An intimate, eclectic and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Great food, good wine and friendly staff. Definitely try the Curried Mussels with Lemon Grass in a creamy sauce. It’s been a highlight of the menu since they opened.

Always a fantastic dining experience. Talk about their curried mussels with anyone traveling to Nantucket. Many great places to dine on the Island, but Fifty-six Union is still my favorite.

Delicious!! (and good with food allergies). Went after reading great online reviews and so glad we did! Hotel staff emphasized that it was outside of town so we would probably like something else, but it was no big deal and the walk was really enjoyable. Might take a cab if it's super cold or you're not very mobile. Outside of the building is nothing special, but inside is definitely a warm upscale feel. Ate in the front part of the restaurant near the bar and the ambiance was very enjoyable. Seated with drinks quickly. Didnt seem to mind our 5 year old dining with us even though it's definitely more if an adult restaurant. We have gluten, soy and dairy food allergies and had read positive info online about how they handle it. Sure enough, chef came out to talk with us about what we like, what my child might enjoy, etc and then crafted me a fluke filet lightly seared in almond meal instead of bread crumbs and put together a special small plate of chicken and veggies for our child. Thank you for this extra effort!! My hubby had the special lamb & spicy sausage burger and said it was outstanding! My fluke was excellent as well. This restaurant/meal and our meal/view at galley's were tied as our most favorite

Being a short distance away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Nantucket gives 56 Union a more neighborhood feel to it, which is a good thing. The atmosphere was vibrant, friendly and "local". The food and drinks were all fantastic, as was the service. The bar area was pretty cool too (look out for Wonder Woman behind the bar!) If we lived in the neighborhood this would be our go-to spot to walk over to. Highly recommended.
Sorry no pics! But the food and service is excellent. This post is during Covid and these folks have the outdoor dining experience dialed in. Deceptively small at first glance from the street. Once inside their is a main room/ tavern that leads to a long walkway.
From there your brought into another dining experience under a fixed tent, or walk a few steps further to eat in the garden with the bunnies! Great wine list we had the Scallops w sweet potato and I had the special Swordfish with Orzo and feta, amazing.
Great restaurant, our best meal on the island. The food is great and the service is better. The curried mussels were unbelievable and the Javanese fried rice was excellent. The whole family had a great meal, scallops, ahi tuna, and steak. Will definitely come back again.

Possibly one of the best dining experiences on the island (speaking strictly on their dinner service during the peak of the summer).
First off, this is not an el cheapo experience. Quite the opposite, really, but well worth it.
Also, if you have young kids, strongly consider going elsewhere. The restaurant is not anti-children but it's sheer nature does NOT make this a compatible option for small children. A specific, specialized menu combined with restaurant atmosphere may make this a challenging experience for kids.
The menu from year to year is always a permutation of last year's. Some menu items, e.g. the Javanese Fried Rice (by the way, the heat and no modification warnings for this dish, printed on the menu, are as absolute as they say) seem to be back every single time. But various seafood and red meat options do change pretty much yearly. Do note, the menu is not much more than, if I recall correctly, eight, maybe up to ten courses.
Not once have I had a bad dish. Always cooked to perfection. Possibly some of the best deserts I've ever had as well. Personal shout-out to the truffle frites (it's a starter). Also personal recommendation, the truffle frites are probably more suited for two people than one, just based on size. If you're looking for an individual starter, consider others or ask the server about size.
Also has a bar if you are just looking for drinks, but I can't speak from experience on this part.
Atmosphere is fantastic, dark and mellow. Servers are on point. Indoor and outdoor seating options. All in all, if you're looking for a dining experience, not just a meal, look no further.
Excellent creative menu and delicious food. The service was on point and the owner actually came to our table to share stories behind some of the recipes. Don't miss dessert. Make sure you try the mussels.
