Atmosphere was great! Food was cooked the way I requested. The staff was friendly. Would have liked to connect to the Wi-fi while I was there, but otherwise a place to definitely come back to.
A rough day in the Cafe!. My brother and I were in Dallas and time to grab some breakfast before our appointment. Tater's seemed like a good choice and we found our way in though it is tucked in away from the street. It's seat yourself so we took a small table just to the left of the door. It was apparent immediately that they were in somewhat of a crunch. We later learned our server had just returned from some extended time off and was getting back up to speed. She mentioned more than once that they were running way behind.
So my brother gets coffee and I an OJ. Considering the plight here it wasn't surprising his coffee wasn't kept filled. At one point he found some of the filter paper in it. (She got him a new cup but not without a quip.) It wasn't too long before we placed our orders sat back to observe the hustle. I did note the cook in back and he seemed to be keeping a smile on his face and his wits about him. Even when a lady came in for a phoned in order that had been overlooked he kept his cool and was trying to calm the server down. Kudos to the cook!
Somewhere along the way our food arrived and I must say I was ready for some grub. Now I was excited at the quantity of food received but I quickly discovered it was lack-luster. My scramble largely consisted of bland gravy excessive potatoes. I could detect meat and veggies but they greatly overwhelmed. It was edible but unremarkable. My brother enjoyed his dish but likewise was unimpressed in the overall quality.
I would qualify Tater's as a greasy spoon establishment offering a full line of comfort foods. You get a lot for your money but (at least what we had) lacks flavor. I'm not sure what else is in Dallas and it wasn't a bad so I might be inclined to give them a second try. Like I said before it was a rough day and we all have those from time to time.
Taters Rocks. I stopped in two weeks ago on a whim, as I was tired of eating everywhere else in Dallas. I was blown away, the best kept secret in Dallas for sure. I have been back twice since, and the food was excellent! I was served about twice the amount I could eat, for very reasonable prices. The Ribeye steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly, and the chicken fried steak was very good. Speaking with the owner, she informed me she only buys the best cuts, and hand trims them herself. I was very impressed. I HAVE to try the prime rib this Friday, FYI-It sells out early, as I tried to get some last Friday and it was gone already:( Also, she informed me of plans to expand the outdoor area in the back of the restaraunt to include outdoor concerts for the summer, so look for that, I will!
My only critique; Taters needs a face lift, and a new name to reflect the quality of the food and people that make it so good. The decor is very outdated and the statues outside threw me off a little. The new management is young and fun, and I think it would help the business if the environment reflected that. Taters has a LOT for potential for growth, as is reflected in that it has been very busy when I have been there. On the other hand, maybe it will keep a few people away, so there's more for me!!!
Love It! Going Back. Great Food, Had a wonderful breakfast, with friendly service! I had Homemade Bread for my toast, it was VERY GOOD.. Busy, I guess most people in town know where to go for breakfast!!! A little wait to get a seat, but well worth it! Great prices... I will be going back :)
Wow Josh must have had a bad day. This place is great. I eat here most everyday. I had the chicken fried steak and must say that it was excellent. The pretty waitress kept my coffee full and offered a nice smile to boot. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for good home cooked style food at great prices. My only advice is to come during the slow periods of the day since this place fills up fast for breakfast and lunch.
Absolutely my favorite breakfast spot. Great food, friendly staff, great atmosphere.
Worth the trip. My bride of 43 years likes to bird watch at Basket Slew. My selfless willingness to drive her all the way out there gives me the perfect excuse to visit Taters. (HeHe ;-)) Breakfast or lunch. Either one will just about set you free!
2/25/11 Note: There is something very fishy about the low percentage of "I like it" votes here. We've eaten here a number of times in the past year and there's just not much to fault. Some months ago there was a spate of very vindictive reviews on this place. The Urban Spoon folks recognized them as negative "Shill" posts and deleted them. I have to wonder if a little more oblique effort to torpedo this place is not underway. I hate to see a good place get sabotaged. Just a thought.
Quaint and Cozy. First visit. Went on a Saturday morning. Usual wait for a table. The dining area looks like it used to be a living room of a residence. Couldn't have been more than 12 tables. Wait staff was friendly. Prices were relatively cheap. I ordered the special which was German sausage with eggs, hashbrowns, and a biscuit. My wife ordered the Belgian waffles with eggs and bacon.
I was grateful to find out that they don't use Egg Beaters. The eggs were done properly. The German sausage was tasty. However, the Belgian waffles were buffet size and they tasted like they used pancake mix for them. They were a little too bready. The biscuit was delicious. Great all around. Spent less than $20 including tip. We will return.
This is a good place with friendly service
