My family and I celebrated Mardi Gras at North of the Bayou last night and it was great! We love the way the place is decorated, the NOLA music being played and the way they had everyone order them be seated worked well! I tried the Gator Gumbo and it was delicious. My daughter had the red beans and rice and it was flavorful without being too spicy for a 7 year old to enjoy. My boyfriend enjoyed his jambalaya too. The only thing I was disappointed about was the sweet potato bread pudding. I’ve had theirs many times even just called in only that for a carry out and this time it was hard and dry beneath the sauce on top. I was disappointed. I’m sure it was just due to needing such a large amount to cater to the overwhelming crowd coming in for the holidays. I will be back!

I don't know how much food they give in the restaurant, but the to go portions are horribly small. The photo here shows the "large" portion of the jambalaya and etouffee. I would expect at least two meals out of a large, but this only served one. When we called in to see why they were this size the staff said they had recently reduced their take out size containers to keep in heat.

Nobody gets 5 stars Perfection is impossible but if you like flavor in your food and appreciate Cajun cuisine I would suggest it, ask for the smoked sea salt and cajun garlic seasoning, Brings it to the next level. their gumbo of the day rocks, good location, good food, good people and good beer, what more would you want? give it a shot, tell them the mower man sent you... They might even sell you a jar of that smoked sea salt to take home if you behave and ask nicely....

Came in for lunch on Tuesday. Was greeted by the bartender. Had the cheesecurds for an appetizer. The texture was awesome, but the sprinkling of seasoning on the batter after they were deep-fried wasn't super flavorful. The batter could use something else. The beer cheese soup was good. The pork stew was good. The crab enchiladas were amazing. Not too spicy. The stuffed chicken breast was good. The Chipotle Alfredo was tasty. The visual presentations of the food was beautiful. The server was friendly and attentive although he didn't know they menu super well. Next time I come, I'm trying all the desserts. The bartender wished us well on the way out. Will be back soon.

Overall, friendly staff and quick service can be found here. It's probably a better place to drink and hangout rather than a place to eat food. Portions are extremely small and often the dish has very little of its "star" ingredient. They used to have vegetarian options but looks like those has been axed. Beignets were over done, dense, and caked in powered sugar. They used to include a chocolate sauce with it but either they forgot or its been removed as an offering. Bold of them to compare it to Cafe Du Monte. Gumbo had very little meat to it and did not look like it had any okra at all. Ordered on Saturday night and smoked duck was the meat option. I did not find enough or even any smoked duck in there to say how it tasted. The medium was about 1 pint including the rice so you're getting just a few tablespoon of actual gumbo with your order. Same deal with the Jambalaya. The crab cake had little to no crab. It was more like a fried cake despite their menu saying it would have lumps of crab in it. Jambalaya pasta was the only thing that look like it was an actual entree, portion wise. Cheese curds had a unique seasoning on it so that was good but not enough to save this meal.

Don't judge a book by its cover. The food in this place is amazing. Even my son's chicken strips and fries were beyond expectations. Each dish had its own unique flavor and the presentation were beautifully done. Thanks and we'll come back next time we go through Madison.
