Weird that there are so many negative reviews. I eat here at least once a year when visiting and the experience has been pretty consistent over several years.
The most consistent negative thing I could parse out from other reviews that I agree with is the looseness of the rolls. The nori is not tight and sometimes is broken, which results in the roll partially falling apart. While not something the restaurant would want to happen, it really only detracts from presentation.
The fish is always good - never had anything that was old, slimy, fishy, or anything else some of the other reviews say. I get a huge variety of platters including nigiri, specialty rolls, and poke, so I feel like it’s an adequate mix of their offerings.
The menu is varied and should have something for everyone. There are no written descriptions of the rolls or platters. They rely on pictures on the menu (which I uploaded as of September 2023), but they’ll explain it all if you call or enter the shop.
In summary, if you’re in the area and have a hankering for some good sushi, Waipuna Sushi is a great choice. If you want poke, the Food Land down the road is a better choice, but Waiapuna’s (limited) poke choices are serviceable.
Had sushi catered and it was delicious. The prices are also very reasonable.
Holy cow this sushi was delicious! The rolls are HUGE!! 4 rolls was way too much for 2 people but each one was amazing and some of the best I've ever had. 10/10
What a pleasant surprise. This little understated sushi counter in the Safeway shopping mall blew me away.
Both rolls were unique in design and bold in flavor. The staff was kind and courteous and it didn’t take long to get the rolls. I watched them make them fresh. Taste was clean and fresh! There was no “fishy” smells or after tastes. At $15 a roll I was hoping it was going to be good, and instead it was fantastic. Just moved to the neighborhood, so I already know where I’m going, again and again. $30 for lunch is a lot, to me, and next time I will only order 1 roll because they were about 2.5”-3” round, not the skinny rolls you get on the mainland. But now I have dinner too, so it all worked out.

Very hard workers and sweetest lady taking my order. She was patient and caring. My order was out quick. Good taste. The rolls are huge! Twice as big as anywhere else I've been. Fair warning, the rolls do break apart, just proceed with caution.
Sushi is made to order and fresh. We always get the Platters for parties. Staff is polite and personable. Sometimes there's a wait depending what time of the day. But overall the food and bubble drinks are good.
Sometimes the simple things in life are the best. Stop here, you'll be glad you did.
Not sure what the negative reviews are about. Good not Great Sushi. Its not Nobu but its not 7-Eleven either. Great for a quick take out lunch.
Pretty good sushi, but not very traditional. If you are looking for unique rolls and friendly neighborhood vibes, then this is the place for you. I recommend their Catherine's maki and any of the specials on the walls.
