Review The Greenhouse Tavern - Cleveland

Vanessa Cad
Stumbled upon this place and decided to have brunch. Asked for suggestions based on what is good here and ordered chicken and waffles as well as steak and egg sammy. The sammy was good and had a bit of a kick to it. The chicken and waffles had a good kick to it too, the maple syrup alone was out of this world. A mixture of sweet and spicy at the same time. Chicken was amazing too, seasoned well. Service was good as well, always came back to check up on us and top up our drinks. They have the option of indoor seating and patio seating. Highly recommend.

Great place for drinks, dinner or whatever you make it. Gravy frites aka amped up poutine are amazing. You cannot pass on wings confit and the burger or lamb burger are delicious. Best rosemary garlic fries. They sure top Chef Symon's. Always have great beer, whiskey selection and tasty mixed concoctions that change with seasons. Carry Hoof-hearted beer.

We visited the Greenhouse Tavern as a large group of 10, coming straight from a convention downtown. I had the foresight to ring ahead and the restaurant manager was on the case to get us a table, even though they were full. We had only a couple minutes wait before we were beckoned inside and seated. The menu was enticing with twists and turns on traditional favorites, alongside exotic dishes like a Roasted Pig’s Head (!). Our waiter was commendably efficient in getting our drinks and food orders taken when there were so many of us. My Ohio Lamb Burger was a straightforward affair, very nicely cooked and rare to boot. My partner alongside tried the Chicken n’ Biscuits; coming from overseas, we’d heard a lot about this famous pairing. Alas the dish was pretty lackluster, the biscuits dry bullets which our American friends derided as a poor representation of what a biscuit should be. But overall our group did seem pleased with their meals and the efficiency meant I felt that I’d given my group a good recommendation for the evening.

I ordered the pigs head, it took an hour for the pigs head to be ready. The meat was very tender and the bbq sauce on it was pretty good. Unfortunately the plating and presentation left a lot to be desired, it's a great dish to be served the way I got it. The service was o.k. nothing special like I expected for the prices.

I've wanted to visit this restaurant for a couple of years, and my best friend finally took me last night for my birthday celebration. It was really worth the wait. First, it's located about halfway down 4th Street in Cleveland, which is a small alley lined on both sides with locally-owned restaurants and small businesses. It's completely closed to auto traffic, and in the summer time, all the restaurants' outdoor patios are open, and it is lit with strings of lights criss-crossing the alley. We had the crispy pig ears and a house salad to begin with, we had an order of the confit chicken wings, and then we indulged in the roasted pig head. We finished with the buttered popcorn pot de crème, which was a perfectly sensual end to our meal. It was all excellent, but it was way too much food. If I had to do it over again, I would forgo the chicken wings. Not that they weren't excellent, but I'm going to be dreaming about those crispy pig ears for a long time, and I would way rather have those again than the wings. The roasted pig head is an amazingly moist, and huge, piece of dark pork. I would suggest that you order one early, however, because they have only a limited number and when they're gone, they're gone. We will definitely revisit this place!

Delightful restaurant. I chose the chefs tasting menu and was very satisfied! Front and back of house staff are both fun and friendly. I would highly recommend booking the chefs table. 10/10

Very tasty, great atmosphere, not too pricey I got a Gold Dust Woman and a skirt steak. The broccoli had a great balance of crunch with its charred flavor. The potatoes were large and flavorful. The steak was very tender and juicy. The outdoor seating on East 4th is gorgeous and they have seats in the sun and the shade.

This place is seriously delicious. I’ve yet to find anything they cook that I do not like. The first time I visited was probably about 4 years ago when I saw the restaurant featured on an episode of Bizarre Foods Cleveland. I came in shortly after just to a get a small meal and they sealed the deal with their toasted Brussel sprouts and Tobasco fried chicken. The chicken is so tender and the perfect degree of spicy. The brussel sprouts are glazed in a balsamic dressing and fried to perfection(they really aren’t burnt) They are to die for. The next year I moved on to what I had really desired the whole time, the BBQ Pigshead. My brother brought me for my birthday and was the only brave soul I had come across that would eat it with me. It was everything I had waited for and expected it to be plus SO MUCH MORE. Since then we’ve been in for an April 20th special which included a schnitzel sandwich, their OMG SO Delicious chicken wings(seriously buy them), the clams (you’re going to love yourself for buying these), boudinballs, lemon cake, stoner tacos and the stoner sandwich, which is always available I believe, and is made up of a waffle and handmade ice cream. I’m honestly probably this restaurants biggest fan. They know food! Treat yourself and get on down there! Our next trip will be for the full lamb leg coupled with all the gyro fixings of your dreams! Thank you to the Sawyers you’re amazing!

Stopped in for lunch, it was quite busy but I was able to grab a seat quickly. My waiter was Chris and he was awesome! He made great suggestions on what I should try. I had the rosemary fries and lamb burger which was delicious and tender. I thought the lamb might be overpowering in taste but it was perfect! Conveniently located down East 4th as well!

This place is fantastic! My wife and I were visiting Cleveland for only two days and we ate lunch and had drinks here twice. The veggie burger was the best I've ever had, and the rooftop bar was such a cool place to chill and have a few drinks. Would highly recommend it.

Good variety of food at a good price. The pigs head is a treat, but best split between at least 4. The clams had great sauce. The wings had a nice well rounded flavor. The beef tartare was pretty tasty. The charcuterie board had a nice variety of tastes. My favorite dish was the Tabasco fried chicken. I thought it had the best flavor overall of all of the dishes.

This place is fantastic. Wings are amazing. Fries are the best. The caramel pot de creme dessert is easily the best dessert I've ever eaten. And they serve Black Label! Whenever I'm downtown, I try to make my way to The Greenhouse Tavern. (They have a kid's menu, but you have to ask)

BRUNCH REVIEW A for Menu/Ambiance, A- for Execution I came to Greenhouse Tavern with a group of 17 as we were all in town for a friend's wedding. They were very nice to accommodate our large group and put us in our own section upstairs. Before I get into how the food was, I have to commend this restaurant for their attention to detail. Their brunch menu was one of the most unique I've ever seen and for each dish, I could tell how much intention they put behind each element of their dishes. They don't just have "cheese" on their burger, they have Raclette cheese. It wasn't just a tomato, it was a preserved tomato. Even the bathroom was unique...the mirror was hanging on a hook, held up by a belt. For the table, we shared the Pancakes (and got a blueberry lemonade upgrade), the Caramel Apple French Toast, and the No Name Fries (think poutine). All were delicious and I would 100% get them again. For myself, I ordered the Ohio Beef Burger which came with pickles and raclette cheese. I was disappointed at how dry it was and I had to ask for ketchup for it. The chips on the side also weren't my favorite, I just can't put my finger on why. Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely come back if I am ever in Cleveland but it wasn't the best brunch experience I've ever had. I understand they have a rooftop which I'm sure is awesome when it's warm outside.

Great place for vegan and vegetarian food with seating inside and outside. Highly recommend the rice and bean burger. It's a veggie burger with beans, carrots, beat juice, and rice. I found myself checking it just to make sure it wasn't a beef burger. Also, recommend the frites with garlic and rosemary.

High quality with zero pretense. Compliments to the chef and many thanks to our knowledgeable and friendly waiter. The Beet Salad was well balanced. The Devils on Horseback have a very, very subtle heat finish because of the light Fresno Pepper and dripped with chocolate from the inside out. The dry aged steak had plenty of the flavor that you would expect by being aged for 60 days. Salt and peppered with a crust seared to perfection. Rib eye; my favorite cut. The accompanying flambe moutarde was even in it's creamy goodness and went very well with the rib eye. Add pomme frites dipped in garlic aioli. Very, very good and so pleased with the dining experience.

As a vegetarian you will love the vegetarian burger. I can’t complain. The beer list has good craft beer for any snob out there. Also great decor and as a bicycle enthusiast they have some old bikes on display. Old VHS tapes around, do you want to watch BeastMaster while you eat? Your wish can come true! Would visit again!

Excellent selection of beers, great service. I sat at the bar and had drinks and food. Food is amazing in quality, flavor, presentation. The bartender, which was a short brunette with a great personality, knew the drink/food menu in great detail. She recommended starters, seconds, and thirds with exquisite detail. I will definitely return.

This review is based on my Happy Hour experience at The Greenhouse Tavern.<br/><br/>I really enjoy sitting at the bar drinking some HH special and munching on Crispy Chicken Confit Wings ($9). Service was fast and friendly.<br/><br/>I am though a little confused about why the wings is called "crispy" wings? Their saltiness though was a perfect match for beers.<br/><br/>Love the deco and the vibe of the restaurant itself and will consider coming here for dinner next time when I am in town!

We went here for a family birthday on a Sunday night.  We were not able to get reservations, but they seated us about 30 minutes in which gave us time to get some tasty drinks at the bar.  The bartender did a good job.  Our server was slow and di not seem altogether "with it."  We ordered the crispy chicken wing appetizer.  The flavors were delicious but they were a tad overcooked.  Some more than others.  And my god were the wings tiny...  We also tried the animal frites, which were basically poutine with bacon.  They were good but will make you feel like you are having a heart attack.  If you get them, choose the half order and not a full order.  the half order was way too much for even 3 people.  For our meals we had a lamb burger, pork chops wrapped in saltimbocca and a pork ragu pasta dish.  all of the meals were good but the only one worth ordering again were the chops.  The burger was sooo salty.  The prices were too high for the food that we received.  I guess it was more for the name and experience.  Don't get me wrong, it was good.  But I don't think I would go back.

Only went for the bar. Way overpriced, you could barely hear the music over by the balcony, and for a Saturday at 10pm it was awfully dead inside. I wouldn't recommend it to stay but to see the decor and rooftop is a nice quick stop.

Chef / owner Jonathan Sawyer, a passionate Clevelander, moved back to his beloved hometown from NYC in 2007. In 2009 he opened The Greenhouse Tavern in what is now the hip and bustling East 4th Street dining district. .

The food and the service, are just downright incredible. We've eaten here a few times, and each time, it's been fabulous. For the love of all that's holy, please treat yourself to the Salted Carmel Popcorn pot de creme!! It is just divine! I'm always disappointed with desserts...they always look so good, but most just let me down. Well, try this little pot of gold. It's honestly the best dessert I've ever had. In my whole life. Ever. <br/>We also enjoyed the Pig's head, properly cut Delmonico Steak, and the pork chop saltimboca.

I was listening to NPR on my way to Cleveland, heard about the chef and this restaurant. I was determined to have lunch there. I was thrilled that I did! The beef tartare was amongst the best I've ever had. It was served with pomme frites on the side, garnished with rosemary and garlic....heavenly. <br/>I can't wait to return very soon and would highly recommend this restaurant to my Cleveland friends and family.

Had some of the most delicious food I have ever tasted! Our entire party was impressed with their food; everything that came out was amazing. Our server Alice was wonderful also. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to a friend

Horrible, horrible, pathetic service. Took an hour to get food & it wasn't that busy. Never again.

Horrible Service. Atrocious service after ordering expansive drinks we were not allowed to sit on the patio. Very rude service and they continuously gave everyone an attitude. Extrely disappointed.

Mehhhhh.... Some of the food is fantastic while other dishes are a total flop with a huge price tag!

This is my Meh face. I want to write a whole long review about how disappointed I am in this place. I just don't care enough other than to say it was a disappointment. Food was ok but not worth price or attitude. Typical hipster, I guess it my fault for not enjoying it.

Disappointing. This past holiday season I took my family to Greenhouse Tavern to celebrate their first night in Cleveland and my sister's birthday. None of us had dined there previously, but our expectations were high due to positive experiences at Noodlecat and the amount of media hype this place gets--and the Tavern failed to deliver. <br/><br/>First of all, the positives... Atmosphere is very good: the restaurant pulls off a pleasing and surprisingly welcoming combination of hipster style and classic upscale dining while staying true to the "tavern" part of the name. Additionally, the loft seating areas offer a great view and a feeling of intimacy. Service was decent: our waiter was attentive, pleasant, and knowledgeable, however his runner brought another table's food to us several times throughout the night. Also, the tray of different breads and spreads that we ordered to start was quite good, all of the items were all unique and flavorful.<br/><br/>Now the negatives. The menu is divided into ambiguous ideas of portion size, from "Firsts" to "Thirds" with an additional section labeled "Halfs." While we thought our waiter did a fair job of explaining the differences between the four sizes, confusion led to my brother-in-law ordering three bites of unremarkable fettuccine (a "Second") as his main course, and four of us sharing a massive bowl of Gravy Frites (a "Half") as an appetizer. As to the Gravy Frites: It was a bowl of french fries that were remarkable only in how soggy they were, topped with equally unremarkable cheese curds, and completely doused in what tasted like Heinz canned gravy. For some it may bring back fond memories of a drunken night in Montreal, but at this place, and for this price, it was a major disappointment. Also of note was the Duck Zampone, which seems to be Italian for an enormous porcelain serving tray covered in spam and duck fat. While unique, the dish was another disappointment, presenting what is typically a delightfully-flavorful and pleasingly-textured bird as an over-seasoned and textureless loaf of web-footed cotto salami. Other experiences were not as uniquely disappointing, but none were anything special either, simply reasonable but hardly expertly-prepared versions of entrees that can be found at many less-expensive places around town. <br/><br/>I can't say I won't go back to the Greenhouse, it wasn't an awful experience. I simply felt I received mediocre food at a high price and with high expectations. It will be a while before I give Chef Sawyer's flagship another shot.

Just OK. I have heard all about The Greenhouse Tavern from Michael Symon and a few weeks ago, Andrew Zimmern on an episode of Bizarre Foods. My husband and I decided it was time to make a trip up to Cleveland to sample the foods we had heard about. To start, we had the bread and butter board, it was good...$15 good? No, but it was good. I had the pot au feu to start, it was tiny, about 2 bites tiny, but it was interesting in taste. My husband had the wings, they were crispy and delicious. Next, I had the clams, these were very good, although you don't get many. However, the broth was AMAZING, I dipped a loooot of bread into it and so did our friends. The husband had the fries with gravy, bacon, eggs...they were fantastic! My main entree was the lamb burger, it was overdone and the cheese wasn't good, and trust me, I am no stranger to all types of cheese, this mix just didn't pair well with the lamb. The bun was good though. My husband had the beef short ribs, they were huge, the meat was delicious, these were exceptional. To finish up, I had the buttered popcorn custard, the top was good, the rest was extremely bland and had no flavor. We also got a pig head to split with our friends, and that was quite good. Overall would I go back based on the food? Yes. Would I want to pay the prices they charge for what I get? NO. Our meal was over $200. For $200 I want the service and food I have had at Lola's.
Psycho Diner
Some dishes are very good and excellent, others are the chefs attempt to be creative like the custard that is tasteless and looks like we'll you decide. Ugh -

Best Downtown Restaurant. My wife and I lived downtown for a while, and this is probably the best food in the area. It is located in a great area for dinner and drinks (east 4th st), and every item we have tried was superb.
Carlo
Despite much anticipation, hugely disappointed. Meatball, soggy. Little Neck Clams, boring. Pig's Head and Short Rib dishes, obscenely glutinous portions.
Dom
Will never go back. Overly eclectic menu - who in Northeast Ohio eats this stuff - ridiculous portions - 2 little ravolis is an appetizer? Yet an enormous platter of egg, cheese covered fries is a side? Crowded atmosphere, messy bathroom and extremely overpriced.
C_habat
Over priced and inconsiderate. Eally interesting place, bit of a work out to get to the bathrooms. We had the meat version- Some of meals were a complete miss, others such as the heart and the "his" dinner were absolutely delicious. The waiter was nice but overall the service was confusing and mismatched. <br/><br/>We spent over 3 hours trying to get through the meal with workers dropping food off in front of us with no explanation of what was being put in front of us. The waiter had said he'd leave a menu to follow along and then promptly took mine that i had set aside, leaving us with no "cheat sheet" the menu it self was just titles with no explanations of the actual meals. The courses came in no particular order and when I actually stopped a..."bus boy" maybe? that had just set something down in front of me i asked, what is this? response- "Uh, I don't know, I'll find out" never to return. We ended up with duplicate courses, half courses, missed a course (i'm thinking it was the torte one). The wine didn't match up with the meals i'm assuming since the wine never came with the meal, it was after we finished a plate or long before the next one arrived, then finally at 11:15pm when we hadn't seen our waiter in a good 30mins, the restaurant pretty much empty, other workers moving to fast to stop and ask when do we get the bill?<br/>My boyfriend had said he had to use his credit card to make the reservation, maybe its like a few other dinners we had gone to where we pre-paid for our meals and were charged the next day after attending "special" dinners. So we left, got a call 10 mins later to come back and pay, which we promptly did. When I explained what happened there was a blank stare, a shrug and a mummbled sorry. <br/><br/>For $250 for two people, gratuity included, no explanation of the meals, cold air blowing up my dress the entire time from a floor vent, it wasn't worth it and left a bitter taste in my mouth. <br/><br/>I was considering some time in the far future to give this place another chance but when I posted my review on their fb page, they promptly deleted it without even so much as a sorry message. Yeah, nothing awesome to say? Well we don't want to let others see that.

Service excellent. Both husband and I did the 4 coarse tasting; so glad we did. Food was superb. So happy to have real gastro pub food available in Cleveland!

Magnificent. My wife and I both had the Chef's Tasting Menu and it was well worth it. I would defenitely dine here the next time I come to Cleveland.
Alma Gray
Felt as though we were bothering the staff with our presence. Very undesirable table location. Overpriced. All the food tasted the same--I imagine that is what a salt lick tastes like. Disappointed.
Neil Allen
OVER RATED. Six of us went to dinner at greenhouse---owing to its hype. The halibut was tasteless and cold.<br/>Due to it being a family meal I opted to complain the next day. I was told by a manager that he would make recommendations to the chef about temperature and flavoring---any would be nice. It tasted like salmon out of a can. The manager said he would call me back. I left several messages and none was returned.<br/>You can avoid noodlecat too. Unless you prefer tasteless meals.
Ashley Armstrong
Came for a conference from MD and this was the BEST part of Cleveland. The service was good and the food was ridiculous! Wings were fall right off the bone and the sauce was original. And if you like chicken parm or lasagna try the Air Cheese, a vegetarian dish but absolutely out of this world!!!

Outstanding Lunch Value. My wife and I recently had a Friday afternoon lunch at the Greenhouse Tavern and were surprised by the quality and price of the lunch. We ordered the Gravy Frites appetizer and two sandwiches and the total with tip was under $30. While it wasn't the least expensive lunch ever, the quality of the food was excellent and we were still talking about it days later!

Great cuisine and friendly service. I dined at the Greenhouse Tavern with my family (husband and 2-year old daughter) at the recommendation of a colleague. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but we sure are glad we gave it a try! As we entered, we were amused by the many vintage bicycles suspended from the ceiling as well as the local bicycle-themed artwork. The staff were super-friendly, and very accommodating to our daughter. Some places are "too trendy" and turn their noses up if you have children (especially a toddler) - but the Greenhouse staff were great. One of the waiters even asked if we wanted some crayons and paper, which he said he always keeps on-hand. This is the sign of great service!<br/><br/>Now on to the food! The menu is arranged as firsts, seconds, thirds and halfs (apps, sides, mains and extras). There were many unique items on the menu such as beef shins and pork head. There was also a definite "local" and "foraged" theme. Prices were a little expensive, but the quality was excellent. We ordered the clams ($8) as an appetizer, which were delicious and paired with wonderful crusty bread. For our mains, my husband ordered the steak and frites ($27) which he enjoyed. I ordered the gnocchi with cod brandade ($26) which was good albeit on the small side. My daughter had the buttered pasta and veggies kids' meal ($8), which she also enjoyed.<br/><br/>The drinks were also good. I had the "You Had me at Hello" ($12) cocktail and my husband had the Victory beer. <br/><br/>Overall, the Greenhouse Tavern offers great atmosphere, friendly staff and unique and delicious cuisine. Would definitely recommend!

So-So. The waiter was very nice, though ...<br/>the gnocchi was very skimpy in portion size, with about five or six pieces in the large bowl. It came with olives nicoise, and there were only about three very, very small olives and one olive pit! (Was the waiter trying to help me diet?) It was very greasy and heavy, too. Don't order the gnocchi.<br/>The aged steak someone else ordered was almost too fatty to eat, and the guy had a very hard time picking through with his fork to find edible pieces. And he is not picky usually about fatty steaks, but this was almost not edible. The fries that came with it were fried in duck fat and had an unusual taste and most of the fries went back on the plate, and we never, ever leave fries on a plate. They were not very good. They were heavy and funny. <br/>The arugula salad was not, in fact, arugula but some other lighter garden green. Not arugula. The dressing was amazing, though. In fairness, I didn't complain due to the company at the table, but the waiter didn't say anything either. I saw another person receive an arugula salad while I was there, and what she got was, in fact, arugula.<br/>How do they justify that? Shame.<br/>I was impressed that it was locally grown and organic faire, but it was very, very expensive, and I wouldn't go back in any event.

My wife and I had a late lunch here last week after coming across the restaurant while strolling around the area. We are very glad we stopped. The French bread pizza with yogurt and crispy duck was delicious as was the chickpea torpedo. We would definitely go back again when we visit Cleveland next.

Atmosphere was crowded, menu was overwhelming, and we had to go to Chinato after for food. My $21 gnocchi came with 8 pieces of potatoe that left me begging for flavor and 2 baby tomatoes....I thought I was being punked or that he thought I had ordered an appetizer. The lamb burger was fine, but the French fries...beware....after 3 our mouth will swell from salt overload. It's so bad we couldn't eat them (and I can put back fries...and salt). However, our server was the shining moment of the night. He was happy and friendly, I wouldn't visit this place again but it was an experience for sure.

Horribly Disappointed. First let me say that I am a true foodie and enjoy few things more than fine dining. This establishment has received good press and raves from the likes of Michael Symon, so needless to say, my wife and I anticipated an outstanding experience when we visited on February 19th, 2012. Regretfully I must say that the food was "very much" sub par and we were sorely disappointed.<br/> We began with the Bread and Butter Board which was the high point of the meal. Next we had the Crispy Potato & Sauerkraut Latke. The smoked fish was average though I didn't detect the slightest hint of smoke. There was no crème fraiche or sauerkraut on the plate and the single, very small, latke was overcooked on the outside, raw in the middle, and swimming in oil. <br/> My wife ordered the 40 Clove chicken. The brioche was hard to the point that after one bite she opted not to eat it. Taking into consideration the method in which the chicken was cooked, it was surprisingly dry and very tough and stringy. In my opinion wasting food is a horrible thing to do, but I must confess, the chicken did end up in the garbage. <br/> The Strip Steak that I ordered (rare) was a surprisingly thin cut and was cooked medium to medium rare at best. It also had more fat and gristle than I would have expected at a restaurant of this caliber. After just a few bites, I bit down on a small piece of bone and almost broke a tooth. I did expect to have raw garlic in the frites, but I assumed the garlic would be peeled (it wasn't) and the root base of the garlic in the frites was a complete and unpleasant surprise.<br/> Not wanting to embarrass my wife, I opted to not voice my dissatisfaction with the meal at the time. However, after biting down on the bone in my steak, I did tell our server and received a very uncomfortable "I'm sorry" and that was extent of it.<br/> I recently read a nice review of Mr. Sawyer's newest establishment (Noodlecat) and it truly sounds wonderful and I sincerely hope it is a tremendous success. Sadly, after our visit to Greenhouse, my wife and I will have to pass on visiting that one.

Not what I expected. The service was really good but I was not impressed with the food at all. We wanted to order an appetizer and heard that they had chicken and waffles...well my boyfriend and I love chicken and waffles so we decided to try the ones here because we have had them at other places and were impressed, but not here that is for sure. There was no price on that app. but i figured that it would not be super expensive. The plate comes out and there is HALF a waffle and a drumstick that was the perfect size for my 3 year old nephew. I thought that it was totally ridiculous that you could call that an appetizer but it was not that bad. We both ended up ordering a burger which was not bad, but I have had much better. The bill comes out and I was completely FLOORED that they charged us $13 for HALF A WAFFLE and piece of chicken. I was totally disappointed & will never return to this place.

Food and service spot on as always. Steak Frites and Pork & Pumpkin Pasta lovely, Brussels Sprouts slaw AMAZING!

The menu availability always changes with certain food and its frustrating. Service is good but depending on whose in the kitchen, the food quality can change. Don't be afraid to try the weird stuff on the menu. They are all amazing.

Where else can you get Pig Tounge? Cool restaurant with truly unique dishes.

Food was late and cold. Replacement was undercooked and overseasoned
FLURY'S CAFE
The first time I ate there it was one of the best meals ever:) Unfortunately I brought my boyfriend there last night and was disappointed. Silly mistakes were made. My egg on the tartar was ice cold along with the fries. The beet salad and hominy were both salty. I should do have sent is all back but it generally ruins the good time so suffered through it and paid full price. I feel that a restaurant that expects those prices should be closer to their mark and the customer shouldn't have to police them.
Andrew
Unimpressed. On two visits my impressions are that the service is lackadaisical, at times condescending, and totally unpolished. The food itself is pretty good, although the menu groupings are not easy to understand and even less, the item descriptions. We know you are a green restaurant and source your ingredients locally, but we don't need to know the origin of every ingredient.. The acronyms get tiring pretty fast too. One more thing...for the price of the dishes, put some food on the plate!

To anyone complaining about the portions, go stuff yourselves at a buffet or something. Portion control is great, and the Greenhouse Tavern does a great job. The food is impeccable. My favorite dish is definitely the tartare.
Joshua
Great atmosphere. Nice job Greenhouse Tavern! From the outside to the bar to the rooftop patio the Greenhouse Tavern sets the tone for a great night out. The staff was educated and very into what they specialized in. We had just eaten at another restaurant so I can't comment on the food. However, the menu looked excellent and the customers highly recommended it that night. The beers were unique and delicious. I would visit this spot again the next time I'm in Cleveland.
Natalie
Overpriced. This place was overpriced and while the food was decent, the portion sized were ridiculously small. Who wants to pay $30 for 4 miniature barely-stuffed raviolis. No bread is served with meal for filler either. We had to go home and eat a second dinner just because we didnt want to waste any more money!
Wanderful007
Incredibly Fresh. Love this spot for the insistence on freshness. When the ingredients shine are handled as well as they are here then there is very little needed to make the dishes exemplary. But-- many chefs do tend to go overboard and then overpower the food and your palate. I find Jonathan Sawyers preparation keeps the focus on the true flavors of each item and the flavors sing! Grab a table upstairs at the windows if you can and sit back and enjoy the show--from the street and on your table. By the way, lunch is an incredible value. Two of us split the trout special and salad after beginning with the padron pepper appetizer and were very satisfied. One negative: the presence in most seafood dishes of meat, with many people eschewing meat there would seem to be a good reason to have seafood dishes geared toward that demographic and not add pancetta, etc.

Outstanding!! One of the best birthday dinners ever!!! Thank you
KC
Really good food, okay service. We came here for happy hour to meet a friend who highly recommended the place. I found the atmosphere a bit cold and unwelcoming...both the decor and the staff! The gravy frites and a marinated padrino pepper appetizer at happy hour prices made everything all right, however! Truly delicious. I don't get to Cleveland often, but would come back for those frites...

Chef Table? My husband, me and 2 other couples were placed at an L shaped table downstairs. We were celebrating our anniversaries. We were placed (right) beside a table of high school kids going to prom. We could hear the kitchen staff yell and the kids laughing. We could not hear each other. The food was just ok, the gravy fries were awful. Food overpriced, over-rated. The chef-owner never came to our table to ask how things were, so much for the chef's table. He did stand beside us talking to others for about 5 min. I guess we were not important. We spent over $300.00 on food and wine. We will never go back. Lola's is next door. Dr. Martin

Cool hipster food at cool hipster prices-meal for two will run you $100 assuming your having a couple of drinks etc-tasty but sparse-is cool dining really this important? Hmmmmm

Very Dissappointed in the food. Went there with friends last night for dinner. The service was good, no complaints there. Our server was very helpful with the menu. The drinks list is very impressive, I wish I could say the same about the menu. Very limited menu and even more confusing presentation. With some help from the waitress, my our group finally settled on our meals. Our entire party was looking forward to a unique dining experience. Instead, what we got was embarrassingly small portions and dishes that combined ingredients that made no culinary sense. Nobody in our party was pleased with their dinners, and we were all hoping the venue we were attending later that evening had food, because we were all still hungry after we finished the 'child's portions' we were served. I ordered a burger, medium well. It should be hard to mess that up, especially for $15, but, unfortunately, it came out extremely rare. Amazingly, the waitress tried to correct my 'definition' of medium well...I guess EVERY OTHER restaurant has is incorrect and only the GHT has is right. Overall, very dissappointing, very overpriced and plan on walking two flights of stairs if you need to use the restroom. There are many other fine restautants in the area and I have dined at many of them and have been very pleased. I would recommend avoiding the GHT.

My wife and I Went there with another couple. With all the hype I was at least expecting a decent meal. What we ended up with was a very expensive, grease infused meal that was served to us by a disinterested young man. We will never go back. This place may use sustainable 'green' practices. If I were them I would worry about a different sustainability- providing a good product that will allow them to stay in business.

Pommes frites are tasty great beer selection wings fall off bone service was good as well

Less than desirable service. The atmosphere and setting were really comfortable and I was very relaxed as I sat down in the bar area of The Greenhouse Tavern. Unfortunately, our server seemed less than excited to see us; he barely managed a smile, let alone enthusiasm. Maybe he was tired, maybe he was annoyed that we came in to dine around 1030pm, or maybe he didn't approve of my Columbus accent. Either way, it was irritating, given the fact that his job was to be courteous. <br/><br/>Through obvious conversation with a friend, anyone overhearing would have realized that I was from out of town and wasn't familiar with the restaurant. When I inquired as to what the GHT beer was, the same server sneered and added, "Green. House. Tavern." The tone was really unprofessional, and unecessary. I shouldn't have to explain to a server that I am from out of town or unfamiliar with the beer selection in order to receive a respectful answer in return. I wasn't really all that impressed with the beer selection, but I enjoyed both types I ordered. <br/><br/>The Ohio Beef Burger is what I decided to order as my main, which was really good, although I ordered it medium well and it arrived as a solid medium. A friend and I shared the Pommes Frites, which immediately became the spotlight of our meal.<br/><br/>I really wanted to fall in love with this restaurant, as I have heard so many positive reviews about the chef, but the service my friend and I received was far less than desirable and really clouded my opinion. I would need to be thoroughly convinced before dining there again in the future.

Way Overrated. I thought our first visit may have just been an "off" night so I gave it another try. Second visit confirmed how overrated The Greenhouse Tavern is. The servers are less than curteous. While I appreciate that Chef Sawyer is trying to promote local and fresh his cuisine leaves much to be desired. The menu is unique and creative but the finished product needs to reflect his numerous accolades. May I suggest adding some actual flavor to your dishes and some personalities to your staff?!.

Food was good but sparse for price. Surf-n-Turf Potee' was bad value. Few meat pieces in au-jus. Very disappointed. Atmosphere minimal.

BEST restaurant in Cleveland. Local and organic ingredients. The grilled bread with goat butter is INCREDIBLE (and cheap). I've had fish with Parisian gnocchi that was amazing, and their goat cheese tart with greens was delicious. Awesome cocktails too. Favorite restaurant BY FAR.

Wow, fantastic. We were lucky enough to get a table in the front window area, which had nice light from the outside. Further inside near the bar looked a little dark, but perhaps there were other open rooms beyond. Service was muted, but competent. The food here is amazing, as also noted by the more expert Bon Appetit and Food & Wine mags. I see the menu has changed since we ate there, and it looks fabulous! Can't wait to go back and try the new dishes. Gotta admire their noble commitment to sustainable and slow food, and their conservation practices. Great work. Cleveland is really lucky to have them here.

Just eh.. The wings confit were absolutely amazing, but aside from that we were left feeling sort of... eh. We came here because our friend that we were with heard about the gravy frites on the food network. We thought they sounded delicious so we wanted to try it as well. Considering the prices on the menu, we were kind of expecting a superior dining experience, but we didn't feel that way. We've been to other restaurants that charge the same in the way of menu pricing, and got FAR better service. In fact, the runner took a bottle of water from another table and USED IT TO REFILL OUR DRINKS!!!!! WHAT?!?! I mean, if you're going to reuse the water bottles (they are used as a centerpiece, but double as a means of refilling your own glass) cool, but I don't want to see you taking it from another table that has dirty dishes all over it and refilling my glass with it! I'd expect that from a dive bar. not a supposedly upscale restaurant. The servers really need to get their act together.

Never Been Let Down. We don't eat here often, because of the cost of eating out, however we do get here two to three times a year for a Bitrthday, Valentine's Day or other special occasion. The creative menu and attentive staff always make it a memorable experience. One of our favorites.

Wow. Visited the tavern on a cold Sunday afternoon and was not disappointed fish chowder was sublime, devils on horseback were what was expected but the pork was out of this world. The fat just melded the meat into perfection. Fries were also special pretty similar to poutine.

Impressive!. This was the most impressive meal I have had since SAAM in LA. eariler this year. The Greenhouse gets it! Three of us asked for the four course meal (only $44!) with each of us receiving a different item with each course, so we could each try 12 different plates. We also said we will not order, we want the kitchen to decide what we get nad we do not care about up-charges, Just feed us your best. And they did!<br/><br/>Highlights were the chicken liver on mac&cheese, clams and foie gras burre blanc (it could use a bit more foie gras), 1/2 chicken baked inside of bread, and the coup d'gras was the pig head. I love guanciale, so this is a real treat and a must have for a table of hungry people.<br/><br/>Some places make their food with love and passion, no question this is one of those places. Everything was executed well. The plates made sense. The food tasted great, and our server, Liz was fantastic. I really hope more people dine here. We were very impressed.

Wonderful!. When planning a trip to Cleveland this past June I stumbled upon The Greenhouse Tavern, and their Vegan options. I took my father on our trip and we both throughly enjoyed our meals. The service and atmosphere were tops. Can't remember what it exactly was that I had for dessert, but it was a chocolate mousse with caramel and sea salt, and I will talk about it until the day I die...Alone, worth the trip to Cleveland.

We ate here for the first time a few weeks ago before theater. The food was excellent and very reasonable. The decor was rather rustic, but it is a "tavern" afterall. I thought the menu could use some better descriptions. My roasted duck was actually a pasta dish with duck, albeit a very tasty one. The grilled fresh peas were rather stringy, so perhaps one is not supposed to eat the pod - again, not obvious to us. The wine list was interesting and reasonably priced for most selections. All in all, recommended.

So proud!. I was there opening week....and i felt so bad for them and myself, fire alarm was going off, terrible service and the menu had maybe 12 things on it....and they were out of a few..took 27 minutes to get a round of drinks at the table plus the waitress forgot to put in half the meal.....HOWEVER I went back a few weeks ago and it was AMAZING- food, service, everything...and Im a huge fan of everything green and local and organic. im so excited to go back!
Mars45sc
Good Food,. Went during happy hour and were greeted with a bill that was incorrect based on the happy hour drink menu. The bartender tried to justify the overcharged drinks as an "ice cube"charge. Also, we ordered a $5.00 dessert and the charge was $7.00. Pretty lame. The bartender did change the drink $$. Good food, embarrassing situation and laughable excuse for overcharges!!!
Michael
Gravy fries!!!. Go for the duck fat gravy fries.
Aprilrgeorgius
Dissappointed. I am a vegetarian that was shocked to find out the butter that they serve with the bread has pork in it...after I had already eaten it and asked what the 'unique' flavor of the butter was. Also, there was only one vegetarian main dish and one vegan main dish on the menu. For a new place with forward thinking philosophy I was very unhappy with the food and will not be returning.
Raconteur216
Let down - here's why. Lemme start by saying that I WOULD go back. <br/><br/>Just at there last night. Wine list does not reflect what they have in the cellar... "HUH?" This was explained after a different bottle was brought to the table and opened than was ordered. Why not mention this first? Waiter did comp the bottle and bring a new one! Kudos.<br/><br/>Waiter was either swamped and/or new.... For $18-30 entrees, service should be dead - on: know your menu , establish a bit of rapport with the table ( your tip for the 6 top was over $60 bucks).<br/><br/>My grass-fed steak was delicious and tended but was NOT rare as I ordered. It was medium rare...<br/><br/>I am not a super picky diner... but when a table spends $350 on dinner.. it should be dead on... <br/><br/>Yeah, I'll go back.. the menu is creative and I like the overall eco/green concept.

This is GOOOOOD food. Perfect... everything is always perfect. If you understand food and cooking, then you understand that this food is top notch. The wings are confited before they are fried... how amazing is that?! The frites are fried twice and then served with a wonderfully fresh garlic aioli. The tartare is hand ground and then served with an amazing fresh egg. The hominy... oh, the hominy. Must love olives for the puttanesca and the saltimbocca was the most amazing piece of pork I have ever tasted... I hope that it doesn't go unnoticed that they get the pig in whole and butcher it on site. This was not a cryovac piece of meat. The granita was the most amazing, refreshing end to the meal. Everything was perfect. I can't forget the cocktails either... Mr. Collins is a wonderful man.

Luscious Local Foods. This was hands down one of the best meals of my life --and I have been fortunate to have traveled extensively in the US and across Europe and Asia. The menu features fresh, local foods and sublime and subtle preparations which highlights the terroir of Farmer Jones' exquisite veggies. Vegetarians and vegans in particular prepare to be transported directly to heaven.<br/><br/>Ms. Mapps

I admit - I came in with high expectations. I've read the reviews, seen the photos, and heard stories.<br/><br/>Overall, the GT delivered. I walked away feeling that I received value for my dining dollars.<br/><br/>As appetizers, we tried the olives and the fromage blanc. While the olives were good, the fromage blanc was more interesting.<br/><br/>I also tried the roasted peppers on the seconds menu. They were a hit - garlicky and delicious.<br/><br/>The steak frites was good, but probably not a reason to have dinner at the GT. The Pan Fried Pork Chop Saltimbocca was excellent - almost every bite was perfect. It was juicy and well seasoned, but there were a few bites that were just salty.<br/><br/>The farmer's side salad was another winner. It was a great blend of flavors and textures.<br/><br/>For dessert, I was unimpressed with Jeni's ice cream. It was strawberry buttermilk, but it tasted like grainy strawberry ice cream to me - not $4 worth of a delectable treat. The St. Germain Summer Berry Trifle was far superior. This is the summer dessert you want to try.<br/><br/>The service ranged from non existent to excellent. It was odd how the quality of service ranged over the course of an evening. It was also challenging to have a vegan staff member give non-vegan recommendations. Thankfully, she called over a carnivorous colleague to give input.<br/><br/>The ambiance left something to be desired. There was a lot of conversation noise with music above that. It would have been more enjoyable to turn the music down and just let the conversations continue.<br/><br/>The price point of a meal at the GT puts this out of a weekly stop for me, but it's definitely a place to return to on a frequent basis - especially is the menu changes seasonally.

What is so great about this place. Made reservations on line to dine before the King / Taylor concert. Busy night. Got seated promptly enough. Placed order in not unreasonable time. Bread and pork spread - dry and rather tasteless. Soup delivered with waiter's thumb prominently on the rim of the bowl.<br/>Rabbit pappardelle nothing special. Noodles stuck together, sauce unevenly distributed and not infusing the noodles at all. My wife's steak frites were nothing special. Beef was tough. Frites were fries - sorry, they just were. Frites to me implies something a bit more special. They weren't.
Stephan Kremer
Great food ... service left something to be desired. Ate there for the first time last week. Asked for outside seating ... for five or six. Given a table for four. When extra guests showed up ... borrowed a chair from neighboring table, with permission of the guests sitting there. Staff (wearing a Brazil jersey - who had just lost to the Netherlands) became surly with us. Eventually, hostess moved us to a larger table after second request. <br/><br/>However, the food was tremendous. I had the beef burger which was unbelievable. Friends have eaten their frequently and loved it. <br/><br/>I will be back and hopefully surly staff member will be in a better mood.

Great. Hostess opened full menu late night.......and the halibut was awesome.....waiter super cool too.

Review: The Greenhouse Tavern. The Greenhouse Tavern<br/><br/> 2038 East 4th Street<br/><br/>Cleveland, OH 44115-1024<br/><br/>(216) 443-0511<br/><br/>Date of Visit: June 5, 2010<br/><br/>Dining Partner(s): L. Stull<br/><br/>What can I say? My trip to The Greenhouse Tavern far exceeded my already high expectations! <br/><br/>As one of Bon Appetit Magazine's Top Ten Best New Restaurants in America and the fact that Chef Jonathon Sawyer was named one of Food & Wine Magazines Best New Chefs 2010 the bar was set pretty high. <br/><br/>We were smart, knowing how busy East 4th Street can get on a Saturday night we made early reservations for 6:30 PM. We walked in and were greeted warmly by the hostess who seated us right away in the upstairs white table-clothed dining room. One problem we noticed immediately was we were seated right under a cold air blowing vent! Who does that? Who puts a table under an air vent? Needless to say, we asked a nearby server if we could be moved. Promptly we were taken back downstairs to the more casual seating area. It was a bit more laid-back and comfortable to be quite honest. I have always been a bigger fan of really good food in a more casual eating environment.<br/><br/>To start the evening we ordered a bottle of the House Red (Grenache Rouge/Vacluse, Les Ramieres 2007) which being an inexpensive house bottle, was quite nice!<br/><br/>For first course Lindsay ordered House Made Fromage Blanc w/ Fresh Thyme, Olive Oil, & Grilled Bread. I had Hominy w/ fried pig ear, cilantro, and what tasted like a jalapeno oil. The few bites I had of Lindsay's Fromage Blanc were out of this world! The flavor was rich and the mouth feel was so smooth and creamy. My Hominy was crisp, the ingredients in the dish were beyond fresh, and what tasted like a lemon jalapeno oil gave it a nice kick. It was a delicious start to the meal.<br/><br/>For second course Lindsay ordered Braised Lamb Shank Ravioli w/ Fromage Blanc, Soft Herb Salad, & Bread Crumbs. I had Fifth Quarter which consisted of BBQ Pork Belly and Crispy Fried Beef Tongue. I didn't get to taste much of the Braised Lamb Shank Ravioli as my lovely dining partner didn't want to share much of this dish. The small taste I did get was extraordinary! My Fifth Quarter blew my mind! The Pork belly literally melted in my mouth. I have had some good pork belly in my time, but never as good as this! The fried beef tongue was a nice accompaniment to this dish. <br/><br/>For "half" course Lindsay ordered the Grilled Local Asparagus w/ Sauce Bearnaise and Herbs. I had Animal Frites w/ Fried Bacon, Two Fried Eggs, Whole Grain Mustard, Mozzarella Cheese Curd, and Brown Gravy. This dish, when it came out, put a smile on my face bigger than I have had in a long time! French Fries topped with everything good in the world all at once! Bacon! Brown Gravy! Runny Egg! So bad for you, but oh so good!<br/><br/>It was third course that sealed the deal making The Greenhouse Tavern my favorite restaurant in Cleveland. Lindsay ordered Sea to Table Market Fish of the Day which was Halibut. I had Half Roasted Chicken in Brioche Bread with Black Truffle. When it was brought out and presented to me it looked like a delicious little wrapped gift from God! When I flipped it over and cut into it eyes from surrounding tables immediately darted to my plate as truffle scented steam billowed up and surrounded the immediate area of my table. Other diners were in awe of what was before me. It was all mine! After the first bite I was in heaven. It was as if I was on the greatest illicit drug known to man. It was literally that good!<br/><br/>It was what happened next that made my night. The gentleman at the next table over offered me money for a taste of my dish!!! While I did not take his money I carve up a piece of breast laden with truffle onto a bread plate while he poured a much nicer Pinot Nior into my empty wine glass. Call me odd but to me there is nothing nicer in this world than sharing good food and drink with perfect strangers who appreciate it! It bothers me so much that most people are so fearful of this sense of community!!! This gentleman gave me hope for society after all! <br/><br/>The meal was amazing so we knew that we could not pass up the offerings of pastry chef Keri Garcia. Both Lindsay and I opted for Carmel Milk Chocolate Pot de Creme w/ Valrahona Jivara Lactee Chocolate, Chocolate Mousseline, Caramel, White Chocolate Straw, and Fleur de Sel. While Keri touts herself as "an aspiring pastry chef after 7 years in the medical field" her deserts taste like she has been doing it professionally far longer than the 2 years she has been out of pastry school. <br/><br/>Needless to say, I would highly recommend The Greenhouse Tavern to anyone for just about any occasion!
Dave
I agree that it is expensive but the gravy fries are so good and to top it off they serve jeni's ice cream!

Poor Service. A group of us visited the Greenhouse Tavern on opening day for the Tribe. The place was not busy and our service was lousy. The waiter only came to our table to take our order and give us our bill. We sat with no silverware and empty waters for a solid ten minutes. It's hard to eat a steak with no silverware. We will not be returning to this place again.
Joe Biagi
NOT WORTH IT. The service is terrible. My friend and I sat at the bar and had a couple of drinks. When we decided to order food, we inquired about it about it a half hour later, as it wasn't very busy, and the bartender gave us attitude even though he completely forgot to place our order. RIDICULOUS.<br/>I finally got the pasta, which, while delicious, was such a tiny portion that I was still starving after eating it. I don't expect massive portions of food, but the average person ordering an entree expects more than 5 tiny bites of food when paying $20 for it regardless of what kind of establishment it is.<br/>This place is just not worth it, and some of the staff could stand to cease with the bad attitude.
TravelWise
This place was featured on Food TV's "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" show during their "Guilty Pleasures" episode. Chef Michael Symon recommended the Gravy Frites at this restaurant.
Sheltiemom
Slow service, small portions, good atmosphere, good food...but I won't go back...not enough bank for your buck.

Great Dinner!. I loved the look of this place and the fact that it really does practice sustainability. We went for a safe choice of steak frites and it was delicious, cooked perfectly and accompanied by bordelaise sauce. We wanted decaf coffee which they don't carry, I guess because of the chemicals used and that was okay. The guy next to us asked for diet cola and he was out of luck but apparently they have a natural cola - pretty cool. The pot de creme was also delicious - we would definitely go back.
David Clingingsmith
Valentine's Day Massacre. I went with my wife and two other couples to have the prix fixe dinner at Greenhouse. I've never been more disappointed in a restaurant or felt more ripped off.<br/><br/>Our courses were never in sync across the table, the food was either tepid or cold, and one of our party had a glass of red spilled all over him by a server with no adjustment to the bill offered. Our waitress was barely in evidence. The food might have been interesting if it had arrived at the correct temperature. <br/><br/>The six of us spent more than $500. There are too many good options in Cleveland to waste time and money at this place.
Mike
Jonathon Sawyer learned the ropes from none other than Charlie Palmer before Michael Symon swiped him to run his New York restaurant, Parea. Back in C-Land, Sawyer opened Greenhouse Tavern, Ohio's first to be "green" certified. The food is unfussy French, with dishes like hand-ground steak tartar, cod and truffles in parchment, basil-fed escargot, and that Quebecois classic poutine, made with duck-fat fried potatoes, chicken gravy and farmers cheese.<br/>http://www.insiderohio.com/features/clevediningscene.aspx

Good food. Everything else? Well.... Chose Greenhouse because of its purported local, sustainable food focus (according to its own Web site). And the food didn't disappoint - interesting choices and mostly well prepared. The only issue I had with the food was that my dinner partner's fish was raw in the center - when we returned it, they had re-cooked the same partially-eaten piece we had sent back. I've never had that happen before - even in cheap chain restaurants, I've only sent back food twice in my life and each time a new piece was brought - my half-eaten piece wasn't put back on the grill. Weird.<br/><br/>Also, for the restaurant to be so tied to local/organic/etc. it was strange to find no information on the wine menu about where the wines came from...and these wines were interesting choices, not your average "names" so why not give a bit of info about, say, the country they come from?? <br/><br/>Now, for the service and atmosphere. Granted we went on a Friday night, so we expect a bit of noise, but frankly I've never had to shout so loudly to my dinner partner. And someone sitting at a table next to ours had a chair that scraped so loudly on the floor that it was truly ear-splitting. I can't imagine that it went unnoticed by the waitstaff/management but, sure enough, it did. <br/><br/>Let's see - at least 3 times our plates were taken from the table when they still had food on them and we were clearly still eating. Once my silver ware was picked up - and I had to ask for more when the next course came. We weren't asked if we wanted coffee with our dessert and, considering we really did and never caught our waitress' attention (and we aren't shy), that was a pretty basic blunder. And why would I eat cake with a spoon? I did, that was my only choice.<br/><br/>There's plenty of other strange, unpleasant things about the experience (the bathroom hand-dryer is so loud I could hear it at our table...and magazines in the bathroom? Jeez, I don't care if they are just decoration, that's just wrong) but I truly am usually a very laid-back diner - I was a waitress myself and I almost never complain or send food back but I could go on and on. I think the restaurant has potential - all because of the food - but I really hope the little details that make up a great dining experience get ironed out.

Awesome in every way. To those who've reviewed GHT poorly, I would love to know what your favorite restaurants really are. Applebees? TGIF? This is a whole different kind of place and you need to be at least a tiny bit sophisticated to fully appreciate. First of all, the servers are all outstanding, and they really know their stuff. Most have followed Sawyer from Cento, and they work together well. The food is always special, clever without being pretentious, and the ingredients are carefully selected from local sources whenever possible. <br/><br/>Go there any night and ask yourself: if these negative reviewers know what they are talking about, why is the place packed and the diners so happy????
Evahesse
Great Chef and atmoshpere.. need to fix service issues. I love Chef Sawyer and visited Bar Cento several times when he was at the helm and he never disappointed, but my visits to the Greenhouse have ranged from underwhelming to disappointing. <br/><br/>The food is definitely wonderful when it's spot on. The chicken wings fall right off the bone, the radishes with butter are to die for and the oysters with a little shot of vodka were fantastic (RIP menu item).<br/><br/>My main issue is the service. On a night when the restaurant was full and busy I visited with a few friends to celebrate my upcoming nuptials. Having had the Greenhouse Tavern's melt in your mouth gnocchi previously, I was excited to see it on the menu as the vegetarian entree among the many exciting things on the menu. Three of us ordered the gnocchi only to find when the food arrived(!) that the kitchen ran out of the gnocchi and substituted with a very ho hum house pasta dish. We were really shocked that our server never informed us of the substitution. <br/><br/>We had quite a few issues with our server calculating the bill incorrectly, charging us for things that were included as part of the fixed price menu we chose, but the main disappointment was still that boring limp pasta!<br/><br/>The server apologized and sent out Chef Sawyer who didn't really do much of anything to remedy the situation beyond throwing his card down on the table, apologizing and stating that he'd go out of his way to take care of us the next time we returned and walking away. I don't really feel like the Greenhouse did much of anything to right the situation and don't expect that they'd rightfully make up for it upon my return. The Greenhouse is worth a try, BUT I I'll stick with the Flying Fig for any big celebrations I have in the future.
Kimberly
1 out of 5 stars. I was extremely disappointed with my dining experience at Greenhouse Tavern. The service was friendly however, it was very slow. I found myself asking for drink refills and was never asked if I enjoyed my dish (which was not to my liking). Drab décor, poor layout and limited/confusing menu. This restaurant definitely under delivered in almost every category. I would not recommend this restaurant given the other superior restaurants on E4th Street.
Marian Fairman
Went for lunch, thought service and food phenomenal. Menu a little small. Overall great!
Kim
Mediocre at best. My last dining experience included extremely slow service (clearly a management issue of understaffing), a very limited menu, average tasting dishes, and sterile decor. Needless to say, I will not return to the Greenhouse Tavern - rather I will continue to patronize the FLYING FIG in Tremont which in my opinion is the BEST restaurant in the Cleveland area.

This place was very cool. We were there for a rehearsal dinner and the food and service were excellent. Great place to try on 4th street
Jdb44911
Disappointing. Had dinner on a Friday night last month. We were a party of 10, sitting at the large table in the bar (and yes, we had a reservation). Service was mediocre - our server kept forgetting drinks and dishes and disappeared for long periods. One dinner never came and had to be re-ordered so one person in our party began her dinner after the rest of us had finished. And the food was hardly worth waiting for. Fries and wings were great, as many reviewers noted, but most of the other dishes were average at best. There are so many other places to spend your money in Cleveland. Stay away from this one.

Great food nice classy atmosphere- hope it sticks around

Adequate food at best, poor service. Try something else.

Delicious food, excellent service, and amazing appetizers. The olives in red wine were awesome and the market fish was spectacular. I give them 5 stars. I also greatly reccomend this restaraunt.

Wings and fries!!! The best of both I have ever had and the burger is azaming too! The steak was excellent and the chicken was okay. Great space!!!

Eco Friendly Excellence. My Greenhouse experience was over the top. I was luckily enough to eat there last night before the game. I am so glad we did. Our meal was spot on (the CARDOONS were to die for) with perfection and the atmosphere of the place was very comforting and welcoming. <br/><br/>My husband and I were fortunate enough to be given a tour by the chef who pointed out all of the 'eco' friendly aspects of the restaurants including the cool solar powered bathrooms, the recycled wallpaper, and the amazing bike lights that the team made. Very cool experience.<br/><br/>Looking forward to taking my parents there next weekend. Hopefully to enjoy the cool euro patio!
Joe
Always something wrong. Either the fries are served cold, the steak frites are inedible or the hostess is giving you some attitude. some good items on the menu such as wings and burger. but plenty of restaurants can do that. work on consistency.
Andy
Love love live this restaurant. The food is amazing. Chef Sawyer is an asset to our great city's food scene. Love the Europen style patio make conversations mud more intimate. We also love the happy hour specials and that they actually serve many organic & local foods (including vodka & wine). Very cool joint.
Mr. K.
Mmmmmm... cocktails. What more can I say. Terrific throwback cocktails and a great bar menu to match.

Can't Believe The Negativity!. I've gone to the Greenhouse at least once a week since it's inception and have never experienced anything but impeccable service (the staff has accommodated more than one unusual request for me, and with a smile) and tremendous food. The house has always been packed during my weekend visits, yet service seems to go off without a hitch.<br/>The only place I have ever seen the owner is working hard in the kitchen to provide some of Cleveland's best food. I doubt he would be upstairs tormenting the customers he loves so much.<br/>With the innovations that the Greenhouse is providing, I feel quite confident that they will be not only a Cleveland institution, but are on the brink of nationwide success as well. <br/>Go Greenhouse!!
Lee
Just Awful. My husband and I were out for the evening hoping for a nice dinner at The Greenhouse Tavern. Unfortunately, the evening started out poorly due to the hostess. She had an attitude and made us very uncomfortable. The food was average at best. With all the wonderful choices for downtown, this won't be a place for a return dinner. I would go to Lola.
