Review Fujiyama Steak House Of Japan - Indianapolis

Monika
I've been in the US for three months now, traveling and creating content. This week, I wanted to spend more time with my boyfriend's family, so they took me to one of the best hibachi restaurants. I decided to review it on my TikTok to show my appreciation and support for this amazing place. Don't be surprised by the price, as it's quite expensive for me, but it's worth every penny! I highly recommend coming here with your family to celebrate any special occasion, as I saw another table celebrating a birthday. They have THE BEST SOUP, the name is FUJIYAMA SOUP, I told the staff they have a good soup and I asked “Can I have one more?” and they gave me one. Everything was perfect. l definitely be back again!

Came here to celebrate the life of a dear family member. We wanted somewhere special that we have never been before. We were looking for an escape from the norm to reboot and recharge. The atmosphere was mostly modern decor with some Japanese art on the front doors, waiting area up front, behind the Sushi Bar and the out walls. I personally prefer more where I feel like I am transported to another time and place. The hostess seated us promptly and their was no wait as we arrived soon after they opened at 5 pm on a Friday. When she handed us our menus she pointed out the general categories for us to begin analyzing. The service from our waitress Shah was five stars and she seemed very knowledgeable and could talk in great details about every query we had. The hot Green tea came with a pitcher where I was immediately able to refill my cup which I like to do. The house salad was simple but the ginger dressing was very good with only a hint of ginger which I prefer it stronger myself. Shah asked us what we thought about the dressing and said it was just freshly made which made me assume thy may be tweaking it based on responses. Even if not I love my waitress asking about my food because it makes me feel like they care about our experience and take pride in their hard work. The Sweet & Sour soup (house soup) was very flavorful I noticed while the mushroom was dancing on my pallet it was a perfect blend and balanced. Next was the main course of steamed white rice, Hibachi mixed vegetables (onions, zucchini, and mushrooms), bean sprouts, nine grilled medium sized shrimp and Teriyaki chicken. If you want to try this for yourself order the "Geisha Special" which are traditionally Japanese entertainers known for their skills in the art. In this context I interpete it as culinary art. The vegetables were great and the rice and sprouts were as one would expect. Now for a few dissatisfactions. There was an unexpected longer than expected delay after we finished the house soup and salads. We didn't say anything but the waitress twice said it wouldn't be much longer. Her observations knew even while we remained silent that this was not good. It is not the waitresses fault if the kitchen is not ready no matter the reason. I felt frustrated by the situation and empathy for the waitress who was put in a very awkward position. She was dependant on another segment of Fujiyama and had to be the face of the restaurant to us the customer. Again she did more than her role and earned her tip with nothing withheld. When our order did finally arrive the portion size was more than I could eat and left with a to go box. The protein of shrimp and chick was neither bad nor good but just okay. Again this was a "special" on the menu and the price point reflects this too. My expectations were higher than what was delivered from the kitchens timing and specialties. For these reasons I lowered my service rating to three stars where the hostess and waitress Shah deserved five stars. I also had to lower the food rating because of the above when the side items were worthy of a top rating. The atmosphere was rated on my personal preference and I understand for some it would be exactly what they want. I would go back again but be more picky on what I ordered. Overall their were pros and cons which is what makes the world go around.

Excellent as always. Jamica is the greatest server. The food was wonderful. I dont like California rolls, so I get my Bento box without. It was only $30 to $50 per person cause we always order a crazy amount of food. It is very reasonable. Soooooo much better than Benihana. We go out a lot. This is our favorite place.

I had a good experience here. The sushi was good for the price, and the waitress was attentive. My only complaint is the visible dust on the light fixtures over the tables. But other than that it was good.

Has been our go to for Christmas Eve for several years now. Last night was a bit of a disappointment waiting for an hour past our reservation. I hope this doesn’t continue and the issue gets resolved. Would love to continue this tradition but really threw the rest of the night off. 5 stars for always great service, food and atmosphere. Hope to be back soon.

My fiance and I decided to go out on our last date before hearing our baby's heartbeat and seeing them for the first time, and we couldn't have chosen a better place. We didn't sit in the hibachi area but definitely plan on coming back to sit there and enjoy the hibachi experience they provide, but the seats in the general dining area were both cute and very comfortable for the lower back pain I've been having with pregnancy. The staff was extremely nice and helpful, and the food was amazing! I ordered a bento box and it was so much food for the price! I was scared that it would be super expensive, but it was surprisingly affordable for an appetizer, 2 meals, and 2 desserts. I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed with this experience and will definitely be going again.

We were seated right away but it was 5:00 on a weekday. We had the tempura calamari and dynamite strip starters followed by 4 rolls. We had the Sakura, yoshi, snow mountain and continental rolls. All very good. The continental one was outstanding!! We stayed just up the street and passed it on our way to the hotel and decided to try it. Being sushi lovers, we were NOT disappointed.

Food quality was excellent... as usual. I think they were overbooked and as a result were pushing people out like an assembly line. 1st time in 15 years of xmas eves here and saddened by the use. Cook was awesome and did a great job.

spot for consistently delicious food, amazing service, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. I've celebrated countless birthdays and special occasions here, and each time has been truly memorable. The staff is always friendly and attentive, and the menu offers a wide range of options to satisfy every taste bud. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone seeking an exceptional dining experience! My favorite meal is all their bento box!

This was my first time here with coworkers and we all had a wonderful time! Food was great, service was timely and there were many items to choose from. I am looking forward to my next visit!

Food was good. I myself like kabutos better, but that's just my opinion Our chef was hilarious and put on a great show while making a tastey meal. Server made sure my cup was always full and empty plates were taken quickly.

If you’d like to be entertained before dinner and watching your food cook right before your eyes served from the Grill to the plate this is the place! Food was great I would recommend the fried rice over the steamed rice but overall five star all around!! This is my girlfriend’s favorite place❤️

The bento boxes are a bit pricey but worth every penny. Excellent staff, very friendly. We eat here several times a week for a reason! Excellent sushi combinations.

Ok, I have never have Japanese food, but this was great! The wait time was like two seconds. Our waiter, and chef were very well trained and friendly! I got shrimp, steak, and white rice. Those were very good. If you have some extra free time definitely come here!

Wow! Excellent service, excellent food, excellent entertainment! Excellent experience! Our Chef, Kahn, was professional and funny. He cooked the food to perfection and our server, April, met all our needs. (It was our family Christmas get together dinner.) We've been here before b I t this visit was especially great. Thank you!

It was my first time, and it won't be my last to dine in. I had a great time watching my food getting cooked in front of me and enjoyed every bite of the shrimp and scallops plate. The employees gave great customer service. This restaurant is a hidden gem and I highly recommend it.
William Forgey
Had a reservation and had to wait 45 minutes to get a table. Thank you for your quick response. The food was fantastic as always and so was the service. We will definitely be back.

10/10 would recommend. Top notch service ✅ Entertaining chefs ✅ Good food ✅ If you have an occasion or a celebration you’re missing out if you aren’t hosting it at Fujiyama!! I can’t wait to come back.

A few people have suggested we try this place so we went here tonight for dinner. We most certainly will not return. The hibachi dinner prices were higher than other hibachi restaurants nearby, but we don't mind paying for quality so were hopeful the meal would be delicious. We shared a shrimp tempura roll as an appetizer. It was nothing special. Then our entrees were brought out. I ordered extra veggies -- no rice -- but my veggie portion was small and hardly seemed like I had "extra". My shrimp was also overdone and rubbery. My husband ordered fried rice with his filet mignon meal, but we were told that a large party of 6 apparently ate "all the rice" and there would be a wait for more. That wait was 25 minutes. By that point, my husband had eaten all of his steak and was served a small bowl of fried rice. When you spend $75 for dinner for 2, you would expect a much better dining experience. No offer to comp anything for our wait. No visit from a manager. Perhaps this was just a bad night for them, but we definitely won't be back to give them a second chance. We'll stick to nearby Hana Japanese Fusion, where the food quality is superior and so is the service.

To be honest, my meal was not that great. The missus was pleased with her sushi but the meat in my Chicken Treiyaki entree' was dry and without flavor. the fried rice also lacked flavor and seasoning. At least the beer was cold, served in the bottle with no chilled glass. Service was good. Server was mostly on top of things and knew how to explain all the menu items. I ate in this restaurant when it first opened decades ago. IMO, it was over-priced then and over-priced now. I understand P&L too. Can't say I will be back.

Here to visit Indiana from California & I gotta say food was good, cold, but good.......1st half, we were seated right away since there weren’t many people. Got our sake, soup, & salad. Ordered Hulk Sushi, which was great!! 2nd half, server brought our plates, boyfriend had shrimp & chicken, I had ribeye steak, I myself got my rice, boyfriend waited since it wasn’t ready, I myself had all my food, but no knife to cut steak, so we waited & waited & waited till finally bf rice came & my knife as well! Finally, but food was cold by then!! Price here is way cheaper than Cali! Wish I could’ve given a 5 ⭐️!

Greetings.... My food was tasteless and cold, not to mention portion was minimum. Needed a lot more garlic butter! Chef prepared food for coworker, her plate looked better than everyone sitting at table paying. I will not ever go back, it was not worth the cost nor travel. Totally disappointed.

I am not from Indiana. I am from the Boston area. We don’t have any out our way. But we do have many hibachi places. This one is by far the best one I’ve been to. The food was absolutely delicious. If I could have eaten all of my food I would have but I was to full.

Best sushi on the Southside of Indianapolis! More expensive than any where close by- but for a good reason. They have some of the freshest sushi I have ever found in Indy. Their hibachi is good, but to me, their sushi is by far their best feature. I've seen some negative reviews about the staff, but have never had a bad experience with anyone here.

We were in Indianapolis visiting our sons and took them out to Fujiyama's for sushi--something neither of them had ever tried before. I'm proud to say they became instant sushi lovers! We started off with the miso soup which was delightful. The ginger salad was delicious--it had a yummy hint of toasted sesame. We ordered the tuna tataki and aged tofu as appetizers. They were both good, but could have been better--the ponzu sauce the tofu rested in had very little flavor and the tataki needed more sauce. The rolls were phenomenal: the paradise roll--coconut shrimp, almonds, cream cheese and more...so good, krusty krab roll--crab toasty crumbles on top of another yummy crab roll, sakuro roll--my favorite with shrimp inside and salmon with a yummy lemon aioli on top...rich and tasty. Check this place out!

Don't bother making a reservation.. Made a reservation 1 week in advance for a 40 th B Day dinner. Upon arrival was told it would be a 1 hour wait - minimum - but ' not to worry ' they would not seat any walk ins before us.
We left and had a lovely dinner at Napoli's - downtown Beechgrove.

Terrible. I made reservations and had my confirmation email. Then days later they cancelled my reservation. No fault of mine. Very unreliable. Now the day of I have no way of getting in anywhere else. Never going here again.

Fair at best. 2.5 of 5 Stars.
Made dinner reservations for 7:30 Friday night. Arrived at 7:12, but NO available parking spaces...waited a few min, and finally decided to park at hotel across street and walk over after seeing others do this. Walked in at 7:21 and was told we'd be seated closer to 7:30. Went to bar (if you can call it a bar...it was so tiny, only like 8 seats), and after 10 min finally got a drink ordered.....had to pay for it right then and there though, which was stupid. At 7:50, asked hostess about being seated and was told they were having a lot of people leaving right then, and would just be a couple more minutes, as soon as the tables were cleaned. At 8:15 our buzzer went off, finally, and then we were taken to our table. We were seated and our orders taken. Soup was given to us before any drinks...!? Water and soft drinks were brought about 5 min later, but no cocktails....they didn't come for another 10 min, when they brought our salads. So it's then about 8:30, and we finally can eat our soup and salad.....a full hour after our reservation time. While waiting on the salads/cocktails, the chef comes, and begins with the meal preparation, which I thought was odd. I had the filet, and my wife the same with shrimp, and we shared a shrimp tempura sushi. Overall, the food itself was good, as was the presentation.....but, it was odd to me the way the chef prepared everything....the veg's and shrimp 1st, served them, then prepared and served the main dishes, starting with the seafood, which only 1 person at our table ordered so I was kinda glad of that.....then, bean sprouts....and lastly, the fried rice. Why it cost $2 more, I have no idea and find that to be a little offensive....I mean, it's just freaking rice with a little egg....?!? Oh, and then the tempura came out. So....it's then about 8:50 and what's on my plate of food?.....cold veg's, kinda warm bean sprouts, room temp steak, and hot rice (maybe that's why they charge the extra 2 bucks)....joy. Surprisingly, the food was still pretty good....but I wonder if I was just so hungry by that time, it made everything taste better...I mean, those people on Survivor go gaga over peanut butter and crackers....know what I mean? We had tix to a 10pm show downtown, so had to scarf our food down and move like the wind to make it. We decided to just not go....we HATE having to rush rush rush, and then walk in at the last minute. Between my wife and I, we had 1 appetizer, 4 cocktails, 2 entrees.....cost, including tip, $100.
Parking 0 stars
Hostess/Waiting Area 1.5 stars
Bar 1.5 stars Service 1.5 stars
Presentation 4 stars
Food quality 3.5 stars
Price 1 star
I think when we want really good Japanese food, we'll stick with House of Tokyo.

I recently dined at this hibachi restaurant, and I must say that I was thoroughly impressed. The food was excellent! You could really tell it was of great quality. I had the filet mignon and shrimp, and my husband had the scallops. While the food was wonderful, it was nothing compared to the service! I have been here a few times and the service was just okay, but this time it was just outstanding! The servers name was Emily and she was very attentive. If we asked for anything, she brought it to us without hesitation. Our drinks were always full and she had an awesome attitude. I mean she was really on it. Our chefs name was Toyota, and he had us cracking up the entire time! He even made the fried rice look like sponge bob square pants. It was so entertaining! Overall, you could really see that Fujiyama Steakhouse has stepped up there game. The prices were higher, but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for!

Will never go back!!! My h.... Will never go back!!!
My husband took me here last night for my birthday... It was awful! I didn't notice until we got out food, and started eating. First off with the food, so bland. No taste what so ever! Chef dude had a piss poor attitude! Waitress however was wonderful! Now to the worst of it and completely turned my stomach. I happened to look up when staff was coming in and out of kitchen.... DISGUSTING!!! From what I seen, kitchen was so dirty... Then I started to check and look all around us. Grills look like the have never been cleaned or touched or anything! Should of done this as soon as I walked in.. But the dining areas looked really clean and nice... so that's why I didn't pay to much attention... The carts ugh! They had all the food stacked up on top of each other on pizza pans with no wax paper foil, or Saran Wrap, or anything. The carts didn't looked clean at all! The prices are way to high for this place!! If the food was good... Then I would not complain on prices... But the quality of food um no!! Will never ever go back to this sorry place!!! This place gives japenese steakhouses a bad name!!!

Disappointment. This is the first review I have ever written regarding a restaurant. However, I felt this was necessary. When entering the restaurant everything looked clean and inviting. The greeters were pleasant and we were sitted on time. Given that, as my husband and I were escorted to the back of the restaurant to be sitted we passed a swinging door to the kitchen. It was DIRTY! When the chef came out with the cart that had the food on it, there were several trays of food stacked on top of each other without any plastic wrap, wax paper etc. between them. The food was tasteless. Yes, beef, chicken, shrimp, fried rice etc. I ended up not eating my food and wishing we had spent $50.00 somewhere else. No I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Expensive, but pretty good. I've seen a lot of complaints about the service. When we went we had no issues with service, but we were also there at an off hour. There was only one other table in the entire restaurant.

The sushi was good and the food came out pretty quickly. The waitress kept our drinks full and the sushi chef offered us any extra sauces we wanted. The produce all seemed to be very fresh. While I did enjoy the food, I still think the price was a little steep. The hibachi smelled good but we did not try it.

They are pricey but arent all japanese steakhouses! We waited 20 mins past our reservation time, so no complaint there. We had one of the best hibachi cooks. Interactive and funny! The food was just OK tho. I have had worse and better at other japanese steakhouses.

Maybe it was a bad night...too many Groupons?. We had a Groupon and made a reservation for 4 people at 7pm, then asked 3 more to join. They made a reservation and had a Groupon also. We asked if we could sit together and were told it was a problem but they would accomodate. We waited an hour to sit down, then 15 min til our drinks (all waters) came. We ordered a Spider Roll and were given something else. Waitress never came back to check, so we ate it 15 min later. Soup was great, but salads were full of water at the bottom - yuk! Our cook was awesome and food was solid. However, the fried rice is NOT worth the extra $2 per order (but its free for kids meal, so not sure why they charge extra now). Twice, we had to get our own water to refill our glasses. When our waitress came back, she gave us each our checks and told us we could only use one Groupon since we knew each other. After aguing for awhile, the manager came over and told her to use both Groupons.

Good food but not going back. My wife and I had the same compliants that many had here. Sat down at 6:30 got our food at 7:30. Told the server that my wife had a shell fish allergy and when the food got to the table it had a sushi with crab on her plate even though I asked the shell fish to be on a separate plate. The food was ok, but I have had much better and larger portions for less.

Fun Time!. Had such a fun birthday party with my friends I felt like i HAD to leave some feedback! Our party had two tables facing each other seeing we had 15 people. Both chefs were pretty unbelievable in the tricks that they could pull off, it was awesome to watch. On top of that the food was really good! It looked like they were renovating where I think the bar and sushi bar used to be so we couldn't hang out at the bar prior, but I got a sneak peek and it looks cool so I can't wait for us to stop by next time!

I....Love,,,,This....Place

Never Gets Old. My mother used to take me here all the time when I was little, over the years there has been a few changes, but I think it just keeps getting better and better ! I literally love everything on the menu, from the Jazmine Roll, to the Edamamae, Filet and Chicken with an extra order of yakisoba! YUM. I love how unique Fujiyama Steak House really is compared to other places. I was told that they make their own fresh batch of dressing from scratch! The service is always great, everyone that works there is so friendly. When I enter Fujiyama Steak House, I feel like I'm entering a place where all employees treat each other like family. I HIGHLY recommend at least trying this place. && some other great news I just learned? Fujiyama is open for lunch on Saturdays & Sundays now ! :D Lunch price on the weekends!? This place NEVER GETS OLD!

Had reservations for 8:30 & we weren't seated til 9:30. Food was mediocre for the price.Won't be back

Yum!. Me and my boyfriend were visiting Indianapolis from Chicago and decided to stop by Fujiyama to get dinner. We took a look at the reviews for other sushi places downtown and this was rated one of the highest. A little bit out of Indy but still pretty convenient to get to. My boyfriend ordered a chicken teriyaki dinner and I ordered a couple roles of sushi. Particularly recommend the Playboy and the Crunch Munch rolls! I was very surprised at the quality of the sushi. Its comparable to most of the really expensive restaurants in Chicago, only much much cheaper.

Good service, but atmosphere could use a bit of sprucing up. Will definitely be back next time I'm in Indy!
Tiffany
Very Expensive Good food but not for the price, I have had a lot better food for less. Almost 100.00 for my husband and I to eat. We will not be going back.
Chris Seaman
Not a place I'd recommend... Sat down at 7:20, ordered drinks and three rolls, then left at 8:35 after giving up on the idea of seeing any food let alone getting to eat. Garishly decorated and poor service. I wouldn't say it'd be a wild guess that this place is not Japanese owned.

A hidden gem for sushi. We recently saw the LivingSocial promotion for Fujiyama's and decided to check them out. After looking at the website and their menu we were pleasantly surprised by the large selection of rolls that were available. We saw on their website that they had been operating in Indy for over 25 years, so we left with high expectations.

Since we're from Carmel, it was a bit of a drive down to the south side of Indianapolis. Our first impressions were pretty average. The decor was so/so, it seemed in need of some remodeling, but definitely conveyed pleasant scene. But we were quickly seated at the hibachi grill and served by a very attentive waitress.

There at least 100 other guests in the restaurant but the waitress we had was polite and attentive. For dinner we ordered the Hibachi chicken and steak and the Playboy roll and Soft-shell Crab roll. We frequent Benihana's for Hibachi so we were expecting similar quality and entertainment. To our pleasant surprise we saw some tricks that we hadn't seen before. I was very surprised at the quality of the food that we ordered. The chicken was very tender and the steak was cooked just right. You could definitely tell that the quality of the meat was very fresh. The real treat in our meal came when our sushi was presented. We were expecting traditional presentation with our rolls, but the Playboy roll came out in a tinfoil boat and was lit on fire!

The sushi was definitely some of the BEST if not the best sushi currently in Indiana. I would definitely say that it is comparable to other sushi paragons such as Sakura or Naked T-chopstix. Definitely a great experience! We'll definitely be back for half priced sushi on Mondays and Tuesdays!
Kay
No Thanks. Some of the worst service I've EVER had.

My meal was forgotten entirely. I was treated poorly when I spoke up (we were only a party of four!)

Those that DID eat did not think the quality matched the pricing.

Won't be back.
Daniel Hendry
Extremely good food. I have got the seafood combo as well as the steak and chicken combo. Both tasted great. Can be a bit pricey depending on your budget. Expect to spend $20 - $30 per person.

Not Very Japanese. It looks like what most Americans would think a Japanese restaurant should look like, but the food doesn't taste like any Japanese food I have ever eaten. I lived in Japan for 26 years and have eaten in a lot of Japanese restaurants in the USA. The teppanyaki (iron plate table cooking) was average and fairly typical for this type of dish. Not really good, just average. I have had better. The rest of the menu that our table sampled was not very good. First, the tenpura batter was sweetened. I have had good and bad tenpura in Japan and the USA, but never eaten sweet tenpura. This may appeal to Americans who have never had the real thing, but it is not at all Japanese. The clear soup that came with the teppanyaki meals tasted like Campbells chicken noodle with the noodles strained out. I have never had clear Japanese soup that tasted like chicken and butter. The miso soup was thin and pretty much tasteless. The squid salad which is usually raw or sometimes boiled was cooked in some kind of sauce and was red. It also tasted sweet. The sushi platter that we had was mediocre at best. The fish was not fresh, the rice was either not very high quality or it was old. It was slightly overcooked and the portions (toppings) were small. I admit that I haven't tried the whole menu, but what we had was basic Japanese restaurant fare. If you can't prepare these dishes well, then you shouldn't be in business. This place is not cheap, but for that amount of money you can get better Japanese food in most US cities the size of Indianapolis. I suspect that the restaurant has been around a long time and in it's early years made everything sweet to appeal to American taste, but the American palate has matured with regards to Japanese cuisine. This restaurant might appeal to first timers, but certainly not to anyone who has eaten real Japanese food.

My husband and I live near Fujiyama, and get their Sishi rolls every week or so. The salad dressing, soup, and staff are simply the best. The staff remember my family and I each time we stop by. An excellent, quality place.
Theodore
My favorite Japanese restaurant in the entire city. I'm not kidding. The salad dressing, soup, fried rice, and steak sauce are amazing.
John Merritt
My favorite Japanese steakhouse in the city. Been going since I was in elementary school. Salad dressing is the best and the basis on which I base others on.
