Pretty solid and high quality sushi place. If you’re looking for bang for your buck, the sashimi dinner gives you quite a lot for its price. The yellowtail collar was pretty nice, very tender even upon reheating. Chirashi was a nice mix of a lot of different foods with nice sushi rice underneath. Overall very solid high quality place, and would come back, but didn’t blow my mind. There is quite a long wait sometimes. We waited an hour and explored little Tokyo nearby while waiting which was really fun.
Recommended by a Japanese friend, Sushi Gen was the best sushi we had in LA so far. Doesn’t have the strong flavor of all sorts of sauces, they let the quality and freshness of the pieces speak. We got there 10 minutes before the restaurant opened and there was a long line of roughly 50 parties already! Luckily the restaurant was large enough to accommodate us all. Convenient paid parking right in front of the restaurant.
Omakase style sushi is something that I am very picky with. Thank God Sushi Gen delivered!!! This Little Tokyo restaurant highly favored by many is considered as an LA special and I'm so glad that I gave it a try since I'm so loyal to their neighbor, Hama Sushi. Though it is on the more pricey side, I can guarantee that you will definitely get your money's worth with the amazing quality and taste of the sushi.
The sushi was some of the freshest in DTLA. The presentation isn’t flashy like many upscale sushi places but thats because they put emphasis on authenticity and quality. A little expensive but not many restaurants can match this level. Friendly chef. Some reviews do say staff are not the nicest but understandable given the queue grows very rapidly and there are many people to attend to. If you are looking for nice date night spot over good sushi you should look elsewhere. Great atmosphere, really what a sushiya should be. Lines are very long so come very early to sign your name. If you really want to try this place, ask for the bar and don’t come with too many people. Only fish critique is that they use the more generic type of unagi instead of the good one. Regardless good wide variety of fish.
After hearing that Sushi Gen was one of the best sushi spots in Lil Tokyo, we had to come check it out. We arrived early and got in very smoothly once the restaurant opened. The waiting staff were nice and welcoming.
The atmosphere is small but very cosy. Our dishes came out quick!
The sashimi dinner was amazing. Everything was so fresh and high quality, and the variety offered was much more than your standard sushi spot. The meal comes with a huge side portion of hot tempura and miso. They make sure you leave full! I can't wait to return to this place and try the Sushi Deluxe. 😋
Best sashimi in town. We have been coming to this restaurant for decades now. Our families and extended family all come here periodically. Relatives coming from out of town, it’s a must stop whenever they are back to Los Angeles.
I was glad to visit this legendary place. I miss this old school style sushi restaurant. They charged a la carte reasonable and honest. Strong recommended.
One of my go-to spots for sushi in DTLA near little Tokyo. Fish and seafood are generally fresh with high quality. Sushi deluxe and sashimi deluxe are good options for sharing among large parties. Like the uni (urchin) and scallob sushi for sure. Oysters are fresh but small, eel over rich is in huge portion and might be a bit too sweet if you're not a huge fan of eel.
The wait is always long but i will go the matcha ice cream place across the plaza to kill the time. No reservation accepted and never parked inside the plaza since there are quite lot of meters in little tokyo. Heard that the lunch sets are good deal and will definitely try next time.Price tier is medium / high- more affordable than fancy sushi place but more expensive than any neiborhood sushi in la.
Best sushi restaurant in Little Tokyo and my favorite sushi restaurant in LA. This place is super popular so be prepared to wait. They do not take reservations. Show up early for first seating or else you will be waiting for at least a hour. They have a huge sushi bar and also some table seating. Service is very good and efficient. The fish is super fresh and high quality. Would recommend the premium Sushi and the sashimi Deluxe. For lunch, cannot beat the sashimi lunch special for excellent value. Love this restaurant but it's difficult to come all the time due to no reservations. They have a small paid parking lot for the shopping center that fills up during peak lunch and dinner times. The restaurant is very similar to what you can get in Japan.
Authentic sushi and sashimi place with good pricing. Bigger portion and better quality with lower price than most other sushi places. Great vibe, too. By the way, "Gen" in Sushi Gen is read like "ghen," not "jen." I like this place a lot, but if I were to nit-pick, the 6 dollar parking and the 1 main dish per 1 guest requirement would be the con.
