Review The Whale & Ale - Los Angeles

Jess Flower
We came in on first Thursday’s after exploring San Pedro for a bit. Very attentive server, nice ambience with open fireplace and old wood decor. Feels like an old Irish pub. Food is good. Sausage rolls were not what I expected, it’s an actual sausage wrapped in pastry, not ground meat. The Fish and chips were great and the gravy on the sausages and mash was really tasty. Two rounds of beers and ciders for two and it cost us $120 with tax and tip. Also they had karaoke on Thursday night which was a nice surprise. Recommend if you’re looking for warm vibe and comfort food.

The Whale and Ale is on 7th Street in Old Town San Pedro. It is a hidden gem and you must try it when you are in town. They have the best pub food in the City. It is just a perfect place. Parking is on the street or behind the store front. We easily found metered parking right in front. We were there for lunch and it was not too crowded. We decided to eat outside and we loved it. It was a wonderful day and the umbrella kept out any sun in our faces. The entire staff is ever so kind. We were greeted right away and seated. A server was soon with us for a drink order. The menu is great. It goes beyond just pub food, it is fine dinning food in a pub. It is that great. We ordered calamari, mac and cheese and fish and chips. My grandson ordered and the server was so sweet to him. We decided to share it all. And there was so much fish and chips we had some to take home. The calamari was lightly breaded and just wonderful. I was able to get one before my "sharing" grandson ate the rest. The mac and cheese was out of this world. It was so full of cheese and had a great cheese grated top. We have ordered mac and cheese at some very expensive places and this one tops them all. Just amazing. The fish and chips were battered perfectly and so good and we got 2 huge pieces and could not finish it. Not one item was any less than what you might find at a 5 star fine dinning place. The prices are reasonable. We went inside and found spotless bathrooms and the cutest bar and sitting area. They even have a fire place. All the staff said hello as we walked by. We felt so welcome and we don't drink. Oh, and they have live music at night. Go there. You will just love this place. It is amazing.

Some of the best food I've ever enjoyed at a Pub. Brittney was our bartender and made me a fantastic Coconut Margarita (it wasn't on the menu yet) Whoa!!! Was it DELICIOUS! I highly recommend you order one from her on your next visit 😁 The rest of the cocktails are delicious too! The rest of the staff Ty, Kim, Genesis, Evelyn, and the owners Martin and Susan are all AWESOME! I'm so glad my fiance Michael happened to find this local spot. I loved it!

Food was good. Atmosphere had the feel of a 200-year-old Dublin pub. Fish and burgers slightly undercooked. May have to send back for more cooking. Staff were very accommodating. Arriana (server) was super nice, knowledgeable, and unbelievably sweet. I'll be back!

Oh, do not pass this Pub by at all!! This is the real deal and the finest fish n' chips this man has had in a long, long time!! You know you're gunna to have the Guiness, but don't overlook the other assortment of fine beverages to be had ...recommendation, Starr with a flight... Service 5 star....

Visited on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and chose to eat outside on the patio. First the service was great! Greeted warmly and promptly when entered by what seemed all the staff. Ha, it was “hello & welcome” in stereo. My girlfriend had the Steak & Mushroom Pie and loved it! Great recommendation from our waitress. I went for my favorite, good old Fish & Chips. And they didn’t disappoint! Perfectly crisp fresh cod, and the chips were made to perfection. Next time we’ll eat inside and take in the ambience that is Whale & Ale. But on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, it was tough to pass up the sunshine.

A truly authentic piece of Britain that has absolutely fantastic authentic food. The owner Andrew made a point of asking me how our meal was and Wyeth was an excellent server. As a brick myself I will totally recommend if you're even remotely hungry and somewhere near here you have to give this restaurant a try.

I was impressed by this place. We were just walking by and decided to stay for a drink. We ended up ordering dinner. The food was incredible. I've been told that British food isn't the best, but this was sooooo good. We ordered fish and chips, shepherd's pie, claw chowder and a brisket sandwich. It was delicious.

If I had money I would eat here everyday. I've never had sheperd's pie that tasted so delicious. I would say they have some of the best food in San Pedro.

Specifically went down to this place for the Kilkenny Irish cream Ale. The au jus was nothing special, but a good sandwich and chips for the price. Will definitely go back.

Just spent a great Friday night here. The fish and chips was perfect and reminded me of the classic Wisconsin fish fry we always had every Friday before moving to San Pedro. They are a little short staffed, so be patient during busy times. Make sure to end the dinner with their amazing sticky pudding.

The food was delicious. The atmosphere made me feel like I was in the UK. The staff were friendly, quick, and efficient. The live music was phenomenal. All in all, a great dining experience. I will definitely be returning in the future.

Nice...family environment. Quiet and relaxing on a Saturday day of April. Good service. Reasonable prices.

Talk about accommodating! I asked the owner, Andrew, if I could bring a large party to the restaurant near closing time, and he was more than happy to do it. Because of the number of people that came, he kept the kitchen open past normal hours, kept the bar open past normal hours, and even printed up special menus just for the occasion! I won't lie; Andrew and I aren't strangers. He and the Whale & Ale have long been partners with Little Fish Theatre, of which I'm a company member. Our outfits have worked together multiple times, and we're on a first name basis. However, what he did for me on my birthday is simply a macroscopic version of the attention he gives to each client during the brief time he shares with them in his restaurant. He frequently walks the floor, greeting guests, checking in on his staff, pouring drinks, and staying intimately involved with every detail of his operation. I'm not going to go into the quality of the cuisine; I've eaten there before, and I will eat there again, enough said. I won't bore you with details on the extent and variety of English and English-style beers you'll find there, either. If you want to know these things for yourself, you'll go there. What continues to impress me is his devotion and hands on approach to business, the passion and inventiveness he brings to his craft, and his deep interest and embedment in the community he serves. Stop by the Whale & Ale and say hi to Andrew and the rest of his sociable, friendly staff. Grab a bite before a Little Fish show, or a cocktail afterward. Trust me, these are people you'll enjoy getting to know.

Enjoyed our Sunday dinner of beef barley soup and fish and chips (both excellent) while listening to a great jazz band led by Justin. A thoroughly enjoyable experience! Finished off by having delicious sticky toffee pudding and trifle - yum!

Whale & Ale is the BEST eats in San Pedro! And they carry top shelf liqueur as well, like Lagavulin! The Captain's Combo is done in fine English style, and the RibEye Steak is to die for! While they no longer serve my favorite, Steak & Oyster Pie, their Beef Wellington is killer!!!

Hands down the best beef and mushroom pie EVER. The gravy was tasty, the meat was tender and the crust was flaky. I have found my new favorite place in California. Plus, watching the Dodgers play (and win!) against the Astros with local fans was fun!

My husband asked me where I wanted to celebrate my birthday...Whale and Ale was my hands-down choice!!! I love this warm and friendly restaurant. Delicious food, Fish and Chips and Beef Wellington are my favorite. For dessert, the warm Cumberland Sticky Toffee Pudding with a creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream is scrumptious. Roddy our waiter always remembers us and all our family stories. What a gem he is, a pro's pro of a server. Whale and Ale and Roddy thanks for a special evening.

Drove for the closest Beef Wellington to us, not many serve it in So Cal. The chef did not disappoint, bravo! We will be back again! Worth the drive indeed!

2 stars for the super cute place... Food was very disappointing and the service needs improvement. Fish and chips were underwhelming and small in portion for the price. The sausage rolls were soggy and seemed microwaved. 😖

Best fried shrimp, fish and calamari! The service is excellent. The Sundsy music was a treat.

The best food I've had in a long time. The staff was super welcoming and overall just amazing. My first visit and I can't wait to come back down again for some more amazing food and people

Love Whale & Ale, a place ~ "Where everybody knows your name." One of the best treasures of San Pedro, CA!

The food was amazing, a very unassuming place when you first walk in. But soon it was bustling and the vibe was great. Can't wait to go back when they have music.

I dropped by for a late lunch just before Xmas. Had a ribeye sandwich - rare, of course - and since it was 5 o'clock somewhere, a glass of red zin. Mmmm, good! The best!!

What's not to love about the Whale & Ale!? The staff are all so friendly and attentive. The food is delicious! A true community gem in San Pedro.
