (black truffle Raviolini, jumbo lump crab meat and Fontina cream sauce) which was a small portion but perfectly served according to the richness. We also ordered the braised short rib with bourbon au jour, served with roasted brussel sprouts and smashed garlic potatoes--this was a FULL plate of goodness--but since we had already thoroughly tantalized our taste buds, there was some to bring home. Tradition called for a shared dessert, which was the bananas foster bread pudding with chocolate rum sauce--warm and rich to the last bite!! We'll be returning to for another great meal for sure, and the GM was glad to hear this when he rounded at our table at the beginning and end of our meal.

Enjoyed the experience Alt.... Enjoyed the experience <br/>Although scared of the new owner ship I ventures to Dick and Jennys to see what the new menu holds <br/>I was presently surprised to see my old favorites such as fried oysters and the stuffed pork on the menu as well as many great additions. In a single statement Dick and Jennys has taken a turn for the better I will be back and tell everyone to do the same

I don't get it. food was average. prices waaaaayyyyyy too high. botched steak and bland seafood. maybe it was just a really off night.
Edie Hagens
I have eaten at Dick and Jenny's twice in the past week if that tells you anything about the quality of their service and food! From their fried green tomatoes and barbecue shrimp starters to their braised ribs that fell off the bone, I can't say enough about how fabulous this place is for true foodies! The service was impeccable both times I visited, even on a Saturday night during a convention that brought 35k visitors to NOLA. Dick and Jenny, our hat is off to you!

Top 5 in NOLA. Went here last night for my Mom's birthday. This is a place you would definitely want to make a reservation, just a heads up. The waitress was great, our glasses never got half empty. The dining room was busy too. Great wine and cocktail menu. For appetizers we had the fried oysters and fried green tomatoes w/ shrimp, both super fresh and fried to perfection. I had the vegetarian lasagna, it was creamy and the vegetables were so fresh. Seriously the best vegtarian dish I've had since moving to NOLA last summer. Mom had short ribs, meat fell off the bone and was nothing short of delectable. Desserts, whoa. They seriously just raised the bar. My daughter had the ice cream sundae that consisted of 2 chocolate chip cookies that were larger than her head with vanilla creole creamery ice cream in between and hot fudge on top. The waitress described the bread pudding as yumminess, she was right. Overall, this is now in my top 5 restaurants here in NOLA. Hands down. Looking forward to eating her again, and again.

Pathetic excuse for customer service. Our krewe had pre-parade brunch here last yr and wanted to return this year. We were told by the owner, "We aren't opening until noon." We tried to persuade him by explaining we're a party of at least 12. He said, "Well, you can come at 11:30, but don't expect food until noon. Also, we're putting u in the back...AND we'll be cleaning up around you." Reaaaallly?? Here's two tips...don't rest on your laurels and go buy an etiquette book. You're did us a favor acting so unacceptably rude. We now have a new fav hangout...Martinique Bistro.
Lee
The food was terrible. Our table ordered gumbo and tomato soup that was inedible. My po-boy bread was stale. The house dressing had no taste. In fact none of what we ordered had any flavor. They comped our food.
Steven Jesse
One of the city's best. I've only lived in Nola a few months. One of my coworkers recommended the place when i first moved here and I'm glad they did. Still the best food I've eaten so far.
Kelsey
Meh. Food was okay. But it was way over priced. Like wayyyyyy over priced. Almost everything on the menu should've been $10 - $15 less.<br/><br/>I wouldn't go back
NOLAfoodie
Uh. Maze. Ing!! Go!! I know it's out of the way from the French quarter, but it's not too far from the all of the shops on magazine and only a block from Tipitina's so take the time to leave the quarter! (It's only about a 10 min cab ride.)I've been here numerous times and I've NEVER been disappointed in anything I've ordered. That says a lot! Service is great, but make a reservation to speed it up!
Donna
What an awesome dining experience! I would go back today if I could. I had the stuffed pork tenderloin. The pork was stuffed with goat cheese, pine nuts, sun dried tomatoes, and cooked to<br/>perfection. With the pork I had the most delicious, creamy cheesy grits and braised cabbage. The cabbage has a wonderful hint of vinegar. It was a truly great meal!

Dick & Jenny's Very Good. Four of us went to dinner last night and we had a great time. The appetizers we ordered were the Savory Roasted Pablo Pepper & Pepperjack Cheesecake – with Smoked Jalepeno Aioli and Fried Green Tomatoes & Shrimp Remolade – Fried Green Tomatoes Topped with Gulf Shrimp tossed in Stacy’s Remolade & Red Pepper Aioli. Both were very good. The entree's were Gulf Fish Bouillabaise, Stuffed Pork Tenderloin – Goat Cheese & Pine Nut Stuffed Pork Tenderloin with Braised Cabbage, Goat Cheese -Thyme Grits & a Roasted Red Pepper Balsamic Vinaigrette, Abita Braised Beef Short Ribs – With Mac & Cheese, Brown Butter Sautéed Brussels Sprouts & a Spiced Bourbon Demi-Glace and Duck Confit & Louisiana Alligator Sausage – Duck Confit Leg Quarter & Alligator Sausage served with Spaghetti Squash, Southern Greens & a Tangy Orange-Chili Glaze. All the entrees were very good. I have had better short ribs at Del Porto in Covington who cooks them in a red type sauce making them juicier; but otherwise, the short ribs were good. Our server was outstanding. She was low keyed and attentive at the same time. The restaurant has a policy of not doing separate checks so that was a small inconvenience.
Drucie
Great experiences here. ask for bru as your server & try the bouillabaisse... you won't be disappointed.

Disappointing
ImKindaHungry
Had dinner there tonight. Amazing experience. The escargot was the hands down favorite at the table. Beat fried green tomatoes I've yet to have in the city as well. Totally worth the money. The only thing I was a little disappointed in was the service. The server had a very indifferent attitude towards us and made us feel a little rushed. But the food was so good that I would definitely go back and just hope for a different server.

Consistently good, but know their strengths. After another memorable evening at D&J's, I got curious and checked if anyone had actually ever clicked 'dislike' on their Urbanspoon.<br/><br/>I dined here most recently in late April 2012. I found the same patterns here that I have pretty much every time:<br/><br/>1. Their appetizers/small plates are probably their best strength. Order at least two different ones.<br/>2. Their cheesecake appetizer once again came out piping hot with a delicate crust that makes me consider just ordering the whole pie and calling it a night.<br/>3. They don't seem to mark their wine up as much as any other competitor in town. I appreciate this immensely.<br/>4. When it comes to entrees, the pork and duck options are likely going to trump the seafood options. They have everytime for me. D&J's fish tends to be less flavorable compared to the pork/poultry/beef, their scallops weren't that memorable the time I had them (in 2010), and their BBQ shrimp this last time (2012) was overcooked.<br/>5. I have never had better grits anywhere in the city. Dante's comes very very close, but if there's grillades and grits on the menu at D&J's, you might be kicking yourself if you don't order it. Who knows next time it will be on the menu.

Local Favorite. LOVE this place!<br/>Small, classy, fairly casual place for an amazing dining experience. Great food, unique dishes on a seasonal menu, quality service every time I've been...<br/><br/>They do not take reservations, but have a nice, large enclosed patio area with cocktail service where you can wait for your table. Turns are usually pretty quick, although I've never felt rushed thru a meal. <br/><br/>Not the place to take 20 people from your church group, but a great place for a nice dinner with your signifigant other, mom & dad, old friends, etc.
IronDuke
Real deal. With its eclectic decor, back porch waiting area, and charming wait staff you know you are in NOLA. Menu is a great mix of Southern, Cajun, and Creole, with a few twists (soup of the day was a Thai recipe). Started with a "Buffalo Soldier" bourbon-based mixed drink. Fried oyster appetizer with spicy remoulade was tasty. Entree of braised lamb stew over grits was different than I had pictured but was great. Overall, authentic, unpretentious experience.
Newt
Good Local Place. Out of the way from most places you'd try when visiting New Orleans, but it's great food. Fried oysters were superb, and everyone at our table who tried the pork said it was fantastic.
Dragon Tamer Ray
Dicknasty. Scrumtralescent meal and cocktails with liberal portion size.<br/>make me wanna say GOOD LAWD!
Layla
Best meals. Some of my best meals have been at Dick & Jenny's--the food is consistently amazing, and the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting.
Katie
Haven't had a bad dish yet. I love this place. BYOW!
AJ Warhol
Great spot!!!. What a great spot!!! I love the decor, wine list, food, service. We went the day they changed their menu (they do a seasonal menu and change 4 times a year) and the duck dish I ordered was by far the best I have ever had!!! I will be back
Applicious
First time last weekend. We had the salmon bouillabaisse and the filet of beef with lobster and Brie. For an appetizer, we had the corn fried oysters and eggplant. I rate all these items with 5 stars, but i give the service 10 stars! Our server, Christie, was amazing! She was friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. The combination of delicious food and excellent service will bring us back for all of our special occasions!
Charlie
Good lawd good!. I'd been thinking about eating here for years and finally pulled the trigger. So glad I did! My girlfriend and I had one of the best all around meals I've had in quite a while, and Dick & Jenny's vaulted itself into my "top 3" of New Orleans list. There's nothing not to like about the place: It's folky, low-key and unpretentious--yet classy--digs just down the road from Tipitina's is a manifestation of everything I love about this city. Our service was impeccable, and the barkeep makes a mean drink. Everything we ate was top-notch, but one thing stood out as possibly a top-15 dish of a lifetime: the fried drum hot-pot. Holy s*%t. Really like a cross between a hotpot, thai green curry, and a creole gumbo, this was one of those flavor combos that you just have to try. The drum was incredibly fresh, and its saltiness played so well off of the sweet, sour, and spiciness of the curry. All of the calimari, crawfish, and bits of other seafood in the hot-pot really put this dish over the top as an absolute must try.
Chip
Such a treat!. Everything i have ever had here is outstanding! Main dining room tends to get pretty loud so its a better place to go with a group of friends to laugh and cut up than it is for a quiet romantic dinner. Expect to wait at least an hour on the weekends but its worth it.
Penny Lane
I. Love. This place!! Worth the wait. It's a fun atmosphere. I've never had a bad experience there. If you don't believe in waiting for good food, stay home.
Crawfish
I agree with the previous reviewers about the inexcusable LONG wait to be seated....no food is worth that wait time. We filled up on appetizers and drinks during our two hour wait, so that we were too full to even want dinner. I think it's a case of artistic, creative people who have no clue how to run or manage a business. Needless to say, I won't return unless they revamp their entire seating and reservation protocol.
Tyler Durden
Almost But Not Quite. Sorry to say, we had a disappointing night. Arrived about 7 to learn that we'd have almost a 2 hour wait. The bar was filled, so we were directed to a seating area and told a waitress would be taking drink orders. A single waitress worked the room. She was gone a lot and returned seldom. The holding pen we were put in had yardsale furniture and cheap, uncomfortable chairs. The drinks were good, but....<br/><br/>A "no reservations" policy makes no sense. For anyone; neither the restaurant nor the customer. Lots of people left when they learned of the wait. We tired after an hour and hit the door. So did others. This can't be what the owners want, can it?<br/><br/>It's possible to have a laid back atmosphere and still give good service in a comfortable setting. Others do it. D&J's? Not so much. <br/><br/>The food is good and the people are very nice. In a way, that makes the shortcomings more glaring and more frustrating. If it's to be a real reataurant and not a neighborhod cutiousity, it needs to be run like one. They've already done the hard part, this should be easy.

DRINK THE WINE!!!. Went for lunch today (my 1st time having lunch there) & was VERY pleased. As always, the easy, comfortable atmosphere was just what i wanted. For starters & had the mushroom cheesecake w/bleu cheese aioli (?). OMG!!! It was FANTASTIC!!! I was expecting something heavier & was very pleasantly surprised at how light & fluffy it was. For mains, I had the coronary (I THINK that's what it's called). Perfectly fried shrimp, yummy bacon & melted cheese... dressed with other fabulousness. It was HUGE, yet I managed to eat most of it. It was just too yummy to stop. The potato salad (served hot) was SO delicious!!! I didn't see THAT coming in potato salad!!! Lastly, I think that you actually MAKE money if you order from this wine list. It's a very nice selection... not a MASSIVE selection, but there is absolutely something for everyone on there. They have the best prices on wine that I have seen in, well, maybe, forever. Here's the trick... the more expensive the bottle, the better the bargain. If you know wine, then check out the list & you will see what I'm saying. Can't wait to go back!

On the fence..... Neither a like or a dislike from me.<br/><br/>Some of the dishes I've had at D&J's have been quite good. Fried green tomatoes come to mind. On the other hand, a couple of times, I've left D&J's with a $100+ dollar bill for 2 people and thought to myself...."you know, that wasn't all that great of a meal." I've heard that they have a new chef now and I'm willing to try again though.<br/><br/>Get here early - they don't take reservations unless you have like a party of 6+ or something.

Love every bite. The only down side is the wait. Reservations only for tables of 5 or more. 1 hour can easily turn in to 2+. Once you get to the table it's on. Food is wonderful with a wide variety of menu items. The menu is definitely rooted in soul/creole cooking, but takes it to places that make this one of the best dinners in any town. Service is friendly and quick. Wine list is good. I think it was worth the wait. A good strategy is to get there early, or ask enough friends to get a reservation.

Tried all three apps and three different lunch entrees. Almost every bite was incredible. The stuffed pork tenderloin was the best pork entree I have had in a while. Service was good and for what we had, the value was excellent.

Always a great meal. NOW OPEN FOR LUNCH.

Loved It. Started with an excellent gumbo (and then had one of the best dishes I can recall having "Gulf Seafood BBQ Stew - Bronzed Louisiana Flounder & Pan Roasted Shellfish in an Abita Amber-Rosemary Stew with Stone Ground Grits & Cilantro Crouton"<br/>A top 10 dish if I've ever had one; the seafood broth in the stew was completely off the charts...

Overpriced and unoriginal. Good ambience and strong drinks were the most redeeming qualities.

Absolutely the best food in NOLA. The food was delicious and interesting but not gimmicky. It did not take the waitress 10 minutes to explain the ingredients, thank goodness. The portions were generous. We had the crabcake and eggplant appetizer, scallops and shrimp, and shrimp and grits. Go here for the food - only. If you are looking for a "fancy" restaurant go somewhere else - for the price it is very busy and casual.

We like this place and always have great meals an service. Go early if you don't want to wait, they won't take reservations.

A place to avoid. Dick and Jenny's is supposed to be casual and fun. It is actually tacky and sloppy, which is not the same thing. Little attention seems paid to food quality or presentation. Best things about my most recent meal was the wine and the butter, items for which this kitchen can claim no credit. Every other component was about as poor as I've ever been served in a New Orleans restaurant. Portions were very small in relationship to the price, but that was fine because the quality was so poor I was happy to have little on the plate. Upon leaving I actually had to go across the street to a grocery store and buy a bottle of Pepto Bismol to settle my stomach. Absolutely one of the worst meals I've experienced in over 25 years of dining in the city's better restaurants.

Fried Green Tomatoes. Thats all ya gotta know. This is a quaint spot just west of the warehouse district, and is one of my favorites. The entire menu offers up local dishes that makes it hard to pick. The wine list is full and completes the menu. Service is some of the best in New Orleans. Just start with the fried green tomatoes and remoulade and work your way down. You'll be glad you did.

Local New Orleans Flavor. My wife and I had dinner at this restaurant and found the food very good and the service pleasent and efficient. The flounder was excellent and the Dick and Jenny's sampler a good way to try several items. This would be a great place to take out of town friends to experience a typical quality neighborhood restaurant New Orleans is famous for.

A longtime fave. Contemporary Creole. Unique. Casual. Very good. (Entrees now $21-32). Great people. This was my favorite place in Uptown to take out of towners. Great servers, cool vibe, delicious, creative dishes.

Lovely.. Always a wonderful meal.

Take it from a New Orleanian. Dick & Jenny's is one of our favorites. When we are celebrating or entertaining tourists, this is where we go. The menu changes seasonally which keeps it interesting. Great atmosphere (casual~business casual) delectable desserts.

It is worth the wait. The staff is so friendly and the unusual setting make for a fun experience. Limited menu but very good food.
Food Hound
Food hound. I have a "no wait" policy I mean so many good restaurants why wait! Having said that Dick n Jenny's is the exception as long as it's not too long I go early avoid the rush. Aparizers are the best foe entrée I have gone with the Pork Tenderloin or the scallops save room for the srawberry cake. It is just a great place with good food and great staff

Dick and Jenny’s is located along New Orleans’ own Tchoupitoulas street, known for it’s old time New Orleans homes and traditional warehouse architecture. You could almost miss this restaurant, because it blends right in with the homes around it. Inside…homey decor. Reminds me of Grandma’s house…will it compare to grandma’s food?? Breads! Corn Fried Oysters, Southern Coleslaw, and Remoulade. Garlicky Escargot. Sauteed Escargot. Neuske Bacon and Mushrooms. Garlic Butter Reduction. Not your classic French-style escargot, but the touch of bacon and mushrooms was a nice surprise. . Duck Confit and Louisiana Alligator Sauce. Slow cooked duck confit leg quarter. Alligator Sausage w/ Spaghettie Squash, Southern Greens, and Tangy Orange-Chili Glaze. Abita Braised Beef Short Ribs. Decadent Mac & Cheese, Brown Butter Sauteed Brussel Sprouts. Spiced Bourbon Demi-Glace. Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sundae w/ Vanilla Creole Creamery Ice Cream. As you can see, the food was delicious! Very hardy a

Thanks to a Living social deals, I was able to eat a full dinner here for under $30 including tax and tip! Look for this bright corner by Tchoupitoulas and Napoleon: Dick and Jenny's walk down the side street (Not Tchoup) to this entrance: the entrance the decor inside was interesting. i liked the plates lining the walls: the lined walls when we sat down, the waittress brought out water and cornbread: i loved the glass jars for our cups cornbread was pretty good We started off with the escargot bowl appetizer. The garlicky escargot is served in a tiny bread bowl (like a bread roll) topped with a smoked mushroom and bacon in a creamy demi-glace. This was a very unique dish. The first time I've ever had something like this. The bacon reminded me of tasso ham, a spicy peppery smoked pork. The sauce was also strongly flavored in the same spicy and smoked manner; a bitter remoulade (a bit too salty

One of my favorites in the Big Easy. Tucked away in the Irish Channel in a old nineteenth century barge board cottage this is one of the places where the locals go for good eats and causal dress, no jacket needed here. Would put this place up against any in New Orleans and love taking people from out of town here. Food is amazing and service impeccable. Listed on Daily Meals “Top 10 places locals don’t want you to know about”. Salmon and Wild Rice Chowder Deep Fried Frogs Legs w/ louisiana crystal hot sauce butter atop southern coleslaw Stuffed Pork Tenderloin: goat cheese & pine nut stuffed pork tenderloin with braised cabbage, goat cheese -thyme grits & a roasted red pepper balsamic vinaigrette Veal Saltimbocca: milk-fed veal scaloppini, prosciutto, sage, fontina, and cauliflower puree Chocolate Creme Brûlée
