Review Jerusalem Cafe - Kansas City

David Peck Jr.
Restaurant was clean and had a nice atmosphere. Service was quick and friendly. Falafel was good, dipping sauce was a little runny. I enjoyed the lentil soup more than I thought I would. Beef kabob sandwich had good flavor. I’d rather have hummus as a side than Cajun seasoned fries. My girlfriend had the dill chicken sandwich and said she liked the flavor. Price was alright for the food. Would eat here again and suggest to others.

I could say a lot. But memories. That hummus(beef/lamb). 😍. Most of all. One of the most honest smiles I’ve seen from a staff with a heart of gold. My waitress just seemed like she couldn’t be nice enough to me. That is getting really darn remarkable lately in this world. Please tip them well and support this business.

I've been here several times and I love the food! I am vegetarian, and one of the things I like is the wide variety of options here. I came in tonight with my parents. Awni was our server, and he gave us excellent service. He was very friendly, attentive, and gave good recommendations. My dad had the shrimp kebab and absolutely devoured it. I usually get the falafel sandwich. This time, I tried the vegetarian pastry plate. It was a LOT of food. Everything tasted great! I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a chill spot to eat delicious Mediterranean food. It's also affordable.

I had great service and a fast lunch here. The waiter confirmed the lentil soup was vegan friendly. I'm a falafel junkie and enjoyed my sandwich. Honestly I was surprised at how much I liked the French fries - they were perfection! The location is really nice and has an up-scale feel. There was a fair amount of nearby parking available. I will definitely be back again soon - either for dine-in or carryout!

A friend of mine suggested I try this place while I was in Kansas City. The hummus and pita were amazing! The veggie gyro and chicken Philly gyro were delicious. They have really good fries. The Greek dressing on the salads is super good. I got the dolma and baklava to take back home. The dolma just wasn't up to par and got thrown out, the baklava was perfection, I should have ordered extra!

This is the first restaurant that we have tried since arriving in Kansas City. The restaurant was clean and artful. Our server was great. For starters we had lentil soup, za'ter, taboula salad, falafel ,hummus and stuffed grape leaves dolama I believe . I didn't like the za'ter maybe I will try it with meat next time. I've never cared for falafel but this falafel was the best I've ever tasted in the history of falafel. It was a beautiful sight and the interior was so rich and delicious. The lentil soup was perfect and the dolama was good too. The hummus ...oooh that hummus was the second best hummus I've ever tasted. The best was found the next day at a restaurant in Chicago but I digress. This hummus was so creamy flavorful and spicy. We couldn't get enough of it. I was already a bit full when the main course arrived. We had a bit of everything: gyro meat, kabob, lamb, chicken with rice. The gyro meat was seasoned to perfection. The kabob and chicken had no taste whatsoever and the lamb was a bit tough. The ball was definitely dropped there. It was disappointing considering how great everything else tasted. For dessert we had a beautiful red kunafa. It was thinner than what I've previously had but it was just as tasty. I just wish it had a bit more of that oily substance. I love kunafa. For our drinks we had mango lemonade and strawberry lemonade. The colors were bright and both flavors were perfect. Great place to eat and hopefully the meat will be better the next time.

I am not familiar with Middle Eastern food, so I can only comment on my experience and taste. I ordered the Jerusalem Feast for Two. We started with the Hummus (5) very tasty, filling, and satisfying, the falafel balls were excellent (5). Next, we shared the Lentil soup which I found very tasty as well (4). The Lamb and Chicken Kabobs on top of seasoned rice was very good (4). Last we had the Baklava for desert (3) and tried the Turkish Coffee (3). All together, it was a nice experience to eat something totally different. The waiters are very friendly and helpful with explaining the different dishes . Would I go back? Yes, there were other dishes I have yet to try, especially the Falafel and Gyro dishes.

Yesterday I had the blessing of being able to eat at this phenomenal restaurant that has been in Kansas City for quite some time now. I still remember fondly going to the original location at 431 Westport; but this updated location at 515 Westport Road, is truly worth it.. I had the Grilled Kabob Sandwich (you can choose from many different meats, such as: chicken, lamb, beef kifta or beef sirloin. I chose lamb) which was excellent and fresh. Also comes with either soup or salad, I chose the soup. Which was a rustic lentil soup blended with spices, almost had a kick to it. And you can choose from either fries or rice with the sandwich.. After eating at the Jerusalem Cafe for many years now, I can’t express how much you’ll love this place..

I've spent 13 years traveling across the country full-time and finally established roots here in KC. Mediterranean food is our favorite to seek out everywhere we go. With that being said, this place has set a new standard of quality and service. I can easily abd honestly say this is the best Mediterranean food I've had with some of the kindest service I've had. The only negative thing to say is how horrible full I am right now.

In KCMO for a night and it’s always a struggle to find gluten free and vegan options in new places. The kind folks at my hotel recommended this place and it did not disappoint. Super friendly staff, great attitude even though I walked in about 15 min before close. The food was exquisite! I got the falafel + hummus plate and sub’d out pita for veggies, lentil soup + salad. Yum! Highly recommend.

I was dining alone and the staff was very kind and hospitable. I felt welcomed and appreciated. The food was phenomenal. I had an appetizer platter, and they kindly made a substitution. I adore the babaghanoush, and everything was delicious. The restaurant is comfortable and attractive. You really can't go wrong choosing Jerusalem Cafe.

Been here late at night after drinks and at lunch while working. Wonderful food, service - music, atmosphere unique. Very affordable.

This place has been great for years. An absolute Kansas City staple. It's definitely changed over the years, it's in an entirely different location than it started out in! Food has always been great, and as of late they seemed to have developed quite the irreverent and jovial attitude! They have a t-shirt for sale that proudly proclaims the wearer to be a "hummus-sexual" I don't know, makes me giggle a little.

I love Mediterranean foods! It makes me feel good, healthy, happy! Like medicine, but it's delicious:D

Food- 4/5 ⭐️ Service- 5 ⭐️ Cleanliness-5 ⭐️ Ambiance- 5 ⭐️ Value- 4 ⭐️ Location-5 ⭐️ Options-4 ⭐️ It was tough deciding whether to give this place 4 or 5 stars. Ultimately I give 4 because there are some things that need improvement. I brought my niece here as a graduation gift. This is where she chose to eat. We came as a party of four. Upon entering we realized it was way too cold inside, so asked to be seated outside. She sat us outside in the sun, which was a bit intense, and there was a table in the shade, but since we had already asked to be moved, we didn’t want to make any more fuss. So we sat in the sun. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful. We ordered a blueberry lemonade, mango lemonade and two frozen mint lemonade’s. My blueberry lemonade was too sweet so I didn’t finish it. The mint lemonade was amazing! We ordered a falafel and hummus plate as an appetizer. The hummus was very plain. They had a kind of relish on one end and a hot sauce on the other end, but even so, it was a very bland hummus. The falafel was very good! Crisp and fresh. The tahini dipping sauce was ok. I ordered the gyro platter. It came with a deliciously seasoned and unique rice. It also came with a spinach spanakopita, roasted vegetables, fresh tomatoes, tzatziki sauce, and some feta cheese and Kalamata olives. The carrots were not cooked long enough but the rest of the vegetables were good. The meat was very good! I don’t order gyro very often, but this was seasoned perfectly! My daughter and niece both ordered the dill chicken pita sandwich with Cajun fries. They were not Cajun seasoned fries. They were just regular fries. The sandwiches were delicious. They both could only eat half of their food and took home the rest for later. My husband ordered the shrimp plate because he wasn’t very hungry. It came with 5 grilled shrimp. He said it was very good. The restroom was actually really nice. I took a picture because it was really cute. The total bill was $120 with tip. I might return here, but I would skip the hummus. Wear long pants and long sleeves if dining inside!

The food is Very Fresh and delicious. Highly recommend getting some Dolma and any of the sandwiches. Service is definitely better at this location than in Liberty. But the food at both is outstanding. Highly recommend stopping by for lunch or dinner.

If I could have rated this a 10, I would have. We ordered and asked if we could customize somethings so we could try more, and our server was happy to do so. They even gave me extra pita bread to take home with my leftovers. It was top notch. Fairly quick but we didn't feel rushed. And the flavors of everything we ate were wonderful! Have to recommend the lentil soup and the falafel as it was the best and my favorites (very hard to pick!) If I am ever back in KC I know I'll be making a stop here.

Great Restaurant. Amazing service! Great food! I pretty much recommend it to everyone. Arabic/Mediterranean food is available there! Enjoy a great service!

We stopped in here because the place we wanted to try was too busy. We're glad we did. Very friendly waiter. We had the hummus for an appetizer.  This was our first time here so he brought us a bean soup to try. It was very good and filling. We had the gyros. We will be back.

Amazing fresh food. Seems to be family owned, but it's the best Mediterranean food and best gyros in Kansas City. Very casual, not super elegant, but great tastes.

Good place to have good Mediterranean food. I love their Pitas and their hummus is also worth mentioning. Definitely give it a try and you won't be disappointed at all.

Great food and Amazing service. LOVE this place.. I've heard so much about it and I finally got the chance to enjoy it. The food flavor was great and smelled wonderful. <br/>We had help from all the servers and each one of them was knowledge and friendly. Rose took the time to explain the menu and made great suggestions.<br/>I would defiantly come back and recommend this place to everyone.<br/>Thank you for the wonderful experience.

Good Food, but Steep Prices. I used to go to Jerusalem Cafe when the portions were larger and the food was cheaper, about ten years ago. The food is still good but the quality has gone down. I still love the hummus, but I can go to other restaurants in the City Market like Tikka House or Habashi House, or Olive Cafe off of James A Reed Road and receive the same great taste for a more reasonable price. The flavor, spices are sometimes even better there. If you want mid-eastern, I would go to another restaurant and try their food.

Best Gyros in KC. The beef/lamb gyro is AMAZING!! Sauce, lettuce, onion, meat, pita...every detail is perfect. So happy I can hit their food truck at night in Westport. Incredibly filling for just $4 (off the truck). Don't miss it if you are out in Westport one night and have the munchies.

Tried it.. Didn't like it.

After reading all the reviews we were very excited to go to Jerusulum cafe and experience their food and hookah. I have to be very honest and our group of 6 was very disappointed with the service and the kabobs plates that some of us ordered. The server was unattentive and the meat was dry.

Had to remove as a favorite.... Very, very disappointed in Jerusalem Cafe. It's pretty obvious that the wealth of alternate Mediterranean/Middle Eastern restaurants in the area has bumped JC down the food chain. They've become complacent, knowing they have the regulars to tide them over. Everything was lackluster, boring and strangely bland. Pita was not warm or fresh, tasted musty and stale. I was shocked by how far they had fallen.

Authentic. One of the best gyros I've had since coming to the US.

The best middle eastern food. I went to this restaurant with my family, my mom and dad having never tried middle eastern food before, and my entire family loved it. We are from a small Kansas town, and if it isn't steak, it's hard to beat, but this place competes. There is a lovely variety of the different middle eastern foods, and the restaurant is family-owned by some very cool people. The two men that were there were very friendly and welcoming, and just plain fun to talk to. There are pictures of Jerusalem and the decor of the restaurant is plain and clean, nothing extravagant, and it makes it feel like you are just over at someone's house eating. Put simply, this was just fantastic, delicious, healthy, and such a great cultural experience! I love this place. I wish I could ship some right now, 5 hours to my hometown!
Birdman1960
Great falafel and hummus pita! With pita, salad, beverage, tax and tip cost was about $12. Service was not friendly but the food was great.

Don't eat the gyro meat. Don't order any of the gyro meat, both the lamb and chicken was presliced and packaged. Truly a dissapointing experience, lacking an authenticity. Plus why would you eat here when you can go to Alladins Cafe?

More than just a local cafe. It is not often a restaurant does more than provide good food and good service. Considering myself a bit of a foodie, I dine often, and expect the utmost service and quality; however, one local spot went so above and beyond at a recent dining experience I felt compelled to share. <br/><br/>Having just completed an art class, two friends and I were looking for a good meal a bit off the beaten path. Something we didn't have everyday and was a good local spot. We decided on Jerusalem Cafe, for some great food. We had all been here several times before and enjoyed it immensely. The hummus, baba ganoush, and dolmas we ordered as an appetizer were simply delectable. Warm pita bread accompanied the sample appetizer platter. Conversation came to a halt as moans and groans of pure delight echoed from our table. The quiet dimly lit restaurant was surely bothered by the sounds of joy coming from our table. <br/><br/>Then came the main course. We had each ordered some sort of pita sandwich, two of us the gyro, and one shawarmah chicken. Again, our conversation stopped and the cacophony of happy eating continued. <br/><br/>Then the noises from our table turned, and turned quickly. My friend yelled in a panic to call 911, as his wife shook uncontrollably, her eyes seemingly rolling back. Screams came from across the restaurant, other patrons starred as we quickly tried to figure out what was going on. The convulsions lasted for what seemed like hours, but really only minutes. <br/><br/>Within a few more minutes the fire fighters and EMTs arrived, completely disrupting this quiet, dimly lit establishment. Service halted while everyone starred to see if she was alright. "A seizure", the paramedic said, "we need to take her to the hospital." Time continued to move slowly, and all focus stayed on my friend. Our server and the manager both quickly jumping to do whatever we needed. The EMTs loaded her up and off to the hospital we went. <br/><br/>Once the chaos had calmed and the doctors assured us she would be okay, we breathed. And then it dawned on me. We had walked out on our tab, something none of us had ever done before. The next day I went back, looking to thank our server and the manager as well as pay our debt. I met the most gracious manager. He immediately recognized me and said "is she okay." I replied yes, and that I needed to pay our tab. He refused. He said, "Just make sure she is okay, this one is on us."<br/><br/>Too often we go through life and are disappointed by the compassion people share. For us, that Wednesday evening we experienced great compassion that will not be forgotten. The food, always fantastic, the ambiance exactly what we wanted, but more than that a place we truly feel treats its customers as neighbors, not clients. <br/><br/>Thank you Jeresualem Cafe. We look forward to our next, hopefully less eventful, visit.

Food so good, we cried a little. We go to Jerusalem Cafe at least twice a month. The first time I had taken my husband to enjoy their wondrous food, he bit into a falafel, his eyes welled up and he said, "this is, just.. oh my gosh!" <br/><br/>The staff is always so kindly, and helpful, and I do love the decor inside. <br/><br/>The food is wonderful.. my favorite being the stuffed grape leaves, and the baklavah. But EVERYTHING I've tried their is so delicious especially that yellow rice! The location is lovely! <br/><br/>I would recommend this place to everyone!

Delicious! My husband and I absolutely loved this restaurant! We shared there dinner for two, and everything we tried was amazing! Their baklava was to die for!

Jerusalem Cafe is very good! It's an interesting place to get good food and enjoy a nice, relaxed atmosphere. Te service I had was great! They weren't pushy but always made sure our drinks were full. I've been several times and will be going back!

We've been going to jcafe since our teens. LOVE the hummus, other metropolitan areas have their most popular med't spots- let's just say they can't compare. Glad to see that the. 39thst location closed- it gave the westport spot a bad rep. Best hummus EVER!!!! The house dressing can't be beat. And on demand chili sauce- this is by far one of our family favorites. *****

Yes please. A great place for meat eaters and vegetarians!! I am obsessed with the falaffal sandwiches! I even like to mix up what I get on them and you can never go wrong. I like to switch it up every once in a while and I am never dissapointed. The lintel soup is by far one of my favorites! Baklava fan? STOP HERE!!!

Yum!. A must stop place each time I make my way through Kansas City. I always leave feeling satisfied and there are price ranges, if you are careful, for nearly everyone. I love the falafel sandwich! Hard to pick anything else; although, I have sampled many other dishes and have loved each one!
Rick
Gyro. Really disappointed with the gyros here. they use prefab thinly sliced gyro meat. I am a stickler for the sliced off the meat hunk broiled with some char. but on a up note, the lentil soup is so good here

One of my favorites in Kansas City. I've been coming here for years. Jerusalem Café has in my opinion the best hummus anywhere.

Hang out. I used to love to eat at the Jerusalem cafe back in the day when I lived in Midtown! Once and awhile I make it back to my roots and drive to Westport just to eat here. It just isnt as good as it used to be? Sad

WTF?????????. BIG TIME OVERRATED!!!!!!!! And way too expensive for what you get (I'm talking quality). I have traveled the country and this is one of my absolute favorite cuisines. Trust me, this is average at best. Walk a half block and go to Aladdin's.

GET THE GYRO. BEST GYRO IN TOWN!!!!!
Lora
Scared. Heard this was a really nice clean reasonably priced eatery with great food choices and good food. Last week a few from work went and all three were ill all afternoon. They all ate from the buffet and all ate different foods. I am going to pass on this one I think.
John
Average food.. The food is average and bland.
Martinezcm
Horrible salty food. One of our worst dinning experiences. The mouton kebab, it was not lamb, was overcooked, dry and hard. The hummus was salty and too runny. The Greek salad, a joke on Greeks. The prices high for the quality , that, and the lack of a liquor license, rounds up a very bad experience for a chilly winter evening. They could not even serve a non cardboard textured pita bread. Resembling a visit to one of the holes- in- the-wall restaurants in Jerusalem is not an excuse to serve this kind of food.
Queenbeethatsme
Expected more Middle eastern flavor. One of the worst meal experiences that I have ever had. the food was beyond bland, it was terrible--what is it about the Midwest that either makes mediocre chefs gravitate to here or allows chefs to produce mediocre food knowing most people have never been out of the country or even to another region of the states and have nothing to compare it to? Word to the wise KS: food should not just be edible--when proclaiming an ethnic identity, food should resemble and taste like the places they purport to represent.<br/><br/>Horrible food. Tasteless and poorly presented.
Karen
Jerusalem Cafe in Westport. One of my favorite places in KC to eat. Love the chicken kabob sandwich - wrapped in fresh pita with cucumber yogurt sauce... and the humus is yummy!
Lucas Hutmacher
Good but.... The Jerusalem Bakery is better bang for your buck. Still, cant go wrong with hummus.

Upscale good Middle eatern food where I took my wife for our first date. This place in Westport has a special spot in my heart as it is the first place I took my wife for our first date 15 years ago. The menu offerings are not all that extensive but what is have is very good. I especially like the flaky pastry encasead ground lamb dish which is very good. The ambience is very good since this first time I took her here and we came other times. The service is good. I wish they would change the menu little more and offer new things once in awhile but I guess they keep going with what works and that is fine. It is nice to come down and just stroll around after the meal too.

Not the best. Why go here when you can go to Cafe Aladdin? J. Cafe, as the kids call it, hits a flat note for food.
Clara
Jerusalem Cafe had us hooked the first time we visited and tried one of their pastry plates. We kept coming back and ordering the same thing. This time was no different, except we shared the meal as we were not very hungry and we know from experience that the pastry plate is rather huge. First, we started with a lentil soup:
