Review Ichiban Noodles - Indianapolis

Alix Clinkingbeard
Ichiban is such a rare gem. I visited today for the first time in a few years and was reminded why I love it so much. The service is so friendly and the food is every bit as delicious as ever. The katsudon is a must for me. Don’t miss out on this place.

Impressed! Very homey atmosphere and very nice waitress who served us. She gave us hot towels to clean our hands before and after our meal. I had the san-sai noodles and tempura vegetables along with a salad with ginger dressing that I highly recommend! Give this place a try soon!

I was skeptical. It's sorta out of the way and the food isn't familiar to me but I liked it a lot. Really tasty and better prices than other similar places in the area.

This place is a great example of hidden jewel. We frequently visited this place before the pandemic. Yesterday was the first time we returned and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was as authentic and good as we remembered. The Shrimp Tendon was delicious as well as the Udon, Donburi and the sushi. Highly recommended!

I have been coming to this family owned restaurant since I was about 8 or 9 years old with my grandmother. That's about 25 years now 😊 This restaurant holds a special place in my heart. From authentic homemade Japanese and Chinese food, to being the place to go to for a quiet atmosphere, I have had so many memories and events at this place. I highly recommend it. It's still run by the original owner Louis. Here is a picture of us! Major thumbs up for a hole in the wall place that stands the test of time 👍

I always wanted to try this place and it was really good. From the outside a bit of a hole in the wall but don't let that keep you away. We all got a variety of dishes. Tempora bento box, sushi, chicken teriyaki and I got the Oyakodon and the only complaint is the egg wasn't poached but more of a fried hard but it was still very good.

Awesome food at affordable prices. The owners are great hosts and give hot towels when you sit down. Definitely would visit again.

I drove past this place for years before finally stopping in to grab some food, some time ago. Absolutely wonderful service and great, great food. Owners could not be the sweetest people. I've been going here for years now!

I was originally going to go to another place to eat but saw that this place was just down the road from me. I went in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the food. I got the Yaki Udon and Gyoza with Miso Soup. The Yaki Udon was tasty and not overly spiced. They do give you spices to add to taste if needed. The Gyoza tasted phenomenal. The pan used must have been pre seasoned and transferred the flavor. Miss soup, while not having mushrooms, had seaweed and I preferred that over the mushrooms. Overall a great lunch. The building itself is older and needs repair but until it falls over I recommend going in and trying it out.

An interesting small place. I had the soft shell crab app. in ponzu and the katsudon, and it was more than enough to fill me up. The soft shell crab was definitely a different take for me, but I loved every bite. The katsudon had a very nostalgic taste. It's was like comfort food and made me feel at home. The service was great and fast. Loved this place.

My newest favorite place to eat! Staff are extraordinary and the food is phenomenal! And very reasonable pricing. The bento box is definitely a go to item!

Business is closed, appears to be permanently as not much left inside. Was here at 7:10 on Wednesday October 14th. Looks like it was shut down maybe only a short time ago but doesn't look like it is being renovated or repaired but just shut down.

Delicious Ramen! The sushi is always great and stacked with seafood. Service is nice and fast. They've recently added more tables too. Great place for dinner for two.

I had high expectations seeing all the great reviews and a score of 4.4/5.0. I love good susho, I made a 30 minute trip just to try it. Be prepared for the lack of curb appeal at this location. My first thought was that my GPS had made a mistake. I had the MISO soup, tuna nigiri, yellowtail nigiri, and shrimp tempura. I expect MISO soup to be bland, but this MISO soup was really bland. The shrimp tempura had a nice coating, but the rice was what really killed it. The rice was mushy, and only slightly more formed than oatmeal. Likely overcooked. The tuna was good without the rice underneath it. The yellowtail is usually my favorite fish, but here it was just OK. Again, the rice killed it. The Wasabi was more on the liquid side of pasty, and not very hot. Perhaps I'm spoiled by the robust spiciness of Wasabi that is more the consistency of Play-doh. The ginger had a good flavor, but it was served more like a ginger puree than slices of ginger. Also, the portions of ginger and Wasabi were about the size of a spherical dime. If you frequent this place, and you like it, kudos to you. I found the whole experience and value uninspiring.

Just like Tokyo. I visited Ichiban Noodles two weeks after returning from Tokyo. The ramen I had at Ichiban was exactly like I had in Tokyo. The food was fantastic, the service superb, and the prices very reasonable. If you are looking for a fancy restaurant this is not it. If you want authentic food, you've found it!

Went to try this for the first time earlier last week and was pretty excited to try it because of all the "likes" and good reviews but couldn't get to try the food at all because after our waiter got our drink order she came back to tell us that the owners had a fight and are closing down for the day. It was very unprofessional- all we heard was an Asian woman screaming at the top of her lungs to her husband. Will not be returning!

Long time favorite for sushi!. I have stopped by Ichiban for years. I used to live in the area so once a week I'd go there for lunch, or call in my order. Sure, the building's not much, but the service was great and I love the soft shell crab roll - can't get one like it anywhere else. I since moved 30 miles north, but whenever I get the chance to come to Indy, I call in an order. And, they remember me! (Well, at least they act like they do - and that's ok - they are very friendly!) A gem on Indy's NE side!

Very nice hospitality. The people that run the restaurant were delightful, you can tell they care about their customers. The food was good as well, my new favorite Japanese food spot!

They're Soup-er. I love this quaint, friendly, little place. They have soups, sushi and some basic Japanese dishes. I am going to focus on the soups....especially during this colder part of the year. Ichiban's soups are warm, wonderful and tasty. There's four basic soups available - tempura, vegetable, seafood and pork cutlet, you choose the type of noodles (Udon, Ramen, or Soba). My favorites for this time of year are the Udon and Ramen soups - I like the pork and tempura soups the best. They use a good, delicate soup, that you can spice up a bit if you like. The Udon noodles are soft and unctuous, The Ramen are tasty...with just the right amount of ...chew. (I like the sobas too...but I prefer my buckwheat noodles cold...with a side appetizer of tempura.)
Speaking of the tempura..., it's crispy, light and full of flavor.

A friend recommended this place to me, so on a girls night out I recommended this place not knowing what it looked like. As we drove up, we thought it was hella shady and were scared to come in. But we did and it's safe to say this is THE best sushi place I've ever been to. And I've been to lots of sushi places, including the hottest places in NYC And the DC area. Definitely gonna revisit

Best lunch sushi around. I haven't been to Ichiban for dinner only lunch, but I've never been disappointed. The food is always very good. The bento boxes make a nice meal, lately we just get sushi because it's so good.

Okay Sushi, Cute Waitress. She was fun, smiled a lot, told me what her favorite sushi was and asked me what kind of beer I liked. Nice lady, hope my cousin gave a good tip. If only I didn't have a girlfriend and/or morals.

94 %...hmmm. So after seeing that this restaurant has a 94% rating, I decided to go. I mean...94%, how can it not be good. I walked into the restaurant and it was hotter than outside. Prime temperature for serving sushi. I ordered one of their lunch specials. Started with a miso soup which was okay. Next came some tempura...eh...had some crunch to it, but was on the verge of being to oily. Now it was time to try the sushi. Salmon, red snapper I think, tuna, and imitation crab. I started with the salmon. Absolutely gross. It was so mushy and warm I almost decided to stop there. I decided to try the tuna (being a tuna lover) and it was room temperature and not impressive at all. I next tried the snapper. People...it was like leather. I have never been to a sushi restaurant where the fish was that tough to eat. I couldn't eat it. I put my napkin on the bento box and gave up. The rice that the sushi was placed on was almost not present and crumbled away as soon as I picked it up. I won't be back.

Decent enough place but the miso was watered down and the noodle fish with seafood I got was just ok. Sushi rice had too much vinegar in it. Might go again but there are better places for sure
Brad
Was hoping for some really good ramen. Was disappointed. Basically just spaghetti noodles in chicken broth. So bland.

Appears a bit sketchy from the outside but don't let that deter you. Great food, great prices and friendly family service. I've had ramen, soba, sushi. All excellent.

Don't let the exterior fool you...I must admit I didn't try this sushi restaurant until recently due to the "look" of the building....BUT the GREAT reviews are true! If you haven't tried their food... you need to....delicious!

Yum. Yum. Yum. What can I say? It's a cozy little house serving AWESOME food. The miso soup is the best I've had, and the sushi (hand rolled to order) is always melt in your mouth good. Chicken teriyaki is delicious as is the mango ice cream! This is one of my go to faves, and the food is just consistently great.
Chris
The owners are Chinese so don't attempt to speak Japanese to them ^_^
The vegetable ramen was yummy. The hint of fish taste added a surprisingly delicious twist to the dish but I'm not entirely sure it was intentional. Haha. They stayed open an extra 30 minutes for us and was genuinely pleasant to have us there. I'll definitely go again.
Guitarplayer99
Disappointed. Used to go to this place all the time and it was always great. The last 2 times we were here it was not as good; the tuna was tough and fishy and teriyaki chicken tasted like it had been reheated.
Julie
This is like eating a special meal your grandma cooked you. Comfort Japanese food. It may have rough edges but if it was a fancy chain it wouldn't be able to be so.... Special.

Must try the Seafood Entree. We went because we wanted to try a new place and reviews we saw have all been good. We got some sushi and that Uni Maki didn't seem to be put together very well, but we went late so I didn't expect the freshest rice anyways. We also got Squid Nigiri and it was amazing, although I don't see how anyone could get that wrong. I got the seafood Udon, It was good. I have never truly loved Udon but it sounded good. Out of the places I had been too its the best Udon I have had. My wife got the seafood entree, and I wish I would have gotten that. I tried a few bits of it and it was AMAZING. by far the best fish dish I have ever had. We will be coming here much more!

Outstanding. Took my son to suchi for his first time. outstanding! we had five different types of suchi and all of it was excellent! fresh and tasty!

This place is EXCELLENT!! It's a nice small place thats great for sushi & other foods. I had the California Roll & chicken box & was more than pleased. I'm definitely going back again soon. Great food + great prices = 5 star!

The best spicy tuna roll ever. They use large peaces of tuna not that chopped up crap everyone else uses. Remember you should never judge a book by it's cover, what this place lacks inhistetics it makes up in servic and taste. I love a restrant like this, where the taste and service come first.

A couple of friends and I made it to Castleton to try out Ichiban Noodles last Thursday. We started with the Gyoza. I have really come to enjoy these, and the ones here were good. I thought the sauce that was served with them was tasty, with just enough toasted sesame seed oil.

For my main meal, I chose Shoyu Soba. This is one the the many noodle bowls offered on the menu. It is broth, soba noodles, crispy pork (breaded, fried and cut into strips), and baby bok choy. I don't have much experience with these types of dishes, so I don't have a basis for comparing to "typical" examples. I will just say that I thought the soup was pretty good, but the stock could have been seasoned a bit more.

For this visit:
Food: 2.5
Service: 2
Atmosphere: 2
****************
Explanation of rating scale:
1: Does Not Meet Expectations
2: Meets Expectations
3: Exceeds Expectations
4: Far Exceeds Expectations
So, on this scale, a 2 is a respectable score. 4s will be very rare. (And hopefully so will 1s).

Excellent service and the sushi was fresh and tasty. Especially loved the Louis rolls! Definitely a place worth searching for!

Great Hole In The Wall. Been going here for years. Great staff, nice lunch spot. Don't let the exterior fool you.

So-so. Good service. We were surprised by the somewhat overpowering eggy flavor of the two fried rice dishes we tried. Could use some signage--we drove past it thinking it was some kind of utility storage.

If you are looking for authentic Japanese ramen, this is the closest you get in Indy. Don't let the outside of the building fool you. The service is good and the food is great.

Great little Place. Started off with the yellow tail. It was very fresh and clean tasting. Followed with the Yaki Udon and salad. The salad was large with a very good dressing. The udon had a large fried pork tenderloin sliced on top of sautéed noodles with veggies, no broth not a soup. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant was very clean. When I went they were remodeling the out side and did not have a sign posted. Looking forward to my next visit.

Really????. This sushi restaurant is so over rated. the atmosphere was gross! the food was average.

Great food. Seaweed salad was great. I got the chicken and California roll Bento box. Loved it. Also got the spicy tuna and Philadelphia rolls. They had great flavor but were smaller than what I am used to. Of course, they were a lot cheaper than I am used to also. Overall, good food, great price!

Great food, caring staff. We thought this place was boarded up, but they're just in there making great food.

It's a very small, homemade-looking/Mom and Pop restaurant with a surprisingly varied menu. Their noodles are indeed the best and taste just like the ones we enjoyed in Japan.

I was expecting more from Ichiban Noodles & Sushi in the Castleton area. Okay, so the outside of the restaurant looks run down, but that usually means the owners don’t have that much free time so they invest whatever leftover time they have into the food. Actually, when you do enter the restaurant, it’s not as run down as you think. It has more of a “handyman” feel to it than anything else. The walls are painted with sandy, gritty semi-muted yellow and the bar is made of various 2×4 lumber, also, painted in the same color: yellow. There are no base boards and the flooring comes in squares. As in dark green carpet squares. It will remind you of the basement remodel project that you wish you could have done. Or maybe you have done. Now to food: Looks tasty doesn’t it Unfortunately it’s not. The Yaki Udon is what it’s called. It’s crispy pork with thick, soft wheat noodles. They noodles are made well, but the taste is very subtle. The noodles are thick, but th

The ramen noodles are served stir fried, and not in a bowl of broth--they were really good and had a nice distinct flavor without being overly greasy. There were probably almost as many veggies mixed in with the noodles and I loved that they were cut almost the same size as the noodles.

Several years ago, after an extended visit to the annual New Year’s car show, hungry for sushi, we visited Ichiban. I remember it being small, but not as small as it was on this evening’s visit. It’s the size of 1/2 a house. It has a three-seat sushi bar
