New management and ownership have greatly improved the food and the service. The staff was friendly and very attentive. Someone managed to get in contact with Joe's old cook and they relearned all the old recipes again. Yes, the strange, sweet salsa in squirt bottles is still there on each table, but I did get a very fresh tomato salsa served with my tortilla chips.

Stopped in before the Colts game. The food was great--try the biscuits and gravy. The salsa was excellent. Citrusy with lime, lots of cilantro and a little spice. I will definitely come again.

Good as always. I can remember the first time I went to Acapulco Joe's (probably 40 yrs ago). It was for lunch in the small corner building which used to be across the street--the line was already out the door at 11:30 am. Maybe once since that first visit until our latest (this evening) have we been disappointed. Food and service were great as always--their chili rellenos are the best! Indy is lucky to have a tradition like Acapulco Joe's!

Taco's & B&G. When you go here stick with the taco's,they have the best tasting taco meat I have ever tasted.I have asked if I could buy a container of the meat only, and the people working there, had no clue what I was asking for. They wanted me to point to it on the menu. The biscuits and gravy are great also, and I agree with alot of the others, the rest of the menu is very suspect.

Indy History With Original Flavor. Think you can't get real authentic Mexican cuisine in Indy? You're thinking wrong. Acapulco Joe's is as close as it gets to south of the border--near by, for a decent price, and hefty portions. If you have a hankering for thick and creamy cheese and chili sauce enchilada toppings then go for the Los Tres Amigos dish. 1/4 of it and you'll be full from thick flavor, the right amount of meat, and perfectly warm corn tortillas. (Dish is one beef enchilada, one soft taco, one hard taco).
It's an old restaurant; a slight fixer-upper, so use the bathrooms before going. Otherwise you don't have a lock for the door.

It's yummy! The restaurant is kinda a hole in the wall but the food is great. Yummy chips, salsa and tamales.

Those of you who give Acapulco Joe's a negative review need your tastebuds tuned-up! This eatery is truly an Indianapolis institution, & Joe (may he rest in peace) introduced Tex-Mex to Indy. So those who went to Joe's for Mexican food were either disappointed or pleasantly surprised because of the Tex-Mex food that's 2nd to none!

20 year customer.. I've been going here for as long as I can remember. My favorite place to get breakfast (biscuits & gravy) ever. Love the salsa too!

Coming from Texas and some of the best “Tex-Mex” Mexican Food, this was a little different. They say you can tell his good the meal is going to be by testing the salsa. The salsa was good, different from what i’m used to, more garlic and tomato and less cilantro and heat. The meat in the dish had more of a chili powder taste than southern dishes. Unusual to have to choose between rice or beans and not have both. Overall a good place to try out.

The aromatic authentic flavor and smell from this merchant will keep you mouth watery. Nice out door seating spaces, keen streets view. Charming interior artistic design. Friendly staff and great service. It is also called El Toro. Good food served here. Both Mexicans and American favorites Breakfast.

This was a place I would meet my Dad for lunch. Went back recently and had an early dinner there. The Salsa had changed and wasn’t as good as I remembered. The restaurant inside is the same as 15 years ago, but the food wasn’t as good as remembered.......

I have been going to this place since I was a little kid. It's just awesome! To be honest I have really only had their biscuits and gravy and their chips and hot sauce. But that's all you ever need! They stop serving breakfast at eleven, so make sure to get in before then! There is usually only one or two servers at that time so service is a little slow if business is up, but it's absolutely worth the wait! Once you fall in love with their hot sauce, don't forget you can buy it to take home! They throw in a bag of chips to go with it but once those run out, any of your favorite tortilla chips go perfectly with it as well! Good prices with great food and decent atmosphere. Be sure to read the table settings and get a feel for the background of the restaurant and the founder, Joe.

This is one of my favorite restaurants. I love taco Tuesday, it's a great value and quick lunch. The fresh salsa is perfect on many of the dishes. They have made so many improvements since the new owner took over. You should stop in and give them a try.

If you haven't been for many years it's changed for the better. I'm guessing the place has had multiple owners over the years but the latest owners seem to have it back on track. No real complaints except there was so much cheese on my tacos I had to remove 50% of it. For many I'm sure that would be a plus. They have a hot salsa and it's really good but you have to ask for it. I didn't see it as a menu option plus who has time anyway. It's 50 cents!

I heard good things about this place in the 90s, then bad things about it recently. One day I was heading home from work and decided to try it myself. I'm glad I did. The food was great. I ordered the Chicken Fiesta to go. Chicken was well cooked, cheese melted on top, and I got chips with it as well. Looking back at the menu, I'm not sure why, but they were good as well. Furthermore, this place is not short on value. I got easily enough food for 2+ people for under $10. Don't listen to the negative reviews, they're likely from long ago. If you walk by this place in the morning, you'll smell what I'm talking about. Try it.

I love this place. It's not the most swanky, super authentic Mexican joint around but you get family style dining, the tiniest bar ever, a large city patio and with live music in the warmer months. Ambiance! For a metropolitan Mexican "hole-in-the_wall" steeped in tradition, the food is a decent quality and value, the margaritas exceptional and the staff are pretty genuine and appear hardworking. Sam is the best waitress on the planet. This girl works hard and always has a smile.

Good service and good food. Decent location. They have this amazing salsa on the table in a small dispenser that is REALLY GOOD. Not sure what they call it specifically. The only negative is that the restaurant needs renovations and updating. I don't know if the Historical Society is hindering those efforts or not.

Ok, so this place has changed. But, different doesn't mean bad...or at least it shouldn't. I stopped in here for lunch not knowing the place had changed hands. I liked it! Its not AJ's and we can't expect it to be, but I felt everyone from the host to the busser was really trying to make this a great lunch experience. The food was delicious, the service was great, the price was right and the new look inside is fun! Give El Toro a try if you're downtown Indy and looking for a quick, enjoyable mex-american meal.
