California Underground

Delicious fish tacos. Fun drinks. Small place but really the perfect size. 8 or 10 seats at the bar. Same number of small tables. Middle of the day on a weekend was great. Bartender was also the waitress. She took the time to make us a couple of creative drinks. Also had a house margarita which was good. Been there 10 or 15 times and have only tried the fish tacos. No reason to stray from them!

A strong showing in its first week, this neighborhood bar features a build-your-own taco menu and fresh guacamole a well as a fully stocked bar with a refreshingly festive drink menu. The clientele was an interesting mix of people trying out a new place and seeking to support a local business. It clearly already has a strong following and if the kinks are worked out before summer (running out of chicken, narrow beer selection, and the paper plates are fairly tacky, though it's not totally insensible), California Underground stands to do very well. Service was great, I ordered what I thought was steak tacos, I even paid a little extra, and what I got was more like a sirloin meatball. A warning that real steak isn't used when I specifically asked the waitress about steak options would have been nice. The sirloin meatball meat was okay, but I probably would have ordered chicken or something else had I known.

Second time going here for food. Both times food is really good and as someone else commented here a welcome change to some of the other beach fare. I've tried most of the tacos and sauces and they're all delicious as are the taco bowls. Drinks are a bit pricey. This evening my better half ordered a Shadow Margarita and it turned out to be an $11 shot. Served in a tiny glass full of ice but the drink not even close to the top. Almost said something but decided to go with the Classic Margarita second time around and it was better. Service both times a little too slow and laid back for my taste and seems like the front of the house still hasn't figured out what they're doing. Still a great spot with some good food and the beach right across the street makes this place, in my opinion, worth a try.
