Review Bobby's Downtown - Fairbanks

Marshall Horsman
What an awesome experience! Our waiter, Gordon, was super helpful and patient while we navigated food allergies at the table. Anything he didn't know he was quick to find an answer for. Bobby even popped into the kitchen and ensured everything was safe for us! Great food. Great service. We will be back for sure!

Best experience so far in Fairbanks! We had never been here and got lucky to have Brian as our Amazing server!!! He spaced out our appetizer, salads, entree's and desserts perfectly! We started with the stuffed grape leaves, Yum! I had the special, Steak Oscar and my husband had the Moussaka, both were spot on! I forgot to take pictures of the wonderful salads... Seasoning on the steak was by far the best I've ever had! I substituted rice for the garlic mashed potatoes, All was perfect. We were in there exactly two hours however it didn't feel like it. Not rushed, great atmosphere, amazing food and Thank You Brian for the Best Service 🙏 You made our date night Perfect 💝

We waited hours for our food. The soup was flavorful. My dinner was salty and somewhat disgusting, ordering stuffed grape leaves, I didn't eat halve of it. They were swimming in some really salty gravy. No one at my table enjoyed the food. Luckily my bill was under $40 others spent near $100 and we were all severely disappointed. Do not eat here. Save your money unless you think cooked carrots are worth forty bucks. I thought about sending my food back every bite and the rest of my party felt the same way. Maybe the google reviews for this place are influenced by friends and family? Again did not even eat half though we were extremely hungry due to the wait. Fairbanks has plenty of delightful places to eat, skip Bobby's.

Went here in the middle of winter. Had a prime rib that was cooked perfectly. I took my kids and they crushed their meal also. The service was great and the staff were very helpful. Pro tip: check out the copper pipe on the bar, it's magical.

This place is fantastic! We came with our little ones hoping to have a little family time together and had the best experience. The service was wonderful and the food was even better. Everything tasted homemade, even the ketchup! I will definitely be coming back for their Baklava (not sure if I spelled that right) and the rack of lamb.

My meal was the worst Greek food I have ever had. I hate to write this because the staff where so nice. But my Saganaki came out burnt, after dinner browsing of the reviews was that this is how they always serve it. I was able to scrape the burnt off the middle and eat that, but the edges where burnt solid. The middle was only burnt in the outer layer. Saganaki should be golden brown with edges like a crispy grilled cheese, Then my beef souvlaki was so incredibly salty Maybe other dishes are delicious there, but these two signature Greek dishes are not.

Food was amazing. I had a gyro and my girlfriend had stuffed zucchini. Server Violet was nasty and we hardly saw her. Which was probably a good thing.

Always wanted to try this place since I arrived in town. Everyone talks about their food, so you know your boy needed to get some. Was super excited to get some Greek food and a gyro plate. Welp the tzatziki is really good, the gyro while flavorful, wasn't cut from a spitz and you could taste it was dry and reheated on a grill which made me sad. The potatoes, carrots and rice were pretty good. I was just looking forward to spitz cut lamb mix. **update*** I stand corrected. Thank you for educating me on a Greek gyro. I’ve had shawarma and gyros in a bunch of countries and get them confused periodically. Would be a four star rating, but... the restaurant had almost no body in it and me and the people in front of me waited almost 10 minutes to be seated and we were the only people waiting. Then it took a good ten minutes to take my order and another 30ish to bring me my entree, which I get at a busy place; however they weren't busy at all. Everything was gorgeous inside though. I'd give them a second try.

I have travelled the world and can say that the raw oysters and the calamari are the freshest I've had in decades (in Fairbanks?!?). The entrees are appropriately priced and created fresh from scratch. The chocolate mousse is mouth-gazmic. And the staff. Where do I start. Attentive, polite, appreciative, on the spot, interactive and genuine. Definitely a fine dining establishment with old family values. I am beyond happy to have my former prepcook from Lunch Cafe in your ranks!

Bobby's is one of my favorite places to eat. The staff is super attentive and nice. The owners are so sweet and approachable. The food is amazing. Lamb chops are my favorite and I start with stuffed grape leaves. The martini menu is so versatile. There's a martini for everyone's taste.

Place was amazing! Very friendly and the food was outstanding. I tried one of their specials which I was nervous about because it was something I had never had before but I can't say enough good things about it. This place must be a favorite in Fairbanks!!
Brian Bailey
We waited for over an hour and half for our food than they decided to tell us what we ordered they were out of. Very poor service and long waits. I do not recommend this place to anyone.

Would highly recommend to visitors and locals. Clean, fresh food, friendly staff and fantastic owner. Bobby takes pride and ownership in his restaurant. Thankful for this experience during my Alaskan vacation.

Seriously, I’ve lived in Fairbanks all my life (24 years) and this was my first time here. This places belongs on the map with Moose’s Tooth and Pagoda! Authentic Greek food, excellent service and fantastic atmosphere! Best date night we’ve had in the last year! Definitely recommend!

Excellent food—busy, so service was often tardy. Beautiful atmosphere. Creme brûlée was bland and cold, so the carrot cake was best.

Reading other posts saying it is a great family place, don't believe it. Went there for a going away dinner for my sister. I had to bring my kids with as I did not have a sitter and my husband is not in the state at the moment. My not even 4 month old got a belly ache and started to cry. An older couple complained and I was asked to leave. Did not even get to order. I do not see how they can be a family place and not understand how a baby at times will cry. It was not like I was just letting her. I was standing up and trying to sooth her. I will never go back and I encourage all parents to not even bother. Apparently the only people the staff wants to help does not involve kids.

Our favorite go-to-date night spot, and this time they really out did themselves! I ordered the Honey Cream Hallibut special, and that was the best thing I think I have ever ate!!! SO YUMMY! Please add that to the menu!!
Jim Fraijo
The service is the best in Fairbanks. Enjoyed eating the pork chop plate!
Amanda Childers
Really friendly staff owner was also super friendly and food tasted wonderful. As it is a little pricy but worth it will most likely become at least a monthly habit.

Love the food, great service, beautiful place! Made my birthday dinner awesome!!

Food was average at best. Service was good. Wouldn't recommend it.

Yesterday evening was out first time, and it was amazing. The food, the atmosphere and our waiter Ian was outstanding. Will be coming back again!

We love the atmosphere. The people are nice & the food is delicious!!! Prime rib is so much better than all the restaurants!

The name "Bobby's Downtown" sounds more like a bar than a fine Greek Restaurant. However, this place has truly authentic and very tasty Greek food. Glad we happened upon it as we ended our cruise vacation in Fairbanks!

My wife has been going to his restaurant since she was a child. She had always spoke very highly of it and was confident I would enjoy it. I absolutely loved it! I have traveled all over this country and the world. This is one of my favorite spots. The atmosphere is very friendly. The owner himself is a kind man who often will go table to table speaking with his customers. He has a great relationship with the community. I would highly suggest getting Bobby's coffee. The gyro there was the best I've ever had and the tsaziki sauce was perfect! If you want something fast and cheap go to McDonalds.

I have been going to Bobby's since they opened next door to the Big I. The feel of the restaurant and menu has been upgraded on multiple occasions. The wait staff and bartenders are always very attentive and professional. I have had the pleasure of dining with friends, family members, and larger group settings all to which have been pleasurable. My grandparents are much older, and pickier eaters. This is one restaurant they will visit on a weekly basis as their food and experience is always consistent.

Don't Go to Bobby's For Lunch!. I work in the Key Bank Building next door to Bobby's so once in a while my co-workers will pick a place close by and go for lunch. After going several times, and having to wait incredibly long (even then our food was cold) I have decided no more. I think on 2 occasions I had to bring my lunch back to the office with me, untouched, because it took my whole lunch hour just to get my food. Also, I ordered "to go" not too long ago as I was having an in-office lunch, and when I arrived to pick up my food I learned they had never actually ordered the food. So, alas, I am done with Bobby's for good.

First time eating there on a Saturday night. Spoke to a very pleasant person over the phone when I made our reservation. It looked very clean and spread out. Yes it took a while for someone to take our order, bring our apps and at the 1.5 hrs to actually get our food. There wasn't anything particularly special about it ( baked lasagna and gyro). It was a bit over priced. We did not like that one person took our order but a different one brought our food and played the "who got what" game. It wasn't a terrible experience and would give it another try on a less busy night.

The First Bite was Shocking and so was the Last. It has been a few years since I've been to Bobby's and as a lifelong resident of Fairbanks, I hold no restaurant to a high standard. Bobby's is an excellent example of this phenomenon. Circumstances brought me there again tonight and I must say that positive highlights included the salad and service. Everything else was on par for what I'd consider the mainstay of fine dining in Fairbanks: High Price and mediocre food. There were some noteworthy elements to our meal: A well-done fillet, which was ordered rare and a pasta w/ marina that was reminiscent of spaghetti O's. These examples are however not strictly Greek cuisine and if the Roman Chariot tapestry tells you otherwise, be aware: Bobby's is Greek restaurant. On that account, I can't speak to what they offer and probably never will.

Love it.... I don't know if patrick is a troll or just misled, but I've never seen anyone smoking in Bobby's. I admit I have also never asked if they allowed smoking, but since 2007 and through multiple parties and dinners, I have never once seen someone light a cigarette, pipe or cigar.

That being said, Bobby's has the best Tzatziki I've ever had, soft calamari, wonderful pizzas, and the absolute best desserts in the city. They have a wide selection, from many different Mediterranean cuisines. I suggest it wholeheartedly to anyone looking for good food downtown.
Chuck
In fairbanks 23 yrs. had good luck at bobbys. Nothing great but very good. Still smoked in bar last time we were there and you have to walk through bar to dinning.

Smoking in a restaurant?. I love Mediterranean food. I was excited to initially try Bobby's. When I entered the restaurant it was extremely smokey. I asked the hostess if they allow smoking in the restaurant, and she replied yes. I turned around and exited.

I don't know the quality level of their food, but I know the air quality was worse than North Pole in the dead of winter. No thank you.

Best dining experience in Fairbanks. I'm not sure where the others reviewers were eating or what they were smoking with the negative reviews, but this place is simply fabulous! The lamb chops were amazing, the service was superb, and the restrooms were not only private, but immaculate! I will most definitely be back and encourage others to try it. The owner Bobby is genuine, and gentleman, with nothing but the best for his customers and staff in mind! Thank you for making my trip a memorable one!

Was a Doubter, now Love Bobby's!. When our daughter and her husband who live in North Pole suggested going to Bobby's for dinner, I read reviews and was rather doubtful after seeing several poor reviews. So I said I'd go with them, but I was a doubter.

We arrived around 7:30 pm on Friday, 3/22 and the place was packed! We asked how long we'd have to wait for 3 adults and 2 kids. The host at the front opened a small back room and set up a table for us so that we could eat without waiting! That was so nice, especially because we'd forgotten to reserve a table and we had a 2 year old with us.

For those that are looking for a quick meal, I'd say simply go elsewhere. Everything at Bobby's is made to order and it's the type of cooking you see on Food Network. The sauces and everything is made there so it's not going to be fast when the dining room and the bar area is packed. BUT IT'S VERY WORTH THE WAIT.

Our daughter and her husband had the gyro platter which also comes with potatoes and carrots which they both raved about. I don't eat meat and so ordered the Chicken & Mushroom fettucine alfredo without chicken. It was wonderful, not so rich that you couldn't eat it and the waiter was very careful to double check that I'd not found any chicken. I thought he was great - so thoughtful. The 2 kids ordered the Halibut fish and chips from the Hot Appetizer menu which was so large that they had trouble finishing. The tartar sauce was delicious, not your ordinary sauce and made on site.

We started with the garlic bread which was delicious also. All in all, we had a great meal, in a restaurant so packed that we never thought we'd get a seat and while the food took a while, we expected that since it was so crowded. Our entire dinner from drinks and appetizers to getting the bill probably took 2.5 hours but it was absolutely worth it and if I lived in Fairbanks I'd absolutely be back again!

As for the comments on the prices that I read, yes it is on the pricy side, but you pay for that when people make everything in house and to order. It's not like you're walking into a franchise restaurant that has tons of frozen entrees just waiting for you to order them. I bet you could get an entree out in 20 minutes at a franchise place, but they don't patronize local businesses and they don't make to order food. That same frozen entree probably cost the restaurant $3 or $4 dollars and you've just paid $20 or $25 for it. I'd pay the higher price every time to ensure I was eating freshly prepared food that was made using local ingredients by talented chefs.

The ambiance was nice, the restrooms were very nice and the staff was pleasant. However, we were there from 730 to 1030. We ordered our food around 815 and we didn't get it for a good hour and a half. Two martini's, an amber ale, the cold plate hors d'oeuvres and the dolmathes cost us 97.00 dollars. They were gracious enough to ensure that we would not have to expend mental energy by figuring out the tip. They tipped themselves 14.00 dollars. Lesson learned could have done this myself at home. The food was good but not a 100 bucks good.

Halibut was so tough I thought it was chicken! EXPENSIVE!
Luvgoodfood
Nicest Womens Restroom Around :). Really, I could take my drink in there and relax! I also really enjoy there heated bar on a cold winter's day, with a jazz band in the background! I really only go here for drinks. The food is extremely overpriced for me!!!
RedRose81
The food was good, but way overpriced! Three of us ordered margaritas with sugar (very clear) and they came out with salt. They wouldn't take back the drinks and fix it so I would say that was bad service.

Great food. Worth the money.
Marie
Food is good but expect to overspend. A medium pizza with a couple of Greek salads can cost $70-80. Don't bring the whole family.
Kim
Everything I've tried here is delicious but it's soo hard not to order the lamb chops. I usually love rack but the chops are marinated in garlic & onion and are just so yummy.
MeNotYou
Overpriced with an attitude. Used to be good since it was a new place to go, but has since turned into a place of where the waitstaff decides whether they want to exert themselves on you or not.

My Reveiw. I went there for my girlfriends mothers birthday, and i thought they had good service and excellent food

Came for lunch and I Sat at the bar. Before i had finished my meal bartender had presented my check. Owner thinks he is gods gift to greek food(not even close). Guess you have to be grateful that you ca n get a gyro when you are at this lattitude.

Very fancy BUT!. Has the best food. I'm a bit white trash I'll admit it so going to a fancy restaurant makes me cringe a bit. Bobbys made even me feel welcome. Thats not what sold me though. Bobbys has the best greek food you will ever try! I had the Gyro with rice and carrots all of which I swear were seasoned by some sort of God of spice. So perfect so delicious I could have lived off the sides alone. The Gyro was cooked amazing the sauce AMEN! Will return again and again :)

I was thouroughly dissapointed when I went to Bobby's. It took half an hour to get drinks, 2 hours for the food, and the chicken looked and tastes as if it had been sitting there for a while. We even had a reservation, and the place wasn't even 3/4ths full. Definitely NOT on my list of places to return to.

Too much smoke from Bar. I came up from Anchorage to spend a few days with my folks, my Mother said this place had good food so she made reservations and we went there. First thing we noticed is we had to walk through a smoke filled bar to get to the dining area (first warning), second I noticed the kitchen staff had to do the same (second warning). Then sitting there in the dining area the smoke wafting up from the bar was bad enough to sting the eyes, and clog the nose. Seriously... how is one to enjoy "good food" with that much cigarette smoke coming up from the bar? Definitely on my "to avoid" list now.

I suspect that our experience was not typical, but our service was extremely slow. Our waitress didn't greet us until 8 minutes after we had been seated. She was equally slow in bringing our drinks. Appetizer (hummus) was extremely tasty but would have been enjoyed more had it been served more promptly (took about 20 minutes to arrive). Our food (a Greek salad and a Gyro--probably the two items with the quickest prep time on the menu) took 50 minutes. One of probably top 3 for most upscale atmospheres for a restaurant in Fairbanks. Of course jeans and t-shirt is fine (this is Fairbanks), but there were more than a few patrons in suit/gown-type dress. I will try it again--I think our waitress just happened to be a dud--we were thanked very cordially by 3 employees just on the way out! All in all, good food with a classy feel. Hopefully our waitress was just having a bad night.

Amazing Food, Service and Live Music. Up visiting family in Fairbanks! This place is definitely the heart of downtown...it was packed with a live jazz band. Some of the best jazz I've heard... the atmosphere and staff were warm and inviting. There are at least 20 beers on tap and the calamari appetizer was delicious and very affordable for its size. One complaint was it was a little loud but only because it was so busy. I wish we had one of these in Charleston!

Good Food, Terrible Service. I'm up visiting my brother from Kansas City and we elected to enjoy some Greek Cuisine for New Year's Eve (a rare treat for my wife and I).

When we walked into the restaurant, we were promptly and nicely greeted, by the host. The entire staff was decked out in togas, which was more fun than I thought it would be. We were seated quickly and our waitress took our drink orders in reasonable time.

While the drinks didn't take an inordinate amount of time to reach our table, it was by no means quick. The appetizers likewise. However, when the rest of my party got their entrees, it was an additional 30 minutes for my Rack of Lamb (supposedly a house special) to be brought to my table.

The presentation was pretty nice, the carrots and potatoes were very good and the rice was really good. However, when I cut into my "medium" rack of lamb, I discovered that it was barely rare. Needless to say I was a bit peeved. It took an hour and fifteen minutes to get a poorly cooked house special. I flagged down our waitress and sent the lamb back. About thirty minutes later, my lamb finally was returned to me. At this point the lamb was finally cooked, however the rest of the meal had suffered from sitting under the warming lamps for half an hour.

We walked out. 2 things made me walk out of this restaurant. first was sticker shock. I thought the prices were way to much for the portions I was seeing being served to other people.by the time you order an appetizer, 2 entrees, desert and possibly just sodas or tea, it would have been over 100$. oh and i forgot the tip, so more over 100$! second was the fact that we waited so long to have some one take our order, that we actually had time to decide we were leaving. we must have gone on a busy night. the place is popular and was packed, but I guess with people that have deeper pockets than me for one meal out.

So Not Worth HALF the Money. Okay, if you look at my reviews I am most certainly forgiving considering this is the interior of Alaska. Look at the tetanus ridden Little Saigon review. If the food is good, I will give a good review, because that's what eating in Fairbanks is all about; the quality of the food not the embiance.

I am sorry, but I ordered the rack of lamb and not only did it take over an hour, the lamb was over cooked and under seasoned. I sat at the bar, so obviously I figured there would be some delay in receiving the food. 20 minutes after I ordered, I received the salad. Let me rephrase that statement; the greens plate. I guess Sam's had a sale on both lamb and greens. I could have done much better had I stayed at home and eaten a TV dinner.

For nearly $60 for just myself, I received three watered down double Maker's Mark and gingers, an over cooked lamb, and a sprinkling of salad greens with a way vinaigrette that was almost wine. $60 without an appetizer; SKIP Bobby's and go to Lavelle's. As a matter of fact, walk past Gambardella's snobbish servers and go to Big Daddy's.
Natalie
Great!. I have been to this restruant a few times. The staff is really nice. The food is always amazing. LOVE the swordfish and the calimari! The vegtables are yummy too! I plan on come back here often!
Elizabeth
Mediocre at best. Upon arrival our party of 3 were greeted fairly promptly and seated at a table set for two.
I was not given utensils until I had already finished my appetizers with my fingers and then had to ask for a napkin and silverware. The Calamari and Bruschetta were very nice and were not to troublesome to eat with my fingers however, I shouldn't of had to.

For the prices they charge, to have to pay an additional $2.00 for a side salad was ridiculous The Gyros Dinner was the worst we have ever had and we've had many around the world. Previously frozen processed beef, thawed and wrapped in a previously frozen pita does not a excellent gyro make, as a matter of fact it was horrible. Especially since they claim to specialize in GREEK. The side carrots were to soft, the potatoes were worse; mushy and uneventful on the pallet and the rice was eh!

My swordfish was BLAND even with the additional $2.00 I had to pay for sauce.

Overall $94.00 for the 3 of us, that is 3 waters, 2 appetizers and 3 main dishes. Let me not forget to mention the $20.00 tip that we had left, not 22% for the excellent service but for the fact we couldn't get change for 10 minutes and were were running late.

I can not understand why people are so fascinated with this restaurant and its mediocre foods, maybe it is the ambiance and decor which by itself is not worth the price.
Eric Nomee
The atmosphere was very pleasing. However, the actual 'Greek' cuisine offered was lacking at most. The meal was incredibly over priced for an unspectacular plate of food. I would recommend this establishment to nobody I consider to be my friend.
Robert Woodin
Best we've had here! GreT job and thank you for the friendly service and atmosphere.
Scott Davidson
Great food and very friendly staff. The portions are generous (an appetizer can be a full meal). Had the spanikopita and mousaka and bothe were done perfectly. The rice bed was very good, too.

Nice romantic place, good jazz on the weekends and there menu is good. However they seem to run out of items frequently.

I expected more. Place is clean and presents well. Servers were friendly and courteous. Food was disappointing and delivery was painfully slow. Food in Fairbanks is expensive and I've come to expect that, but what we received was overpriced.
Jenny Cathey
Mediocre food, expensive prices. Not bad, but not good, either. :( Certainly not traditional Greek cuisine.
