Love this place. The food is heavenly. I had the beef tenderloin again. It practically melts in your mouth. Great place for special occasions. Reservations are best. In the summer you can dine on the patio.
The best burger I've had! They have a limited lunch menu, but it was great. Soup was out of this world. Being a chef, I'm picky. This place is a must eat place. I cannot wait to try their dinner menu.
If you are looking to get away from the typical chain restaurants & experience an authentic quaint experience this is the place for Iowa City area. Friendly staff & great food (ask for Sam). Went here for a romantic date with my wife & did not disappoint. Answered all of our questions & the wine selection was impressive. No complaints.

A Real Treat. Tuscan Moon is a place we'll go back to. What a delightbul experience! We had reservations for six people, got seated immediately. It's a beautiful old building, looks repurposed but we didn't ask what the building had been in another life. It's not very big, but is decorated beautifully. Our server was there right away, water was poured, plenty of time to look over the menu but didn't wait too long for anything. I ordered the salmon, which was just perfect. It came with two sides, I chose sauteed veggies and a baked potato, both nicely cooked. My husband got the prime rib, which he enjoyed, said it was cooked as he asked, medium rare. I had a yummy moscato and he had the house wine. Two at our table also got the salmon. One got a pasta, but I didn't ask him what he thought of it. Looked good. Another ordered soup and bruschetta. Everyone was well pleased. This is a great place with nice ambience. The tables are a little close to each other and as the room filled up, it got too noisy to visit. There was a guitar player for dinner music, but it was too noisy to actually hear him. It seemed when he started to play that people raised their voices to talk over him, which raised the noise level even more. That's not really a complaint, more an observation but yet something the management might work on. There's outside seating that we would like to try next time, when the weather is warm enough. All in all, a really nice experience.
Expect to have a leisurely meal at the Tuscan Moon. The service is friendly but none too intrusive. If you're in a hurry to get to your next destination you might be put out, but if you're interested in enjoying the company you're with it's just about perfect.
We found the food to be excellent. Our steaks were done perfectly and the garlic mashed potatoes were no less enjoyable. Make sure to save room for dessert. Both the chocolate and lemon cream cakes were wonderful; the lemon cream was an especially light and tasty end to a great meal.
I love this place. The food was great I love the atmosphere and food. The staff was amazing and very friendly staff the new chef changes the entire place! Definitely going there again

The one less traveled by. The Tuscan Moon is one of those places that you are lucky to stumble upon once in a lifetime. Nestled in the heart of Kalona it's unpretentious exterior façade underlies the exquisite dining experience that you'll discover within its walls. The food is a tour de force for the lucky soul who appreciates the careful selection of ingredients and the intricately-nuanced combination of flavors which produces the type of food that will linger in your memory far longer than on your palate. The wine list receives the same meticulous attention as the food and its depth and breadth will afford the fortunate gourmands the ability to select a wine that they will relish as much as their meal. If you desire assistance don't hesitate to ask and the owner cum maître-d will assist you in selecting a bottle of wine which will be the consummate compliment to your food. Beyond selecting the Tuscan Moon as your dining destination, the penultimate decision is to go on a weekday night when you can be afforded the full attention of the wait staff and kitchen and you can have an intimate and luxurious dinner.
Excellent service and tasty food. We spoke with the owner about the previous poor review and were told that they were concerned and wanted us to judge for ourselves. We were very happy. Atmosphere, attitude, food, and service were all excellent. I recommend you give it a try!
Ideal Getaway from the City. Kalona is a great place to get away from the hustle of the city. The drive from Iowa City is quick and beautiful, through countryside full of farms. On warm days you'll pass many Amish buggies on your way. The Tuscan Moon is the perfect place for a relaxing and romantic lunch/dinner date. The building itself is beautiful, the people are friendly, the food is wonderful, and it's right next door to the most excellent Kalona Bakery! Most of my friends prefer the Tuscan Moon to the Linn St Cafe here in Iowa City. Additionally, during warm weather, you can eat on their little outdoor patio decorated with trellises and flowers. As the name would imply, they serve mostly Italian/Mediterranean food: pasta, beef, chicken, lamb, salmon, shrimp, and an excellent selection of gourmet sandwiches for their lunch menu.

...the chocolate creme brulee was more like a chocolate mousse than the usual custard, but it was topped with the traditional caramelized sugar shell.
I loved the Tuscan Moon Grill on Fifth. Outstanding service and meal! The Tuscan Moon has the best wine selection I’ve seen at any restaurant in Iowa. All of the staff were very personable, courteous, and helpful. I highly recommend the Tuscan Moon Grill on Fifth for any special occasions or just a night out with that special someone!

Very unique environment and a HUGE selection of wine. Crab cakes were absolutely delicious. Was pretty unimpressed with my prime rib dinner, as half of it was a giant chunk of fat, but ya win some ya lose some. The garlic mash potatoes were also incredible. Thank you for the great experience!
Very good food, especially considering its geographical location. The wait staff was very attentive, even noticing when our kerosene candle went out, and relighting It for us.
My only complaint is that, though there were many, *many* empty tables when we arrived for our reservation, we were seated right next to a window that had been broken and then covered with either thick paper or cardboard and then taped into place. There was an awful draft, and were cold the entirety of our stay. For reference, it was 14°F when we arrived and 5°F when we left.
My husband and I have been coming here with our group of close friends for several years now, for celebrations of all kinds- always a great experience! Fantastic wine selection, delicious food, fun atmosphere. Sam was great on our most recent visit this evening, she was attentive and had great recommendations. We always appreciate them accommodating our larger group, but especially during such a hectic time for the food industry. We feel lucky to have this great option in small town Iowa! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Very very good meal, even with the limitations.
My wife and I went here for the first time last night. We loved the atmosphere, staff, service, and food. I had the chicken marsala which I thought was done perfectly. My wife had the salmon which she thought was also perfect.
Our waitress was very pleasant and she seemed to be completely focused on us having a great experience. She took the time to help us decide on an appetizer. The shrimp bruschetta was amazing! In the course of our meal I noticed her and the other servers taking their time with other guests. I also noticed them walking very quickly when they weren't at a table. This is clearly the result of proper coaching by the owners and is much appreciated by their guests.
Tuscan Moon has an excellent wine selection and the owner apparently has a reputation as a bit of an amateur somelIier. I was hoping to have the owner pick a wine for me, but at the last minute my wife suggested a beer. I will be having wine next time!
As far as the limitations there are two.
The first is that they have a very limited menu. Which is understandable given that they are not a huge restaurant chain.
The second limitation is that all of their desserts are good, but not all are exceptional. Specifically the Tiramisu was a good solid Tiramisu, but my wife felt that it was a bit sweet for her taste.
We will definitely be going back soon.
Food and service was impeccable. From what I understand, everything is made from scratch, right down to the salad dressing, which is delicious. I definitely recommend this place if you are in the Kalona, Iowa area. I would also recommend reservations, but they are not necessary. Update: I recently went back. It turns out that you can order individual lamb chops as an appetizer. I'm not sure if this is a new thing or I just noticed it, but they are amazing! I have had lamb chops all over the country and these are the best I've ever had, even better than my personal home-made ones, which is saying something. I am now addicted.
