Deli sandwiches are available from lots of restaurants and it’s tempting to give in and visit a national chain, since there are so many of them. But if you want a better deli sandwich, you need to seek out local establishments and one of the best in the Houston area is Houston’s Famous Deli.
Located close to NRG stadium and the Houston Medical Center, Houston’s Famous Deli is a small establishment located in a strip mall. Nothing about it would get your attention- it looks like any other strip mall eatery. And when you walk inside, you will find that it is pretty basic, with tables and chairs to seat about 20 to 30 people, a counter to place your order, and a self- serve fridge containing bottles/cans of soft drinks.
What will impress you at Houston’s Famous Deli is the food itself. They are well- known locally for their muffaletta but the other food is equally memorable. Choose among the different cold and hot subs, then add soup, chips, salad, or other side for even more enjoyment. I usually go for a combo meal, which includes a sandwich, chips, and a drink. The meat is fresh, the toppings are crisp, and the bread is just right. You leave feeling satisfied.
I love a good deli sandwich and I often give in and visit a national chain because they are so easy to find. But Houston’s Famous Deli proves that the best food is found at locally owned establishments. The delicious sandwiches served here, the easy parking, and the friendly service make this hidden gem a place you don’t want to miss.
The atmosphere was real easy-going and the food was super fresh- the service though was the best part of the experience! Incredibly welcoming, made me feel like a regular as soon as I walked in. Great place to stop by for some lunch!
So glad I found this place through Yelp. It's just minutes from my school in the medical center. It's a small family run place with excellent sandwiches and soups. I got the whole king muffuletta (about the size of my face) and a cup of tomato basil soup (super warm and creamy). This is the kind of place to support during the pandemic. Will definitely return!
Great family run sandwich shop. Everything seemed really fresh and the red lental soup was great! They have good lunch specials and it's quick. Would be nice if the sandwich had come with a pickle. Had to give it five stars as I love Deli Zone that I grew up with in Boulder, CO. One of the best sandwich shops!
First time there...HUGE sandwich. The bread and meats were terrific. Folks behind counter were very helpful.
Lunch for our hardworking team yesterday was great. Food was very fresh and reasonably priced. Excellent customer service, too. Plus, the order was 100% correct (a rarity these days.) Surprisingly huge menu that had something for everyone. Very convenient to our office, so we will definitely be back.
Just devoured their Turkey Muffaletta "whole" and it's fantastic and SUCH A STEAL at only $9.99. The bun is perfect and there's plenty of Turkey too. Finally, a place close to my office that doesn't cost too much and has a super great portion of food. Great way to start 2022!!
This place is a breath of fresh air. From the moment you step in the door you are greeted and made to feel welcomed by the owner. 1st time eating in we were given the tomato bisque and banana pudding “on the house to try.” Now each are one of our faves so we purchase at almost each visit along with the King muffuletta sandwiches which are the absolute best! They are huge and filling! This place is a gem....loyal customers here.

We love coming to this great deli. Our favorite thing to order is #1, the King Muffaletta. Two of us can share a whole one and be completely filled and satisfied. It really is the best sandwich on earth. It's a meal in and of itself. We only wish that their hours were later. It's really a lunch only place. Hopefully they will expand their hours soon. I'm sure they are terrific as caterers too.
