I agree with my Wife. The history in this place is beyond words. I have been to many museums that should have as much history of WWI and WWII. We came in around 4:30 and had the place to ourselves for 30 minutes. Colin the owner, gave us a tour and an oral history lesson as his father and grandfather fought in the World wars. His Pop was a forger in a German POW camp that the movie, “The Great Escape” was based on. I could have stayed all night to listen to his stories.
The food and wait staff were also fantastic. Though it is a neighborhood pub, they made us suburbanites feel incredibly welcome. The Scotch Eggs are a must and the Fish and Chips were outstanding. Colin even walked us to the door. We will definitely be back!
Went to the Red Lion Pub on Friday, March 23. Pre concert meal around 4:30. Pretty much had the pub to ourselves. We all had Scotch eggs to start, two of us had shepherds pie, one had fried perch, the other had bangers and mash. Our meal was completed with a warm custard and berry dessert. Excellent food! Beer was had, of course. While waiting we perused the collection of photos, books, and documents. The guardian, Colin, gave us a tour and told us about his family. We thanked him as we left and he walked outside. Fascinating place, great food, great staff, and owner.❤️
The sausage for the bangers and mash melts in your mouth. That first cut into the sausage I expected a little more resistance but they are soft but completely cooked through.
I don't think I've ever had sausage like this but it was very good.
The fish was glistening in the fish and chips and it is just exactly what you want to have a pint of beer with.
Next visit will have to explore more of the menu because these two dishes were excellent.
Very good English Pub that has a very genuine English vibe to it. The atmosphere is great. I personally traveled up to go to it. It is in a northern neighborhood, and you will need to make the trip to get to it. The pub has the traditional food you would expect: Fish and Chips, Bangers and Mash, etc. The Fish and Chips were excellent. Their beer selection is eclectic. I had an Austrian lighter beer that was great. Very cool place to go to if an English vibe is what you are looking for.
The best fish and chips around. Been going here since the 1980's with my parents. Now passing onto the next generation to my son. Ciders are great aswell
In all fairness and honesty, I gave the food five stars as it smelled delicious, but I was still on the liquid course of the day so I did not indulge in the food menu offerings; I intend to return soon and amend this err.
If, as Plato espouses, 'all things have divine forms which they may attempt to resemble but never obtain,' then this is about as close as any bar could get in this world to the heavenly ideal. I will endeavor here to not wax quite so philosophical about this, but try and bear with me.
The barman, Colin, is a true man of our profession. He is a man of many a witticism, parable, syllogism & enthymeme. The barman turns of phrase & acts of rhetorical locution fit as handily with him as the pint glasses & welcoming gesticulations fit his hands and manner.
Just, go here. It's great. If I am a good barman, perhaps one day I'll aspire to dream of being spoken of in the same company as this charming, knowledgeable, and affable gentleman. A true sport, and the bar he has raised is not to be missed. Cheers!
Top notch. Incredible staff and we were very excited to meet with the owner. Great to talk with. Amazing stories about the place, people and decor. Fish is SO flakey and tender. I'd eat here again and again. Fun place. English pub atmosphere.
I’m a bit of an Anglophile and been coming here for their British beer selection for every bit of 10-12 years. There are not many places that will serve Fullers brews but they always have this on tap. Pup grub above average but again, London Pride on draught is a real treat. Gregarious owner usually there too and has an eccentric display of decor throughout.
The owner walked us around for an hour talking about all the historical items that he has in the pub. Can't recommend it enough. Extremely comfortable place for food and drink with immense amounts of history on the walls. He even has a signed picture of Tibbets who dropped the Hiroshima bomb.
I love this place! My grandmother was Irish but lived in England from a little after birth until her late thirties/forties, so going here with my dad brought back some wonderful family memories. My cider and fish and chips were delicious. Can’t wait to go back.
Stopped in for a bite before a movie and were met with warm service and interior alike to escape the chilly precipitation outside. The beers were cold and delicious and the food, hot and clearly prepared fresh. The corned beef was perfectly salty and soft, the rye had a nice toast to it and the fries perfectly crunch and fried to order.
Looking for an authentic pub experience with great food, great drinks and vibe that oozes “God Save the Queen!”? Well, look no further. Bonus points if you can tap into Colin’s (The Proprietor) encyclopedic knowledge of history and philosophy. 3 cheers for the Red Lion!
