This place has been in business since 1953. Has the air of a well worn neighborhood bar. The gumbo is first rate and I have lived in New Orleans and eaten lots of gumbo. The wings and burgers are excellent and in a city where the signature dishes are ribs and the pulled pork sandwich Alex's excels with its ribs. Whilst dining, you are serenaded by two vintage jukeboxes with great selections of timeless hits.
A million beers there and a few of the GREAT Greek Burgers. Drove down from Nashville a month ago and had the ribs. OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! Who knew???? This is from a patron of Alex's since 1961, (3yrs 0ld).
As far as dry rub ribs go, Alex's was very good and far better than places like the overrated and over hyped Rendezvous, but the tender and juicy ribs are awesome in Alex's barbecue sauce. To describe exactly how the sauce taste is bit difficult for a novice like me, but Greek spices gives it a distinctive flavor that is unlike anything I had before.
Great burger and fries. A friend and I went for the Greek Burger. No tonly was the burger outstanding, the fries had a great seasoning on them. The beer was ice cold. A great experience overall.
Their "Greek Burger" is The Holy Grail of burgers. Period. It was absolute heaven to my taste buds. Forget Huey's. Rocky makes THE BEST BURGER in Memphis @ Alex's Tavern.
Best Hot Wings in Memphis. A few friends and I set out on a quest a few days ago to find the best hot wings in the city. We put together a carefully chosen list of the most popular Memphis wing joints, and visited 13 places in one day to find the best.
In the end, Alex's was the winner. We ordered the hot, and it had a flavor like no other. Not just spicy, there was a delicious taste, too. The meat was just slightly on the dry side (if I had to nitpick) and I'd like to have some flats to go along with the drummies. But when we added up all the scores, Alex's came out on top.
I've had the burgers here too, and they're delicious, and I hear the ribs and barbecue are good.
It's a dive bar, so if you're looking for a fancy place to hang out, go down to Germantown or something. This is where the locals go, and have been going for years and years because, as far as I can tell, it doesn't change much around here.
Get the wings. Trust me.
Best In Town Here's Why.... 1. Rocky. Plain and simple if you have the privilege of talking with him and asking about the history of the place and his life growing up working there with his dad you will see why the food is so excellent. One of the primary reasons to eat a burger and grab a beer here is the owner - a true Memphis legend.
2. Food. The burgers, wings (drummies only), ribs, gumbo, even steaks... everything I've had here is excellent. The setting of a classic dive bar with character (and comfy chairs) often hides the fact that Alex's Tavern has damn good food. I've even been here for special occasions and Rocky cooked a four course meal that was excellent.
3. Cold Beer. Good luck finding a better price and colder beer in town. The options are simple and classic like you'd expect.
4. TVs. Easily one of the best places to watch the GRIZZ, TIGERS or NFL in town. Easy to get in and out of and is always a great atmosphere for the big game.

Pro Tips: Cash only with ATM on site. Rocky does cook the best burger. If you happen to find someone else manning the grill, be sure to tell them how you like it and kindly remind them (especially if it busy) until it is done right. There is nothing wrong with sending your food back if it is not up to expectations in my opinion. Most nights you can find the police outside and inside enjoying a burger. Be sure to drink responsibly (or get an Uber home) and behave yourself. Enjoy and take friends.
Best burgers I've ever had!. We wanted some burgers for dinner tonight but I wasn't feeling Huey's tonight. I wasn't sure what to expect since I parked on the neighborhood side and walked in from the back. We ordered the Greek burgers with cheese and fries and greek style drummies with ranch. That's the first time I've ever finished a whole restaurant burger in one sitting. It was amazing! The burger was cooked perfectly with a nice crust. The drummies were so yummy and crispy too. The fries were crispy outside, melt in your mouth inside!!!! We've found my newest favorite burger spot! Maybe we'll try the ribs next!
Bar Food Greatness!. I've been dropping in for about 7 years, mostly for late-night take-out food orders. The go-to for me are their hot wings, and they are great. Hot n spicy, good n tasty flavor. Their original tasting Greek wings are great (Worcestershire sauce-like base, I think). Get the wings specially double-dipped gor a super new taste! The cheeseburger is great. The thick cut fries are great and seasoned mightily fine. The chicken tenders aren't my favorite...but they are good, too. What isn't great? The fact that, after eons of drop-ins, I have yet to try the ribs, shrimp, or gumbo. I hear they are all great, and I do not doubt it one bit. I highly recommend this place. Chill environment, awesome bartenders Rob and Johnny, HDTVs with sports or movies going, killer jukebox, college and midtown folk, young and some older...just a bad-ass bar. They have beer, too. Duh. Didn't mention that one. I really just go for the food. Trust me. Dig in!
Nice dive bar. Cash only, but they have an ATM. Burgers and wings were reasonably sized and priced. Limited draft list, but there's probably something there you'll like. Good conversations and friendly service.
Placed a pick up order via phone. The person taking the order was nice. I had never been to this place before. It’s your typical dive bar but it was packed on a Saturday late afternoon. FYI this is a CASH ONLY establishment. Maybe there is a sign in the building that I missed that said this but I definitely wasn’t told when I placed my order via phone. Paid $31 for cheeseburger and fries and about 7 small drummies. Seems a little expensive but maybe this is the typical price for dive bar food. I was never shown a receipt so I can’t tell you the price for each item. Food was fine.
Such a fun late night place. Burgers and wings were amazing. Has old jukeboxes and tvs for a fun hangout esp winding down for the night
Alex's was recommended by a local. Well outside of the tourist area, the owner was extremely nice. Excellent gumbo and wings. Would highly recommend for someone looking for an out of the way dive bar with excellent food and service
The food is AMAZING! Low key chill restaurant where you might run into a local celebrity or two …ran into Priscilla Presley here! Definitely NOT a late night bar or club bar if that’s what you are looking for this isn’t the place. The ribs and chili have won awards for best in Memphis!
Rocky runs the oldest family run dive bar in Memphis. Alex was his Dad and since he passed away, Rocky has made this place famous.
The winner of multiple national "Best Southern Bar" or "Best Dive Bars in America", you can't go wrong at Alex's. Most know they are famous for their "Greek Burger," but in recent years Alex's started winning awards for "Best Ribs," "Best Gumbo" and "Best Wings." Memphis Trivia: Alex's is the best spot to see an out of town celebrity who wants to be local for the night.
Simply put, Alex's has amazing food in a dive bar setting, run by the best Tavern keeper around. He doesn't take no sh!t from anyone, while treating everyone who comes in like family. Cold, affordable beer and surprisingly comfortable chairs that are hard to leave when the game is on. Use your manners and tip well. Rocky will take good care of you.
Owner and chef Rocky and bartender Marc treated us incredibly well on our visit. We were only visiting Memphis but they made us feel right at home. The wings and greek burger were great too visit if you love a dive bar
I'm not from Memphis, but I was right to assume the best ribs in the city wouldn't be anywhere near downtown. Locals assured me I made the right choice! Alex's Tavern was simply incredible: a must try! Rocky's food is second to none!
Great beer selection including local craft types. Phenomenal juke box. I love the Quik Poke game! We took some gumbo to go and it was fantastic! I will visit everytime I come to Memphis. Stay awesome, Alex's!
The perfect dive.
Food was delicious. Small helpful staff.
