Mix Pacific Rim

I usually have lunch as a group take out. The quality of the lunch for me usually vegetables and fried rice convinced​ me to take my wife for dinner for our anniversary. My wife said that it was ashamed we found the restaurant because we must go back. In other words the atmosphere and food we're great and we plan to return

*****BIG CHANGES AT THE MIX PACIFIC RIM IN 2016********

In 2016 Mix moved into the spot where the Mix Express, aka Bowl to Go, used to be. BOTH RESTAURANTS HAVE BEEN COMBINED INTO ONE.  In the front of the "new" Mix restaurant is a small area for ordering takeout. That's about all that remains of the Bowl to Go. The restaurant itself is kind of small....it looks smaller than the original place. There are only about twelve tables and a smallish sushi bar. The place has been remodeled and appears a little fresher than the old restaurant which needed some updates. Black chairs with red seats, black tables with black plastic table cloths, and red paper napkins were on the tables....at least during lunch. Nothing fancy but a nice enough spot for a casual meal. Rate the ambiance about a "B."  

When I visited in January 2016 I found the service pleasant and helpful. The order was taken timely and the food (main dish) got out of the kitchen in about twelve minutes. Had a nice conversation with the owner who is a very pleasant and personable young woman. Customers were all made to feel welcome and their presence appreciated. Rate the service overall about a "B."  

Today I ordered a bento box. It came with a choice of salad or miso soup. I chose the soup. Broth, a little seaweed, and some tofu....you know the drill. The soup was barely tepid. It really needed to be warmed up more. The flavor was just sort of there. Rate the miso soup a C+. Not the stuff of legend. The fried rice was done perfectly. The pot stickers were good, but with a subtle flavor. They were not great. Give them a "B" rating. The onion rings had a light tempura batter on them. Again, flavors were subtle. The shaved and seasoned beef was quite tasty. Rate this entree a "B" to "B+."  I was not crazy about the flavor of the two dipping sauces that came with the meal. They were just ok....nothing to write home about. Overall, rate the meal a "B." I think I will stick with the Green Curry Chicken. In 2016 THE FOOD QUALITY AT THE MIX MAY HAVE SLIPPED A LITTLE. 

As of 2016 I am rating this restaurant THREE-AND-THREE-QUARTER STARS.......meaing above average but not reaching the level of really good.  The menu could be improved and the food, while good, could stand an upgrade. THIS IS NOT ONE OF MY "GO TO" PLACES.    

2016-2017: BOTTOM LINE: WILL I RETURN TO DINE? I DON'T KNOW. NOT A WHOLE LOT HERE TO DRAW ME BACK.

UPDATED MAY 2015.........Stopped in at Mix for lunch. Again had the Thai Green Curry Chicken. It was very good. The service was fairly good but could have been a little more attentive at the front door with people walking in. The place seems like it needs a little freshening up: they need to spend a little money inside to make it more attractive. In this I would agree with a recent reviewer. I would also agree with that reviewer as to the need of an update to the menu. Still, a nice place and a nice lunch.

Yeah, right! The reviewer of March 23, 2013 was so intent on slamming the service at Mix that she really had to make it sound so unbelievably bad that we are to believe that it took an hour- and-a-half to get her meal to the table. Yeah, I'll believe that! Not. Only in internet reviews can you find such nonsense. 

Now, for some sanity:

First off....I must confess that my review will be of limited value for some people because I do not eat sushi and I cannot, therefore, comment on the merits of that style of food at Mix.

I have eaten there a couple of times and found the ambiance, while not the most comfortable, to be clean and attractive. Rate the ambiance a B. It is fairly nice despite the narrowness of the restaurant and the cement floor.The service is generally good and tends toward the professional level. Rate it a B to B+......meaning they do try to keep it a cut above average. THE MENU IS SOMEWHAT NARROW; NOT ENOUGH CHOICES FOR SOME DINERS. (Since this restaurant has been closed for refurbishing in November 2015.....perhaps they will also refurbish the menu???)   

The food, overall, I have also found to be a cut above average, perhaps in the B to B+ range generally. Despite what some fans of Mix will argue...THIS RESTAURANT IS NOT A TOP TIER ASIAN RESTAURANT. THE FOOD IS GOOD BUT NOT OUTSTANDING.
Not having been to the Mix Pacific Rim in some time I decided to drop in for lunch in September 2012. School was in at the "U" and the restaurant was fairly busy. Yet, the service was quite good and the food prepared and on my table in a timely manner. I ordered the THAI GREEN CURRY CHICKEN. It arrived in a pretty white dish and was a nice presentation. A large amount of chunk chicken was combined with an assortment of vegetables....slices of zucchini, onions, peppers, and julienned carrots. This was served in a spicy and flavorful green curry sauce with white rice on the side of the plate. The heat level was about right and there was just a hint of sweetness. This was one of those meals that tastes better and better the more of it you eat. It was very good. I really enjoyed this rather unique dish. I would judge this meal to be in the B+ to A- range. The meal also came with a cup of miso soup. The soup was better than most miso soup served around town. A little seaweed and just a hint of scallion but no tofu. The serving was also larger than that found in most restaurants around these parts. It was fairly good as far as miso soups go. All-in-all, this was a surprisingly good meal for about $7.50. I went away quite pleased. (And......despite what one so-called reviewer has written.....the prices at Mix are very reasonable.)

So, if you go to Mix don't necessarily expect the world's greatest Asian food.....but most of it is quite good nonetheless. And, they do offer some dishes unique to these parts.

FOR THE COMPLETE DINING EXPERIENCE I WOULD RATE MIX PACIFIC RIM 3 3/4 STARS.....or, above average.
