Food was very well done and different. It was way too pricey for the location and style, but the bartender and wait staff were wonderful. I would only go duing Happy Hour.
Mexican with a fine twist. Excellent service, mouth watering food, perfectly made drinks and a cozy elegant atmosphere. Any time I eat here I'm always impressed. Make sure to stop in for $2 tacos on Monday after 4!!!
Malo is an odd place. I come here quite regularly because it's definitely got a few things going for it, BUT there are also definitely some issues!
Pros: great location, reasonable prices for the location, relatively quick, there's always space even for Friday dinner or Sunday brunch without a prior booking (rare on Sunset), drinks are good and strong
Cons: food is average (that's a pretty big 'con' I realise!)
Really, really good, strong margaritas and good service. Happy hour is worth the visit! Everyone was welcoming and accommodating. We ordered the cactus and some chips and they were all amazing. Also, super chill, non-pretentious environment. Love it!
Outdoor porch, full bar. Order "chewy chips" if you want a treat. Habanero salsa is the best.
The menu has changed. The ambiance has not. The first real modern taco bar in Silverlake is still a favorite of mine. As always, these are some of the best margaritas in the city, with the spicy cucumber being a style that has been ripped off everywhere. The salsas are still classic, and the cheaper menu is a welcomed addition. I can't get enough of sitting on this patio as well.
This place used to be spectacular and the food has not gone dramatically down hill but other Mexican restaurants have surpassed it. It is still a solid choice for more than just decent Mexican food and it still has the appeal of having an outdoor dining section but there has definitely been a drop in the fun-energy level here and the dimly lit indoor tables can feel grim when the restaurant is less busy.
Went there on Thursday for its trivia night. This place has a really cool set up downstairs half is a bar and half is a dinning room. Upstairs they have two rooms with a small bar in between. They had trivia upstairs in the backroom so trivia players were in our own little area so we didn't annoy non-trivia customers and they didn't annoy us. They had a really great priced hour menu which items were larger than expected and the food came ratherly quickly. Downstairs had normal waitstaff but upstairs for trivia you ordered at the bar. My only complaint was the small bar upstairs didn't have fountain drinks so I had to go downstairs to get a diet soda.
I have a shirt list of Mexican restaurants I could honestly recommend as being good. Most places fall in the OK category and that's fine, but I was surprised to be more than pleased with my meal at Malo. I have only had the Chile Relleno with carnitas, but that was enough to inspire trust in the quality to expect from this place.
Margaritas are good, not my drink of choice.
The decore itself is fine. The ambient lighting is good for a date, but not so much for reading the menu.
Overall, very content with my experience.
Malo is severely underrated in my book. Their margaritas are delicious and generously poured, and their food never fails to please - I literally have dreams about their creamy habanero salsa. They serve interesting Mexican fare on the breakfast menu at brunch, which is a refreshing departure from the ubiquitous benedicts, pancakes, and omelettes. Great for groups and sufficiently intimate for a date.
