Great barbecue! Blind folded, it would be difficult to tell the difference between this joint and City Market barbecue. Quality like what you get in Lockhart, Elgin, Gonzalez... Hey, this is good ol' Texas slow smoked barbecue. Everything they serve is excellent; however, they do have a unique, different type of barbecue sauce (which is very good by the way); Seems to be mustard based with perhaps a little vinegar; Different and quite tasty. Good Brisket, Good Vibes?. Usually a bbq place makes sure the smoke vents out where the public can get a whiff. It's a pheromonal attractant to bbq lovers. However, I did not notice the quintessential meat and fire perfume until I entered the restaurant. You immediately know then that you are going to be leaving here smelling like a nicely smoked hunk of meat. Nothing wrong with that unless you work for the dog pound where you can expect a riot from the "inmates" after they get a load of you.
This place is cafeteria style so you place your order at the counter. Numerous choices for sides. The brisket was perfect and the sauce not bad though I am not overly found of a honey / mustard / vinegar tasting combination. The sausage . . . h-m-m-m. Maybe it was that it had been sitting under the warming lights too long as it was a bit dry and lifeless. Not a favorite. Potato salad was creamy with intermittent hunks of potato. I liked it as I did the flavorful pinto beans.
I can see why this place is usually in the top 50 bbq places for Texas. It is definitely not because of the hired help's demeanor though. The sour puss on both food servers indicated that they would rather not be there. And that you were just a distraction to be dealt with until they could go back to their daily cleaning, re-stocking, etc. duties. What a shame to get that kind of reception in a small town where one usually encounters smiling, friendly folks appreciative to gain your business.
Think I will probably head next door next time (as we actually did to sample their fare . . . and the food handlers were a little more friendly)
Terrific BBQ. After a few samples at the Shiner Brewrey, we made our way up to Luling for some central Texas barbeque. The combo plate with brisqet, chicken and two sides was very good. Brisquet was tender with good flavor. The chicken equal to the task. I'll be back again
Good BBQ. My wife and I have tried most of the places on the central Texas BBQ trail except Luling Bar-B-Q. Well, I am happy to report that that has changed. Luling Bar-B-Q has great food! My wife and I tried the brisket and hot links. We found both to be flavorful and juicy. In fact, we both thought their meat was better than you can get just down the street. Try their sauce, a mild mustard mixture that is quite good, especially on the links. If you visit, save room for the PIE. Goodness, I forgot how good chocolate pie can taste.
The ribs, sausage, and brisket were good. The sides weren't dat good. But the BBQ more than mAde up for it. P
Great sides!. We went on Labor Day! What was I thinking? It was very busy - even @ 2:30pm. The only meat left was brisket & sausage. But it was very good. The pea salad, potato salad & okra were perfect. The white/vanilla cake was very moist & delicious. I usually don't order sausage, but it was very tasty. Can't wait to go back & try the ribs.

A Really Cool Adventure!!!. Went to Luling today for the Watermelon Thump Festival and to eat at City Market. Well seems like everyone on earth knows that City Market is not open on Sunday's - except me. No problem, we decided to eat up the street half a block at Luling Bar-B-Que, and I'm glad we did. The counters all the way at the back and the line went all the way to the front door. All 15 tables were full, and everybody was HUNGRY from cruising the Watermelon Festival, so we decided to stick it out. (The heavenly smell of BBQ contributed as well) Actually, it took all of about 10 minutes to get to the counter, (which gives you plenty of time to meet your neighbor in line and discuss the menu) yell your order at the guys behind the counter, pay and turn to hunt for a table. One of the absolute best things about Texas is that if you see a table that has a couple of empty seats where someone is sitting, it really is okay to introduce yourself and ask if you can join them. If they say no, you can bet they're from somewhere else. As luck would have it, a picnic table came open just as we turned from the counter, so we grabbed it and asked the family of 4 behind us to join us. We all sat down, said grace, and dove in. My sausage was terrific, but my wifes Jalapeño Sausage was unbelievable. Ribs were good, moist and just the right spice. My wifes Smoked chicken was out of this world. Heres the thing, NONE of this meat needed any BBQ Sauce. It was perfect just like it was. There was sauce on the table, and we tried it and liked it, but the meat just didn't need it. Thats Good Que!!! Sides were good and fresh, and weren't cooked into oblivion like most BBQ places. Service was Texas friendly and prices were way better than your standard BBQ prices in San Antonio. Combination plate was $ 7.50. For BBQ this good, thats a value. We said goodbye to our new friends and went to look for some watermelon for dessert. I don't know if City market is better than Luling's, but if it is, its got to be the best on the planet, cause this is some of the best BBQ I've ever had. This trip to Luling was a really cool adventure.
IT'S GOOD TOO. This is the more traditional...it's good...almost all BBQ is...it has some great sides...friendly and a great price

The jalapeno sausage was my favorite sausage of the day. It had the right amount of heat and flavor. It was a good thing there was glass between me and all those sausages in the pic above or my BBQ road trip would have ended here in a massive orgy of sausage gluttony.....
If you are looking for an amazing BBQ restaurant, you have to try Luling BBQ! When you walk into this gem of a place, the strong BBQ aroma overtakes you and you know you are in for real Texas BBQ treat. They really know true BBQ as they have been around for over 40 years and are definitely worth the drive to Luling. They have tender mouthwatering brisket, delicious fall off the bones ribs, sausage, chicken and turkey. In addition they have an impressive array of side dishes to chose from including broccoli slaw, scallop potatoes, potato salad, green beans, cole slaw, beans, etc. My personal favorite was the broccoli slaw. They also had a good selection of pies. Highly recommend!! Definitely worth the drive from San Antonio.
Awesome BBQ and service. From now on this will be our favorite spot point when we drive from Houston to San Antonio. I have never seen my kids eat so much and so fast.
Passing through Luling and decided to stop in for some BBQ. I am glad that we stopped. The menu was straightforward and you have the choice between a sandwich or a plate. I had a brisket sandwich and a 2 meat plate with chicken and sausage link. The plate came with two sides and I went with greenbeans and potato salad. I thought the BBQ was delicious and it paired well with their house made BBQ sauce.
We visited here on a Sunday. My family had hoped to go to Central market but it was closed. So, we settled for this place and we were pleasantly suprised! I tried the ribs, the brisket, and the jalapeno sausage. The brisket I was given was from the flat and very lean. Had great flavor but was a touch dry. The ribs and sausage were outstanding! The star of the show was their mustard based bbq sauce! One of the best sauces I've ever tried. I bought a bottle to take back home to Oklahoma. If you're in Lulling id highly recommend giving this place a try!
P.S. My only major complaint was the disposable silverware they gave us. The sausage had such a good snap on it but the silverware was too flimsy to cut the sausages!
It was quick and easy some bikers were there with some cool bikes I used to sell split hides on the side of the road in the Grand canyon so I spent a little time out front that gentleman had benches and split hides for around $300.
I should have got the combo plate so that I could tell you more about their delicacies and when I saw the brisket I decided that was the way to go so I ordered the sandwich and he asked me if I wanted to sliced or chopped.
Well I'm at bearded weirdo and so I went ahead and asked to have it chopped only to be served to scoop out of the heated trays.
Live and learn it's Texas BBQ I'm going to get it sliced and chop it myself from now on.
Some of the best barbecue I had said you don't need no teeth to eat our beef.
This was our first time to eat here. We sampled all of it and we will definitely make this a stop when passing through. The jalapeño sausage was very good; all of the meat had the smoke flavor you expect. The dry rub ribs were most tender I've ever eaten.
I love their sausage! The meat is tight, the casing has a good bite, and it is always cooked perfectly with a good shrivel.
Their barbecue sauce is a mustard base which goes perfectly with the sausage.
I stop by and get a sausage every time I'm driving through town.
