Review The Old Goat - Grand Rapids

ELIZABETH ARRAUT
Some of the best service I've received in a long time! Michael guided us through the menu, helped make selections & offered suggestions on wine pairings. He was everything an excellent server should be. Food was delicious & live music was even better! Keep up the good work!

The Old Goat is off the beaten path (meaning not downtown 😉), yet very easily accessible and quaint. They have plenty of offstreet parking behind the building. The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating. I loved the Live Entertainment, which consisted of musicians playing an upright bass, piano and electric guitar. I enjoyed a very flavorful delicious meal consisting of their 10 oz. grilled sirloin (cooked medium rare), charred asparagus, smashed yukons, roasted mushroom and balsamic caramelized onion with thyme bordelaise. The steak was cooked to juicy and tender perfection. The yukons were both crispy and fluffy in texture. The vegetables get my chef's kiss. I also enjoyed the shared appetizers (oops...not pictured) of the Deviled Eggs (the flavor of the week was Caprese) and Pretzel Panther.

I was disappointed just because I had high expectations for this place after reading other reviews. We got the deviled eggs with three eggs for $10 the cauliflower appetizer and brussel sprouts appetizer. They were ok but nothing special. I got the rueben after seeing it raved about on someone else's review. It was probably the worst Ruben I've ever sadly. There was hardly any meat on it (but it was bunched up to look nice for presentation. it was essentially a bread sandwich and was incredibly salty. And also it was $19 with a handful of chips. The atmosphere was amazing however cool music and vibe and great decor.

I came to Michigan for the first time ever. My friend highly recommended this restaurant to me, and i am an ohio resident. I came to this restaurant and to my surprise the establishment is wonderful. It has beautiful music and wonderful good food. The service here is very professional and peaceful. I had a wonderful gentleman. His name was JT. He serviced me and my friend, and he recommended the feature. we tried out the feature, and it was Devine. I give this place a perfect five stars and will definitely return back here to eat again. The experience was wonderful 😁🙂😊 the service was really fast and the food was very delicious the menu was really cool also and wasn't too hard to choose from.

Fantastic!! Possibly the best Rueben Sandwich I've ever had... and I am a bit of a Rueben aficionado. Cool atmosphere and great service.

Nice little place with cool and quirky decor! Good menu selection including a good beer menu. ADA friendly! Pepperoni pizza was really good, definitely enough to fill you up! The soup salad and sandwich combo option is really nice for the picky eater.

Service was fast and prompt, food was amazing. When we were walking in and seen how they were cooking the pizzas we knew it was going to be next level and that it was. Some of the best pizza we have ever had. Edit: we went back for the bluegrass live band and BBQ food. The brisket was moist and actually pretty good. The garlic Mac and cheese is the side to get when you go. The apple fennel slaw is not for everyone but I enjoyed it. Now the lemon lavender crÚme brûlée was amazing

Good place, great beer (it’s Grand Rapids). The pizza is good and sandwiches are amazing. The Jambalaya was interesting, not bad but definitely not a jambalaya, a menu name change would make the dish amazing
if it that makes any sense :)

Chefs kiss to Old Goat - it’s so good! Old goat offers traditional comfort food with unique twists. The atmosphere is so inviting, cozy, and eclectic. Our service was also great. Usually they have a live piano player which really adds to the vibes. Pictured the bubbly brown cheese app, sweet treat salad and charley apple chicken sandwich - all fantastic. Update: I went back and it was still great except for the salad. Everyone got the sweet treat salads since they were so good last time, but unfortunately they didn’t come with any candied cashews and the topics were slim pickings. Not sure id try to get that again. Otherwise everything was great.

This place has great atmosphere, plus we loved listening to the jazz band during our visit (Sunday afternoon). There was about a 45min wait for the table. The food was really fantastic and the wait staff was super accomplished of my diabetic grandmother that needed to eat ASAP after being seated. However, only 4 stars because the service was really slow and they seemed understaffed. Also, really appreciated the baby changing table in both the women’s and men’s room.

So, this place is phenomenal. The place is well done with plenty of awesome touches. The service? Excellent. TY Emily F. The food? We didn't have the pretzel, the bread or the goat cheese appetizers, but they looked really good. Like, really good. The pizza was excellent. I had the Rhett Butler sans mustard. What an unfortunate condiment. Regardless, what a great sandwich.

We loved the outdoor eating area! It was a beautiful evening and lovely atmosphere! Our server was great and asked us if we wanted fresh squeezed lemonade - DO IT! It tasted exactly like what you would get at a fair. Yum! I got the brisket sandwich and could only eat half. Unfortunately, I (again) forgot to grab the to-go box when I left. My Dad got a burger and although he is very hard to please, he said it was perfect! He was even talking about it the next day and said he wished he could go back and purchase just their raw meat to cook instead of buying from the grocery store! Two thumbs up!!

Had lunch outdoors with my daughters here at the Old Goat, and we all loved our entrees. Creative touches on classic dishes. Service was a little slow but worth the wait. It was great to see this new restaurant as part of the revitalization of this neighborhood business district where I grew up 50+ years ago.

First time eating here. So many great sounding dishes, but after seeing the pizza oven, HAD to be pizza! Pepperoni De Olivio... OUTSTANDING!! Bravo to the pizza cook this afternoon! Service was joyful and spot on without smothering. No question...I WILL return for more! Great place!!

This was my second visit to The Old Goat. We came on Sunday with a group of five (and a high chair) for brunch. We were told it would be about a 45-minute wait, but only waited about 15 minutes for a table, which was nice. We expected a wait, and considered the food well worth it. The service was excellent, and she did a great job managing all the tables upstairs as well as handling the long wait for food, which was a little over an hour after we sat down. $5 bloody marys were decent, unable to be "extra spicy" as requested, but good for the price. $3 for coffee = SO WORTH IT! It is rich, delicious, and excellent! $3 upcharge for fries? Definitely NOT worth it. I didn't order them personally, but the tiny crispy things my companions got were lame. I assume it was due to the long wait for food, but if you're charging $3 extra for fries, they should be pretty darn good. Both agreed they were not worth the extra charge. I ordered the whisky brisket biscuit. I had expected more of a sandwich, but I guess I should have known it was more like biscuits and gravy. The biscuit was MASSIVE, and pretty much out-shined the gravy, which was thick and mildly sweet. The brisket was hard to find in the mix, and the one piece I did find was only ok. Of the two fried eggs, one was over cooked, one was perfect. The ratio of biscuit to gravy and eggs was way off; it is SO massive. It lasted two meals worth of leftovers, but I needed to make my own eggs and sauce to accompany it. The hot sauce I ordered to spice things up a bit was a personal portion and quite good. Wished it had been around for the bloodies! I was able to try two of the sandwiches, the spicy chicken and the grilled cheese. Both were really great, and although I didn't get to taste it personally their take on French toast looked awesome and was supposedly delicious. 😋 Overall, we had a very nice experience and if we went at a less busy time, I think we would have given the food 5-stars. Will be back.

Interior design is 5/5, very unique. I particularly like the repurposing of the steel drums into spot lights. Love the wall paper and mirror combo, romantic. I can tell the food is supposed to be very good, from presentation to portioning, it’s meant to be very good. But it wasn’t quite so, and I blame it on short staffing and perhaps even shortages in ingredients. The fries were stale, I know it’s been pre cooked by batches for quick service. The meat from the sandwich were a bit dry, although the sauce did compensate for the flavor. The pizza was quite alright, would like the sauce to be more rich. Overall everything was enjoyable and the service was very good and friendly, the food is just a tiny bit off.

The atmosphere was warm and chill. It wasn’t loud at all, only someone playing the piano and light chatter. Our server was friendly and attentive as well! Food was so good that we finished our meals before we remembered to take a photo. Would recommend stopping here for some good eats!

Very eclectic atmosphere, superb service, and amazing food & drinks. I enjoyed the Benedict Arnold and a Cosmic Berry Cosmo. Their cheddar grits are fantastic, as well. Can’t wait to go back for lunch or dinner. I definitely recommend this place. My only “complaint” would be that the jazz band was a little loud, but the music was amazing.

Ambiance is great, wait staff super friendly, Bloody Mary is possibly the best in town, but the menu changes way too often. Favorite dishes disappear all the time. Food is so-so. It’s almost like they are trying too hard to be trendy and can’t find their solid voice. I keep going back hoping they find it and set a menu.

After telling our server Liam that my 6 year old has celiac disease he assured us that it was fine. Well after eating her dinner we asked the manager about the bread that was served and come to find out that it wasn’t gluten free.. Now we will have to deal with this for the next month!!! Education with your staff is key when selling gluten free items.. We will not be returning!!!

Had my first Old Goat meal yesterday and it was super delicious! My only complaint was my stomach wasn't big enough to try more food! Fun ambiance, nice staff and great food. We will be back!

This place was recommended by a the hotel staff I was staying at. And OMG it was amazing!!! The staff was so great definitely couldn't of been any better! And the food let's just say I live 2.5 hours away and will make the drive frequently to eat here! I can't wait for my next time already! Way to go workers you definitely nailed it in everyway!!!!!

I have been there twice for dinner and had brunch there today! Never had a bad meal or bad service! Great interesting food options! Highly recommend!

Three things are true for a restaurant to become a favorite for me: 1. I can relax, I am unhurried, I can be myself. 2. Wonderful staff 3. Great food and drink The Old Goat has these in great measure.

My bester and I were there yesterday after some shopping. OUTFREAKINGSTANDING!!! The atmosphere was divine, the open soup bar was amazing to see and the food was remarkable!! So full of flavor and the freshest ingredients!! We shared the Monfei something or other I can’t pronounce, but it was to die for!! We also split the Perogies.. YUMMMMMO!!! I can’t remember the name of the appetizer, but it was Goat something with crispy bread and we felt like pigs we snarfed it down so fast and hard 😂 Try the Southern Peach Moscow mule while you’re at it!! I can’t wait to come back with my hubbakins!!!!!!

Always have a great time and tasty food. Love the change in menu to reflect the season. Keeps it fresh.

Love this place. I've been multiple times with plans to go many more. Great menu, fun food, generally well executed ideas. Cocktails are also above average! Atmosphere is fun and the effort that goes into the live music really shows. My one complaint is that service is very inconsistent. Sometimes it's great, many times it's less than stellar. Just be prepared to wait as beers, plates, and even the check will take longer than you might expect. That said - it's still absolutely worth multiple visits for a great (yet relaxed) experience.

Stopped in for Sunday brunch for the first time. Live Jazz, fabulous food and great service. Will definately be going back!

Great variety in the menu - everything we had at our table was delicious. Hot pimento cheese dip (so yum), wedge salad with just a little "sumpinsumpin", wonderful jambalaya, perch sandwich (nothing like you've ever had), and a turkey sandwich with actual turkey. And get the s'more dessert. Can't miss.

Visited with my husband for the first time this past weekend. The hot goat appetizer was to die for and both our entrees were awesome. We can't wait to come back!

The cooks kept messing up our order, then tried to charge us for stuff we didn't even order, granted it was busy, but to continuously mess up orders is a little ridiculous. I will never eat there again. And plus the food wasn't the best. Definitely overrated.

Great food, great atmosphere, great service. We ordered all you can eat soup and worked our way down the menu.
Cindy Lou
Excellent food, great atmosphere. Not your chain restaurant food. Lots of different non typical food items on the menu. Went with 7 ladies and everyone loved their food. Great service!

Great service on German night. They understood our needs with toddler to order fast, receive food fast, and get the check quickly. Thank you for making a great night at Old Goat!
