Hunan City Restaurant

We came here on Thanksgiving day after a famishing hike in Zion. The restaurant was pretty empty at the time we sat down but by the time we got our food, it was packed. So no social distancing at the time. The poor server was overwhelmed by the number of people showing up (since most other places were closed in town) and only had another helper who also seemed to be taking takeout and delivery orders. Needless to say, we ended up being here a lot longer than we anticipated because of the rush. We ordered the wor wanton soup, the kung pao chicken, chicken chow mein and Moo Goo Gai Pan with ham fried rice. The soup was excellent - warm, tasty, filling and soul rejuvenating after the wind and cold outside. The kung pao chicken was excellent! Peanuts added a different touch to it and it was spicy enough for us to enjoy it. The chicken chow mein wasn't much to look at but tasty. Maybe a little drier than I like. The Moo Goo Gai pan was the interesting dish. It looked nothing like what I've seen online when I've google the dish. It tasted like sweet corn chicken soup in an entree form. I couldn't make up my mind if I liked that or not. Definitely recommend having it with the ham fried rice so you have some more flavor to work with. Otherwise the sweet corn flavor becomes boring and plain. This could've been a 5 star review but the wait on our food and the crowd was a bit of a dampener.

The service was good, the building old but not dirty, and the food was brought to us piping hot. Unfortunately the quality of the food was terrible. I've never eaten such "squishy" chicken before, the ham fried rice was SUPER SALTY, the soups were weak, and the egg rolls were tiny and filled with only cabbage. To their credit, all of the food we received was fresh, and they were handling a large group at the same time but our service response time didn't suffer. Total for two was 30 bucks....not the most expensive, however, unless the quality of the food improves I will not be returning.

I wanted to eat here, and the person I mentioned this to warned me to not do it. I'm glad I didn't listen! The food is delicious, and there's plenty of it! I ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan Combination Plate, and I walked out full and happy. The combo plate came with soup, fried rice, an egg roll AND chow mein! Also ordered Oolong tea as well. Because of the tasty food, wonderful atmosphere, friendly, caring and attentive staff, I'm going back every single chance I get!

Out of all the options you have in Hurricane Utah, this one is by far, deservant of title "top five". I have been dining here for 15 years now. They have all the classics at very reasonable prices. They have been spot on with two different take out orders for groups larger than 15, and over all very consistent.
