Review Stix - Kansas City

Food tasted better than ok. Sitting in front of the chef and going through that experience with family is nice and fun. Hygiene not so good. You can see the black grease on the edge of cooking plate. That doesn’t touch the food but something that I don’t want to see eating. Overall place is nice but can improve a little more with deep cleaning.

First time in this establishment and this chain/brand. We were told there would be a 45 minute wait and were seated in less than 20 minutes. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food came as ordered and everything was fresh and at a good temperature. We will definitely eat here again when in the area

This place looks nice but for $10 a roll this is what I got. There is barely any salmon even in it. The salmon is microscopic in a salmon roll, but 3 pieces of cucumber? The tuna rolls were same. For $30, I basically got 3 cucumber rolls. Go somewhere else.

Great lunch! Fresh sushi and a great size for one This was called the BMW roll! First time trying! Delicious

The best part of the experience was our server. She was not overly friendly or bubbly, but a good combination of courteous and efficient. Our orders were correct, drinks and soup and salad were brought out quick. The ticket was correct. She was training a guy for a bit that night. He was personable. The food was mostly very good and cooked to the right temps. All diners around the Hibachi grill asked for no mushrooms, but the chef cooked them anyway and then struggled to separate them from the rest of the veggies. It seems like they did not use the usual rice and added too much soy sauce, so the fried rice was not as good as usual. They don't answer their phones. Tried calling 4 times. They said they were having problems with them.

Very good food. Staff was friendly. It was also very kid friendly. The kids liked watching the food being prepared. They loved it.

Our food was amazing, but May, our server was even more amazing. She was able to help answer any and all questions we had, gave us really amazing suggestions and was on top of everything. Her service went above and beyond. I really look forward to going back for the amazing food and hopefully get her again. Thank you, May for all your help and all you did. For being so informative and awesome!

Had a 6pm reservation, seated our party at 6:20 We chose the Hibachi grill, the food was good, the seating on the other hand was terrible, so tight I could not eat without bumping into the person next to me. The server was never around when you needed them, the chef had to holler for them numerous times. Then I look down to find this big beetle looking bug crawling on my plate. I summon an employee over and hand him the plate showing him the bug, he takes the plate and just says "okay, thank you".......Really.....must be a regular thing. My overall opinion was that they couldn't care less about me the customer. Good thing for the server that the tip $30.00 was forced on the bill, and not voluntary. They definitely did not earn it. The only thing keeping me from giving them the lowest score is that the chef did a great job.

Wife & I stopped in for a quick bite for lunch. I was less than impress with the environment, dark, dreary & generally unpleasant. It was about 1:00 on a Sunday & there was actually a wait to be seated, I found that surprising for such a large dinning room & no one sitting at the sushi bar. That is where we decided to sit. The sushi chef was very pleasant & engaging. My wife & I both agreed that the sushi menu seemed a bit lacking in some of the more interesting things other restaurants offer. We both ordered 2 rolls each, I was very discouraged at the price of the sashimi which normally I order 15 to 18 pieces to share with my wife, on a platter offering. Nothing like that here, and at $9 for 3 pieces NO way I'm paying upwards of $45 to get what normally sets me back only about $28 bucks! So needless to say the sashimi is extremely overpriced & ordinary. Our rolls were served fairly fast. They just seemd to lack something special. Ordinarily Sushi leaves me feeling almost exhilarated & wonderful, it seems so fresh & light. Not this stuff, I don't know if it was the rice or the quality of the fish or just the preparation or a combination of all three things, but it just seemed lifeless Bland and uninteresting. I would compare this sushi to the same stuff you can purchase at Costco. Sure it filled my stomach but it just didn't bring me that wonderful Pleasant feeling Sushi normally does. I don't think I would probably go back, and if I did I'm more than likely would never order the sushi again. Perhaps I'm spoiled with what I have had in the past but I think they can do much better than this!

The staff is extremely rude and didn’t seem to care about customers at all. I found a HAIR in my pad Thai and the waiter just said “oh” when I handed it to him and then he casually walked over to the manager handed it to him and then manager walked to the kitchen! Didn’t apologize didn’t come by the table just walked away! If you’re a manager you always come talk to the guest and try to make things right! Then the waiter just plopped another plate on my table and walked away. We won’t be back after that. I work in the food industry this is not how you run a restaurant!!! No wonder the place was empty on a Friday night.

Never will I go to Stix at the Legends. Waited half an hour after our reservation before we were seated. We were the first table seated in our room and almost the last to receive drinks and food. Never got offered for refills and when we asked, waited over a half hour for them and had to have someone else bring them. Orders were taken down wrong and waited almost 45 minutes for our ticket because the server was confused. The cook even commented on our server. We were the last table to leave the room even. Our comp= free dessert to share with the table even though we already had 3 birthday ice creams coming to the table. Had to find a manager and the best she could do was 10% but had the attitude like she couldn't figure out our problem. Together, the table spent over $300 and received a $20 meal service.

I wanted to give it lower than one star today. I sent my son's to go get some fried combination rice I get three shrimps two pieces of beef and 3 pieces of broken up chicken. I worked in a a Chinese restaurant on authentic one. This has to be the worst combination fried rice I have ever seen. Now my sweet and sour chicken came out fine in my fry wontons came out fine too. But this combination fried rice double zero. I am very disappointed with the food. Any other time when I go in and dine in with my family is very good service and food.

The waiter had a tooth pick hanging up it of his mouth and would constantly touch it, our food was sub par and the light was so dark it was unpleasant.

It wsd our first visit. We opted for a table rather than the hibachi grill. I ordered the mongolian combo and my hubby had combo lo mein The food was excellent. The sevice was ok, not the best but not horrible. I will be added to the list of our date night restaurants.
Nakeia Council-Daniels
The restaurant was busy but our wait wasn’t very long. Friendly staff, good drinks, and delicious food. The Hibachi was lots of fun. I was visiting from out of town but would definitely go back!
Logan Sammons
We did the hibatchi grill and were seated next to the kitchen door. Looked into the kitchen to see piles of food, napkins, and trays they bring the meat out on laying in a puddle of liquid on the floor. Employees walking, as well as the carts that your food is brought out on wheeling trough this filth. No one seemed to care to clean it up. Most disgusting kitchen I have ever seen.

Went in on a holiday before the movie and they said they don’t have happy hours on holidays. Ironically, every other restaurant and sushi place does. Turned around and walked out.

Shrimp so tough and hard you couldn't eat it. Yum Yum sauce wasn't even offered until most in our party were done eating. Salad dressing was so watered down it had no flavor and just ran off the salad. Ask for more water twice and never got any.
Darryn Smith
Our hibachi Chef was hilarious and fun at the same time. Service was pretty good too. The chef flipped a piece of shrimp in my mouth on the 2nd attempt after he cooked up everyone's meal. It was a fun experience and I plan to be back soon with my friends. I definitely would recommend this restaurant. Thank you everyone!

Great food and great service!! We will definitely recommend to all our friends!
Tamara Brenner-Estes
Between the four of us, we had a little bit of everything from sushi to hibachi & it was all presented well and delicious!!!

We had a great time celebrating my 60th birthday. The service was great and our food was very good. Our nephews age 10 & 5 had a great time for their first time. The gentleman that prepared our meals was so nice to them and to our 2 year old niece. The only thing that was not up to the standards we have been use to was the lack of cleanliness of the over all restaurant. I think deep cleaning the doors, floors, benches, and give the walls a fresh coat of paint would give you 5 ✨. The over all experience was pleasant though. Just needing a little TLC.

Waited over an hour to get seated but it all worked out 2 beers on the house and the food was wonderful I’ll be back

Food was excellent, juicy steak and crisp veggies. Entertaining as well, kept my 6 yr old entertained so there wasn’t any issues keep him in his chair.
Nate Henry
Sushi rolls were decent, but the wontons are very good. Average beer selection. Not too busy when I went during the week either.
Grace Brooks
I really enjoyed the sushi here. It's fairly expensive, but worth it in my opinion. One of the better places here in KC. Also has a few hibachi grills. Very nice place and I liked how the restaurant was decorated.

I spent my birthday at Stix and LOVED it. We sat at the sushi bar and the guy making the rolls, sushi and sashimi was super friendly and the size of the portions were larger than I expected and have been served at other places. The food was fresh and affordable. The guy making our sushi made me a special spicy seafood salad I absolutely loved. I recommend this place to people who love Sushi, portions are good and price is reasonably affordable without quality being compromised.

With it being my birthday they gave me a complimentary dessert (Ice Cream) I thought it was sweet.
I will be going back soon and often!

I enjoyed my experience here, went here for lunch and the lunch special was good. I ordered a roll of sushi and I liked it, not the best I've ever had, but good. Our server was nice and helpful and the service was fairly fast. I left satisfied.
JC
Disgusting!!!! Worse hibachi/sushi ever!! Don't waste your money at this location. I will never come back..The food wasn't fresh, everything taste it old/awful

Worst Asian food I've had in a long time. I ordered veggie tempura, miso, and the crunchy crab roll... pretty ordinary things. I actually think the tempura was served with watered down soy sauce. the sushi was terrible, had the flavor of mayonnaise. I could've prepared better miso with a packet of miso seasoning. I wanted to like the place because of the decor and good music but I absolutely hated it and will not be coming back.
Bill Clay
I was really torn on giving a thumbs up or down. The place is clean, but the dark lighting and annoying loud music sort of ruins the atmosphere. Sushi was good, but overpriced.

Cattle pen. Stix is a cattle feed lot and if you want to fell like a you are a head of cattle go there. 10 freshman students all in formal dress and flowers for their first homecoming evening were told they could not honor their 7:00 o'clock reservation for 45 minutes to an hour. STIX has no intention of honoring their reservations. They are only interested in moving the largest number of dinners (cattle) through their feed troughs.
Drobinson87
Horrible service. The staff is the worst around. Went for a birthday party they forgot to sing to the little girl then mouthed off to her dad when asked about it. Food is over priced and facilities are dirty.
Lyndsey
The two blonde hostesses up front are terrible. They constantly skipped us claiming they said are name so we sat next to the desk and they never called us. When we did finally get a seat and ate it was very delicious but if I walked in and saw those two up front again I would turn around and walk out.

Lost opportunity. I really enjoy the atmosphere and decor of your restaurant. I also think your sushi is perhaps top 5 in Kansas City. Unfortunately service is something needing immediate improvement. We started the night off by waiting one hour AFTER our reservation time. (opportunity #1 for the manager to be a hero - offer to buy a round of drinks while we wait) We then received less than quality service as our waiter acted as if we were an imposition and rolled his eyes each time we ordered drinks (opportunity #2 - we want to give you more money - keep the drinks rolling and make heavy profits). Then there was a situation with one of our guests meals. It seems the chef did not bring out enough food and someone did not receive half of their meal. (opportunity #3 for the manager to be a hero - offer to discount by half or comp the entire entree) Unfortunately the manager was more interested in arguing the value of shrimp and the vegetables served rather than taking $10.00 off our tab. We spent over $500 as a group and the principle of taking care of your customer and doing the right thing was out weighed by an argumentative manager who was more interested in debating the value of shrimp than taking a fair value off a tab to make good for their mistake. As a business and a unique restaurant, you have the opportunity to be an amazing jewel in The Legends, unfortunately you have struck out with this patron and at least 10 of his friends.

The food was decent, except the "ginger salad" that came with the meal. This salad was lettuce with watered thousand island dressing. It tasted exactly like thousand island with a minuscule amount of ginger grated on top. It didn't taste anything like the ginger dressing I've had at countless other Asian restaurants.
Melanie Moore
Decent service but desperately in need of a deep cleaning. The food was mediocre and I would not recommend ordering sushi. Perhaps the Hibachi side is more fun?
Lora
Veggies need changed. My family and I love Hibachi style cooking. However we think that Stix needs to make a few changes. The veggies are terrible!!!!! Very hard and sometimes seem as if they havent even been cooked! Why cant you make changes and prepare the veggies like other Hibachi places. Gojo's by far blows Stix away in this catagory!

The atmosphere was excellent with great service. My server was friendly and took time to talk to me about my day. The only negative was my order. I ordered the Spicy Thai Beef Salad; after waiting 20 minutes I was told they were out of the dressing. My replacement order was quickly served with apologies. Nice experience!

Enjoyable.... This is an multi-Asian restaurant, so it doesn't really specialize in one cuisine. We usually order sushi and other Japanese items. But there is a bit of Korean, Thai and Chinese. Haven't had the hibachi grill and don't plan on it (not our thing). Everyone seems to like, though. The sushi is pretty good, but it's a smallish menu. So don't expect a lot of creative rolls. However, what they do have is pretty good. We really like the kimchi roll, which is a special item not on the menu. But you can ask for it and they will usually make it. Gyoza and spring rolls are good too. They have a sushi bar, but it's small and closer to the door than I would like. So we get a table in the "Asian Dining" section. It's usually busy, so call ahead or be ready to wait.

I have been eating at stix for several years and I love it. I have always eaten in the area where they prepare the food at the table. Today, however, we decided on menu service. The food and price was the same but the portion of rice was about half as much. We will not do that again.

Poor service and management. Went for dinner on a Sunday 15 July 2012. We sat at our table for over 25 min with no service. I asked for manager. Manager did nothing to make things right. Waiters appeared to avoid having to work. We left unserved...

I have been a regular customer to Stix for years, eating lunch there roughly once or twice a week for at least a year and a half. I moved away and I haven't eaten there in a few months. I went there today (6-9-12) for lunch and was pretty disappointed. Not with the chef (Shawn was awesome, as he usually is) or with my waiter and waitress (buzzed head guy and Annie both did a great job, too). The food was great, but what upset me was the management and the pricing. I have eaten lunch there literally hundreds of times. The lunch price is almost $10 cheaper than the dinner price, with no difference in food. The management changed their policies and won't use the lunch menu on the weekends. I HAVE EATEN THERE FOR LUNCH ON A WEEKEND AND HAD THE LUNCH PRICE. My visit today will be my last. Not because of the chef or wait staff, but because I am very upset with the management. I felt cheated, and I'm very disappointed in the way the restaurant is being run. Hopefully they will fix this problem, but I doubt it.
Also, as a heads up, the entree pricing on hibachi has gone up, and they are now charging extra for fried rice. Apparently the price of soy sauce and eggs has gone up quite a bit!

It can be busy but the Hibachi table is worth the show especially if you bring first-timers (think chefs playing with knives and flames!).

Will not go back there again,. Not a friendly place. Our waitress never opened her mouth. I guess she did n ot know how to talk. Gdaughter found a gnat in her salad. Daaughter talked to person at computer station, said to bring her another salad. Waited 20 minutes before they started cooking our food. Another 10 minutes for white rice, after I spoke up to the cook. Waitress never asked to refill our drinks, Oh and by the way hername was Jamie. Never a thank you from anyone. After the ubg incident we decided to stay and eat. That was a disappointed $100 meal.

We went there the first time or hibachi and it was real good and has a lot of fun. sushi was ok didn't taste as fresh as other places I've been. The chinese was horrible, even our waitress agreed. We prob will only go back for hibachi.

Sushi was fresh and tasted great. I wish the sushi menu was larger and had more variety.

Save your money!. I accompanied my neighbors for a combination birthday, anniversary celebration late afternoon lunch. Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated immediately - but we were the ONLY customers. It was the WORST service I have ever experienced anywhere in the KC area in 30+ years. During our meal, the staff came out with cans of furniture spray and commenced to using it within arm's reach of our food. Our waiter assumed we were finished or should I say wanted to hurry us to finish and brought our ticket to us without asking once if we needed or wanted anything, which we did - mistake. One of our party had never had Fried Ice-Cream so we ordered it for dessert. It came to us not fried. The pastry was cold and doughy, not golden brown. We asked to see the manager, whom came to the table, explained to her our dissapointment with the experience, service & food. She looked at us expressionless and proceeded to recite what she obviously had many times before sorry, she would take the dessert off the check...staff has to clean the dining area...could not have cared less. I would like to comment that the staff was constantly on private cell phones, at one time every employee at the same time. This was while we tried to get the attention of SOMEONE for drink refills. Horrible staff. Will not recommend this place to anyone and will go out of my way to inform persons to steer clear. P/S - the food was nothing special and overpriced

Generic. Stopped in to have lunch. The restaurant decor is beautiful. The service was excellent. The food was OK. Just plain OK sushi (five rolls for a $35.00 lunch tab) is not OK. I couldn't give it a "don't like" because the service was so great. I would have to go back for a second try to give it a "don't like". I just don't want to go back!
Mariangrace
Hibachi not my idea of fun. Went to stix last nite to celebrate child's bday. I will not ever go back. Quality on par with a casino buffet. Felt rushed and not enough room around the table to move. Also not enough room for plates, drinks, etc. It was chaotic and noisy. I think Stix is perhaps on par with every other jap. steakhouse, but I continue to wonder why people continue to frequent. I don't want to play cheerleader to the chef. This type of dining is the opposite of cozy and relaxed. They consistently squeeze more people into a table than they should. Feels like cattle at a trough. I expect so much more when paying $25 per entree, especially when 3 of those courses are a few tbsp's of broth/soup, slammed together small bowl of lettuce, and 50 cents worth of rice. It's fun once. . . .if you're 10. If your heart is set on hibachi, I don't know if Stix is any better or any worse than your other choices in the city. I just think your money could be spent better at a more traditional asian-themed restaurant.
The Food Carpenter
It Will Do.... Now the idea of good sushi in KC might be hard to swallow, but Stix delivers a decent selection with good taste. There are better places closer to downtown, but if you're already at Legends, then this is it. If you prefer the hibachi, then you have that option too, but I like it in the main dinning room where I can just relax and drink my sake.

Had reservations and had to wait 1 hour to be seated. i am still waiting in line as i type

Poor Customer Service at Stix. On July 19th, my colleagues and I decided to try Stix for the first time. Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience. Their bar was not fully stocked, and did not carry several liquors, including sake that is listed on their menu. When we tried to ask for a substitution for the same price as the out of stock cold sake (a difference of $8) the management said no. Not all of our Sushi choices were delivered to our table. We had to request our Sushi order menu be shown to us, and the waitress explained the chef overlooked the other items. No amends were offered until the very end. The assistant manager, Jeremy, offered us a round of drinks on the house. I pointed out that the round of drinks would exceed the price difference of the sake substitute ($8), but he still refused to supply the substituted Sake. My lone martini was $10. We did not understand their reasoning, especially when we spent alot of money, and would have spent more if they had tried to accomodate us. I tried to contact the manager Hoang on Monday, but he was too busy to accept my call.

If u want a dinner and a show then go to stix very fancy very good

The food and service were good. I would definitely return. Although, I owe Brian a trip to Yard House first. There are so many good places to eat in the area, you really have to do some juggling. Yumm
