Review Hopcat - Grand Rapids

Austin Meyer
HopCat is a staple in Downtown Grand Rapids. The service and food are top notch, but your not paying out of the nose for it. It's a great place to sit and have some beers before a hockey game or concert, or for that late night snack. It may be busy at times but it's worth the wait.

This place is so fun! We sat in a booth that was huge and roomy. Very comfortable. We liked the decor and the layout of the restaurant. There was a lot to admire during our meal. We each had the strawberry basil and jalapeño mango margaritas and enjoyed them. I ordered the OG fries and roasted red pepper soup. Both were tasty. My companion ordered the vegan tacos and said they were good.

Came in tonight with my family and the server Danielle was extraordinary. Incredibly personable, and attentive. Had the Nashville chicken sandwich and added a side of mac (she said I could substitute for the fries, but if you know you know, the fries are crazy good), and everything came out perfect. Everyone else said their food was amazing and we had the gingerbread cheese cake trifle dessert. SO GOOD! Don't miss out!

An excellent place for pub style food. This time we got the wings and cosmic (crack) fries. I can speak highly of the burgers, fish and chips, and mac n cheese from past experiences. For those that enjoy craft beer there is a large selection of craft beers, ciders, and meads on draft. The service was surprisingly slow for the low level of customers sitting inside. Our lunch visit was over an hour while similar lunches elsewhere are under an hour. Great if you have time for a leisurely meal not for a quick in and out bite.

Was busy before the concert. Many people waiting for table saying a 45 min wait. We waited maybe 15 min. Atmosphere was warm and friendly. Food and drinks came quickly.. They were on the ball getting us in and out ontime. Fries were great! Needed 2 hands for the burger. It tasted as good as it looked..maybe could have used more sauce. I would recommend this place...

Had dinner with some friends here and had a great meal. The burgers were good…but the fries were GREAT. Can’t recommend those comic fries enough. Definitely suggest getting extra to share!

I wish I could rate higher!!! This was probably the best dining experience i’ve had anywhere in Grand Rapids. Despite it being quite a busy Saturday night, we were seated almost immediately, and our server was there in less than two minutes for a drink order. On that note, I can’t speak highly enough of our waitress, Lexi. Even with the restaurant as busy as it was, she was so attentive and took a genuine interest in my wife and I. We mentioned that we were coming from out of town and had never been to HopCat, and she suggested the Cowboy burger. I got that and thoroughly enjoyed it. Cooked to perfection and assembled with care. My wife had the Bbq chicken salad and loved it as well, everything was fresh and it came with plenty of toppings. The chats we had with Lexi were some of the most genuinely enjoyable talks I’ve had with someone I had just met. I’ll be recommending this place along with Lexi to anyone considering dining in downtown gr.

Solid bar, I prefer the OG downtown Grand Rapids location, it has a bit more character and charm. I usually belly up to the bar but there’s also a nice little patio (seasonal). This time I had the supper club wrap, tasty as always. Btw if you join their rewards club they send you a reward for a free entree each year.

The food was so good!! I had the Brisket Tacos & was happily surprised with the taste, texture, and how the aromatic top notes... Kidding. But it really was delicious. Crispy, but soft. The service was exceptional. Not only was our server perfect, but another server delivered an appetizer to the wrong table. Ours. That was pretty tasty too.

Food was wonderful. Hayley was our server. And she never let our drinks run out. Had great knowledge about the menu. Fabulous experience overall. Definitely will return.

We had such a great experience at HopCat! The food was good but our server Danielle was what made our dining experience! She was friendly, helpful and just the sweetheart! Thanks HopCat for having amazing staff!

Came in yesterday evening and had a great experience! Our server Hayley was exceptional! She made sure we had everything we needed. Very polite and professional! We will definitely be back!!!

The cosmic fries where good but they need to go easy on the jalapeños. The service was good even if they were busy.

We came on a Wednesday evening and it wasn't overly busy so seated right away. Our waiter Miggy was great, I'm always impressed when waiters don't need to write down orders! He memorized our order and got it right👍🏻 Ordered the patty Thorne burger and the madtown grilled cheese. Both very good but my husband likes his burgers rare and with smash patties they are always cooked through, so he said it was ok. There was a little misunderstanding about the GF bread, I thought from Miggy's answer that they had GF buns AND bread for the grilled cheeses but I got my grilled cheese on a GF bun. Still was good but not what I expected. I've heard so much about the fries that I was expecting something extra about them, and while they were very good we couldn't say they were phenomenal, however we were told later by a friend that the best way to have them is loaded so I will definitely try them that way next time!👍🏻 Overall a good experience and I would love to come back to try other menu items!

Stopped by for dinner on a Thursday before the Jeff Dunham show. Convenient location right next to Van Andel and local parking garage. They were busy, but our party of 5 still got seated quickly. The server was friendly and gave us his favorites as recommendations, which we appreciated. The appetizers were delicious- the Pretzel Nuggz were the average pretzel balls and cheese one would get at any good restaurant. The winners were good. The BBQ Brisket Fries were good, The fries themselves were very good- perfectly seasoned and crisp. But there wasn't much brisket on it to justify double the cost. I would suggest just going with the loaded fries because of this. My husband had the Bloody Mary and liked it is enough to get a second. Two of our party had the Tropical Blue Rum drink and it be was good. Not overly sweet or heavy on the coconut. Everyone loved their entree. 3 of our party got different burgers and they were flavorful, not greasy, big & filling. I think the best one was the Cowboy Dbl Smash Burger, but my blu cheese loving husband loved Stella Blue Dbl Smash Burger. Another had Killer Mac 'N Cheese- creamy with just the right amount of cheese. I had the Risk It For The Brisket and it was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend it- one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had.

5 star review This is by far one of the greatest restaurants I have ever been to in all my 27 years of life. My husband and I visited this place last week, and I just can’t stop thinking about it! My husband, who is a vegetarian, ordered the “Madtown Grilled Cheese”, and he says it’s better than his mother’s own recipe. I, on the other hand, ordered the “Killer Macaroni and Cheese”, and let me tell you, it’s even better than that box-made stuff. With perfectly-crafted cheese sauce and just the right amount of breadcrumbs, this mac and cheese is sure to knock the socks right off your feet. I was genuinely dreading that last bite. And don’t even get me started on the Crême Brûlée Cheesecake!! This brought a whole new meaning to the word “cheesecake” for me. I thought brownies were my favorite dessert until I tried this with my husband. All of the flavors, strawberry, caramel, and cheesecake were SUCH a good combo. Not only was the food fantastic, but the atmosphere and the service definitely made this experience even more spectacular. As soon as you walk in, you just know you’re going to leave as though you had just visited grandma’s house: with a full stomach and a smile on your face! The service was the greatest I’ve had in years, to be quite honest. My waitress Danielle was EXCELLENT!! Nicest lady I’ve ever met! She made sure that everything was perfect and definitely made us feel welcomed. I can’t stop thinking about this place! Definitely going back soon. If you’re looking for a great place to enjoy yourself and eat some great food, I DEFFO recommend this place!!

The bartender Liz is awesome! She is very attentive and always gives great service. One of the best bartenders in the area in my opinion. Also, there aren't many vegan options, but they do have vegan tacos and and a vegan burger. The vegan burger is amazing along with the cosmic fries. Great beer selection as well. This is definitely a place worth checking out.

Hop Cat has an outsourcing reputation across Michigan for their wide variety of craft beers on tap and delicious menu items. Needless to say, the Grand Rapids location is easily the best of them all. Pros: - A vibrant atmosphere - Outstanding Mac and Cheese - The crack fries lived up to every bit of the hype - Prompt service - An impressive selection was of craft beers on tap Con: - We were carded at the door and inside, so this seemed a little obsessive Overall, Hop Cat Grand Rapids is easily one of the best eateries in town.

The food is always great, but the service is hit or miss. We were there last night before a concert, and we got right in. The place was busy but by no means packed. Our waitress brought us the wrong beer, didn’t bring us the side order of crack fries we ordered until we asked for it a second time after all our other food had been consumed (we’d have asked for it again earlier, but our waitress was too busy talking to other staff members and never came by our table while we ate to make sure we had everything or to ask how our food was). It was disappointing service. There are too many other places to eat out downtown to waste a night out somewhere with poor service.

Best place to go if you are looking for a late night snack and drink! Nowhere in Grand Rapids keeps their kitchen open past midnight but HopCat does! Amazing ciders and food. Also amazing bar staff! 10/10 would recommend and it’s now my new favorite spot.

Always busy for a reason. I’ll never forget hopcat in its infancy and the owner meeting with us, sharing a beer, and just being super cool. The staff was on top of everything during this abnormally busy weekend and they stayed on point. Polite, patient, and very helpful. I’m not surprised hopcat has branched out and expanded. I just hope the other locations are as awesome.

Usually great, but last night’s service was poor. Server got my wife’s beer order wrong, and our side of crack fries didn’t come out until after we’d finished our meals. The server would have known this if she’d stopped by the table to see how our meal was, but she spent more time by the cash register talking with other employees. We’ll come back, but hope the service is better.

First time at Hopcat and loved it! Great atmosphere and a diverse mix of clients ( young , old, families with young children , hipsters ). Very fast and friendly staff. Great variety of beers and the Madtown Grilled cheese with crack fries and apple / tomato soup with blue cheese crumbles was one of the best brewery meals in Grandrapids ( at only cost $11.00). This spot is a must try for everyone .

Always the best music soundtrack every time we’ve been here. As well as a great beer selection and good food.

The food, beer, and staff were all phenomenal!!! We ate here both days while we were in town. My daughter and I ordered a burger and the crack fries come with it. I can see why they got their name “CRACK” Fries.... They are so addicting!!!! My husband had a burger and also tried the Mac and cheese with chicken, spinach, and chorizo. He said they were both fantastic! The cheese curds were delicious too!! If you have not stopped in here, it’s a definite, MUST!! Thanks HOPCAT for your exceptional food, beer, and service!!

Food was excellent great burgers fantastic fries. Beer menu was vast. Waitress was awesome the only thing keeping this from 5 stars was the beer was a little on the warm side.

The staff is knowledgeable about drinks and food they serve. Nice environment to meet friends and socialize over a few drinks. Prices are reasonable.

Went there for the first time Friday night with a friend for dinner before a concert. Had to wait 45 minutes for a table but it was well worth it. Has one if the beers from their amazing list while waiting. The burger I had was done just right and the crack fries were fantastic. I would definitely go again.

Great food, great staff. The fries are amazing and the Mac and Cheese are excellent.

Beautiful place, great food and brews and friendly staff!

The menu offers great vegetarian options. Even though the line was long the wait was short. Easy walk to Van Andel
