Shirley in the Woods is a quaint little restaurant that really shouts mom and pop! My husband and I love to experience mom and pop shops whenever we can! Sometimes it's a horrible experience but ever so often we find a gem! This little restaurant was packed from the moment we walked in but the waitresses buzzed around with smiles and warm greetings. Given the fact that it was a full house, I'm sure we waited a while for our food but it wasn't a difficult wait at all. I love that this little restaurant has checker boards painted on all their tables! I uploaded a picture for you to view. My husband and two sons played contently with the checkers until our breakfast arrived. What I love most about this innovative idea is that instead of seeing families and couples on digital media, they played a time tested favorite! Right on our table!! Kudos to Shirley's in the woods for combating the digital age with old fashion fun! The food tasted great and had insane portions! I didn't realize it until I got my plate but everything they make is homemade! The bread was homemade thick slices just like grandma used to make!! We drive through to pick up our son from summer camp and this was certainly a worthy stop! My husband changed our regular route on the freeway and we found this gem! I think we have a new regular route.

Amazing!! The service was great, very personable- food was fantastic! I had the all-you-can-eat fish & could only get through 1 plate!! Homemade bread was awesome, cannot say enough wonderful things about this place!!!!
Love this place. Great place to eat, big portions for a good value and lots of homemade food , I always buy a couple of loaves of their homemade bread when leaving. Try it once and you will be back. Right by the Bluebear ORV trail head parking lot off M-72 so you can ride over on a dirt bike or atv even, but its tough to ride back with all the left overs, lol.
This was amazing. The food, homemade, delicious, creative, loved it. The staff is so friendly and accommodating and adorably chatty. We had blueberry pancakes and the breakfast pasty (mind blown) but don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu.

Amazing! Very home feeling atmosphere, amazing hot food. Homemade fresh bread, seriously this bread is phenomenal. Helpings are large with very good pricing. Staff is very friendly. They have checkers printed on the tables so you can play while you wait for your food. I loved everything about this place.
Nice place for very good breakfast all good and very fast service.....great people working here a must stop when anywhere near here...
When we travel we always stop in small towns and snag breakfast. We've probably been to over a hundred breakfast restaurants. My husband orders biscuits and gravy every time and we track his ratings (he's like a biscuit and gravy connoisseur). Very rarely does he award a 10/10 rating... but today he did. 🙂 So delicious. Thank you!
Great food. HUGE portions and reasonable prices. Only complaint is the 3.5% surcharge for non-cash transactions. Everything else was excellent.
Love this place the service was top-notch very friendly staff food was hot and fresh with their own homemade bread and homemade buttermilk biscuits for their sausage and gravy, definitely would recommend trying if you're out in kalkaska area.
We stopped in for breakfast on our family vacation in Michigan. We loved the food and the service. We will definitely stop by if we come back this way again. Highly recommended!
Small in size but excellent customer service and great food. Family of 5, sat at the bar, server was amazing. All the servers were eager to help each other and the atmosphere was like a home town favorite for out of town visitors. The owner, Shirley, was serving coffee, cooking, and was very personeable. She gave us advice on places to visit and even wrote down detailed directions to places out of towners wouldn't have found. Kids meals were large in size and greatly priced. My husband and I ordered the Pink Lady and the Sams fav. Pink Lady was phenomenal- sour dough bread, spinach and red pepper, salmon, basted egg, and topped with hollandaise. I was pleasantly surprised by this place, and if I ever find my self back up here, I will def. Visit again. BTW Shirley- we visited the place you suggested and the boys had an amazing day.
