Review Mao's Kitchen - Los Angeles

Whitney Lauritsen
I'm so glad this place is still here, as it brings me a lot of nostalgia from my old days living in Venice. It hasn't changed a bit since 2010, which is great. The restaurant is super accommodating to different dietary choices, like vegan and gluten-free, because they make everything from scratch. Loved the hot and sour soup and mapo tofu. Plus even the rice puffs they put on the table are gluten-free! AND, the food was super affordable for the quality and portion size. The female employee who took served on Saturday night was so kind and helpful, and I was thrilled that the vibe was so chill at 5pm (only a few people sitting inside, but many take out orders).

We had the kung pao beef and sesame yam. The kung pao beef was ok, nothing exceptional. The sesame and yam was really delicious, the fried tofu complemented the thin slices of yam really well. The staff was very nice

Great little vibe! 10/10 will be recommending at my shop. One dollar salad is definitely worth it. Only wish the dressing was a little closer to a vinaigrette. We ordered the kungpao chicken and WOW -DELICIOUS. Will be coming back to review more dishes. They give wontons for the table with a DELICIOUSSS sauce. Spring rolls are a must try ! The onion pancake was nothing like I’ve had before and it was a surprisingly tasty bite especially with the sauce it came from. Worth it for the quick stop after a long day of working. The ambiance was just my kind of vibe/lowkey place to eat with friends with good prices and a great portion of food. Thank you :) will come again

The good: orange chicken is legendary, sauce is proper and the curry which is not watery just beautifully creamy and so the wontons, amazing. The Bad: sometimes really odd folks, you know, Venice.....Put your earbuds and just chomp your food you will love it trust me. Will I come back: Absolutement! I like the fact that in every LA restaurant there are two music zones. The kitchen blasting Mexican music and the front of the house (at maos) playing Chinese meditation music. I am Mexican by the way.

Delicious Cantonese Cuisine in Venice!" Review: Mao's is truly a gem in Venice! As a fan of Cantonese cuisine, it's such a delight to find a restaurant that serves it so well. My family and I have been regular patrons of Mao's, and we are never disappointed. The food is consistently delicious, and the flavors are authentic. The service is excellent, and the staff always makes us feel welcome. We can't get enough of their dishes, and it has become one of our favorite places to dine in Venice. Thank you, Mao's, for consistently serving amazing food and providing us with great memories. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience authentic Cantonese flavors! One of my favorite places to come to in Venice rarely see Cantonese restaurants and they do not disappoint thank you Mao’s for always serving my family and I, we love it.

Good food, huge portions. Only one waitress for the whole place (she even bussed the tables) but she was great! Bare bones, nothing fancy, just plain good and reasonably priced.

Nice and affordable place with giant portions, legendary $1 salad, careful waiter. Highly recommend if you want local Venice food on the tight budget.

If you’re visiting LA, Venice and you’re after a bite to eat check out Mao’s kitchen. They provide both vegetarian and Meat options and the prices are very reasonable, the best you will find in Los Angeles. The service is great too and they are very friendly. I eat here every time I’m in LA! Highly recommended 💫

Absolutely, love this place, the egg flower soup ( like eggdrop soup) with cornucopia of vegetables, is soup for the Gods.😋😋💜 The portions are huge and extremely delicious. Although, the wait time, is a bit long . The, relatively, current rage, in the States, although pretty common in Europe, is "Italian Rustic". Therefore, this place's atmosphere should be considered Chinese Rustic with a Cali-beach twist. 🤙🤙🤙😎💜💙💜

Very busy in the evening. Idk if someone called in or if this was a regular day. Orders were backed up, people were complaining they haven't been served for over an hr. They even served a table while I was waiting, only one person got their food. This guy was upset. The food is great, just have patience, even if it's to go.

Dined in for dinner, take out for brunch the next day. Loved the "pamphlets" I'm vegan/vegetarian. The two people I was with were not. They loved what they ordered too!

The service was very friendly, we loved the vibe of the place. Maybe the food wasn't that special but the portions were huge! I recommend it.

Really delicious food, super generous portion, the waitress was very skilled, unfortunely alone for the entire restaurant and thus wauting time was longer. Yet worth it.

This place is always busy, and every time I go I am reminded why I keep coming back. The food is delicious, very tasty and good size portions, and a really good value in Venice, where it can be difficult to find good food that isn't overly priced. Don't expect much in the way of aesthetics or nice utensils, it's all the about the food, as it should be.

Great spicy Chinese food!! Went here for a quick lunch with my family after visiting Venice Beach/ Sta. Monica. Good service and good food. The restroom could use more cleaning.

This place has great lunch specials. The serves are probably on the larger side, so don't order too much unless you're ready for it! I had the szechuan eggplant, which was fresh and moreish.

Way too loud and crowded for my taste. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. Service was good.
