So tasty. I had “The Special” which is ham and pork belly with pate. The bread was perfection. Everything was fresh and tasty. Friendly staff as well.
Jessica treated us very well at Roostar! Delicious, fresh Vietnamese soups, salads, and sandwiches. I recommend the Grilled Pork Banh Mi sandwich and chicken Thai soup. The Spring Branch location looks like it's in a sketchy spot, but it's definitely worth it! Also, very reasonable prices!
Where did "Vietnam Poblano" go?! Not to worry, it looks like they changed their name to "Roostar Vietnamese Grill" recently. If you're looking for one of the top banh mi sandwiches in Houston for under $6, this is your best bet. Owners, Ronnie and Linda Nguyen, started their brand in 2013, and they are even opening up their 2nd location in the Uptown/Galleria area very shortly.
Roostar has been recognized many times since 2013. It was featured on Yelp's Top 100 List in 2015, was voted Best Banh Mi shop by the Houston Press in 2016, got a recent mention in My Table as one of the best banh mi restaurants, and was back-to-back People's Choice winners at the 2015 and 2016 Great Bánh Mì cookoffs.
They are usually very busy on the weekdays around lunchtime from the work crowd, so finding parking in their private lot may be a bit tough. It's usually a madhouse inside with plenty of people waiting in line, sitting and dining, and lots of employees in their red shirts scrambling around. The crowds do move in-and-out quickly, around 20-minutes to eat their sandwiches, so you'll be able to snag a seat quite easily if you don't mind sitting close-by to others.
I always order their grill chicken banh mi sandwich for $4.69. This comes with garlic aioli, pickled carrots, cilantro, jalapeños, cucumbers, and soy sauce. I like to throw on an avocado ($1.50) and an egg ($1.29) for an additional fee as well. I only come here for their sandwiches, but they also have rice boxes, soup, chicken wings, egg and spring rolls if you're interested. Go check them out!
Great food & AWEsome service. The food here is always fresh. The Bahn Mi w/ pork is my personal favorite. My regular order consists of: Pork Bahn Mi & the Gogi Beef Fried Rice plate. Tasty goodness!!
And the staff is always amazing! They remember your name, and always ask how you're doing or what's new.
All in all, this is a little publicized, extremely friendly, great gem! Do not pass up the opportunity to try it out!!
Awesome Awesome Awesome! There are so many great things to say about this little gem! I have been in Houston on business and was so happy to find Vietnam Poblano for my vermicelli needs! The first awesome part of Vietnam Poblano is the owner who often run the cashier and provide out of this world service. I had many questions being a new customer and they were more than happy to answer them all! The next amazing part is of course the food! I had the pork vermicelli bowl and I can not stop dreaming about it. If you work in the Energy Corridor this is a must!
They have some of the best bánh mì sandwiches in Houston. The pork belly and the bulgogi bánh mì sandwiches are the way to go with an egg add.
Great place. This is a great place that I'm actually sorry I don't come to more often. It's a crappy side of town... they should be in a place where they'll get more traffic in my opinion.
The flavors are good, evenly priced, and atmosphere seems clean and neat. I've tried quite a a few of their sandwiches and they were great, especially the pork belly sandwich. Interesting that make their own marinated carrots. Fried rice was OK.... not life changing. Wings are tasty, could be bigger. I even liked the desserts.
Also the staff are great. There's this really cute, personable girl usually in the front whose very outgoing and nice. She remembers my name and that's impressive.
Eat here.... plain and simple.
Love this place and the combination of flavors on the sandwiches. Even my wife liked it who typically doesn't enjoy Vietnamese food. Fresh bread, homemade garlic mayo and pickled carrots. The BBQ pork and gogi beef bahn mi are both fantastic, as are the egg rolls. I wasn't big on the spring rolls, but I've never been a huge fan of spring rolls. I've been 4-5 times and it's always been fresh, 2pm, 6pm, 8pm. Clean interior. Friendly owner.
Great Banh Mi. I am very hesitant in trying new Asian restaurants because I had a bad experience in the past where I got sick from the food. But I took a risk and tried Vietnam Poblano for the first time today on 10/02/2013. My first impression was that the restaurant was very clean, which is a good sign. Everything seems neat and tidy up.
I am Vietnamese so I have the cravings for a Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich all of the time. I try to seek out different Vietnamese restaurants to search for the best Banh Mi in the area. I was very satisfied with their sandwich. They have a few variety of different Banh Mi’s. Since the sandwich is their main focus, I am sure that it has a high turnover rate which keeps their products fresh.
I recommend that you try this place out. I will return to try out the rest of their different Banh Mi’s.

This place is why trying different places & not just going to your usual spots over and over again is worth it. In a day and age where the combination of excellent food quality and great customer service are often lacking, Roostar is absolutely an exception! The service was so helpful & friendly that I wish I would have gotten his name to post here. I went later in the lunch hour. It was busy but service was helpful & efficient. When entering, I noticed another customer had an order of fries. Not something that would immediately come to mind when craving a Bahn Mi. But they looked good, so I ordered them. I also ordered the ribeye Bahn Mi. Every bite of both was delicious! The fries were a combination of thick wedges & curly fries that were maybe the best fries I've ever had. The Bahn Mi ribeye was cooked perfectly & the other toppings perfectly proportioned. I loved that adding avocado was an option. I can't wait to go back!
Stopped in for a quick bite to eat. Bahn mi chicken sandwich was great. Very soft hoagie and just the right mixture of meats and veggies. Service was fast. In and out in less than 10 minutes. There is inside seating for small groups of 4 or fewer.
I really like this little restaurant! The staff were super helpful and recommended the beef over rice with egg roll and side salad. The cost for everything was around $11 with a discount. I got their highly favored Vietnamese Coffee which was splendid. It was sweet but still had that traditional bitter coffee taste! And the beef, it was so tender and super flavorful. Bulgigi or however you spell it, flavored! Wow! Incredible. It tasted as good as the picture!!!

Had a fantastic and inexpensive dinner here, service was quick and they were very attentive. I had the steak noodle bowl with Thai chicken soup (like Tom kha gai) and both were amazing, my daughter devoured her pork noodle bowl as well. They have a small selection of beers and hard seltzer, pleasantly surprised. Great egg rolls, one comes with each bowl. My dad had the beef curry and said he would order the same thing again he enjoyed it so much. Looking forward to trying the banh mi sandwich that they're famous for.
I was here for a lunch break. Service is great. Food is okay, not bad. Maybe not authentic enough for me, but I think banh mi looks good and I heard the garlic fries here are amazing. I would try that next time.
I got the salmon and pork belly banh mi and both were delicious! I also got their Vietnamese ice coffee, which was strong but not overly bitter. Definitely will be coming back!
Roostar was amazing so I’ll give 5 stars on this review. The ribeye Banh Mi was one of the best I’ve had. We ordered the chicken wings and I was so surprised you could get a side of beef yellow curry with rice. It was actually really good too! My girl order the special Banh Mi and said it was an elevated version of a classic. I will def come back to this place every time I’m in Houston.
Roostar is probably my favorite restaurant in Houston - I grab it to go anytime I’m in Spring Branch. Their Bahn Mis have won competitions and it’s easy to see why! I love the tofu Bahn Mi.
I have noticed a smell from the grease trap lately but it’s not so strong that you can’t sit to eat there.
I took a group of people to lunch who are a little picky. They liked it so much that they voted to go back the next day as well. That's pretty high praise. The bread on the Banh MIs is a soft French bread, and the meat is well seasoned, especially the pork. The wings and soup are great too! I've been going here for years and still love it.
I love me some Roostar!!!
In my opinion the best Bahn Mi ever made.
The staff is always friendly.
The food is always stellar.
My only complaint is their Chili Paste is no longer available.
