Review Nick's Cafe - Los Angeles

Ashley Dean
Nick’s Cafe near Chinatown and Union Station left an indelible impression, especially with their French toast. From the moment the plate arrived, the aroma of warm, cinnamon-infused goodness enveloped the table. The French toast itself was a culinary masterpiece — golden-brown perfection on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside. The attention to detail was evident; each slice had just the right balance of sweetness, and the hint of vanilla elevated the overall flavor profile. Topped with a dusting of powdered sugar and a generous dollop of whipped butter, it was a visual and gastronomic delight. What stood out beyond the delectable French toast was the warm and attentive service. The staff went above and beyond to ensure a pleasant dining experience, making the atmosphere even more enjoyable. While I indulged in the French toast, glancing around, it was evident that Nick’s Cafe takes pride in their diverse menu. The prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food, making it a great value for a satisfying breakfast. In the heart of Los Angeles, Nick’s Cafe is not just a diner; it’s a culinary haven for breakfast enthusiasts. If you find yourself craving an exceptional French toast experience, this spot near Chinatown and Union Station is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

Nick's Cafe in LA was highly recommended and didn't disappoint. They seem to know what they're doing for 75 years! Their "signature" Ham & Eggs is a standout with fresh homemade hash browns. I try to never order greasy, frozen tasteless hash browns but these were neither.

Fantastic place! Proper local diner. Good food, efficient and professional service. I get what some say about the coffee but it wasn't too terrible. Excellent value for money. Properly set me up for the day.

Came here for breakfast around 9AM , we had a little wait , but def worth it because the food was really good. I ordered Nicks Sandwich and corn beef hash and eggs - everything was 10/10 If you’re ok with the wait ; this place is worth it.

The service was amazing, the waiter (didn’t get her name) had great energy and was extremely helpful. I ordered the French Toast with scrambled eggs and ham (it was delicious) My mother ordered the chilaquiles and nope to be honest they were flavorless! The coffee would have been perfect is paired with coffee creamer not (cow milk) Overall the best part was the service and the French Toast lol

Drove all the way from Albuquerque, NM. Local is the only way to eat when you travel. This diner was amazing. The food is great, and the service is even better! I'm glad we came here.

Nicks was a great breakfast choice! We got the Cali scramble with chorizo and the meat lover skillet. Fresh coffee, fresh ingredients, and great service. Small local spot, here since 1948 and I see why they’ve been around for so long. 10/10 would come back to try the lunch menu

4.7 The French toast was fantastic, filling, and is going on our list as a family fave. We questioned it at first because it looked like slices of French bread, which we weren’t used to, but it was absolutely delicious. The strips of bacon on the side were so huge and perfectly crisply that they’ve raised our bar for bacon too. While we didn’t dine-in, it had an old school, no frills diner vibe, was packed, and the food on the tables looked delicious. Line outside was very long on a Sunday morning so we opted for take out. Ordering through their website was easy to find and had no extra charges. Our only hesitation was the $2 fee for butter and syrup. We didn’t pay it but it still came with it. Where to pick up the food and where to stand without blocking the entrance was confusing. I waited 5 minutes while the person in front of me ordered before I was helped but they gave me a coffee for the wait so I didn’t mind. The reason I can’t give 5 stars is because of the styrofoam used for my takeout boxes and cup. I’ll have to dine in or bring my own container next time.

I stumbled by this place while driving through DTLA. Small place that packs a punch in high quality and taste in good quality prepared food. I had what could be described BEST HOME MADE CORNED BEEF HASH AND EGGS in Los Angeles County. The only inside dining in this tiny place is a U counter wrapped around their work area cooking is toward md the back in audition they have canopy dining outside. They have good pork products CHORIZO, HAM, CHILAQUILES etc good selection of breakfast and lunch plates. Bottled Mexican coke & orange Fanta. ADELANTE NICKS CAFE! They’ve been around since 1948 please don’t change a good thing going!!

Incredible diner; this spot is a must. Randomly walked in, was greeted by staff that felt sincere and genuine. Sat at the counter and has everything you wish a diner would. Had the California Scramble you get to choose a meat with the scramble; and I picked chorizo because based off all the pig decorations I'm assuming they carry good pork products. I wasn't wrong.. honestly some of the best chorizo I think I've ever had. Not fatty, chewy or lumpy at all. Nice meaty buttery texture.. honestly top tier would highly highly recommend. Anyone that orders chorizo regularly knows, y'all know it's hard to find a spot with good chorizo in LA. Will definitely be paying them a visit again. Also!! They have some salsa that I think they might be making in house they put it in squeeze bottles just thought it was interesting that they offered it, but also pretty damn good lacked a little flavor but added this freshness to the meal that was incredible. When I say the salsa lacked a little bit of flavor there is no negative connotation there. Really enjoyed this place.

First time here for my wife and I. We shared the Big Country Plate & Cinnamon French Toast. The food is on point, and the portions are big. The service is welcoming and attentive. Nice, nostalgic atmosphere, too. We will definitely be coming back. What a gem!

If you are looking for an old fashion dinner that serves breakfast and lunch, look no further. Nick's Cafe got the giant menu, c-shaped counter seating inside, and lots of breakfast favorites. I went there w my friend after spending a couple hours at a craft fair at the historic park across the street. It's a great place for family too. Highly recommend!

This diner has its own charm about it, definitely transporting you back in time. They have fun decorations including lots of pigs and photos of before and after of Los Angeles. Service was friendly and food didn't take too long to come out. We got the Huoves Rancheros and it did not disappoint. It also ended up being way too much food and I saved the leftovers to stuff into a burrito later. We waited about 20 min so we could sit inside, but there is also a set up outdoor area as well. Overall a fun, little dinner with neat decor and yummy food!

Nick's Cafe is a great place for breakfast, that's what I know it for. It's another historical restaurant in L.A. that has been there since the 40's. It's still set up the way it was back then, a U shaped counter which I believe only seats approximately twenty people. The good thing is that they have set up tables outside, AL FRESCO, style. The breakfast is good, old fashioned style, you can't go wrong with whatever you order. The one thing people kept asking for while I was there was their Meatloaf and they were out. I might have to go back and try the meatloaf! If you like good old fashioned breakfast in an iconic restaurant go to Nick's. Use your phone for directions cause it's not easy to get to unless you know L.A. well.

Best breakfast so far while visiting LA from South Florida! Old school and delicious! Staff is incredibly friendly, and our waitress Kim is one cool chic. Highly recommend!!

It was very good, delicious in fact. I believe they used very fresh ingredients and not really processed food. The reason I say this is because the portion size was pretty large yet we were still able to finish everything. Other places we'll only be able to eat about half and pack the rest to go. We got huevos rancheros and corned beef hash. We also sat outside in very pleasant weather and it was also sheltered.
