Review 1739 Public House - Los Angeles

Rebecca Joyce
This has been my local pub for some years now. It's a great spot for major sports events year round. They even adjust opening hours accordingly - I've had a beer here while watching 8am World Cup matches! Food is better than I expect at a bar. They have sidewalk tables that are great for having an afternoon beer with my dog. Good beer selection and full bar. Only gripe is the service can be slow, maybe they don't have enough staff, and sometimes it's confusing whether you should order at a bar or sit and wait for a server. They haven't offered the free pizza during happy hour for years.

Eye opening beer selection and friendly staff. Great sports watching venue. Going to come back and play some tunes on their loud jukebox!

Great pub with huge TV screens for sports watching. Typical pub food but they also have accommodations for gluten-free options. You can also order from the Indian restaurant next door and have it delivered by the same crew. They have happy hour options which are great deals. The staff are friendly and the management is very helpful. Also they have very safe socially distant covet protected outdoor seating. It's a great Los Feliz spot to watch a game or have happy hour.

Great place for sports. Good menu for a sports bar. Service can be slow when important games are on but it is understandable.

One of my favorite spots to watch sports and get a good beer. They have an incredible beer selection with rotating and seasonal options. I would give it a full 5 stars, unfortunately the bartenders can be inattentive at times. The food has always been delicious and quick! Hats off to the kitchen staff! If you’re in the area or going to visit LA it’s worth a look! Even if you’re stopping for a quick drink you should. There’s a very nice rustic atmosphere and aesthetic. Happy hour has some good deals as well!

A very, very nice experience and the best bartender Agatha she is AWESOME and the waiter Pedro assisting are an amazing team I really recommend the place when she's there

It's a good local pub. Lots of ample seating. Service is takes awhile and not the most attentive but this comes in part from being a pretty large venue. For me, it's a little loud to have a conversation without needing to raise your voice even when there's no sporting event. Still, I recommend it for decent food, a good beer selection and a nice assortment of games (pool, arcades and I think there may be darts).

One of the best NFL football experiences in my lifetime. The bartenders we're super cool & attentive, generous pours on their drinks. Everyone there was happy to be there + my Niners winning probably put me in an even BETTER mood. I'll be back again!!!!

Good local sports bar with an amazing selection of beer, lots of booths, and areas for large groups. The food is standard bar food, and tastes great, but it's the selection of beers that really stand's out. I'm not a sports guy, but I do enjoy returning to this place.

Big open space with plenty of TV's to watch the games. Friendly and attentive staff on hand. There is outdoor seating as well. I went on a Saturday, mid-afternoon and it wasn't too bad. The food was traditional bar food. Nothing quite special or interesting about it. I had the nacho burger with french fries. Both tasted like frozen food. This place looks like it could really do well using fresher ingredients in their menu offering.

A pretty solid sports bar with other fun activities, like pool, trivia nights and other games. The food isn't anything spectacular. A pretty broad range in types and styles; pizza, burgers, pastas, chicken dishes, etc. There is a huge beer tap selection, which makes trying new beers fun and usually something for everyone. A lot of TVs so easy to catch any game that is on somewhere in the bar, plus a good layout to see a lot of the TVs at once.

A good place to go for casual drinks and a bite. Their selection is pretty big, so most people can find something to eat and drink. It can get kind of loud and hot when they do trivia and such, and sometimes the service can be a bit slow if you're not at the bar, but if you're not in a hurry, it's a great place to hang out.

I am a black female who use to live next door in the old brick building and I use to eat there a lot. The owner Jesse is very kind and accommodating. This is a nice place to hang out and to go for a drink. Everything is reasonable. The food is good and reasonable. Jesse is very kind and we should support him in Covid times.

Nice quiet upstairs, great atmosphere which changes between an upbeat downstairs, and a chatty intimate upstairs. Great bar for parties of 2-6. Whether you're coming for a sports game or just to have a nice chat with your pals, this bar can accommodate everyone. It's even got some billiard tables and air hockey upstairs for some fun competition!

Trivial Interests. Being one of the Wednesday Trivia Night regulars, I have something of a love/hate relationship with the Public House.

The good:
- Great trivia night with Jay, the trivia master
- Excellent beer selection, probably around 60-70+ beers on tap
- $5 cheese pizzas
- For sports, there are TVs EVERYWHERE you look

The bad:
- Management is prone to making terrible, selfish decisions (see below).
- All the food that I've tried here has been mediocre to bad. The only safe (aka half decent) bets are the cheese pizza, fish & chips and burger.
- A smidge pricey for a sports/trivia spot ($6+/beer).

To expand upon the management issue above, we've twice run into complications with the own of this place. The first time was when we tried to redeem bar dollars won from trivia, only to discover that the expiration dates on each of the certificates had been made void due to a new rule silently enacted by management. This rule stated that bar dollars needed to be spent within one week of receipt. In other words, if we won bar dollars one week, we could not use them next week. We actually had to convince him to even let us use them on the same night that we won them! What a mess.
Debacle number two occurred on April 20th of this year, when trivia collided head-on with a Lakers game on Stoner's New Year. The bar was packed with sports fans by the time trivia began and it was apparent that attempting to hold trivia in the same space was going to be a disastrous conflict between the nerds and the jocks. Rather than postpone trivia or situate us in the adjacent, empty bar (same owner), it was decided that poor Jay should just slug it out with the Lakers fans so that management could have as many people in the bar as possible. Long story short, there were some derogatory team names, some tables angrily relocating, a few patrons who swore never to return, and a 5-minute long happy hour the next week as compensation for our troubles (management fought back on the petty details of this mini-happy hour even up until it began).

Anyways, I'll keep returning, but only for the trivia and the atmosphere, which are great on your normal Wednesday night.

All the beer you could ask for. The happy hour is off the chain. When you buy a beer you get a free pizza. The service is simple, no waitstaff.

Stopped for Dinner. My son and I were looking for a quick bit to eat on Sunday evening before I left his house for the OC. We stopped in to 1739 and were really pleased by the quick service and the food. I ordered the Fish and Chips and my son ordered a Chicken sandwich. The fish was hot, crisp and very tasty. my son's sandwich was also amazing!

A HAPPENING PLACE. I think they got it right for this place. The casual ambiance and good beer as well as some of the great menu items such as the fish and chips and the grilled salmon with cauliflower mash are great ways to unwind. Lots of young crowd makes is a fun place to hang out.

Good, casual, neighborhood bar.... Above average bar food (the burger is a rip off of Father's Office, but hey, it's pretty good). Nice unpretentious setting. The bar gets crowded and there's no wait service so bottlenecks occur at the bar area. It also gets really loud.

This is a good spot for a group, but not for a date.

The "public house" is a great idea for this place. Apparently, the owners were not successful with the swanky idea of tiger lily or the mes amis. Maybe a nice looking bar with tons of beer on tap and cheap pub food is exactly what will work. Personally, I like that there is a cheap alternative in this neighborhood, everything else around here is so expensive it's nice to be able to get a pretty good burger and a decent beer on tap with out needing a bailout.

Three Going On Four. They've tried three different concepts in this space and based upon my experience last night it will soon be four. This is a bad concept, poorly executed. The food is cheap - not good, just cheap. The "service" is poor - although we ordered with one number (yes, think Carl's Jr.) all four orders came at different times (at least Carl's Jr. brings your order together). And the management is non-existent - there was nobody to complain to. It's a shame. This is a prime spot and this neighborhood deserves something better than this crappy place. What's next for this restaurant? Grind your own hamburger and cook it yourself?

Once Tiger Lilly, then Mes Amis, and presto chango, now 1739 Public House. Located on Vermont in the trendy Los Feliz (Fah-leez) area, it's an attempt at a traditional pub, but with the random artwork and cheesy water effects behind the bar it smells of a
