Review Three Carrots - Indianapolis

Heather Hignight
I loved it! Dessert, breakfast, lunch, they have it all! At the cashier was so sweet! The stuff available was decently affordable. I missed it the first time I came here but I'm glad I found it and finally tried them out! Their vegan food is great! I'll be coming back every time I come to Indy! Even my 4yr old loved it here, and we became friends with the cashier too.

An excellent place to grab vegan food, and they do have a bunch of nice options. Definitely recommend the rosemary biscuits with gravy. Tried the tofu nuggets, and it tastes quite good. It's inside the market square and does not have its own seating.

Finally a true 5 star review here in Indy! We had been living in Indy for over a year and Three Carrots is the only restaurant we ate that deserves a full 5.0/5.0! By all means, do not get us wrong, there are some other great restaurants we have visited, but this is by far the best. Just as a reference, we have eaten at 8/10 of Indy's "Top 10" best restaurants and honestly, the food quality and taste of Three Carrots blew all of those out of the water (yes beating out that $150/plate restaurant we ate at!) For vegans especially, Three Carrots is definitely the place to go. Everything on the menu is vegan, so there was no worry about cheese or butter in this or that. The oil and salt levels were also very manageable. We really do care about our health and try to eat a low fat, low sodium diet. This has been particularly hard in Indiana as most of the restaurants we have tried only think of too much salt and oil as "flavoring" rather than herbs and spices. Three Carrots perfectly balanced herbs, spices, and minerals all together in a brilliant display of tongue tantalizing treats. We first got there at 10:45 am and ordered two breakfast dishes, Biscuits and Gravy, as well as Tim's Breakfast Bowl. The biscuits were moist and the rosemary seasoning perfectly complemented the very peppery gravy. The bowl was absolutely fantastic with a nice balance of savory and spicy. We then ordered lunch. The first sandwich was the Seitanderloin. Modeled after the infamous, unhealthy Indiana tenderloins, this Seitan version was absolutely divine. We unfortunately forgot to hold the mustard (not a condiment either of us likes much), but were able to save the sandwich by removing that piece of bread. The chef was also very accommodating when we asked to substituted roasted red peppers instead of pickles on the sandwich (you would be surprised how many restaurants refuse simple requests like that). The breading on the seitan was not too salty, dry, or oily and we didn't feel that gross coating in our throats from too much fat like many breaded "meats." We got a cup of the Seitan and Dumplings soup which we loved and ordered another bowl of it. We also ordered the Seitan Banh Mi. We both loved this sandwich as well. The marinated seitan is definitely the star of this dish as it just bursts with flavor with each chew. It also has a bit of a kick (spice) as jalapenos come on the sandwich and really add some heat which balances nicely with the mayo. Lastly, we ordered the Tofu Kitchen Sink sandwich. This was hands down our favorite entrée of the day. Ignoring the fact that the Tofu was perfectly seasoned (a very rare thing, even in famous San Francisco cafes), the basil pesto and garlic aioli were to die for. Those two sauces made every bite fresh and airy while the tofu was savory and grounded. A superb balance of flavors it is indeed. We ordered a cup of the chili along with this and it was good as well. If we had to pick a "least" favorite item, it would be the chili. Not because it was bad at all, but just different. We really like tomato based chili with a lot of heat. This chili was more bean based with a very warm, earthy flavor. Not sure if it is cinnamon or nutmeg, but something like those were the main spice and just threw us off. Nevertheless, we ate every bit! For décor and service, there is not much to say as Three Carrots resides in the downtown Indy "Market District" building where you just order and pick up your food to eat in the building. With that said, it is still a very cool vibe watching all the people walk in and order from the different food stands. And the chef and cashier were as nice as ever. They talked with us about the food and never hesitated to make sure we enjoyed every bit. As we make our transition out of Indiana in the coming months, I can surely say that if we had to pick one restaurant to visit when we come back to Indy for Gen Con, it would certainly be Three Carrots.

The pulled seitan burger here was delicious! I didn't like the seitan high fives as much, but it wasn't bad and the sauce for it was fantastic :) I also really enjoyed the atmosphere of the city market with all the different food vendors, the big open space and open seating with lots of light, and when I went for lunch, there was a chorus performing for the holidays.

Love this place. So busy, long lines, but handled well, great customer service, delicious, tasty food. Lots of choices. Missed their breakfast cutoff time (11:00).

My favorite lunch spot in the city market. All vegan menu with great flavors and great service. Everything is so fresh and made to order.

The BEST restaurant I've tried in Indianapolis. Spectacular dumplings, the chilli is more black bean based (vs tomato) which I loved. Really liked the Seiten Gyro too.

I never get tired of coming here. I've been coming here occasionally for a few years now, and highly recommend this to any vegans or veg-curious people in Indy! The chef who created these foods is also a really nice guy too, so I'm happy to support nice, local businesses whenever possible. Everything served here is 100% vegan, and there are always muffins and desserts of all varieties lining the counter and in a little fridge off to the side for customers to purchase. I took my meat-and-potatoes family here once and they were all impressed with the creativity and flavor of their respective dishes. I'll say this is one of the best vegan spots in the city. Try it! You won't regret it.

They gave us 2 dirty plates one with a lot of ketchup on it. I was told the cooks must of had it in their hands when they handled the plate. The other had old greens on the bottom like it was setting on top of a dirty plate. asked them did their kitchen HELP come in today. Then there was blue plastic in the grits I got for my 2 year granddaughter to eat. She Had AREADY a half of it by the time I sew it. The service was friendly and fast. Maybe to fast since the plates where dirty.

My favorite place in Indy! I make it a point to stop as soon as I get there and before I leave. If it's your first time I'd suggest either the Rich Girl or the seitanderloin as two extremely tasty staples on the menu and for Indiana. After hat go crazy and don't skip the breakfasts!

As a vegetarian (and aspiring vegan), I was excited when my husband suggested we head down to City Market for lunch yesterday. However, I was a bit disappointed with my experience. I ordered the buffalo seiten wrap with a side of the chili. I LOVED the chili, as did my husband. However, the wrap did not delight me. I found the vinegar-based bbq sauce unpleasant, and in such abundance on my wrap that it rolled into my hands, and down my forearms each time I took a bite. At one point, I held the wrap upside down to let the sauce drain out in a sizable puddle, but I still had sauce squirting everywhere with each bite. I also found the seiten spongy when compared with other seiten products I have enjoyed in the past. Finally, when my husband could find no other vendors still open for lunch in the Market, I was excited to hear that he was actually going to try a vegetarian sandwich! However, upon stepping up to order, he learned that they were out of bread! A sandwich place out of bread 6 hours before closing on a Saturday?! I know 3 Carrots can put out some very nice veggie food, but I think that they are greatly constrained by their current venue. How I wish they would take the next step and open a proper restaurant so that they can really show their stuff to the Indianapolis community. I think the name is now recognized enough, that the Indy veggie community, and those interested in trying it out, would flock there. As it is, I'm hesitant to go back, and I'm sure my husband will not have the slightest interest in trying again at the current venue (he went to another restaurant in town to eat after the no-bread incident, by the way). Thanks for considering. Go veggie!!

Absolutely one of the best restaurants in indianapolis, vegetarian or not. Creative comfort food that raises the bar on all your favorites. I dream about the breakfast sandwich.

The best vegan place I've ever been. Don't know what I would be eating if it wasn't for 3 Carrots. They truly cater to the vegan individual with all foods that are well put together hand made. Love these guys.

I had the Buffalo Seitan Mac with a salad and I would highly recommend it! It was all new to me and far surpassed my expectations. My son was also loving the mac. There was not a thing leftover, it was just too good to put down!

I attend GenCon in Indianapolis every year. This was my first GenCon as a vegan however and finding Three Carrots was a blessing for me. The food was great, the staff was friendly, and the many regular customers gave me faith in humanity.

Thank you for your fully-vegan menu, not only is it refreshing to be able to choose any option on the menu, but it's also nice to know I'm not supporting animal cruelty or exploitation. In addition, the food is AMAZING (to say the least).
