Whether you lunch, dinner, or breakfast food during Sunday brunch, "The Saltbox Café" will not disappoint. Though you would not expect it from the exterior, you will enjoy a true culinary experience here. Chef Randolph has a true knack for preparing complementary sauces to go with the food. From crab cake to eggplant to peppers, every sauce was perfectly paired. As for the crab cake itself, I may never eat another anywhere else, as I don't think I could ever do as well. Quality crab and lots of it made for a delightful dinner one evening. It would take too much space to detail every meal I enjoyed here, but suffice it to say that I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone for any meal.
My husband and I went to lunch at the Saltbox Cafe. This was our first visit. The menu had a great selection. The food was great. Besides great food, they have a bar and a selection of good wine, beer, and other spirits! The waiter was friendly and helpful. I was impressed when the chef came to our table and talked to us. This is a hidden gem! We will be going back for dinner, and will try their brunch! We will be a regular at The Saltbox Cafe.
Adorable little restaurant! I got the fried fish sandwich and the tomato soup, it was delicious!
Keri was very friendly and helpful, she explained the gluten free options very well. Highly recommend!
The chocolate avocado torte was amazing!
Also the prices were really reasonable!
This awesome restaurant is a little detour from 12, close to the Wrights Brother First Flight site. We were recommended to try this by a family friend who dined here a few years ago and bragged about how good their food was (they ended up eating two meals here during their Outer Banks trip).
We were seated promptly when we arrived on Saturday. The servers were super friendly, especially with recs. The most popular dishes they recommended were the Crab Cake Sandwich and the Reuben. I tried the Crab Cake Sandwich and I thought it was pretty good and flavorful (it also came with well seasoned potato wedges). I think I would have tried the Reuben as that looked a lot better at another table but I still did not regret my decision with trying the crab cake.
We also tried the Sriracha tots and I thought those were a great starter to share with the table.
Overall this is definitely worth trying while you’re out in Outer Banks for a meal! They also have a Sunday brunch menu which also looked pretty good to try if you’ll be passing through this area!
Hands down one of my favorite restaurants near the OBX! Appetizers are unique and to die for, preparing you for your also incredible main course to come! We were so full that we didn't get to try any of the desserts, but we will leave room for them next time!
We also enjoyed the smiling, easy-going staff that worked hard to give us a great experience. We loved the local artwork for sale on the walls.
Top notch everything. We've come to The Saltbox Cafe every year since we discovered it over 5 years ago and every time, It Is Delicious. This time was no exception and might've been the best meal I've ever had there. We always get the bbq shrimp appetizer. And I had the crab cake with crispy brussel sprouts and baby potatoes over a candied bacon cream. PHENOMENAL. My husband had the pork loin with green beans and mashed potatoes. Also delicious! Service is always great. You'll want a reservation for groups more than 2 (if you can get one in the summer) but if you're just a party of two, chances are you'll be able to walk in for bar seating. Parking gets crowded and is fairly limited so be ready for that.
Nice little place for finer dining + a bar and patio seating available on first come, first serve basis.
I recommend making a reservation. There was a line to wait otherwise before it opened.
The food was flavorful and rich (and pricy). Some of the best corn (elote style) and gnocchi we've ever had!
Our 1st visit and we were impressed. Friendly greeting, prompt service and delicious New York Stirip and Cajun Shrimp & Grits. We certainly will return. Also, easy pay via my smartphone.
The covered patio is the best thing since sliced bread. The backdrop is the marsh, there’s wonderful, sturdy seating, music playing through the speakers, screens to keep the bugs out. I felt like I was among nature while fine dining. It was truly amazing.
As for the food, I won’t add anything other reviewers haven’t said. It’s top-notch and quality. I liked the Gruyère dip and kettle chips.
I loved the attention to detail at The SaltBox Cafe while having a casual nature. This dinner made our vacation.
Came in to Salt Box with a group of ladies on a girls’ beach trip. The food was amazing and cooked to order! We had the flatbread, caramelized onion dip, and Brussels for the appetizer. Four of us ordered the crab cake dinner for our entree. Absolutely delicious.
Make reservations and check them out.
This place is a little off the beaten path but totally worth it. It is the best meal we have had in OBX. The fried fish of the day was a tilefish with a remoulade that was excellent. The BLT was fantastic on thick French bread, as was the gyro and the tomato soup and grilled cheese on thick French bread. Staff was so accommodating and friendly as we got there a bit late for lunch. I really cannot recommend this place more highly. So glad we came upon it.
The food and service are exceptional! Our waitress Tiffany was so incredibly friendly! We can't wait to return next year
