Alex's Drive Inn

Was looking for a good gyro experience and today I found one. I could tell when I walked through the door that I was in the right place. 2 gyro rotisseries going and all brown and crunchy. The staff was older friendly guys who had been doing this for a long time. I asked the guy at the counter whats the best thing they had in the place and he immediately said The Gyro Plate. So when in Rome... We ordered and he told us to have a seat and in a moment our food was ready. A surprisingly large amount of food. The pita bread was soft and flavorful, the meat was not too salty or too garlicky or too greasy and the veggies were fresh. I liked that the meat was browned by the IR rotisserie and not fried up on the griddle. The parsley on the onions was refreshing as well. Large basket of fries that tasted like clean oil and potatoes. The tzatziki sauce was unique. Never had one like it. Yogurt based but, really different in a good way. The inside of the place was clean and smelled okay. And oh, they have their own home made giardiniera. Didn't try it yet but, I'll be back for something that requires a little of that on it.

Best gyros in town, and anything else you can order is just as delicious! I have been coming here since they transformed the old Beef Villa (I just aged myself there), and I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal here in over 30 years! On a side note, they do quite a bit to support the community, so I'm glad to see the community support them in return!

We are looking for another boosted chicken place and we were in the neighborhood so we went to Alex's. It was just before closing so too late for chicken but gave us the opportunity to order Gyros, fresh, and a salad. I have to say it was the best Gyro I had in a while. It was juicy and the bread was fresh and not just a dry PITA. Everything was good and will be going back for the chicken soon.

Still been a great place all these years...Alex turned 92 and still kickin it. (Pete) hail brother! Still rockin 🤘 nice to see ya still after 22+ years. They are still serving Great Gyros, Awesome Italian Beef and Savory Gravy Sandwiches. A McHenry Icon that's still standing strong. AAA+! A must! Glad to be a repeating customer - Never a bad experience. Take care guys.

This may look like a hole in the wall kind of place but its the one place that will get your order right every single time and you never walk away thinking "wow that person was rude". I love coming here and am never disappointed in the food. If I'm feeling indecisive they will help me pick something or suggest something new that I haven't tried yet. I highly recommend this place to any and everyone!!! (Also I've never gotten food poisoning from this place so go get some good grub!)
