I'm always in the area for business, and it's often suggested I find the bakery that makes those "transparent pies." Well I found it, and are they ever delicious? It's no wonder George Clooney loves the place. What makes a translucent pie so unique? It's the ingredients, or the lack thereof. They taste a lot similar to a sugar cookie, but in a custard-like pie form. The little pies are great for one person, then there's the whole pies for a small group. They do serve other baked goods, but if you're being honest with yourself, you came for the pie. Very friendly staff as well. I will be swinging in here from time to time!
I grew up in Maysville, so I was familiar with Magee's when it was down on Market Street. Saturdays were a treat because it meant a trip into town to the library and a stop at the Bakery for a transparent pudding or cream horn.
Now I'm grown and living in Nashville, Tenn., but a visit to Maysville still includes a stop at Magee's Bakery. The bakery may have moved, but neither the quality nor the flavor have diminished in the least.
It seems that transparent puddings, or tarts, are still a regional thing as I can't find them anywhere else, but they're known around the world, partly due to George Clooney's love of this rich dessert. He grew up in the area, and he's known to call in an order for shipping to one of his homes or the location of his latest movie for a little taste of home.
I think that's what they are to me as well -- a little taste of home.
My most favorite Bakery! A short 2 miles off the AA Highway in Orangeburg, Kentucky and well worth the stop. The Cream-Filled Horns are best I’ve ever tasted, all the different cookies, Cinnamon Crisps, etc. are incredible. Five-Stars every time!!!
I am from Maysville, and have eaten the Tarts all my life. Now live in Cincinnati, and when I need aTart fix , I have them sent to me.....Nothing like then. When my Uncle died the family put a tart in his casket, he loved them so. True story.
Always happy with my purchases from Magee's. Transparent tarts are my favorite! Wonderful bakery!!
Still to this day I’ve never had anything that comes close to some homemade tarts , I visited from west TN to see my grandparents an I always wanted to go to Magees.
