Review Asian-ya Tokyo Kalbi - Los Angeles

Barry Danial
Went here twice during my time in California from Dec '21 to Jan '22, first with my mom's Russian friend living in LA and my younger brother and then on my own. Tokyo Kalbi is special for Japanese BBQ in LA in the sense that it is one of the few Japanese BBQ joints in LA that uses charcoal instead of gas or electric grills, which really helps to enhance the flavors of the meat. The Premium Kobe beef tongue and short ribs were especially outstanding, though I would recommend ordering them beforehand, including for thickly-cut beef tongue. It's also best to reserve your table beforehand as well. If I were given the choice to come to this joint the next time I'm in California, I would gladly do so! Would highly recommend this joint if you want proper Japanese food in LA!

Been coming for years. The staff are always great. Food and the meat quality is always 5 stars. I would recommend getting the Kobe Beef tongue thin and thick cut. Fried chicken gizzards are delicious. I know not healthy, but once and while.

Best Japanese BBQ I’ve had since coming back from Japan! Amazing service and great quality meat and vegetables. The portions aren’t huge, but the quality made it worth it. If you enjoy your bbq with rice, it helps fill you more anyway. For four people, my friends and I paid about $50/each including tip, and were perfectly full. Cant wait to come back.

Top quality Japanese BBQ. If you’re looking for volume, this isn’t the place but you will find GREAT quality!!!

Meat quality is good but cut too thin. You will end up ordering double the amount to make up for it. Expensive for what it is . Go to Gyu-kaku instead if you're looking for yakiniku.

This place is a hidden GEM. The cuts are great, they have a variety of vegetables to grill, and the best part is that they aren’t absurdly overpriced. This place also has hot coals instead of gas, which is something I’d never done before but I think it might be better than gas. The staff was so friendly and helpful too. We tried the gyoza as well and while they’re good, they aren’t the best gyoza I’ve ever had. A few logistics notes: parking is a little tight, but Tokyo Kalbi in a strip mall so it’s all free parking. And currently (during covid) they are reservation only according to their website so keep that in mind and call ahead!

This is very good Japanese style BBQ. Charcoal grills and simple quality meat selections and veggies you cook yourself. Parking lot. Accessible.
