Overall Thoughts: The food was solid with hearty portions, but the flavors were blander / more mild than expected. Despite having a reservation for Friday brunch, we waited a pretty long time to get seated; the service was very friendly but slow overall. The interior has a nice vibe and feels very homey. Prices are not bad and pretty standard for brunch food (came out to ~$22 per person + tax/tip). I'd want to come back to try their weekend breakfast buffet!
Food I tried:
- Avena de Coco (Coconut Oatmeal): Sweet with a pretty strong cinnamon flavor; the coconut flavor was mostly at the bottom. I love oatmeal and thought it was pretty good.
- Jibarito Bowl with Steak: The steak was tender and flavorful, the rice and sauce were delicious, and the portion was generous. I wish it were more garlicky though, to really capture to jibarito flavor.
- Nellie's Breakfast Special: Probably my least favorite of everything we ordered... The eggs were pretty bland and slightly overcooked. I really liked the toasted bread though-- it had a soft pillowy interior and crunchy exterior. It barely contained any plantains, but I wish it had more for a sweeter flavor.
- Mofongo Relleno Con Caldito de Pollo: This was a dense and filling dish of stuffed mashed plantains. I liked the texture, but found the flavor a bit lacking-- the garlic flavor was much more mild than I would've hoped / liked.

You can always count on Nellie's for a delicious breakfast/brunch. Whether ordering a la carte or taking advantage of the weekend brunch buffet, the food is always fresh and delicious. My family has been coming here for years. It's our go to for taking out of town visitors.
I went to eat today with my sister and let me just say that the food was delicious. The atmosphere was very homey and not to mention we had the best server (Shirley). She continued to check in and make sure everything was good and made sure we were taken care of. Definitely will be going again.
Nice service and good food. I got there right one they opened so we got a table Right away but I think they need to either expand more or fix the tables set up cause they a had a long waiting I think because not enough tables. I tried the famous coconut oatmeal, taste very good but WAY too small for 3.50. In general it was good the food but nothing major from others puertorican restaurants around.
10/10
Nellie’s is one of my favorite spots in Chicago.
Service is amazing - Alex and Collana (might have butchered the name) were excellent and deserve raises (but all staff, for real).
Come to Nellie’s!!!!
Came for lunch with a friend, and I absolutely loved it! I got the Steak Jibarito (side of Arroz con Gandules) and asked the waitress for a Cola Champagne - which was a fun drink to try as well! Overall, I'm super happy with my experience here - I'll be coming back again!! 😁
1st time coming here. I tried the coqui sandwich came with potatoes on the side. Very delicious! The only reason why I gave it 4 stars was because it took about 35 minutes to get a sandwich and it was not busy. I will definitely come back and try something else and update this review.
My server Shirley was absolutely outstanding! Very friendly and quick. Accommodated to our needs ! very Patient with us! would definitely say one of the best servers i’ve ever received!
Very clean and cute interior. Staff was super friendly and attentive. We went with the buffet for breakfast and it did not disappoint. Everything was hot, fresh and so delicious. Food was authentic in flavors! We loved the food so much we took coconut Oatmeal, Maduros and rice home for the kids. We can’t wait to go again to try something else off the menu. Table next to us ordered of the menu and the food looked gorgeous.
Parking was easy to find as well!
Stopped in here to meet with a colleague who grew up in the area and enjoyed our breakfast. Tried the oatmeal as I heard it was good, and it is! Definitely not your instant oats. Curious to try more and I see they have a buffet on the weekends as well. Prices were also low.
