Review Liberty Kitchen And Oyster Bar - Houston

Dierdre Lehman
Pure southern comfort food and oyster kitchen. I can’t believe I’ve lived here for nearly three years, driven by here hundreds of times, and never knew what a fantastic place this is! My mind and palate were blown away! Lunch was so good we came back for brunch the next day with our guys. First time, my friend had the Fried Chicken Sliders and I had the grilled Mahi Fish Sandwich and a lettuce bun. The fries were crispy and hot and our entrees were filling and delicious. From the bar where we were sitting we had a clear view of the goings on in the kitchen where the cooks and prep team were humming like a well established bee hive. Everything they made looked amazing (hence the reason we came back so soon and will be back many times in the future)! Do yourself a favor and don’t pass this place by!! You, your palate, and your tummy, won’t regret it!

At the original LK and it’s been awhile since we’ve been here... and so happy they have not lost any of the great atmosphere to go with the tasty menu. We love the fresh offerings of fish along w all the original comfort food. Poke is a neat twist. The pineapple infused Liberty vodka is great for cocktails...definitely won’t take so long coming back! We frequently sit at the bar to dine as they have good seating options and it’s a bit more lively watching the kitchen at work. There is extra parking in back as front lot is usually full. Love their selection of oysters, the wedge salad is one of the best n town and the brussel sprouts are killer.

First time here today and I love it! The 4 friends I ate with love each one of their meals. I loved my vegan soup. It was filled with potatoes, sweet peas, broccoli, cauliflower, grilled tofu! The soup came with white rice and asparagus salad. The salad is delicious and I will definitely try it at home!

We always enjoy ourselves at Liberty Kitchen!! This time was an amazing experince!! Everything we ate was delicious especially with the bloody marys. Seafood mac was outrageous, the fried chicken was spectacular and the po-boy was out of this world! My new love is the BACON JAM!!

Best oysters in the city. The ambiance is great for business meetings or a date. Clean and centrally located with super friendly staff. The food has incredible flavor and I reccomend this place highly.

I've always loved what this restaurant group has done in Houston. From BRC to Liberty Kitchen, they have always impressed with fresh local fare and fantastic food. If you are looking to eat on the cheap, their weekday happy from 3 to 6 in the afternoon is worth stopping by for.

Well I have to start with the ambience, this place have great vibes. The menu is kind of complicated for someone like me (I'm a comfort food person) but My husband "translate" the menu for me. We ordered the BTTL sandwich, crab balls (best in town for sure) and the American Breakfast (it was a regular breakfast nothing too amazing). The overall experience was good, I will come back for sure but next time I'll try some seafood which looks so good and fresh. The plates are BIG we took everything to go. Our server, Frank, was kind and nice.

Loved this place! Came for Sunday brunch and had some sangria, east coast oysters, and their fried white gulf shrimp w/ slaw, fries, and hush puppies. Everything was delicious and the service was great.

The food was very good. Atmosphere was fun and inviting. The staff was friendly and happy!! I knocked off a star bc they were out of a couple items (breakfast potatoes and sangria) but first come, first serve, right? Lol Check out my picture of my order: Red Velvet Waffles, Fried Chicken, Fried Egg, and Cheese Grits. I thought it was a bit pricey but overall the food was very good quality and very fresh. Waffle wasn't sweet (big plus for me), the batter on the chicken was light and perfectly golden and crisp. I highly recommend this meal and this location! My friends ordered traditional breakfast and the chicken sliders. We all cleaned our plates :)

I wish I could rate higher than 5 stars. Food was devoured by my partner and I in minutes. Extremely accommodating to our needs this evening. You are paying for QUALITY food not quantity. Ordered the surf and turf with asparagus and mashed potatoes. I cant compliment enough the kitchen, wait staff and the manager (Mark). Highly recommended!

One of our favourite spots for brunch in the heights. They have a great menu, our personal favourites are the chicken and red velvet waffle, 1/2 chicken fried steak or the hamwich. The cocktails here are also really good. We have yet to try it for an evening meal but we have heard great things.

Delicious variety of food. Ordered a burger, which was really good and loved the skinny fries and flavor added to them. Love eating at any of the Liberty Kitchen restaurants.

Celebrating my mother's 91st birthday there was just perfect! The bread pudding is sinful.

I just moved closeby I’ve come here three times in two days for oysters. This small place has a great vibe and their happy hour deals are great. $2 Lonestar, $1 great Gulf oysters, $2 for chips with guacamole and queso, $1.50 for two tacos... It is definitely going to be one of my regular spots!
Jason Owsley
Great seafood! Came for the HRW brunch, but ordered from the regular menu instead.
Scott Gadd
This is a terrific oyster bar. Their dozen seasonal east coast market Gulf select oysters on the half shell were simply delicious. The parking situation is a bit precarious but, the mood and ambiance of the establishment is superb. They have a great and knowledgeable wait staff who provide prompt and polite service. Will be back again in the future.

Happy hour is an excellent way to try a little of everything & that we did. Chargrilled oysters, the devilled eggs, raw oysters. It. All. Rocked. Christine took excellent care of us! We will be back!

This is a great restaurant. Great food options with a different menu. Very flavorful. Sunday brunches here are dope with the Liberty Kitchen Mule as a drink. Can't go wrong

Went for dinner with a colleague after a couple of days of meetings, and this was the perfect place to relax and close down. The service was excellent and our waiter made a spot on recommendation with the restaurant week special. The combinations were extraordinary and the meal was a great way to top of the week. Highly recommend anyone in the area to go and even drive a little further than you might - its worth it!

What made it good was company - family. It was mostly fried food, red meat, and carbs. Little choice for veggies or healthy alternatives. The cold slaw was so heavy with apple cider vinegar, I couldn’t eat it. Also, several in our group did not get their food as described on the menu- we had to ask for it. Extremely over priced for the quality and menu choices. 😢
Andy Brickell
The food is great but a bit over the top. We sat on the patio, and it was very comfortable and a bit quieter than the dining room. Great beer selection too.
Anita Sharma
Neighborhood food.

It is a nice place. Great food and drinks. As many other reviews it is a little bit over priced, however, you have to visit it, it is a nice place.

Quick Lunch

We popped in for a quick lunch and was impressed with the service, menu and food quality. We’re in a hurry and they were able to meet our request. Just wondering why they were not more filled up.

If going on Sunday, 10:30am perfect time. Got sat right away before the rush. Bloody Mary was good. Got breakfast Mac and chz which was amazing. Everything everyone ordered was great. Good service. Will return.

I did not like my short rib omelette, however I did enjoy my wife's red velvet waffles and fried chicken. We were in a large group and our service was great by a very chipper and friendly server.

The sign in the parking lot talks about Cajun, but the only thing on the menu remotely close is the gumbo. So the gumbo we had. The roué tasted more like beef bouillon than it should have. I've had better for a third the price. It seems they like to change the menu around. They need to change it back. The menu is eclectic, but not in a good way, and they appear to have forgotten their roots. The mains were OK, but a week after the fact I can't for the life of me recall what I ate. The desert, a chocolate cake, was memorable. Service was fine. Still, at the prices they were charging, I expected more.Forget any thought of Cajun. Find a favourite dish and you may enjoy this place. I didn't.
Not A Foodie Just Like To Eat
We went for lunch on a Friday. Too loud and crowded inside so we sat on the patio. Really good food (pork belly in a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich!) and a great beer list. Highly recommended.
Sue@ NoFixedAbodeForSue
Enjoyed lunch with a girlfriend at this friendly neighborhood restaurant. Had the jungle gorilla burger bowl which for some reason appears under the salad section but really its a burger and fries over an iceberg lettuce smothered with chili con queso, jalapeños and topped with a friend egg - salad right! Delicious for sure! Shared the bread and butter pudding dessert which was delicious but the butterscotch sauce made it just a tad too sweet for us. Will return to sample more dishes for sure as the whole menu had some great sounding options.
Katherine
I went to Liberty Kitchen for brunch. I had the salmon & cream cheese omelette & it was executed perfectly! I ended up with more food than I could eat & the waiters were all very nice & helpful. Only note for the future is that it was very crowded, but that's to be expected for Saturday brunch. I will definitely be back!

Met friends for drinks here about an hour before dinner menu was available. I LOVED a drink called "the white linen " holy cow . It is really dessert , made with frozen custard, pineapple infused vodka and amaretto and raspberry liquor. 2 and I was feeling pretty good . Dinner was delicious , I don't think you can go wrong with anything here.
Nikki Hammonds
We ordered the bigger than your ass platter! Everything was great except the chicken fried steak, it was a little tough. The devil eggs were great (very different) I really like the raspberry bacon jam on top!
Sara LaFaille
Best oysters ever! The Mac and Cheese is out of this world. Really cool atmosphere, with indoor and outdoor dining options. Lots of great cocktails too!
EHL
This place has great atmosphere, friendly service, and amazing food. I sat at the bar and the staff made me feel welcome. I had raw oysters to start and the shrimp/oyster po'boy for dinner.
Winifred McNamara
Right off the bat: if you don't like kids and you don't like to wait for a table - this is not the place for you. They are not overrun with children, but you do see them there. And, sometimes you have to wait for a table. Love the staff. Everyone is absolutely fabulous and they meet your needs effectively and expertly without being intrusive. They have the best malt vinegar coleslaw I have ever eaten in Houston!!! The seafood and sauces are very good. I am not an oyster fan, but their oysters were extremely fresh and I enjoyed sharing with a friend. Salmon and lobster mac and cheese are delicious. Do not leave without trying the bread pudding - rich and decadent - you only need one order to share among four.
Jenny Morgan
Had the brisket hash and I have to say for the money you get a lot of food and it is delicious. Almost too much food. I could live without the salad for breakfast but we all need our greens. Lots of choices to choose from. I will come back and try more. #zomato
I've been here for lunch many times, but never for breakfast. I decided on the jalapeno crusted chicken fried steak breakfast. This was a ton of food. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the steak crispy and not greasy, and what can I say about the bacon jam? Put it all together, and it's a really hearty way to start the weekend. I highly recommend Liberty Kitchen and Oyster Bar for breakfast. #zomato @lkhh

Nasty $20 lunch for one. Had the tuna melt. The tuna salad part was OK but the cold "melted cheese" on top and the soggy (not toasted) English Muffin on the bottom was unslightly and tasteless. The servers were abrupt and rude. Never going back. Too many other tastier options in the neighborhood.
Adventures In A Newish City
Houston is continuing its mission to prove me wrong, and I feel exceptionally good about it. I recently made the statement that Houston's brunch game isn't the strongest . Houston got t.o.'ed about it, shoved Weights + Measures into my hungry belly, and now has smacked me in the face with Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar . And I repeat: I feel exceptionally good about it. ^ I also feel exceptionally good about the fact that the olives and PICKLED OKRA ARE YOU KIDDING ME atop my bloody mary resembled a face! (Or maybe that was my friend vodka talking.) My good friends Lenny and Christy were visiting from Massachusetts recently for Christy's birthday weekend. After having a completely tame large Saturday night out, a big group of us made our way over to Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar the next day for brunch. Besides loving the funny face on my bloody mary, I also simply loved my bloody mary. The mix was full and not watery, and it had a nice kick. But the garnishes were what really sealed the deal for me. The course salt on the rim and the pickled okra (omg) were just the little zingers I needed! The beautiful mac and cheese pictured above was ordered for our table. I tried to pick around the meaty bits to give it a taste, but I couldn't really do it. It looked delicious though, and my friends were all fans! If we're being honest with each other here, I must admit I was very disheartened when I first looked at the menu. There wasn't really anything in the way of vegetarian entrees to choose from, aside from a plain mac and cheese (but sometimes you go to brunch already having had leftover cold Kraft mac and cheese for breakfast, IF we're being honest with each other). Seeing as I am living in the 4th largest city (almost 3rd, WHATTUP H-TOWN) in America, I've gotten used to restaurants - especially popular ones - having a couple of veg options for me to choose from. Maybe I'm spoiled. Fortunately, I've also gotten used to getting creative and piecing together my own meals. S

Well, you are... Are you expecting them to vaccinate you against big city crime while you dine? HPD can't even do that.

Danger! Liberty Kitchen does not care about your safety!. Had dinner there about a month ago. I am from out of town rent car was broken into and $4000 in property stolen from trunk of rent car. I sent claim to them and all I got was a snippy letter from a lawyer saying they were not responsible. No security cameras no security guards and no warnings. This restaurant is not a responsible business.
Davidguerra13
Fried Chicken Experience. Well ,,,, mashed potatoes , cole slaw , and chicken. The mashed potatoes were a bit ordinary , cole slaw was very good and the chicken was seasoned nicely. Over all not bad but , if your idea of spending $25 for lunch on Chicken & Tea then this might not be the place for you. Service was excellent and atmosphere was pleasant. Now would I go again ,,, Maybe.
Puggg007
Delish!. Everything was wonderful, the food, the drinks, and the service.

Can't see menu. I wanted to view the menu since I saw this place on tv but couldn't read it... very blurry. Would like to see a readable menu!

I've been twice and I only didn't like the salmon burger! The best mac cheese I've tried in a long time! Great ahi tuna! Good patio, little tight bar area but atmosphere very cool!

The Best Breakfast. I went there for the first time on Labor Day. Very friendly staff welcomed us. Really nice atmosphere. The menu was awesome. Some high-dollar items that are probably worth it (I will try them later) and some really cheap eats available.

My eggs, sour dough toast, bacon from heaven were all perfectly done. My short stack of pancakes were also very good. At this point, I was too full to have any more.

My friend ordered a chicken fried steak (beef tenderloin with jalapenos) with potato chip crust and gravy. She had an amazing side of potatos with grilled onions and peppers. I stole some of her food and it was amazing.

We will definitely be going back to try the brisket omelet. Whoever came up with that idea is a genius!

Down to earth elegance. Fine folks and fine food. What every neighborhood eatery should be.

Great, innovative, southern-inspired cuisine. Pricy for what it is. Clientele a little strange. I think the "liberty" in the name attracts all of the right wing nut jobs within a 10-mile radius.
Mike
Brunch. Amazing brunch menu. Make sure you set up a reservation because its very long wait. Chicken sliders are amazing and onion rings, also the ,mcmuffin breakfast burger is amazing,

Super yum! From OKC, so when I get the chance to have fresh seafood I take it. Liberty Kitchen doesn't disappoint. Word to the wise, call ahead and put your name on the wait list. We called on our way and were told an hour and a half wait. It took us 30 minutes to drive there and when we arrived, we ended up only having to wait about 10 minutes. I'm very impressed.

Overpriced average seafood. Don't waste your time and money.. Decided to try this place for the first time today. Walking in it looked nice, nothing to complain about the atmosphere. Some of the items on the menu were a bit overpriced, but nothing too serious. One of the specials was a fish and chips, which I ordered expecting it to be under $15 (this is basic pub fare). When the bill arrived, it was $28. I would understand if anything about the dish had been exceptional or even novel, but it was just average fish and chips. I could have gone to any pub and gotten exactly the same thing for less than half the price. I shudder to think what any of the other, more extravagant specials would have cost. It felt very much like a scam.

The service was fine, nothing to note. Our waitress was overly friendly, far too many "sugars" and "sweethearts" for my liking, it seemed like she was talking down to us. She was almost slimy-nice, but not very attentive.

If you're looking for seafood, go someplace else. This is really just an average seafood place with an overpriced menu.

I have eaten there several times. Great food, but bad seating and service. I guess if I am not gay, my wife and I can wait till all other same sex couple get attended and seated before my eyes. Then told that the owner has a friendship with them and I should just eat it up.
Anna Maria Latour
We brought a friend who had never been to "liberty". We were told that we would have a 20min wait. 45min later after most had been seated, a couple that clearly came in after our party was sat at a table for 4. We were shocked after the manager told us that the owner called ahead and had her seat them. We will not be going back due to that kind of treatment.

Terrible sign, Great food!. Mmmm good!

Wife and I went in the other day after driving by it a few times. I ordered the hash, she ordered a brunch plate.

The food was awesome! Probably one of the best hash dishes I've had, and her breakfast plate... platter was also very very good. The bacon syrup with the rolls was a freakishly good and unexpected twist.

We really enjoyed everything we had, the service was pretty good, and even with the heater being less than effective, we are looking forward to going back.

Finally Ate Here. I live in this area of the Heights and have considered eating at Liberty Kitchen for several months, but the parking lot is ALWAYS full. Today was a cold and rainy day and I decided it was a good off time to avoid the crowds and have a late lunch.

I had the gumbo with crab meat. I've tried to find a place in Houston that knows how to make an authentic gumbo. So far the closest I've found is Treebeards. Well...Liberty Kitchen got the roux just right. Nice, dark and smokey without tasting burnt. That's how it should be done. Unfortunately the crab was overcooked and the shrimp were just shrimp pieces and not whole shrimp. Otherwise. Not bad. Somebody in that place knows about gumbo

This place is a little too trendy for me. There is a general atmosphere of elitism. The snobbery sort of sucks the fun out the place. And in case you don't get that vibe at first glance, the higher than necessary prices will remind you.

I'll try them again. This time I know what to expect. I'll bring a friend and have a burger. Maybe if nothing else my friends will think I'm cool for eating there.
Glenda West Calloway
We will be back!. It was our first visit and we were extremely pleased. The menu is diverse and has some unique items. We both had breakfast items that had tons of great tasting food. The entire staff was very attentive.
Mark Miller
My wife and I had lunch there today for the first time. What a neat little place! The service was spot on and the food was excellent. We split a huge bowl of gumbo which was very well done and I had a fried shrimp sandwich. The sandwich was the best version I have ever eaten. My wife's fried catfish had the most amazing crust on it and the fish was perfectly cooked. Almost forgot about the fried oysters on top of the gumbo...tender and not too much batter...perfectly done! We rarely eat fried food but this was a wonderful splurge. Can't wait to try all their grilled items!
Cindy Merritt
Ordered fried chicken twice and it is wayyy over cooked!

Never Quite Lives Up to its promise. I have been to Liberty Kitchen 4 times over the past 2 years (it is very close to a friend's office). Each time the food seemed just ok to me. I have had some kind of donut special (brunch adventure I guess), pancakes, sliders, and most recently the gumbo. Nothing special good or bad with any of them. I have also had the custard based milkshakes, which are quite good, but don't let them convince you to have a "cake shake" where they blend a piece of cake in with the custard shake. I don't think that having bits of cake come up the straw while you are drinking adds anything to the experience. Last time I went they "ran out of custard" so even the shake was a dissapointment. They have a friendly atmosphere and plenty of TVs, so its probably a good place for a beer with friends - just don't expect too much from the food.
Phillip Miller
Friendly knowledgable staff is very attentive and the kitchen staff produces wonderful options sure to please anyone. The ambiance is fun without being overbearing.
Margaret Jones Riquelmy
HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT, DON'T BOTHER!. After calling and attempting to make a reservation, we were rudely turned away! They had assured me on the phone that 'seating a party of 5 at 6 o clock tonight will be no problem;' and specifically said that they didn't take resevations for parties under 6. . Not only was it a problem, the hostess chastised me for not having a resevation!!!! The manager was defensive and seemed confused and unclear as to whether they accepted resevations for 5 people or not. We felt unwelcome and will certainly never return. We ended the evening having a great meal with excellent service at Goode's Seafood Market. While it wasn't the dinner we had anticipated, it was great & the service was more than outstanding!
HoCoMu
After I finished, I told my husband that it was the best meal I've had in ages and that it was my new favorite place. Amazing.

Now I understand poor reviews after having been completely snubbed by young arrogant rude host. They just lost our business and our recommendation to others. What a bummer.

-----14 Jun, 2012-----

Love this place. So far, we've had divine raw gulf oysters twice & both times delicious. Also had, catch of day, buffalo burger, asparagus with bacon jam, gumbo, trout, & kids plates. All delicious & service has been great. Margarita perfect! Gumbo not real gumbo but delicious nonetheless. So glad to have such a delic grown up yet family friendly venue in the heights.
Lord Blanch
Nice venue, shame about the menu. A nice atmosphere with urban-modern styling is let down by a basic and unchallenging menu. All fish choices are prepared the same way (grilled with salt), there are 5 meat choices, 4 salads and that is it, unless you feel like eating a sandwich or burger for dinner.

I ended up with the Louie crab salad, which was ruined by the generaous crab being drowned in Thousand Island dressing. The rest of the plain ingrediants were dotted around the plate, all ungarnished and presented haphazardly.

This was my second trip there. The first visit I resorted to eating to starters as mains. The gumbo lacked punch and meat, the clams and sausage was equally as bland.

Either the head chef has unsuccessfully gone for some retro-back-to-basics style, or he is a student who really does not have any experience in cooking. No choice, no flavor, no presention, no inspiration.
Greg Smith
High priced mediocrity!. Gave this place a shot 3 times. Don't waste your time posting constructive criticism on FB page. Unless you just rave about this place they remove the posting.
1. Good burger but way over priced. Had to ask for waters 3 times, service staff is a bit "superior" than you are.
2. Confusing times for breakfast menu but If you want you can pay for the All Day breakfast for $16. It's like saying we don't want to serve you breakfast all day, but if you just have to have it you are going to have to pay out the nose for it. Was just okay but not worth the price and the complimentary "tude" from the wait staff.
3. Meatball sliders -Bar service. It seems like they think if you add arugula to everything it justifies charging more money for it. Bar service was better but not great.

Managers came to table which is nice. Nice patio. Host staff was pleasant.
I don't mind spending money on a good meal, but at the price and average service provided,it's not justified.

Maybe I will give it another shot in a few months when the arugula isn't on every plate and special ( I like arugula btw just not on everything) and they retrain their staff that they are there for the customer and not just the tip from the high priced menu.
JBK
Service is atrocious.
Chamboard
Mediocre at best. I got the Salmon. Not bad, a bit oily and drippy but, good. Mashed potatoes are okay, and the service is fine. Not great but, fine. My glass was never empty. Overpriced.
Kris
Love. I'm not sure whose writing these negative reviews but from my personal experience over at least 4 visits I've loved every minute at Liberty Kitchen. Most recently I had the trout and mashed potatoes and it was great. The portion was not too big, and not too small. The fish wasn't cooked beyond recognition like some places do and the potatoes reminded me of home. Their smoked salmon is also excellent. As for service, we sit at the bar so service has never been an issue and the staff are all pleasant, professional, entertaining individuals. It's my Houston favorite. Just as long as I get my seat at the bar!
Bklyn
Good po-boys, bad management. I arrived with a group of 13 on a Friday WITH reservations for 12. We asked the manager on duty to help us find another stool. Instead of offering to bring one for us as soon as soon as someone got up, he argued with us about having too many people and then both he and the waiter said we needed to "get the party started" so they could seat the next group coming in at 9. We spent about $700 her that night and doubt any of us will be back. LK, It's not professional to rush a big group because you booked parties too close together. Bad customer service trumps good food any day.

Sunday Breakfast 1st visit review. Nice walkin impression(lights/atmosphere/decor) Menu looked appetizing!! ordered breakfast, kitchen got slammed(quite normal for a premature forced opening)hostess not trained well in breaking the news to walkins...people pissed and leaving, one group came in for a bithday a lil(20 mins early w cake asked for candles!! PPL if u have a Bday bring ur own damn candles its not there fault) so they left before the rest of party arrived.Food tasted OK and was cold for a kitchen thats backed up it shouldve been steaming!!sausage was like a cold hockey puck(my guess is precooked) a bit overpriced but I will give them a 2nd chance for dinner once they knock out kitchen kinks...wait staff lacked training but were all polite and caring(stressed from kitchen)
Ryan
I had good service overall. Waiter was knowledgable and friendly. Nice beer and drink menu. Being a Gumbo cook from Louisiana I consider myself an expert. They def missed on this one. The soup was dark so I expected a robust roux flavor. It was actually slightly bland and lacking of salt and of strong gumbo flavor. Crab balls and raw oysters were all Good. My gir got the tuna minon and I got the brisket both which were good. Overall we enjoyed it and would return though it slightly over priced for what u get. The tuna was 25$ while the tuna a triniti a fine dining establishment is only 27$. Gumbo needs a revamp. Have eaten literally thousands of gumbos and never had fried things (oysters & okra) on top. Think the roux needs to be changed Or prepared differently. Def more seasoning.
Kate
Very good menu, with local brewed beer and foods. The Saturday platter (crab cake with cooked egg remoulade) was very good and the Dixie fried chicken sliders were absolutely amazing. Very cool atmosphere and friendly waitstaff. Fun brunch place.
Ed
Mixed reviews....some good, some bad. I ordered the fried chicken daily special on a Wednesday. The order was one half chicken in the house breading with a maple syrup sauce.

The chicken was dry and over cooked. The breading was more burned than not.

I advised the wait staff that the chicken was overcooked. The waitress didn't seem interested. I mentioned it again to a floor manager. He acted surprised and stated that it was the daily feature. He acted as though there was no way the food could be bad.

My wife ordered a fried shrimp poorboy which was good, if not overpriced.

The mac and cheese appetizer was good.

The bread pudding dessert was excellent.

all in all more austin than houston. I probably won't go back.
Melanie Cale Moore
Throwing a slab a meat on a bun and you'll be ok. But cooking a dish that requires a little attention is not their strong point. The gumbo was tasteless with waxy Uncle Ben rice. Terrible.
Jason
Can I get a server please?. Wow. First time going and not impressed. It took about 20 minutes to get a server to come over and take our drink order. When you order soup/gumbo etc, it should come out before your meal, not with your meal. The creamed corn was sweet corn in milk. After a $40 bill for my meal, i expected a lot more than what I got. Eh, live and learn.
Lisa Renee Morales
Just ok, will not go back. Went there Saturday night with girlfriends, who have been there before. It was my first visit and thought service was just okay, kind of slow and server forgot to mention specials, we had to remind him. Food was just so-so. I ordered the special thinking it was special but it wasn't. 7 oz. crabcake and french fries for $28 was kinda pricey. Will I go back? No. Barnaby's has better food for less than half the price!

Backed-up Kitchen at Brunch. We'd heard great things about the food and wanted to check it out. We finally came today for Sunday brunch arriving around 12:45pm. We were greeted and told there was a 15-20 minute wait for our party of 2, though looking around we saw a number of empty tables. We did get seated rather quickly and were promptly greeted for our drink order. I got a bloody mary, which was delicious. We ordered a dozen oysters to start with, and they came out in about 10 minutes. They were very tasty and creamy. We loved them! I then ordered the fried chicken sliders, and my boyfriend ordered the brisket cheddar omelette. We waited over 30 minutes after finishing the oysters before our meals arrived. When his omelette arrived, there was no cheddar on it, so we sent it back to the kitchen to have it added. While waiting, we shared my chicken sliders, which were average. (The cheddar was not melted, and the gravy was too mild.) After we'd finished my meal, his omelette had still not been returned to us, so we asked that our server simply cancel the omelette order and bring us the check. There were several remarks (including from the staff) about frustration with the kitchen being so backed up. Our server was very apologetic, which we appreciated, and he comped a number of items on our bill (which helped to lessen the frustration with the situation). IN SUMMARY: Outside of the tasty oysters... Food was average, service was slow, and kitchen has serious issues that need to be worked out!

For being such a new restaurant, they really need to get there act together if they want to make it. Live in West U area so called before going to make sure they were open, and was told by the hostess that yes, they were. Arrived at 1pm and was told by the hostess they were closed- that the kitchen was backed up by an hour and they closed at 2 but opened up again at 5 for dinner. Not only that, but their hours posted on the front door read OPEN 8am-10pm. Not happy and still hungry.

Great Addition to the Heights. I went to Liberty Kitchen for the third time last night. The restaurant has become my favorite place to eat in the Heights. The seafood is super fresh and prepared to perfection. Last night I had the best gumbo that I've ever eaten. LK serves gumbo with fresh seafood and tops the bowl with fried oysters and optional jumbo lump crab. I can't think of a better way to eat gumbo.

Rude with good food. Food was good but the people in the front house just sucked to high heaven. I paid with my debt/Visa and for some reason it failed to work for them. They were told I'd give them my check and a cash tip...and declined saying they don't accept checks and I said you have a business and you accept checks..you have a bank account..he told me to leave my license..and go get money..I said no..that is all I am offering you..then I was told I disrespected him by comming in with out cash or a card that worked..I told him it worked this morning and called him back and reported it worked at Fiesta...and I asked how come you spoke to me with this line about disrespect..and he got ugly and loud with me on the phone..so they...
NEED TO FIRE THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE

Good Lunch, but.... Had the gumbo & was tasty, but too watery, ie, the roux was thin and too salty. The fried okra & oysters on top was a nice touch...plus, there was very little crab meat in it but they were "willing to give you a bit more if you would pay an extra $4.50" >>>didn't like that ...

Raw oysters were good albeit very small & a bit overpriced for being at lunch & in-season + had to beg for red sauce & horseradish. I will wait a couple of months a go back to see if they have found out how to make a roux. The Karbach beer was a nice touch, but $7. ea @ lunch for draught beer was over the top.

YES!! Hawaiian Poke in The Heights!. The first time I went here for dinner was about 4 days after the grand opening. It was busy, no tables right away so I grabbed a stool at the bar. The staff was friendly. Sitting at the bar you get to see the kitchen staff and I observed lots of miscommunication of orders from waitstaff to cooks. They do not have a website. A website menu and hours of when food is served is needed. Their facebook page doesn't even mention any of this.

I was surprised to find Hawaiian poke on the menu. HAD to try it... and it was fresh and delicious! I also had the raw oysters (had to ask for them twice because waiter forgot). They were so-so.... not served as cold as I would have liked so they didn't taste well. Had to ask for crackers and horseradish. Why would anyone serve raw oysters WITHOUT crackers and horseradish?!

I went for breakfast once. If you get bacon for breakfast - ask them to please hold the maple! Too sweet.... I like to taste bacon. My son asked, "Mom, why did they put peanut butter on the bacon??" That's what it tasted like. I will stick to other more reasonably priced Heights places for breakfast.

Dinner again a few weeks ago. I had the tuna, served with a side of spinach and mashed potatoes. Everything was perfect. The spinach was super yummy and the bacon jam is the bomb! Also, had the smoked salmon. It hangs to cure on a board on the wall above one of the kitchen grills and is served with butter. It tasted perfect. I think I could go there just for poke, spinach and smoked salmon. I haven't tried the gumbo yet. Everything is too pricey.

SUMMARY: They need a website with menu and operation hours. Good location and the atmosphere is actually nice, in spite of the obvious chaos of the waitstaff and kitchen. Depending on who is in the kitchen, the food is excellent.... but service is slow and orders get messed up. Nice menu variety - but seriously overpriced. They need to get their act together with the waitstaff or customers will not return.

Seafood gumbo was very good. Had pieces of fried okra and fried oysters on top.

My husband and I finally made it to Liberty Kitchen and Oyster Bar....much to our surprise, we were very disappointed! We waited a good amount of time before we tired this place, letting the dust settle and the kinks that come with opening a restaurant, work themselves out. Positive things first, the service was good, food to table time was perfect and the atmosphere was eclectic but comfortable. Sadly, the cons out way the pros in this case. I ordered the potato and brisket hash; oddly no potatoes came on my plate. The veggies, eggs and arugula salad were drinched in grease. I am well aware that brisket is a very fatty cut of meat but my food should not be swimming in cow fat! The arugula and tomato salad was so salty, one bite was enough. As for my husband's meal, he ordered the catfish remoulade sandwich, not horrible but not at all memorable. I can say the fries were pretty tasty, but not worth an overlook of everything else on our plates. I end this review torn and bewildered, so many other items on the menu to choose from but I don't know if it's worth a second chance!

Nice Time. Live in the Heights and are enjoying all the new places to eat. Liberty Kitchen is a very nice addition. My wife and I love oysters and were excited to have an oyster bar close to us. We had the gulf and malpaque oysters 1.5 dozen to be exact. A little over priced but very good and fresh. We also had the charcoal oysters with a fried oyster on top, very good. The gumbo, well not that great, the roux was dark, and the andouille was good, but the overall flavor was not there. Also the seafood was sparse, had 5 tiny fried oysters and paid $4.50 for extra crab meat that was not worth it, it was only a few little pieces and once mixed into the gumbo it just disappeared. So basically $12.50 for 5 oysters and a few flakes of crab meat, rice and sausage. (NO SHRIMP IN GUMBO) Wife had the Tuna and it was awesome, one of the best we ever had. We also had the hot smoked salmon and it was incredible. We went with the craft beers that they serve and they were also good. Overall not bad for a new place, they were very busy but the service was good, they were trying really hard to take care of everyone. We will be going back for sure!!!

Great time. I had the opportunity to go to Liberty Kitchen a week after they opened and had a great time. It's a different and fun vibe, great for a group of friends and interesting drink menu. The menu is a little confusing at first, but once you get your head around how its all laid out it'll work out =)

I would like to point out that MARTY below seems to be an eleventh street cafe employee or related somehow. He has written a negative review for Liberty Kitchen and Revival Market (competitors?) but FOUR positive reviews for 11th street... all this on one day. Please disregard his review.

Your food was horrible :(. The Chronicle was right about BRC , now the new venture is following the sucky trend... Went Saturday Night and had the deviled egg oysters , it was over priced crap. Whats up with the Lights ?? Never eat there again, I agree with the
Houston Press blogger, worst new eatery...
Ketchup On Restaurants
The restaurant recently updated their menu and I suggest you go try it for yourself ASAP. The classics are still included, but new items like Red Velvet ‘Tacos’ in the morning and the Lobster Mac & Cheese at night will remind you all over again why this place is among the finest in our great city. You won’t be disappointed!

The Kitchen was humming and we could see the fire flying up the broiler as the staff prepared and plated meals with aplomb. I'd been to Liberty Kitchen during lunch, but never for Sunday Brunch. After our party had enjoyed our meal, we all agreed this would be a regular rotation when we do Sunday Brunch, a la Ted Mosby, as my son Jason would say.

One thing I can say about Chef Fegen is he knows how to mix-up some stuff that challenges our taste buds. Not sure what I'm talking about…

Placed in the center of this circle sits none other than a you-are-banned-so-don't-even-think-about-it sticker stating this is the status of Houston Chronicle's food critic, Alison Cook. Gasp. Owner-chef Lance Fegen's decision to ban Cook from Liberty Kitchen is taking ridiculous to an extreme. Her comments in a semi recent review of Fegen's other restaurant, BRC (Big Red Cock), clearly did not possess enough rainbows & sunshine for him to unwind. Relax guy. Just like Arturo's drama at Uptown Park, sometimes restaurant owners just need a hug. After a frightening experience at Liberty Kitchen this past weekend, Alison Cook should send this scary sticker ordering owner a box of chocolate attached to a thank you note for banning her. Torture began soon after passing the hostess stand in
