Review Cafe Miro - Honolulu

Amanda Vaelynn
My fiance and I love to try tasting menus, but this one was, by far, the best we've ever had. We took my father out for his 60th birthday to Miro Kaimuki and everyone was raving about the food the whole meal. The ambiance of the restaurant is stellar, the drinks were delicious/unique and the food itself was remarkable. We had the November tasting menu and the flavors were so well thought out and delicious. We did not leave hungry. Miro Kaimuki is one of the best restaurants in Oahu. This was more than just good food though, it was a whole culinary experience. The way the chef prepared flavors, the plates/design of the meal, and how everything was presented- everyone at the table agreed, it was the best meal we've ever had.

This is the best restaurant you can have in Hawaii! The trio brioche is a must try, the caviar, tuna, and uni are amazing, all very tasty! The five course tasting menu is great, definitely is another must try! Oysters are from northwest of Pacific Ocean, creamy, and fresh! However, the escargot is alright, not recommend to try.

We got to experience the new “October” menu with Ryan, our server and a team of his peers, who contributed to a fun and enjoyable dining experience. The cocktails are unusual and inventive (true to others’ citations about this being an innovative food restaurant). The colors and flavors and textures of the various courses brought surprise + delight for the diner (me). Mahalo for a memorable evening. Note: there were a number of “supplements” offered in addition to the prix fixe menu and we didn’t partake of anything other than a wine pairing. I left completely happy and satisfied with the quantity and quality of the food provided.

Amazing and inventive food. Had the premium wine tasting and each wine paired very nicely with the food. However when it comes to atmosphere it was very hard to hear people sitting right across from me, and all the decor seemed cheap. Service was great each person was kind and bubbly, however they kept on changing who took our order and presented the food which was weird.

****DISNEYLAND FOR YOUR TASTEBUDS**** As person who loves his food deep fried and slathered in sauce, Miro is nothing like that, so I was out of my element. This was by far the best dinner experience I have ever had. Realizing how ignorant it is to think "snails?? I will never!", all menus will be viewed differently, with an open mind. What I had: Seasonal Prix Fixe (October) with wine pairing Escargot Sourdough bread with butter and zatar Uni Toast Ahi Toast The food is absolutely immaculate. With each bite you can feel the flavors accentuate each other not overpowering but blending well. The service was excellent. Even with allergy restrictions the menu was adjusted to our comfort. Each server knew the menu with confidence, as if they were the ones cooking your meal. Every server was professional and friendly, explaining each entrée as they placed it in front of me, foreshadowing the experience to come. Honorable mentions are Taylor and Martin. They definitely made this experience memorable and exciting, leaving me wanting more. TIP: ALWAYS go for the wine pairing. I did not have the premium wine pairing, but I will when I return. Of course, do so responsibly. THE NEGATIVES: Unfortunately, this experience had to come to an end. Best dinner I have ever had, yet. I look forward to my next experience.

Miro offers a seasonal, French inspired coursed prix-fixe menu with vegetarian and pescatarian options. The menu changes by the month and for the season. Coming into fall the menu was very luxurious. $92 with an optional $48 or $90 wine pairings. They also have some optional bar snacks such as gourmet toasts and oysters. We started with cocktails and mock tails from their extensive drink menu (also seasonal and crafted by Michael their mixologist and server). The rhubarb cocktail was torched on top to add almost a meringue topping and the young buck was like a spiced version of a virgin Moscow mule. The cocktails seem to be on the sweeter side, but they are very delicious and a great complement to the savory meal. It is also super fun and recommended to try to get a seat at the bar and watch them make beautiful drinks all night! Now into the food, we started with the Kumamoto oysters ($4 each) with the mignonette of flavors of papaya salad. The mignonette did not overpower the soft Kumamoto oysters, and they were clean and prepare perfectly. It was a great start to the meal! Next the seared ahi on brioche toast ($17). The brioche was buttery and delicious, but this year coffee on top and a pop of some sort of citrus sauce in the middle to balance out the creamy fish and buttery bread. This is a must try! The first course of the tasting menu was a little local lettuce with persimmon , hazelnut purée and tarragon oil. Let us was fresh and crisp with dice persimmons and small croutons on top, which could be dipped in the luscious hazelnut purée with the super flavorful tarragon oil. This dish take salad starter to another level! Next was the spinach flavored agnolotti pasta filled with sweet potato that had butternut squash, pine nuts and pickled matsutake mushrooms as accents along with a satisfying portion of chopped pancetta, high quality olive oil and what tasted like a balsamic agridolce. This dish was sweet and sour and umami, and really captured the beautiful fall colors with the green pasta and the beautifully cut leaf shaped butternut squash. The filling for the pasta was delicious and smooth and the pickled mushrooms, gave a bright burst of flavor to clean your palate in between bites. We were all lapping up the last bit of the sauce on our plate. Next, we ordered the off menu risotto special with rare white truffles ($100). I don’t typically eat a lot of truffles or $100 rice dishes, but we were going all out so I had to do it. The truffle flavor came through very strong and the truffles shaved on top were very beautiful and quite a treat to enjoy. I thought it was a bit small because it was just delicious and I would’ve liked a bit more! I guess at $3,600 a K for truffles it’s not a bad deal! What a treat! Next was the blackcod that has a crispy skin and was served in a reduction of the fish and shoyu. The skin was super crispy, and the fish was extremely flaky and delicate with a lot of cod flavor as the broth was intense. The balls of braised potato, pickled radish and Watercrest leaves were a nice finish this rich dish. Finally, we had the washugyu flank steak served with a parsnip purée, a black peppercorn sauce, and a sweet reduction with burdock root and pear. The sauces on this dish were delicious! The purée of parsnip with beef fat was luxurious and smooth, the peppercorn sauce featured whole peppercorns that were extremely flavorful and satisfying, as well as balanced with a sweet, sticky reduction. The beef was cooked perfectly, although it was not as fat or tender as I was hoping. Also was super stuffed by this point in the meal! The burdock and pear were delicious bites to drag through the different sauces. The bread was also very helpful at all of these courses to ensure we got every last drop of all their delicious sauces. We finished with the desert that was on the menu, which is a local ulu cake with hints of lemon, caramel and coconut. Even more delicious was a special birthday dessert of local kululo that we got. This reminded me of a dense churro and was super satisfying!

Miro was excellent! They were able to modify the pre fix for vegetarian also. The escargot were delicious and the bread was fantastic! Deserving of at least one Michelin star right now.

Prix fixe menu with add ons. I recommend sitting at the bar and let Michael take you on a magical cocktail journey. He made me one off the top of his head based on my flavor profile asking me a few questions. It had tequila, mezcal, a few citrus and some rhubarb something that was delicious. Food is amazing too. Nice place for a special occasion.

This is the top fine dining restaurant on the island after the fall of vintage cave. The tasting menu here is unbelievable, absolutely worthy of Michelin stars. Highly recommend the “snacks” in additional to the tasting menu. This restaurant is light years ahead of other fine dining restaurants in Hawaii. If you are a Michelin star foodie, look no further, this is the best of the best in Hawaii.

Very good food with some up and down in the tasting menu. Great service, very small portions for the price.

Delicious food -- Good Ssrvice -- Great value for the money. Three or four course fixed price menu options..... may simply order a la carte if preferred. Satisfactory wine list, beers and mixed drinks. Several options are offered within each category - appetizers, entrees, dessert or cheese plate. Very pleasant and helpful staff.

Very Nice!. I have read the reviews submitted to urbanspoon, and it doesn't jive with my dining experience there twice, the last being in late October of this year. The service was good, with great attention to our needs (we had a party of 12 which in Honolulu seems to be overwhelming for most restaurants), The portions were a surprise really, most of us were expecting portions fit more for a size 0 rather than a husky waist 38! Atlantic salmon is de rigeur for most restaurants, but our happened to be King from New Zealand. Further there isn't anything particularly wrong with Atlantic salmon, if it is prepared with care.<br/>I want to make a comparison: a few weeks before we dined at Le Bistro which consistently gets high ratings, and I am wondering about that...look at my Le Bistro review for comparison. For the fixed menus, I would give Cafe Miro a try, especially if you want something a little above the ordinary, but don't want to be left paying your mortgage a couple of days late.

Not my favorite. We had a 7 course meal complete with wine for about $100 per person. Japanese fusion. Why? Japanese food is great, why fuse it with something else? Plus everyone seems to be doing it. Most of the courses were okay. One course had salmon which in Hawaii is always really crappy Atlantic salmon, but no one here seems to care. The oysters were cooked, which makes them stink and some quite fishy roe on top. The opakapaka was very good and the dessert really impressed. I can't say I didn't like it, but I don't plan on coming back. They only filled about 6 tables that Friday night so this place may not be here for much longer.

Apparently they don't know their own hours. Called to see if they were open for service were told yes. When we got there we were told they weren't open. Total waste of time.
