Great little place, upstairs from Its Sugar. It is easy to miss the door if you aren't looking closely.
We tried the alu momo, classic chicken momo, chicken rice bowl and samosas and shared them as a group so everyone could try all the dishes. They were all wonderful! Staff was great. Small selection of beers and wine.
Warning: the small bottle of Badger Heat sauce that you can add is super hot!!
Went for the first time and I loved it! The food is Nepalese/Tibetan and was so flavorful and delicious. The flavors and way it is cooked reminds you of a welcoming home and comfort food served by your mom! Had the classic momo with chicken and beef. Highly recommend adding the jhol sauce to the dumplings for some extra deliciousness.
We ordered the Rice Bowl, described as "fragrant buttery wild rice pilaf with cranberries topped off with either juicy ginger turmeric chicken or tofu" and the Badger Momo (added Jhol Momo, so our Badger Momo dumplings came in a savory sesame based broth) and both dishes were amazing! I was blown away by the rice bowl, the combination of flavors were definitely something to write home about....maybe even several letters home.
Beautiful and charming view if you get a spot by the window--though the cafe itself is very beautiful. Overall I really love second-floor restaurants on State Street, they feel like hidden gems!
Also the owner (I believe) was serving several tables and also doing all the cooking, very impressed seeing as the food still came out quickly.
What a pleasant, pleasant surprise! Look I am a big Momos + Beer fan! Back in Delhi, have had countless evenings kicking back unlimited beer with friends along with unlimited, guess what, momos! Never found good momos outside Delhi really. There are awesome dumplings all around here sure but they aren't momos. Other reviewers have explained the difference quite well.
So I had the Chicken Momos with Jhol (and some without) with beer and loved it. The filling is spiced about right and you can always add that special kick from their own hot sauce.
Bonus: The owners are wonderful people, another reason why I love these independent, family owned establishments ... they have such unique character.
Excellent meal! Went with several friends to try something new close to campus on a weeknight. Once we placed our order, everything came out quick. Delicious momo of many flavors were shared around the table: beef, chicken, and bratwurst. Can't wait to go back!
I was going to go to eat at my usual dumpling place on state st. and then I remembered the HungryBadgerCafe also on state st. that I’ve been meaning to go to.
It’s easy to miss walking down the street. Partially because it’s upstairs and, I think, partially because “IT’S CANDY!” is downstairs being really obnoxious and overpriced. ...in my opinion.
Please seek the place out though.
The dumplings were beautiful and delicious.
I ordered the Alu and Veggie momos indecisive platter because I try to eat vegan.
Food was awesome! As was the environment and service.
If you haven't been here yet, do yourself a favor and stop in. I recently stopped in for a bite with my fiancee and I was very impressed. All of the food we had was delicious, warm, and flavorful. On top of that the staff and the owners are very friendly and make you feel right at home. Together my fiancee and I tried 5 dishes: the samosas, classic momo with jhol sauce (highly recommend the sauce!), Alu momo, 8 sister soup, and the campus chili. The rosemary roll that comes with the soup was my fiancee's new favorite roll. Every dish was excellent and there were plenty more options on the menu we'll be back to try later. Be sure to try the home-made Badger Heat hot sauce, but be careful! They have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options too!
Awesome Nepali food. The bar nuts had so much flavor. I loved the hot sauce they had so I bought one for myself and one as a gift. All-natural simple recipe that only has a few ingredients and tastes delicious on anything and especially in johl Momo.
